ESPNcricinfo staff15-Jul-2024Aaron Jones’ success for USA at the T20 World Cup 2024 has earned him a contract in the CPL. Jones, who qualifies as a local player through his Barbados passport, was signed by St Lucia Kings in Monday’s draft for the 2024 season, which runs from August 29 to October 4.Jones hit 94 not out against Canada on the opening night of the World Cup, and also made a vital 36 not out in USA’s tie against Pakistan, which they later won in the Super Over. He has previously played in West Indies’ regional set-up for Barbados and Combined Campuses and Colleges, and was an unused member of the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots squad in CPL 2019.The six CPL 2024 franchises had already done most of their recruiting through retentions and pre-signings, and Kyle Mayers was the first to be signed in Monday’s draft, joining Patriots. Mikyle Louis, who made his Test debut at Lord’s last week, will also play for Patriots, along with Ryan John and Veerasammy Permaul.Related

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Madrid are of the opinion that Endrick, who turns 19 this month, will remain on the periphery under Alonso, much like he was under previous manager Carlo Ancelotti. The Brazilian had to miss the first couple weeks of the Club World Cup in the United States as he was recovering from an injury. In his absence, academy starlet Gonzalo Garcia has started every single game and has been the find of the tournament, scoring joint-most four goals and an assist in five games. With Garcia, Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Franco Mastantuono, who is yet to join the club, Madrid believe that Endrick will remain at the lower end of Alonso's pecking order next season. In such circumstances, the 15-time European champions are planning to send the teenage striker on loan.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The report revealed that clubs from Germany and France, who had previously shown interest in taking Endrick on loan, have once again reignited their pursuit of the former Palmeiras sensation's signature.

    WHAT NEXT FOR ENDRICK?

According to reports from Spain, Endrick held a meeting with Madrid chief Jose Angel Sanchez in the USA to discuss his future. As per journalist Jorge Picon, after a few training sessions, Alonso has decided to use the Brazilian international as a right winger next season. It is expected that a decision on his future will be revealed in the coming weeks.

South Africa call up Under-19 World Cup star Maphaka for West Indies T20Is

The CPL could be the reason behind Heinrich Klaasen, Anrich Nortje, David Miller and Tabraiz Shamsi’s exclusion

Fast bowler Kwena Maphaka, who was the Player of the Tournament at this year’s Under-19 World Cup, is in line for a senior international debut after being included in South Africa’s squad to play West Indies in three T20Is later this month. The call-up tops a stellar year for Maphaka, who helped South Africa U-19 to the semi-final of the World Cup, where he took 21 wickets at an average of 9.71. He also made his provincial debut for Lions just before that, and was picked by Mumbai Indians for IPL 2024, all in the space of three months.”Kwena has been identified as a player with significant potential, and this tour presents a great opportunity to include him in the Proteas environment, and gain valuable international experience,” South Africa’s white-ball coach Rob Walter said.Related

In his short career so far, Maphaka has shown a remarkable level of maturity in balancing pace and control against some of the best young batters in the game. Quinton de Kock is perhaps the most notable absentee from the T20 World Cup squad – he has not confirmed his international retirement, although it has been widely speculated.De Kock had stepped away from Tests in 2021, from ODIs in 2023, and had indicated that the T20 World Cup in June this year would be his last international assignment. However, he has not made a definite announcement yet, and will be playing for Barbados Royals in the CPL, which starts on August 30, three days after the third and final T20I against West Indies. The CPL could also be the reason behind the exclusion of Heinrich Klaasen, Anrich Nortje, David Miller and Tabraiz Shamsi, although Tristan Stubbs, who has been signed by St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, has been included in the squad. Kagiso Rabada, Keshav Maharaj and Marco Jansen are being rested, while Nqaba Peter, the legspinner who made his T20I debut against West Indies in May, could not be considered as he continues rehabilitation after a shoulder injury.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Rassie van der Dussen has been recalled after missing out on the T20 World Cup, but there is no room for Matthew Breetzke. Aiden Markram, meanwhile, will continue to captain the side.”This tour allows us to continue developing our player pool whilst maintaining the core of experienced players,” Walter said. “It will also expose our emerging talent to quality international opposition, similar to the last time we played against West Indies in May.”The three matches will all be played at the Brian Lara Stadium from August 23-27. Not just Trent: £140k-per-week flop's Liverpool story now looks finished

Liverpool’s victory over Leicester City on Sunday put Arne Slot within touching distance of the Premier League title.

The trophy’s plaque will be engraved with Liverpool’s name for the second time in its modern format, and no mistake. To fall now would be inconceivable.

Leicester put up a good fight but failed to prevent their relegation to the Championship, and there was one man who stepped up to force the three points in the Reds’ favour.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future is up in the air, and the scriptwriters will be delighted with their decision to make it him who scored the winning goal at the weekend.

Alexander-Arnold's big moment

Just 15 minutes from time, Leicester had succeeded in frustrating Liverpool and keeping it goalless at the King Power Stadium.

But then Slot brought Alexander-Arnold on, making his first appearance since being forced off with an ankle injury against PSG in early March.

A scramble in the box led to the Scouser in Liverpool’s team collecting from the left and curling a powerful strike past the Foxes defences. Chaos ensued.

But, the celebration felt charged with something deeper, a pure outpouring of emotion that maybe welled from Alexander-Arnold’s knowledge that such moments will be few and far between in a Liverpool jersey.

Real Madrid are confident that they will claim the Liverpool man’s signature when his contract expires this summer. And Trent’s celebration in hanging his shirt on the corner post felt, in a way, like he was hanging it up.

There’s no doubt all of a Liverpool persuasion want their vice-captain to stay, but it looks like Madrid’s inimitable pedigree at the top of the European game is going to hold sway here.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, Trent’s not the only high-profile Liverpool star set to depart this summer. There’s another whose fate appears sealed – if it wasn’t before – following Sunday’s events.

Big-money Liverpool star now looks finished

After three seasons, Darwin Nunez still hasn’t reached even the outer rim of the area he should be in at Liverpool, and Fabrizio Romano has been banging the same drum in recent months that he will indeed be sold this summer.

It’s a rueful scenario. Nunez is a likeable and hard-working player, joining Liverpool from Benfica in a club-record £85m deal in 2022 to much fanfare.

But, now aged 25, his development has been minimal, and it’s time for a change, with the Reds overreliant on Mohamed Salah’s incredible output to get them over the line this summer.

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez

At the root of it, Nunez simply doesn’t play enough under Slot’s wing. He’s only started once in the Premier League since Boxing Day, with a seven-goal return across all competitions hardly aligning with the lofty figure paid for his services. Against Leicester, the £140k-per-week striker didn’t even make it off the bench.

But from his struggle, the fruits of something new could blossom.

Without Nunez’s sale, the signing of a big-money replacement at number nine is precluded. The £150m-rated Alexander Isak might be out of reach, but the market is rich with attacking potential and Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes know their way around an astute deal.

Liverpool, in other words, are in good hands, but must cash in on their record buy, cutting their losses as it were, if Slot is to really put his own stamp on his team and defend his title with confidence next season.

Is it a bit presumptuous to name Liverpool champions? Arsenal are still in the race, after all. But it would take the mother of all collapses for Anfield to fall now, consigning themselves to one of sports’ great mess-ups.

Liverpool will rejoice in having struck gold, one year after Jurgen Klopp decided to call it a day, but the struggles of Manchester City and Arsenal’s injury-rotten luck cannot be relied on next year, and neither can Nunez.

Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota converse on the bench

Across his first two Premier League campaigns, in Klopp’s system, the Uruguay international was all energy and impetus. He was a thorn in Liverpool’s opponents’ sides. But the clinical edge wasn’t there. It was decidedly lacking, in fact.

With Slot at the helm, he’s regressed further still, not so much profligate as profitless in even finding opportunities to strike on goal for the Premier League’s runaway leaders.

Though his defensive metrics are actually as good as they’ve ever been, this hardly compensates for Nunez’s lack of potency or indeed his declining output in ball-striking and creative pursuits.

Nunez has been an insoluble problem for two of the game’s finest contemporary managers, now, and there’s only one route out as he thrashes against the enclosing walls on Merseyside.

Liverpool'sDarwinNunezreacts

Nunez’s three-year stint at Liverpool hasn’t worked out. And yet, he won the Carabao Cup last season, registering 32 goal contributions in all competitions. He’s going to leave with a Premier League winner’s medal draped around his neck.

That two-goal cameo against Brentford in January, both goals struck in stoppage time.

A momentous result, one which allowed Slot’s side to capitalise on Arsenal’s shock defeat to West Ham United a day before and create significant space at the top of the table.

It was, in many ways, a watershed moment in the title battle, the first time rival resignation surfaced, Liverpool moving six points clear with a game in hand.

Perhaps, when we revisit this halycon era in the years to come, we will remember Nunez fondly, an erratic and mercurial talent who played his part through an important period.

But he has to be sold, having scarcely featured in the startling line-up under Slot’s wing this year. He has to be sold, paving the way for someone else to have a shot at centre-forward. Have a shot and score.

Cost £10m, sold for 750% more: Spurs hit gold on "once in a lifetime" star

Tottenham Hotspur do not have the best of reputations when it comes to buying players in the transfer window.

In fact, the fans have often decried the ownership for not backing their managers enough, which is entirely understandable considering Mauricio Pochettino was unable to sign a single player for 517 days.

However, for all the North Londoners’ historical lack of big spending in windows, they have always been strong sellers.

Daniel Levy has made a name for himself for being one of the toughest negotiators in the game, which has led to some pretty sizable sales in the past, including one player who was moved on for 750% more than he cost.

Ranking Spurs' best-ever sales

So before getting to the player in question, it’s worth looking at some of Spurs’ other impressive sales, starting with England international Kyle Walker.

Kyle Walker playing for Tottenham

The incredibly experienced full-back joined the North Londoners from Sheffield United for around £5m in 2009 and, after a few loan spells, became a mainstay in the first team during the 2011/12 season.

The 34-year-old went on to make 229 appearances for the Lilywhites, scoring four goals and providing 18 assists before Manchester City signed him for a fee of £50m, which was not only a tidy £45m profit for Tottenham but also a record for a defender at the time.

From defence to attacker now and the club’s record sale: Harry Kane.

The England captain famously came up through the club’s academy after being released by North London rivals Arsenal, and after several loan moves himself, he ended up making 435 first-team appearances, in which he scored a staggering 280 goals and provided 61 assists.

That means the Walthamstow-born monster averaged a goal involvement every 1.27 games during his time in the capital, which helped to justify the eye-watering £86.4m fee he cost Bayern Munich in 2023.

However, while Kane’s sale was a good bit of business from Levy and Co, a sale made a decade prior was even more impressive.

Gareth Bale: Spurs' best-ever sale

So, with Kane and Walker’s massive sales already covered, it should come as no surprise that the sale we reckon is Spurs’ best is that of Gareth Bale.

The Welsh superstar was signed for around £10m, including add-ons, in May 2007 and then sold for a then-world-record fee of £85m in the summer of 2013, meaning Tottenham sold the incredible winger for an astronomical 750% increase on their initial investment.

Moreover, while that would still be an impressive fee to receive for a player today, the fact Levy managed to get it over a decade ago is truly remarkable.

That said, the Cardiff-born monster proved to be value for money during his title-laden stay in the Spanish capital, and considering how well he was playing prior to the transfer, it was an entirely justifiable fee.

For example, even though the “once in a lifetime” star, as Wales manager Craig Bellamy described him, struggled with injuries and poor form early on in his Spurs career, a change in position from full-back to winger under Harry Redknapp set him on his way to becoming a world-class superstar.

During his first stint in North London, the incredible dynamo racked up a tally of 55 goals and 50 assists in 203 appearances, but it was in his final season before moving to Madrid that he truly reached a world-class standard.

Across 44 appearances in the 12/13 season, totalling 3891 minutes, the Welsh icon scored 26 goals and provided ten assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 1.22 games, or every 108.08 minutes.

Ultimately, Tottenham have made some impressive sales over the years, but considering the price they paid and the period in which they sold him, Bale’s sale remains the best in Spurs’ history.

Forget Saka: Arteta may have unearthed the new Henry in 10/10 Arsenal star

Arsenal’s sensational showing against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu last night secured their place in the semi-finals of the Champions League, setting up a clash with PSG.

Mikel Arteta’s men produced a perfect showing in Spain, restricting the hosts to minimal chances and shutting down any chances of another famous comeback.

Two second-half goals from Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli wrapped up a 5-1 aggregate triumph, dumping the current holders out of the competition.

Such a result has moved the Gunners within touching distance of a first Champions League final since 2006, with Arteta having the chance to write himself into the club’s history forever.

If they are to go all the way and lift the trophy, the side will have to replicate such a display in the following rounds, with numerous players catching the eye during the victory in Madrid.

Arsenal’s star performers against Real Madrid

After his huge rise to stardom in recent months, it’s easy to forget that left-back Myles Lewis-Skelly is just 18 years of age, with his showing last night way beyond his tender years.

He managed to win 80% of the ground duels he entered, making five clearances and two interceptions, playing a key role in preventing the hosts from getting back into the tie.

Madrid vs Arsenal

However, another academy graduate in the form of Saka also managed to produce an incredible display, with his latest goal taking him to four Champions League goals this campaign.

The 23-year-old registered a 100% shot accuracy, getting all three of his efforts on target, but also starring defensively, winning 100% of the tackles he entered against the Spanish giants.

The aforementioned pair certainly played a vital role in the quarter-final victory, but one other star has managed to repeat the feat of a fan favourite, given his showing in Madrid last night.

The player who has become Arteta’s new Henry

Back in the last campaign in which Arsenal reached the Champions League final, they also defeated Madrid en route, with forward Thierry Henry tearing the opposition apart.

His stupendous solo effort at the Bernabeu was the difference between the two sides over the two legs, with his moment of magic making the Gunners the first English side to win at the stadium.

Such a showing catapulted Arsène Wenger’s side to the latter stages of the competition, with his outing that night 19 years ago still living long in the memory of supporters.

However, the current generation has their own version of the Frenchman in the form of midfielder Declan Rice after his own showing against Carlo Ancelotti’s men last night.

The England international built on his two-goal haul in the first leg, securing the Man of the Match award for the second successive outing against the LaLiga outfit, highlighting how impressive he was in the triumph.

The 26-year-old completed 96% of the passes he attempted against the European giants, with three of which going into the final third, allowing the likes of Saka to kill off the tie.

However, despite his impressive showing with the ball, he was also just as effective without, winning 100% of the tackles he entered, offering a real commanding force at the base of Arteta’s midfield.

He also made four interceptions, three clearances and two blocks – leading to journalist Paul Hayward labelling him “superb” in what was one of his best performances for the club.

As a result of his display, Rice was handed a 10/10 match rating by The Express’ Fraser Watson, further indicating how sensational his showing was against the defending champions.

Whilst he operates in a completely different role to Henry, his outing at the Bernabeu was similar to that in stature of the forward, helping the side advance to the next stage of the Champions League.

If the Gunners are to finally get their hands on the trophy in the coming months, there’s no denying Rice will have a crucial part to play, with his big-money fee a bargain should he lead the side to European glory.

Man Utd and Amorim ready to sign £50m+ Brazil "machine" to partner Ugarte

Manchester United are now ready to sign a “machine” midfielder this summer, with Ruben Amorim eager to bolster his options in the middle of the park, but a move may only be possible on one condition, according to a report.

Man Utd searching for a midfielder

Given that Casemiro’s days as a Man United player could be numbered, Amorim may be tasked with bringing in a replacement this summer, and a number of potential replacements have been identified.

The likes of Adam Wharton, Hugo Larsson and Joao Gomes are on the shortlist ahead of what is Amorim’s first summer transfer window as United boss, and the manager could have a major rebuilding job on his hands.

A 0-0 draw against rivals Manchester City at the weekend is not the worst result on paper, but it leaves the Red Devils 13th in the Premier League table, having fallen way below expectations, with a Europa League triumph their last chance of having a successful season.

Winning the Europa League would, of course, grant qualification to the Champions League next season, which could be crucial for Man United’s summer transfer business.

That is according to a report from GiveMeSport, which states Man United are now ready to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson, should they manage to qualify for next season’s Champions League, with Amorim eager to bring in a midfield partner for Manuel Ugarte.

The Atalanta star has a price tag of around £52m, so he will not come cheap, and the Italian club are determined to keep hold of him, given the level of his performances this season.

A deal would be easier to facilitate if Amorim’s side secure qualification for Europe’s elite competition next season, given the financial benefits provided.

"Machine" Ederson impressing in the Serie A and Europe

Atalanta are in a very strong position to qualify for next season’s Champions League, and the Brazilian has been one of the first names on the team sheet, making 30 Serie A appearances, during which time he has provided three goals and two assists.

While the 25-year-old is capable of being a threat on the front foot, he is also solid defensively, winning 100% of his tackles and aerial duels against Arsenal earlier this season, in what Statman Dave branded a “top display”.

It is not the first time the maestro has impressed in Europe in recent memory, with football writer Carlo Garganese branding him a “machine” after his performance against Bayer Leverkusen in Atalanta’s Europa League final triumph last season.

As such, Ederson could be a fantastic signing for Man United this summer, at which point it is vital Amorim brings in a midfielder, despite a recent improvement in Casemiro’s performances, with the 33-year-old midfielder making 11 tackles against Man City.

'Satisfied' Shahbaz Nadeem retires from all cricket in India

The move is aimed at allowing himself to play T20 leagues around the world

Rajan Raj05-Mar-2024India and Jharkhand left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in India. The move is with an intent to participate in T20 leagues around the world, including the legends competitions.”I was considering this decision for a long time and now I have decided to retire from all three formats,” Nadeem told ESPNcricinfo. “I always feel that if you have some motivation [to play for India], then you always keep pushing yourself to perform well. However, now I know that I may not get a chance in the Indian team and so, it is better I give a chance to the young cricketers. I am also planning to play in T20 leagues around the world.”Related

Nadeem, 34, picked up 542 wickets in first-class cricket, including eight in two Test matches for India. He made his Test debut in Ranchi against South Africa in 2019 and had to wait close to two years for another one, which turned out to be his last. He played for Delhi Daredevils from 2011 to 2018 and Sunrisers Hyderabad from 2019-2021 in the IPL, picking up 48 wickets in the competition. Ahead of IPL 2022, he was picked up by Lucknow Super Giants but did not play a game.”I always keep emotions aside while taking decisions,” Nadeem said. “I have been playing with the Jharkhand team for 20 years. Even though we have not been able to win the Ranji Trophy, we have made a strong team that makes the knockouts of Ranji Trophy or other domestic tournaments every two-three years. As a result, no one takes the Jharkhand team lightly now. I feel it is time to pass this task on to the young players, and I am sure they will trophies in the future.”

Nadeem started playing for Jharkhand at 15 and it wasn’t until 30 that he got an India call-up. He was the leading wicket-taker in the Ranji Trophy in 2015-16 (51) and 2016-17 (55). But nothing can be more special that playing for India. As I look back at my career, I feel I should have achieved much more in my career but I am satisfied.”Nadeem specially thanked his childhood coach, Imtiaz Hussain, and said, “He is the person who taught me how to bowl. Even today I take advice from him about my bowling. I will also never forget how much S Rahman of Indigo Club helped me. Because of these people and my family, I have continued my journey on the cricket field for so many years.”Nadeem is the third Jharkhand player after Saurabh Tiwary and Varun Aaron (only red-ball cricket) to announce his retirement in this Ranji Trophy season, where he picked up 23 wickets, the most for Jharkhand.

West Ham now keen on summer move for "exceptional" £15m Premier League ace

West Ham United are now keen on a summer move for an “exceptional” Premier League player, who could be available for a fee of around £15m, according to a report.

West Ham chasing new defenders

Signing a striker may be the first port of call for Graham Potter this summer, with Lille’s Jonathan David recently being identified as the manager’s top target, but the manager is also interested in refreshing his defensive options.

Millwall’s Japhet Tanganga is one of the players on the shortlist, having emerged as a key player for the Lions in the Championship this season, although it remains to be seen whether West Ham will be able to lure him away from a rival club.

Tanganga has Premier League experience from his time with Tottenham Hotspur, and there are now suggestions the Hammers could also be eyeing a player who is currently plying his trade in the top flight.

According to a report from The Sun, the Irons are keen on a move for Southampton centre-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who could be keen on a move away from his current club this summer, with the Saints looking extremely likely to drop to the Championship.

Harwood-Bellis has recently changed agent, which can indicate a player is set to pursue a move, and Southampton would be likely to demand a fee of around £15m, which would make him an affordable option for West Ham, who are keen on new additions at the back.

Harwood-Bellis impressing for club and country

It has been a far from ideal season for the Saints, who look set to be relegated from the Premier League, but the 23-year-old has been one of the only shining lights in a poor side, ranking among their most consistent performers.

The Englishman’s form earlier this season earned him a Three Lions call-up, and he certainly made the most of the opportunity, scoring the fifth goal in a 5-0 battering of the Republic of Ireland.

The former Manchester City man has been a consistent goal threat over the past year, ranking in the 85th percentile for non-penalty goals per 90, while his defensive ability has also been on display, placing in the 99th percentile for blocks, when compared to his positional peers.

The Southampton ace has also been lauded as “exceptional” by members of the media in the past, and his performances this season indicate he definitely deserves another chance in the Premier League.

As such, West Ham should pursue a deal for Harwood-Bellis this summer, particularly considering a £15m asking price is very reasonable, and the Saints are set to be in a weak negotiating position if they drop back down to the Championship.
