For the second time in as many days Jofra Archer produced a display that sent shock waves through the game
Andrew Miller at Lord's18-Aug-2019Do you remember where you were when Jonah Lomu trampled over Mike Catt in the 1995 Rugby World Cup semi-final?Do you remember how he gathered the ball almost with his back to play, and seemed to amble down the left wing, with the pace of a sprinter but the momentum of a juggernaut, keeping his balance as Will Carling attempted a tap-tackle, before spring-boarding off Catt’s chest to seal the most iconic try of his career?Do you remember that he was 20 years old back then, a freak of nature with the height of a lock forward, the bulk of a prop and the speed of a leopard, and do you remember how he’d been an open secret all World Cup long … quietly devastating in the group stages, but knowingly holding back an extra gear for the tournament’s sharp end?And do you remember thinking, "Jesus Christ, I’ve never seen anything like this in my life”?ALSO READ: Smith hoping to be fit for Headingley after ‘mild concussion’This is how it has felt to watch Jofra Archer in the past 24 hours. This is how it has felt to watch him return to the scene of the greatest triumph of most cricketers’ careers, and make his Super Over heroics in the World Cup final seem like a prologue to his truest calling. He said before the match that red-ball cricket was the format that suited him best, and we coughed politely, thinking: “Mate, you’ve conquered the world at the age of 24 … we’ve seen it all already, surely”? For the second day running … well, we’ve seen it all now, surely.Except … we clearly haven’t. Because, by the standards of any ordinary debutant performance, Archer’s final match figures of 5 for 91 in 44 overs would be classed as “promising”;, even “very promising”, but not much more than that.”The boy’s got an exciting future,” one might even be moved to write, and certainly, Tim Paine, Australia’s captain wasn’t about to get swept up in the moment. “Guys have been around bowling 145, 150ks for a long time,” he said. “It’s a challenge but that’s why we’re playing Test cricket.”But the Sunday write-ups might prove to be a bit more excitable than that. For Archer’s Lord’s performance has made a mockery of circumstance. There was no way that an ordinary cricketer should have been unleashing 96mph thunderbolts in his 24th over with a 76-over-old ball, as Archer did on that extraordinary fourth afternoon. And there’s no way that a bowler who had stampeded down the slope at the Pavilion End to such tremulous effect should have been able to amend his angles so effortlessly from the Nursery End, in only his second first-class contest at the ground, remember, and unleash another reign of terror that briefly threatened to tear this contest wide open again on the final day.
It was several long minutes of examination and speculation about the ‘concussion sub’s concussion sub’ before Labuschagne was cleared to continue his steadfast innings
In the first innings, Archer had been a touch too short with the new ball, not quite challenging the bat in the manner that Chris Woakes might have done, and there was a school of thought, shared most notably by a fellow firebrand, Mitchell Johnson on TMS, that Joe Root would have been better off trusting the precious new ball to a man who averaged 9.75 with the ball on this ground and who combined with Stuart Broad right here last month to rout Ireland for 38 inside 16 overs. But there was a different dynamic at play in the denouement to this contest – because England clearly felt that the pursuit of an unlikely victory was inextricably linked to the crushing of Australia’s soul.Enter Archer, and exit David Warner for his fourth single-figure score in a row, caught poking on the top of off every bit as expertly as Woakes, or James Anderson, or any of the great Lord’s slope-exploiters might have done in the past. But with Australia’s one true route to an improbable run-chase gone, and with Marnus Labuschagne – making history as Test cricket’s first concussion replacement – soon in Archer’s sights as Usman Khawaja fenced a flier through the keeper, Lord’s ordinary rules of new-ball engagement went flying over the pavilion fence.Labuschagne’s first delivery of the Ashes didn’t even register as a delivery at all, it was such a short and shatteringly quick bouncer that Jonny Bairstow did well to claw it down. But the second … my God, the second.Nasty, brutish, and short … just as Labuschagne’s Ashes campaign briefly threatened to be, as his head recoiled like the butt of a 12-bore shotgun as another impossible-to-avoid exocet crashed into his grille. To his credit Labuschagne watched it as well as he could, wrenching his face out of line only when the final split-second made it clear that a collision was inevitable. And though he fell to the floor he was up before you could start the count, shrugging his shoulders and puffing his chest like a nightclub brawler who still wanted some, alwight? But it was several long minutes of examination and speculation about the “concussion sub’s concussion sub” before he was cleared to continue an admirably steadfast innings that lived up to his mock-able billing as Steve Smith’s like-for-like replacement. By the time of his disputed extraction at short midwicket for 59, he had carried their combined average for the series to 109.25 by posting their eighth consecutive Ashes half-century.But that is the thing about Archer’s impact on this Test. It hasn’t been measurable by your everyday statistics – no more than three wickets in either innings, as well as a spell that genuinely amounted to a waste of the first new ball on Friday’s truncated action. And nor did it even lead to victory, irrespective of his late – and frankly questionable return for a final five-over burst: Joe Root, you are aware the Headingley Test starts in just four days’ time, aren’t you? But, neither did Lomu’s World Cup campaign – New Zealand ran out of road in South Africa’s glorious final, and sadly he never got a better chance. But that did not detract from the fact that an iconic awakening had been witnessed.Ben Stokes, a gruff Kiwi-Cumbrian not given to hyperbole – especially not in the wake of his own outstanding performance in this Test match – described Archer’s performance as “frightening”, and there’s no doubt that his impact, literal and otherwise, was as chilling as his demeanour was ice-cool.Joe Root gives Jofra Archer a hug•AFPLike Michael Holding before him (and one doesn’t make that level of connection lightly), Archer’s rhythmical approach seems to have a hypnotic effect on batsman who, even deep into an innings, can sometimes seem stunned at just how much heat he can generate without any apparent effort. And like Malcolm Marshall (ditto), he comes armed with a bouncer that can skid into helmets with liquid, lethal intent, and perhaps unsurprisingly has struck more of his opponents (15) since his international debut in May than any other bowler on the world game.Is it too soon to make such comparisons? Perhaps, though sometimes you just have to make the big calls on big careers (and again, it’s not as if Archer hasn’t just bowled England to a World Cup win within weeks of his international debut). And even if, for whatever reason, he ends up falling short of what might have been – and over-use seems the likeliest route to unfulfillment – it’s hard to recall many fast-bowling debuts that will resonate like this one. It’s been 33 years and counting since Patrick Patterson, for instance, chilled England’s batsmen to the marrow with his lethal debut at Sabina Park in 1985-86. And no matter where he ended up in the pecking order, Graham Gooch, for one, will tell you to this day that that was the fastest and most frightening thing he ever faced.Steve Smith, you suspect, may one day admit the same. There will be challenges ahead, not least for his captain Root, who seemed in danger of playing with his new toy to destruction in turning to so often and in so many roles, to the extent that shortly after the close, Archer self-mockingly tweeted a gif of a man with a walking stick struggling to get off a sofa.”It’s something new to work with,” Root said. "He makes things happen when not many others in world cricket can. He has such a unique action and way of bowling, and obviously natural pace which is always going to be in the game on any surface. So when you’ve got that and the skill of the other guys around it, it makes for a tasty combination.”It makes for a tasty Ashes denouement too. Even as England’s unrivalled summer of cricket clicks into an autumnal hue, there’s everything to play for, and one man in particular making most of those plays.
Bangladesh captain Shanto meanwhile said his batters weren’t used to playing bowlers with a slingy action like Thushara’s
Mohammad Isam10-Mar-2024Kusal Mendis was reminded of Lasith Malinga when he watched Nuwan Thushara bowl a match-winning spell of 5 for 20, which included a hat-trick, in the third T20I against Bangladesh.”I’m very happy for him,” Mendis said. “With the World Cup around the corner, it’s great to have many of our bowlers in such form. He’s been playing in franchise leagues for some time – he played well in South Africa [SA20] as well – I think that’s also why he was able to give his best for the team when we needed him.”It was those three wickets [in his hat-trick] that the match turned in our favour. It reminded me of how [Lasith Malinga] bowled.”Related

Thushara claims hat-trick on way to five-for to finish Bangladesh off in decider
Shanto: 'Sri Lanka haven't moved on from timed-out incident'
Coming in to bowl in the fourth over of Bangladesh’s chase of 175, Thushara, who has a slingy, low-arm action similar to Malinga, removed the Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto off the second ball and then dismissed Towhid Hridoy and Mahmudullah to complete his hat-trick. All three were full, swinging deliveries as he deceived the batters with his pace, swing and low bounce. He later removed Soumya Sarkar and Shoriful Islam to complete the five-for, his best figures in T20Is.”I agree that the whole match pivoted in that one over,” Shanto said. “He bowled a very good over. I think we have to credit the bowler. We were held back by that over. I felt that if we could have handled that over better, or generally held our own against the new ball, we could have had a different result.”He got a bit of swing. He has that action. He wasn’t getting a lot of bounce due to his side-arm action. It was keeping low. This won’t happen all the time, but we have to tackle these things better in the future.”We don’t usually get to play a bowling action like his. We played well against [Matheesha] Pathirana in the first two matches. I think the new ball swung a lot. We have to plan better, and accept such things in international cricket.”Kusal Mendis was in top form in the series•AFP/Getty ImagesBangladesh also had to contend with a familiar threat in the form of Mendis, who made 86 off 55 to single-handedly take Sri Lanka to a competitive 174 for 7. He now has six fifties against Bangladesh, the the most by any batter in T20Is against this opposition. He also finished the T20I series as the highest run-scorer with 181 from three games.”In the previous couple of T20s before this series I wasn’t really in the runs, so in the first game I was focusing on providing the team with what it needs,” Mendis said. “More than me scoring runs, I wanted to do what was best for the team, and I’m glad I was able to do that consistently over the series.”It gets a little easier to bat here [in Sylhet] once you’re at the crease for a while, especially under lights. The boundaries are also close in, so you can score boundaries in any way that you’re comfortable. I’m happy with the way I performed in these conditions.”Shanto meanwhile said there were a few positives in Bangladesh’s defeat, picking out legspinner Rishad Hossain for his all-round abilities. “He [Rishad] bowled very well according to the conditions,” Shanto said. “We needed his batting because we now play with six specialist batters and an allrounder. I think his batting is one to look out for the future.”There were positives in this series. The way we fought back even after losing early wickets, in the first match and the third match. The way the bowlers made a comeback in this game.”

This was the first time since 1936 that South Africa lost successive Tests by an innings
S Rajesh23-Oct-2019Lungi Ngidi’s bizarre dismissal on the fourth morning in Ranchi – caught off a ball which hit the non-striker – mercifully brought a quick end to what has been an utterly shambolic series for South Africa. With both bat and ball, they were completely outplayed in each of the three Tests, and that is reflected in the series stats. In several parameters, these are the worst numbers for South Africa since their return to international cricket in 1992.The overall series numbersESPNcricinfo LtdThere have been two other series of at least three Tests, since their readmission, in which South Africa have lost every game, and both were against Australia – at home in 2005-06, and away in 2001-02. But they weren’t outplayed in this manner, in terms of the difference between their batting and bowling averages. In fact, this was the first time since 1936 that South Africa lost successive Tests by an innings.Over these three Tests in India, South Africa averaged 23.01 with the bat, and 76.92 with the ball. The difference a whopping 53.91, which is the largest ever for them in any series since their readmission. In fact, it’s almost twice as much as the next-highest difference of 27.67 in the 2006 series in Sri Lanka, when Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene had that massive partnership of 624.The 10 series with the highest difference have all either been in India, Sri Lanka, or against Australia, illustrating the opponents/countries which have been the toughest for them. The wickets mismatchSouth Africa took 25 wickets in the entire series, while India took all 60 that were on offer. The difference of 35 is the highest ever in South Africa’s history. Since their readmission, that difference had never exceeded 22 before this series; in fact there is only one other series when the difference has gone beyond 20 (when the opposition team took more wickets than South Africa). In the 94 series South Africa have played since their readmission (including one-off Tests), only 26 times have opposition team taken more wickets than South Africa.
Apart from failing to take wickets, the bowlers also struggled to keep the Indian batsmen in check: India’s overall run rate for the series was 4.03, making this only the third series since 1992 when South Africa have leaked more than four runs per over. The two previous instances were both against Australia, in 2002 and 2012.Pacers take a beatingTraditionally, pace has always been South Africa’s strength. In 94 series since their readmission, only 11 times has the opposition pace attack taken more wickets than they have, while there have been 24 instances of opposition fast bowlers finishing with a better average. However, the difference has never been as vast as in this series, in terms of average, wickets taken or strike rate. While India’s fast bowlers took 26 wickets at 17.50, South Africa’s managed just 10, at 70.2. The difference of 52.70 is easily the worst, more than twice as bad as the next-highest difference (in series where the seamers of each team have bowled at least 10 overs). The top six in this list is dominated by series against Australia.ESPNcricinfo LtdIn terms of wickets taken by fast bowlers in a series, the difference of 16 is four more than the next-highest difference of 12, when South Africa toured New Zealand in 2016-17. Back then, New Zealand’s seamers took 33 wickets in three Tests at 29.78 to South Africa’s 21 at 38.8. (However, South Africa’s pace attack was rescued by Keshav Maharaj, who took 15 wickets at 19.93, far-cry from his meagre haul of six wickets at 85.66 in this series.)The strike rate difference in this series was 96.50, which means South Africa’s seamers bowled 16 more overs per wicket than their Indian counterparts. That is an additional hour of bowling per wicket. Again, it’s comfortably their worst performance in a series since readmission.
The disappearing top orderOver the three Tests, South Africa’s average partnership for the top five wickets was 17.10, compared to India’s 91.05. India’s top five had six century partnerships and three other 50-plus stands in 20 attempts, compared to one half-century and century stand for South Africa. The difference was embarrassing.Again, never has South Africa’s top order been outplayed so thoroughly in a series since their readmission. The previous highest difference in average partnership for the top five wickets in a series for South Africa was 32.27, which is less than half the current difference of 73.95. In terms of ratio, India’s top five wickets scored more than five times the runs per partnership, compared to South Africa.
South Africa’s lower order did much better in comparison, averaging 28.93 runs per partnership. The difference of 11.83 is the second-highest for South Africa since readmission (in series where each of top and lower orders have had at least 10 partnerships). The largest difference of 12.24 was also against India, in the home series of 1996-97. Had the top order shown some of the fight exhibited by the lower order, South Africa would have at least made the Indian bowlers work much harder for the 3-0 scoreline.
da bet7k: Leeds United left it late on the final day of the Championship season but Manor Solomon’s dramatic strike right at the death would secure Daniel Farke’s men the title.
da bet7: Amazingly, both the Whites and their nearest competitors in Burnley would end their mightily impressive campaigns on 100 points each, but Leeds’ sturdy goal difference would hand the esteemed honours over to Farke and Co, instead of more party celebrations taking place at Turf Moor.
But, as much as the West Yorkshire titans have been able to blow teams away with ease in the second tier, the Premier League is a different kettle of fish altogether.
Therefore, some potential attacking recruits are now being linked with a switch to Elland Road to help navigate the tricky step-up in quality.
Leeds' list of attacking targets
Already, Leeds have been linked with a whole host of new faces up top, with reports suggesting that the newly crowned champions might look to snap up Omari Hutchinson from recently relegated Ipswich Town.
Moreover, other rumours indicate that Leeds are intrigued by the prospect of bringing AZ Alkmaar goal machine Troy Parrott back to England, meaning the striker department would also be given a potential facelift.
Yet, there’s one name that sticks out as a top buy away from both Hutchinson and Parrott, with TBR Football revealing that Farke and Co are looking at a number of targets from Celtic, including Hoops attacking hotshot Nicolas Kuhn.
The Whites have had success when shopping from the Glasgow giants in the past, with Whites legend Mark Viduka once plying for his trade for the Scottish titans before becoming a fan’s favourite at Leeds. So, there’s clearly a proven recipe for success right here.
How Kuhn could be even better than James
If Kuhn can lift his game to be on the same level as Viduka’s – who would score a colossal 72 strikes for Leeds – he would further go down as a more impressive winger than Dan James over time, even with the Welshman fresh off just winning the Whites’ Player of the Year accolade.
James should be commended for how he’s managed to turn around his up-and-down stay at Elland Road, with the ex-Manchester United attacker undoubtedly a top-drawer talent in the EFL having previously struggled in the top-flight.
Indeed, the blistering number seven has tallied up a sizeable 41 goal contributions in league action over the last two seasons, but there will be a concern in the air lingering that the 56-time Wales international isn’t cut out for the bright lights of the Premier League.
Indeed, his best tally for a campaign up a division currently sits at a mere four goals and five assists.
On the flip side, Kuhn has proven again and again for Brendan Rodgers’ men – albeit in a far less strenuous top division in the Scottish Premiership – that he can dazzle defences under immense pressure. He’s even scored in the Champions League.
Staggeringly, across all competitions this campaign, including on Europe’s grandest stage, the German forward has amassed a bumper 34 goals and assists from 47 clashes, with a chance in the Premier League to come a deserved next step for the former RB Leipzig winger.

In contrast, James accumulated a lesser 21 from ten fewer clashes, meaning he could take a back-seat now down the right flank for the “breathtaking” winger, as he’s been lauded in the past by pundit Marvin Bartley, to take over.
Obviously, it isn’t set in stone that Kuhn will be able to instantly acclimatise to the pressures of the Premier League, but history might well repeat itself here, especially if the Hoops number 10 can prove he belongs at the daunting level like Viduka before him.

Kelly spent second half of last season at ArsenalLionesses star helped Gunners win Champions LeagueNow signs permanently in London after Man City exitFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?
Kelly spent the second half of the 2024-25 season with the north London club, whose ranks she came through as a young girl. The winger had found herself out of favour at Manchester City, a situation that also led to her losing her spot in the England squad. However, a fruitful few months back in the capital saw Kelly rediscover her form as she played a key part in Arsenal's European triumph and she has now joined the club on a permanent deal, following the expiration of her contract in Manchester.
AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE
That increased game time also paid dividends for Kelly on the international front, allowing her to regain her place in the Lionesses squad ahead of this summer's European Championships. For a while, it looked like a lack of minutes could well cost the 27-year-old her spot, just three years on from her title-winning goal in the final against Germany. But her form with Arsenal changed all of that for the better.
WHAT KELLY SAID
“Putting pen to paper on a permanent contract at Arsenal is a standout moment for me," Kelly said upon the announcement of her permanent return to the Gunners. “Learning from an incredible manager and continuing to build relationships with an excellent team is a journey I’m looking forward to continuing. I’m excited for more silverware at this special club and to bring more trophies back to north London to celebrate with our supporters. I’ve always said that Arsenal supporters are the best and to have them on my side, singing my name, means so much to me."
Head coach Renee Slegers added: “I’m delighted that we’ve been able to make Chloe a permanent signing for us. She had a great impact for us and played an important role in what we achieved here last season, and I know she shares our ambition to compete for more.”
DID YOU KNOW?
Kelly is Arsenal's first signing of the summer window. The Gunners' transfer activity to this point instead concerned the release of players, with defender Amanda Ilestedt, academy product Teyah Goldie and forward Lina Hurtig all leaving the club upon the expiry of their contracts. Hurtig, who will represent Sweden at the Euros this summer alongside Ilestedt, has since signed for Fiorentina.
