"Exceptional" £50m Star Could Be Bad News For Man United Ace

Manchester United are in talks with Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana and are currently in pole position to bring him to the Premier League – but this could spell the end of David de Gea's time at Old Trafford.

What’s the latest on Andre Onana to Manchester United?

A new update on United’s pursuit of the shot-stopper has emerged, with Football Insider claiming the Red Devils are now the frontrunners to sign Onana during the transfer window.

A fee of around £50m will be enough to secure his signature as the uncertainty surrounding the future of De Gea rumbles on. The £375k-per-week star is out of contract at the end of this month and a new deal is yet to be signed off by Erik ten Hag.

Could Andre Onana replace David de Gea at Manchester United?

The Spaniard won the Golden Glove award for the 2022/23 Premier League season having kept 16 clean sheets – the second time he had claimed the award.

Despite this, he made a few high-profile errors, most notably against West Ham United, where he fumbled a weak Said Benrahma shot that resulted in a goal for the Hammers. This ended up being his fourth error that led to a goal – the joint-most of any player in the league, alongside Hugo Lloris.

He arguably should have done better during their defeat in the FA Cup final to Manchester City, as he failed to stop Ilkay Gundogan's shot from the edge of the area in the 2-1 loss, and a move for Onana could spell bad news for the United No 1.

The Cameroonian enjoyed a stellar year for Inter, especially in the Champions League, as his performances allowed the club to reach their first final since 2010, narrowly losing to City.

Across 13 matches in the competition, Onana averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.41/10, while conceding just 0.8 goals per game and managing to keep eight clean sheets, demonstrating his shot-stopping abilities well.

The ‘keeper ranks in the top 11% for touches per 90 (43.81) across Europe’s big five leagues and ranks in the top 10% for passes attempted per 90 (35.46), suggesting he is extremely comfortable with the ball at his feet and regularly plays passes, and he could certainly fit in well with Ten Hag’s philosophy of playing out from the back.

Andre Onana

His ability was even lauded by Pep Guardiola, who claimed that Onana was “exceptional with his feet” before the Champions League final, proving just how highly regarded he is.

It would be a wonderful signing for United and he could play an integral role in the side next season as Ten Hag chases more silverware next term.

PSG player ratings vs Nice: Disastrous defending costs Parisians in loss despite Kylian Mbappe double

Les Parisiens have serious issues at the back to address, something they showed in their first loss of the Ligue 1 season

Paris Saint-Germain were hit on the break three times, and, despite the heroics of Kylian Mbappe, failed to salvage a point in a disappointing home loss to Nice. Mbappe scored twice, but PSG's calamitous transition defending muted his efforts, as the Parisians fell 3-2.

The home side had the majority of the possession in the early goings but they couldn't find the net — and were punished by a more opportunistic away side. Terem Moffi provided the Nice goal, benefitting from a scramble inside the PSG box to poke the ball into the bottom corner with Gianluigi Donnarumma static. It was almost two shortly after, but Donnarumma made a full-length stop to deny Khephren Thuram's long-range effort.

Mbappe offered the PSG response, whipping the ball into the back of the net from outside the box. He was inches away from adding a second before the break, lashing a shot just wide of the post.

Nice went ahead once again in the second half, with Moffi shifting around a lunge from Danilo Pereira before feeding Gaetan Laborde, who couldn't miss at the back post. The striker bagged Nice's third 10 minutes later, evading two defenders before curling a fine effort into the bottom corner.

But Mbappe gave PSG life, guiding a volley past the keeper with five minutes to play. However, a third never came, and the Parisians were left frustrated in their first loss of the 2023-24 campaign.

GOAL rates PSG's players from Parc des Princes…

Getty ImagesGoalkeeper & Defence

Gianluigi Donnarumma (6/10):

Almost gave away a goal early on after a blunder at the back. Made an excellent save to deny Thuram. Couldn't really do anything about any of the three goals.

Achraf Hakimi (6/10):

Assisted Mbappe's equaliser after a neat run. Wasn't very effective in shutting down Moffi, who ran riot in the channel between him and Pereira.

Danilo Pereira (5/10):

Preferred to Marquinhos, who was late returning from international duty. Made to look silly in the run up to Nice's second goal.

Milan Skriniar (5/10):

Should have cleared the ball ahead of Nice's opener. Can be considered culpable for the third, too.

Lucas Hernandez (5/10):

Didn't recover particularly effectively on the counter, and was made to pay. Doesn't offer much going forward, either.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesMidfield

Carlo Soler (5/10):

Played as the most advanced of the midfield three in his first start of the season. Looked out of sorts with little game time under his belt.

Warren Zaire-Emery (6/10):

Played in a slightly deeper role than he's used to, and failed to impress. Needs Manuel Ugarte's strength in there to really thrive.

Vitinha (6/10):

Created the most chances in the match, linked well with Mbappe. Probably the most effective of the midfield trio — although he had little to show for it.

Getty ImagesAttack

Ousmane Dembele (5/10):

Missed badly when his team trailed. Made the wrong decision on a few occasions. Far from his best.

Goncalo Ramos (6/10):

Didn't have too many chances, but put plenty of work in off the ball. The big-money signing might need time to bed in.

Kylian Mbappe (8/10):

In the XI despite some fears of a knee injury sustained while on international duty. Gave the ball away in the run up to the Nice goal. Redeemed himself by bagging the equaliser, as well as the PSG second. Not his fault that the team lost.

Manuel Ugarte (7/10):

Steadied the midfield after a poor start to the second half. He looks like a top signing.

Randal Kolo Muani (7/10):

Assisted Mbappe on his debut, and offered a much-needed injection of pace.

Bradley Barcola (6/10):

Active without being impressive. Needs minutes to showcase his stuff.

Luis Enrique (5/10):

Handed Ramos and Soler starts, and failed to get much of a performance out of his side shortly after the international break. This was his first big hiccup in charge after two draws — he will certainly hope that there won't be many more.

Everton Look Likely Now To Secure Fresh Investment

Everton's prospects of striking an investment deal with 777 Partners is now not something that will happen following news that they have reached an exclusivity agreement with MSP Capital, according to journalist Paul Brown.

What's the latest news involving Everton?

As per The Liverpool Echo, Everton owner Farhad Moshiri is 'inching closer' to closing a deal with MSP to give the Toffees some fresh investment, having entered an 'exclusivity agreement' that will last from a period of 30 to 60 days.

The report states that MSP will acquire a stake of 20-25% of Everton and will initially purchase preferential shares rather than equity and will also help to finance the building of the new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock.

BBC Sport understand that a deal is not yet completed; nevertheless, talks are said to be 'progressing further' and they have stumped 777 in their own efforts to perform a takeover of the club.

Everton need finance to be ploughed into the club as they wait on the results of being referred to an independent commission over 'potential breaches of the league’s profitability and sustainability guidelines'. However, the verdict of the Premier League's investigation will not be made clear until October, as per Football Insider.

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Brown has said that any deal with 777 is now 'off the table' due to MSP's exclusivity agreement.

Brown told FFC: "As far as I'm aware, any deal with 777 is currently off the table completely. MSP have a period of exclusivity with Everton and it does look like they want to proceed. The original offer from them was not dependent on which division Everton were in, so it doesn't in theory matter if Everton go down this weekend or not, it might affect the price they pay to buy in."

What next for Everton?

Everton face a massive final Premier League match this weekend and know that a win against Bournemouth will guarantee their top-flight safety for another season.

Sean Dyche will have to make do without right-back Nathan Patterson on Sunday and there is also concern over whether striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin will be able to feature, as per The Liverpool Echo.

Everton'sDominicCalvert-Lewin

Change could be in the winds on the blue half of Merseyside, with the Daily Record claiming that the Toffees have started to sound out potential replacements for manager Dyche.

Botafogo manager Luis Castro is believed to have had 'initial contact' with Everton over the possibility of replacing Dyche. However, it is unclear what the permutations of the long-term will be until full-time on Sunday as the Blues desperately try to secure their Premier League status.

If Dyche manages to keep Everton afloat, the 51-year-old will have achieved his remit set when he was brought to the club back in January and will have given a platform for the club to build on come 2023/24.

England's mettle to be truly tested

On an absorbing sunny Saturday, in front of a packed and rapt full house, Pakistan’s second innings listed and creaked but they hauled themselves to a dominant position

Andrew Miller at Lord's16-Jul-2016A month ago, on this very ground, Alastair Cook faced up to the press on the final day of the Sri Lanka series and bemoaned the fact that – after two facile victories in the opening two Tests of the summer – rain had robbed his developing team of a timely test of their mettle. “It would have been good to put us under pressure,” he had said. Well, he’s going to get his wish on Sunday, and no mistake. On an absorbing sunny Saturday, in front of a packed and rapt full house, Pakistan’s second innings listed and creaked and, with Chris Woakes producing yet another display of outstanding attacking swing bowling, they came close to capsizing on more than one occasion. And yet, by the close, Pakistan had ridden out the jitters and found sufficient resistance from their lower-middle order to put themselves in a position of undeniable dominance. With a lead of 281 already banked, and on a surface that is beginning to offer both turn and variable bounce, Pakistan know as well as England that – in the legspinner Yasir Shah, not to mention a potent trio of left-arm seamers – they have an attack that can wrap up a first victory at Lord’s since 1996.”I’d like to say we are just in front,” said Mickey Arthur, Pakistan’s coach. “It’s very close, almost too close to call. I think we are in for a cracking day’s cricket tomorrow, if we can sneak another 19-20 and get just over 300, it’s going to be a very, very good Test match.”Moeen Ali, England’s offspinning allrounder, didn’t try to disagree with that sentiment. Having been bundled out for 272 on the second afternoon – with Yasir claiming figures of 6 for 72 in his first Test outside of Asia – he admitted that England’s batsmen would need to formulate a better plan second-time around if they want to avoid being shown up for the second innings in a row.”In the first innings, we didn’t bat very well, so we want to put that right,” Moeen said. “There’s a lot of us who want to score some runs, but it’s going to be tough. They are a very good bowling side and you saw in the first innings, they have a very good legspinner who’s going to cause us trouble.”England’s problems in the first innings stemmed largely from Yasir’s control. With little in the way of big spin on offer, line and length – allied to natural variation and the odd ripper – were sufficient to destabilise an England middle order for whom the legend of Shane Warne is but a distant noise in the commentary box. In the ten years since his retirement, practical experience of such artistry has been thin on the ground, and it showed in the manner of all too many dismissals.”The guys will come out with definite plans,” said Moeen. “We’ve been preparing very well against legspinners but, in the first innings, we didn’t play very well against him, and he got a lot of wickets, so he’s going to be the biggest threat tomorrow.”In the first innings we were caught in the crease a lot and didn’t use our feet against him. But sometimes, when it’s not spinning, it’s a little bit harder because he bowls very accurately. In the next innings, we’ll have to be good on our feet, whether back or forward, but the lack of bounce did us a little bit in the first innings. We are just going to have to play well. We’ve all got runs in the past so we are going to have to use that experience and play well against him.”On the evidence of Moeen’s own bowling performance, a lack of bounce won’t be the issue on a gently deteriorating Lord’s surface. If Misbah-ul-Haq’s suicidal mo(w) to deep midwicket was a clear case of batsman error, then the ball that did for an extraordinarily skittish Younis Khan clearly gripped before cannoning into his stumps off an inside edge.Still, Moeen was happy to accept the offerings, particularly after a fallow first innings in which a far more focused Misbah had beaten him out of the attack with a volley of dead-eyed sweeps and reverse-sweeps.”I actually felt like I bowled all right in the first innings, but Misbah … I just can’t bowl at him at times,” he said. “I try to do a holding job but it’s very difficult, so I was very pleased to get him out today. But I’m happy with how I’m bowling at the moment. I felt like it came out just as well [in the first innings] but I just got smashed. That can happen.”The assistance for Moeen, second-time around, may have had as much to do with the rough outside off that Pakistan’s trio of left-arm quicks had created, but the doubts, where Yasir is concerned, are already embedded in England’s minds. Arthur didn’t need much invitation to begin the probing on behalf of his team.”I think we saw there was a little bit on offer,” he said. “The one that got Younis gripped quite big. And it’s a little bit up-and-down as well, there’s variable bounce which is great, so hopefully it will assist Yasir in a big way.”The wider concern for England is that Pakistan’s team are far from a one-trick outfit. In fact, as Yasir himself admitted after the first innings, his own success had only arisen because he had set himself to do a holding roll for his seamers. But on that occasion, amid the emotion of Mohammad Amir’s return to the fray, their lines and their disciplines went fractionally awry, and Arthur was adamant they’d be better for having got all that out of their systems.Amir, he claimed, had been so nervous before his opening spell that he could barely grip the ball. But, he added, “he hit his areas more often than not and did a job at good pace. Hopefully he can take that into tomorrow. Everything that’s gone has gone now, he’s back out on the field, raring to go tomorrow, and hopefully he can bowl us to victory.”However, England’s task could and perhaps should be significantly less daunting than it already is. On a day when Woakes’ penetration kept them in the contest, Steven Finn produced his best spell of a difficult match, only to see two catches in three overs go down. The second, by Jonny Bairstow off Sarfraz Ahmed, was especially culpable, and Moeen admitted that England’s standards had not been high enough of late.”We spoke about it,” he said. “We haven’t been catching very well this summer, and we are going to have to get better. Going back to the Ashes [in 2015], the reason we won it was some brilliant catches. We held on to everything so we know we can field better. Hopefully we can go bang, bang tomorrow and keep them less than 300-310. It’s still going to be tough, but we’ve got players hopefully who can knock them off.”Pakistan, however, have a legspinner who can knock England off in return, and Moeen knows that he stands squarely in their way.”Pakistan spinners are always very attacking and tactically very good,” said Moeen. “Yasir is always attacking the stumps so, as a batter, you feel like you’ve got to play, but he does bowl bad balls as well. He’s a human being at the end of the day. He can have a bad day as well.”

Liverpool Could Sign "Dangerous" £45m Midfielder This Summer

Liverpool are in desperate need of reinforcements this summer following a tumultuous season that has seen their once-successful squad turn stale in recent months.

The Reds have been knocked out of every opportunity to win a trophy this season and are currently ten points adrift of the Champions League qualifying spots inside the Premier League top four ahead of their clash with Arsenal this weekend.

Indeed, reinvestment into the forward line seems to have been the priority for FSG over the last two seasons, with Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo all making the move to Merseyside to compete for a spot in the club's infamous front three.

However, this focus on forwards has left other areas of the pitch to decline, with several key players reaching the latter stages of their careers – including Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Thiago Alcantara, Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip, who are all well into their 30s at this point.

As a result, it will be absolutely imperative that the Anfield powerbrokers utilise the summer transfer window to spark a youth revolution by adding young and hungry talents into the centre of the pitch and defensive setup ahead of next season.

One player who has recently been linked to a Liverpool move is PSV Eindhoven midfielder Ibrahim Sangare, a player who could not only be a cheaper alternative to fellow transfer target Matheus Nunes, but be a better all-round player than the Wolverhampton Wanderers ace.

Will Liverpool sign Ibrahima Sangare?

Liverpool have failed to permanently sign a midfielder since Thiago joined from Bayern Munich back in 2020, so new additions to the midfield personnel will surely be warmly welcomed by the Anfield faithful.

Not only that, but Naby Keita, Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are all set to make an exit this summer due to their contracts expiring, which only adds more pressure to the Liverpool hierarchy's efforts to identify and secure the services of quality midfielders who can add depth to the heart of the team.

There is no doubt that the signing of Sangare would be a major coup for the Merseyside giants this summer and would be a much better addition than long-term Liverpool target Nunes.

When comparing his positional peer's outputs this season, the PSV star has outperformed Nunes comfortably in several attacking areas, including goals scored (4 v 1), pass completion rate (84.3% v 80.2%), shot-creating actions per 90 (2.52 v 2.29) and progressive passes completed (158 v 73).

Meanwhile, Sangare has provided a much better defensive output with a better rate of successful take-ons (75% v 52.3%), more tackles and interceptions won (79 v 63), more ball recoveries (208 v 116) and a better success rate in aerial duels (62.7% v 45.9%) – as per FBref.

Premier League, Liverpool, Liverpool news, Liverpool latest news, Liverpool update, Liverpool team news, Liverpool transfers, Liverpool transfer news, LFC news, LFC latest news, LFC update, LFC transfers, LFC transfer news, Ibrahim Sangare

It is clear that Sangare – hailed "dangerous" by analyst Aad de Mos – is much more of a prolific and complete all-rounder in the centre of the pitch compared to the Portuguese ace, and would even cost Liverpool £5m less to sign with a price tag of £45m compared to the £50m fee reported for Nunes.

With that being said, it seems like it would be a no-brainer to snap up Sangare this summer, and if Liverpool could strike a good deal it could save the club millions to invest into other key roles that need addressing.

Liverpool Keen On Deal To Bring £45m Midfielder To Anfield

Liverpool are interested in completing a deal to bring PSV Eindhoven midfielder Ibrahim Sangare to the Premier League, according to reports in the last 48 hours.

What's the latest on Sangare's future?

The Reds have James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita all out of contract at the end of the season, whilst Arthur Melo is set to return to Juventus after the board decided not to take up his buy option, so central reinforcements will be needed during the upcoming window.

Jurgen Klopp has been linked with several potential candidates, predominantly Jude Bellingham and Mason Mount, but 25-year-old midfielder Sangare is one of the most recent names to crop up.

The Ivory Coast international's contract at the Philips Stadion isn't set to run out until 2027, but as Ruud van Nistelrooy's best-performing defensive player, as per WhoScored, he's been attracting interest.

Speaking to Voetbal International, the manager himself challenged his standout star to "go to the top" in England and make a name for himself at the highest level – which sounds exactly like what he might be about to do.

The Merseyside outfit, along with Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham, are reportedly known admirers and have already been alerted by Sangare's representatives that he is likely to be available for a transfer at the end of the season, while it appears FSG have positively responded to that information and are now considering a swoop.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool are "keen" on a move for Sangare, who has been identified as a player who's seriously "on the radar" of possible targets at Anfield. PSV's maestro was supposedly of interest last summer but a switch failed to materialise, though the club have now been given the perfect second chance, with the Eredivisie giants "open" to letting him go for a fee of around £45m.

PSV Eindhoven midfielder Ibrahim Sangare.

Would Sangare fit the bill at Liverpool?

Sangare has been lauded as a "class act" and someone who can control a midfield by journalist Josh Bunting, and with him possessing strong qualities in the defensive and offensive aspects of his game, we think he would be the perfect candidate to put pen to paper for Klopp.

The 6 foot 3 colossus, who would add a different dimension to the centre with his height, naturally sits in front of the back four and loves to get stuck in and stop attacks, as shown by him ranking in the 93rd percentile for blocks and in the 90th for tackles among players in his position at similar-level competitions over the past year, as per FBref.

Whilst more used to operating in this position, he also has the versatility to play slightly higher up the field in central and attacking midfield, which gives him the freedom to contribute in the final third.

Sangare has scored seven goals and provided three assists in 38 appearances across all competitions this season, so is able to make a positive difference at both ends of the pitch, meaning that the Reds shouldn't even have to think twice about wrapping up a deal.

Marcelo Bielsa signing was a complete Leeds transfer disaster

Leeds United’s long-standing flirtation with a return to the Premier League became one of the big stories outside the top flight, as the sleeping giant finally seemed to be stirring as they crept back up towards the apex of the Championship.

The Whites had enjoyed steady progress under Marcelo Bielsa, which would culminate in their triumphant 2020 promotion to end a 16-year absence from the top flight.

The squad who achieved the feat became instant heroes, and the Argentine a god in Yorkshire. He was the man who had done what so many before him had failed to do, and he had done so with a brand of football that captured the imagination.

However, whilst it was unknown at the time, one member of that team would seek to undermine the accomplishment through the antics of his parent club.

That player was Jean-Kevin Augustin, and the club in question RB Leipzig.

What happened with Jean-Kevin Augustin at Leeds?

Having signed on loan for the 2019/2020 season, a year interrupted due to the pandemic, the Frenchman was expected to offer fine cover for the imperious Patrick Bamford.

Across that season the English marksman would score 16 and assist a further four, featuring in all but one of their league games.

It, therefore, left the 25-year-old resigned to the sidelines, as he would feature just three times before his loan concluded. It seemed like things would simply move on and the forward would be a forgotten piece of that infamous outfit, yet two years following the German team would win a case that enforced the Yorkshire outfit to pay £18m to sign Augustin permanently.

According to the Red Bulls, a clause was inserted into the deal that noted a mandatory future fee should they achieve promotion, whilst Leeds argued that due to COVID-19 delaying the season, that feat was achieved outside the time frame of the deal.

Having lost in an appeal to the Court of Arbitration, they were ordered to fork up the sum although they would later reach an unknown settlement.

Given he made just three appearances, and the proposed fee they may well have paid, the underwhelming frontman would have cost the club £6m per appearance.

Having suffered from what former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson described as a “stop-start” career at the time of joining Leeds, this debacle did little to get his career back on track.

It was a complete disaster all-round stemming from their brightest moment in their recent history, whilst Augustin now plies his trade in Switzerland, where he plays for Basel.
