Everton flop sold in 2023 is now outscoring Beto & Ndiaye combined

David Moyes has enjoyed a sensational return to life at Goodison Park since he agreed to join Everton for a second spell to replace Sean Dyche in January.

The Scottish manager, who was let go by West Ham United at the end of the 2023/24 campaign, has won four, drawn one, and lost one, of his opening six matches in charge of the Toffees so far.

James Tarkowski’s last-gasp screamer in the 2-2 draw with Liverpool in the last Merseyside derby at Goodison Park earlier this month has, arguably, been the highlight of Moyes’ second tenure to date, and it will be hard to beat.

The former Manchester United boss has racked up 13 points from his first six games and that is significantly better than what Dyche managed when he first arrived at Goodison.

As you can see in the results above, the former Burnley gaffer only racked up seven points in his first six games in charge of the Toffees, with three losses in those six games.

Another thing that Moyes already has over Dyche is that he has managed to get a tune out of Portuguese centre-forward Beto, who has been on fire in recent weeks.

Everton's top goalscorers this season

The former Udinese number nine had only scored one goal in 12 appearances in the Premier League under the former Everton manager in the first-half of the season, after a return of just three goals in 30 league outings in the 2023/24 campaign.

However, Beto has propelled himself to being the second-top scorer for Everton in the top-flight this season with an exceptional haul of four goals in his last three outings in the division.

The 27-year-old marksman struck twice in the 4-0 win over Leicester, opened the scoring against Liverpool in the derby, and netted the opener against Crystal Palace in a 2-1 win last time out.

As you can see in the table above, his recent burst of goals has taken him up to second in the standings and only behind Ndiaye, who has an impressive return of six goals from 4.22 xG.

Meanwhile, Dominic Calvert-Lewin almost has as much xG as Ndiaye and Beto combined and, yet, has only scored three goals in the Premier League this season.

On the topic of strikers, though, there is a former Everton star – Moise Kean – who is now outscoring all three of the current Toffees forwards combined, almost two years on from when the club ruthlessly sold him.

Why Everton sold Moise Kean

The Italy international was initially snapped up by Everton from Juventus in the summer of 2019 for a reported fee of £29m, which could have soared to £37m with add-ons, under Marco Silva.

Unfortunately, the young marksman failed to hit the ground running at Goodison Park and only started six of his 29 Premier League appearances during the 2019/20 campaign, scoring two goals and providing two assists in that time.

He was then sent out on loan to Paris Saint-Germain for the 2020/21 and the Italian ace caught the eye with a return of 19 goals in 45 appearances in all competitions.

Kean returned to Everton and played twice under Rafa Benitez at the start of the 2021/22 campaign before being sent to Juventus on a two-season loan deal that summer, with an obligation to make the deal permanent.

His move to the Old Lady on a permanent basis was confirmed in March 2023 for a reported fee of £25m, after he had scored 11 Serie A goals and had been described as “useless” by journalist Tancredi Palmeri after the 2022 Supercoppa Italiana final against Inter.

Where Are They Now

The Italy international then endured a torrid 2023/24 season with the Serie A giants, as he failed to score in 19 appearances and eight starts, and joined Fiorentina in the summer of 2024.

Moise Kean's stunning form this season

The 24-year-old star has hit his stride in the Serie A since his move to Florence last year, as he has proven that he does have the ability to find the back of the net on a consistent basis in a major European league.

After a return of just 11 goals in three seasons with Juventus, after initially leaving Everton on loan in 2021, Kean has already scored 15 league goals for Fiorentina in the current campaign.

The right-footed sensation has outscored Calvert-Lewin, Beto, and Ndiaye combined (14) at league level this season with his 15 strikes, and has done so in an efficient manner.

Kean, who has struck 19 times in all competitions, has scored 15 times from 12.77 xG and only missed nine ‘big chances’ in the Serie A so far this term, which shows that he has been ruthless in front of goal for the Italian side.

As you can see in the table above, the former Everton flop ranks incredibly highly among forwards in the division in a host of key goalscoring metrics, which illustrates just how well he has performed this season.

The Toffees may, now, regret their decision to completely cut ties with the young centre-forward back in 2021, when they sent him out on loan with an obligation for Juventus to buy him, because he has gone on to develop into a fantastic striker and one who is significantly outperforming all of Moyes’ current options.

Of course, that is with the benefit of hindsight and Kean did struggle at Juventus in the last three seasons before his move to Fiorentina, so there is no guarantee that he would have found his best form if he remained at Goodison Park.

Josh Little's record 6 for 36 puts Ireland 1-0 up

He returned the best-ever figures for an Ireland player in ODIs following which an impressive performance by Campher with the bat guided them home

Josh Little picked career-best figures of 6 for 36•Zimbabwe Cricket

Josh Little returned the best-ever figures for an Ireland player in ODIs to help his team claim a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe with a four-wicket win.Little blew away the Zimbabwe top-order with four wickets – including three in an over – reducing the hosts to 19 for 4. Ryan Burl, Clive Madande and Wellington Masakadza all held fort for a bit as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 166 in 42.5 overs with Little claiming 6 for 36 in 10 overs. In reply, Curtis Campher struck a 71-ball 66 as Ireland completed a win in 40.1 overs.Sikandar Raza elected to bat under blue skies, but was in for a rude awakening. Tinashe Kamunhukamwe struck two fours off Mark Adair but failed to keep a Little short-of-a-length ball down pulling to George Dockrell who took a good catch diving forward. Two balls later Miton Shumba poked at an away-swinger only to offer Lorcan Tucker a simple catch behind the stumps. Little struck for the third time in the fourth over when Joylord Gumbie’s tough stay at the crease ended with him bottom-edging an in-decker back onto his stumps.Zimbabwe were reduced to 16 for 3 after four overs and Little added to their miseries by taking out their captain Raza the next over, who also chopped a length ball onto his off stump.Burl and Madande then staged a brief revival. The duo added 45 off 74 balls for the fifth wicket with Madande being the aggressor scoring a 42-ball 33. He did get a life on 5 when Harry Tector dropped a tough chance at backward point but grew in confidence. His innings was ended by Andy McBrine with deep midwicket moving excellently to his left.Brandon Mavuta came and went as Zimbabwe were reduced to 70 for 6 in 22 overs. But Burl and Masakadza stemmed the collapse through a 63-run stand for the seventh wicket.Masakadza came in and whacked Little for two fours before clobbering McBrine into the stands over deep midwicket. Burl, too, having been circumspect till then broke the shackles by depositing Graham Hume over mid-on.Tector then broke the promising stand by taking out Burl before Little came back to complete his first five-wicket haul in ODIs by removing Masakadza and then cleaned up Ngarava for 1. Mark Adair closed out the Zimbabwe innings in the 43rd over. Burl, who was ruffled by a Little short-ball in the 10th over was concussed out of the game and replaced by Tony Munyonga in the second innings.Lorcan Tucker and Curtis Campher put up a 43-run stand•Zimbabwe Cricket

The surface was not a belter for batters and Andy Balbirnie found that out straightaway when he saw his off pole take a walk first ball courtesy of a Richard Ngarava away-swinger. Paul Stirling got off the mark with a crisp drive but Ngarava and Blessing Muzarabani kept things tight. Stirling was dropped by the keeper on 13 but failed to cash in, getting castled by Muzarabani soon after. Ireland could only manage 29 for 2 after the first powerplay with the two frontline seamers bowling unchanged. The first-change bowler Tanaka Chivanga, however, failed to keep up the pressure. He leaked 15 runs off his first over with Campher taking him for three successive fours. Muzarabani then went four two fours in his next as Ireland kept chugging away.Tector and Campher added 52 for the third wicket before the former was bowled by a peach of a legbreak by Mavuta. Campher, though made sure to keep going and found an ally in Lorcan Tucker. The two pushed Ireland closer to the target when rain interrupted play with the visitors on 101 for 3 after 25, needing 66 off 25 overs. Campher hobbled off into the changeroom holding his side at the rain break but made it back into the middle once play resumed. No overs were lost but Zimbabwe did strike a couple of blows to cause a few flutters in the Irish camp. Campher reached his fifty off 58 balls and then struck a couple of fours. But Mavuta soon had him clean bowled when he missed a sweep to a full-length ball. Muzarabani then saw the back of Tucker for 28 as he finished with excellent figures of 10-2-23-2.Adair and Dockrell, however, kept their composure adding 34 for the sixth wicket. Dockrell fell when just a run was needed for victory before Adair closed the game with a ramp over the wicketkeeper’s head.

Southee hopes to 'be right in time' for World Cup as he begins bowling with 'tender' thumb

He has started to build up the bowling loads, which raises hopes of a swift return after he dislocated his thumb during the series against England

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Oct-2023Tim Southee’s dislocated thumb is still tender and scarred but he has begun bowling and has started to build up his bowling loads, which raises hopes of a swift return at the World Cup. Southee had dislocated his thumb during an ODI against England on September 15, and now has a plate and some screws in his hand to show for it.”It’s still a bit tender where obviously there’s a bit of scarring and a bit of numbness around where the plate is,” Southee said upon arrival in Ahmedabad, two days before New Zealand’s tournament opener against England. “So I guess it’s just [about] getting used to that. And getting back into some bowling. Haven’t done a lot of bowling over the last couple of weeks, so it’s about getting your loads back up as well as managing the thumb.”Related

Greatest ODIs: Elation and despair duel in Auckland

The outlook wasn’t always this optimistic. “It’s been a crazy couple of weeks,” Southee said. “A bit of a race against time to get here, but managed to get here and it’s a great place to come. It’s an awesome place to come and play cricket, let alone being a World Cup.”[The injury was] something new. Haven’t done an injury like this before. I guess when something like that happens so close to a world event, your mind starts to drift towards that. With the limited time we had, I guess sitting down and working out the fastest recovery time, and the route back was to chuck some screws in it and a plate and hope for the best. Everyone I’ve dealt with and the process has been brilliant to get me to this stage. So fingers crossed we can carry on the recovery process and be right in time.”The three World Cups that Southee has played have all been impressive for New Zealand. In 2011, they were the only non-Asian team in the semi-finals, in 2015 they made it to the final but lost, in 2019 they made it to the final, didn’t lose the match but lost the title on a boundary count back.As they hope they can go one step further, the core of the team – injured and bruising right at this moment – might even get a bit emotional looking back at the joys and heartbreak of these campaigns undertaken together. Kane Williamson and Trent Boult have lived the heartbreak of 2015 and 2019 with Southee alongside some sweet memories, including the inaugural World Test Championship final.”Obviously two very good mates and guys I’ve played a lot of cricket with. Not only for New Zealand, but going back through age-group cricket, domestically for Northern Districts as well,” Southee said. “So I think also two of our greatest, greatest players to have played the game. So it’s been a special, I guess 10-12…how many [ever] years it’s been, to play alongside those guys and see [them] grow from kids into two of New Zealand’s greats.”

Amorim must now axe 5/10 Man Utd dud who lost the ball every 3 touches

On the balance of play, a 1-1 draw was a fair final outcome on Sunday evening as Manchester United and Arsenal both had their moments in the Premier League contest.

The visitors were ultimately punished in the first half for their lack of bite when Bruno Fernandes beautifully put away a free-kick in added-on time, whilst Declan Rice made sure the Red Devils would rue their own missed opportunities in the second 45 minutes when the ex-West Ham United titan powered home an equaliser.

Ruben Amorim would have lots of positives to hang onto at the full-time whistle despite the points being shared, with Fernandes sticking out once more as an obvious top performer for his underachieving team.

Man United's best performers vs Arsenal

Fernandes once again lit up Old Trafford with a terrific attacking display, with the free-kick effort sailing past David Raya for his sixth strike of the unfolding Premier League season.

With seven assists also next to his name, it’s clear that the 30-year-old is a key individual that Amorim relies on, especially when Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund are misfiring.

Whilst both Zirkzee and Hojlund failed to impress once more in an attacking capacity – the latter notably messing up a huge late chance to win the game as he was tackled by Rice – the likes of Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot very much did impress.

Indeed, the Moroccan wing-back notching up three key passes come full-time, whilst his left-sided counterpart would create one big chance himself away from valiantly defending.

But, whilst there were glimmers of hope on display to suggest United can push up the league away from an unsatisfactory 14th spot, there were other stale performances on show as this experienced Red Devils head struggled to ever get going against the Gunners.

Man United's worst performer against Arsenal

Fernandes has definitely cemented himself as a regular starter, but it’s his attacking midfield teammate Christian Eriksen who will worry for his spot in Amorim’s XIs moving forward, having put in a rather forgettable performance against Mikel Arteta’s opponents.

Indeed, the number 14 failed to attempt a single dribble all match as a timid performer partnering the classy Fernandes, alongside also never testing Raya with a single effort on goal. To make matter worse, he also had fewer touches than Andre Onana (53).

It was a weak display from the ageing Dane in every department, with seven of his 25 passes going astray, leading to possession being given up 11 times, once every three touches.

Moreover, it could be argued that his inability to get stuck in – which saw him just one duel all game – cost his team dear when Rice struck home his fierce effort, with Eriksen the closest man to the England international but doing very little to stop him levelling proceedings.

He could find his starting spot taken up by someone fresher in games to come consequently, with Gary Neville calling for the United squad to be “ripped up” in the near future, and Eriksen is just one face who might well be moved on as his contract expires this summer.

Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst handed out a poor 5/10 rating to Eriksen after the game, stating that he did “very little” when the ball was at his feet, which is in-keeping with his lacklustre season to date with just one assist coming his way in the league.

Whilst certain individuals continue to show they deserve to stick it out for the foreseeable at Old Trafford, others look very close to the exit door, with Eriksen very much deep now in that unwanted group.

Australia's rout of West Indies overshadowed by controversial umpiring

A clinical bowling performance led by Kim Garth, Annabel Sutherland and Alana King helped Australia romp to a dominant eight-wicket win over West Indies and a 2-0 ODI series triumph. But their victory at Junction Oval was slightly overshadowed by two controversial TV umpiring decisions.Sutherland claimed three wickets, while Garth, King and Tahlia McGrath picked up two each as West Indies were bowled out for just 103 inside 31.4 overs after being sent into bat. Then a 57-run opening stand at better than a run-a-ball between Phoebe Litchfield and Alyssa Healy laid the foundation for a comfortable chase with Ellyse Perry and Beth Mooney finishing the job untroubled with 34.3 overs to spare. The only concern for Australia came when Ashleigh Gardner copped a blow on the thumb in the field, which required an x-ray, but she was cleared of any damage.West Indies were thoroughly outclassed by Australia but controversial decisions from TV umpire Claire Polosak did them no favours, although it is highly unlikely they had a significant impact on the result.West Indies were 38 for 2 in the 12th over, after Garth had struck twice early including the big wicket of skipper Hayley Matthews for 23, when the first of two decisions went against them. Stafanie Taylor chipped a return catch back to Sutherland, which dipped at the bowler’s feet in her follow-through. Sutherland did very well to get her right hand down but the ball appeared to wedge in her fingers after brushing the ground first. However, Polosak took a long look at various slow-motion replays and was satisfied that Sutherland had got her fingers under the ball to complete the catch cleanly and Taylor was given out.Annabel Sutherland took a controversial sharp, low return catch to send back Stafanie Taylor•Getty Images

Two balls later, in the next over from King, Polosak was called on again. This time, Shemaine Campbelle had been given out lbw by onfield umpire Eloise Sheridan and she immediately reviewed the decision. Campbelle was trying to defend King on the front foot with her bat and front pad very close together. Again, Polosak needed a long look at the slow-motion replays to determine whether Campbelle had hit the ball before it struck the pad. It looked clear that the ball had deflected off the bat as there was evidence both on UltraEdge and on the replay to show the ball deviating. But Polosak determined that the ball touched the front pad first before hitting the inside edge and then deflected. After deeming it hit the pad first, ball tracking showed three reds, with the ball smashing middle stump well under bail height. The decision caused Matthews to walk out of the team dugout and voice her frustration to the fourth umpire on the boundary edge.West Indies coach Shane Deitz was interviewed by broadcaster Channel Seven shortly after. He said he believed Taylor’s catch did not carry but he was measured in his analysis of the lbw decision.”[It] definitely looked like there was some bat and deviation from bat into the pad, but it’s hard to say,” Deitz said. “We just have to accept the decision and move on. The umpire on the side can’t do too much about it so we will just wait after the game and get clarification. But it’s out, so we just have to move on.”It left West Indies in tatters at 39 for 4 and without any reviews left after Matthews had earlier burnt one on her plumb lbw off Garth. Although they were out of reviews, they did not need them despite the next three batters also falling lbw. Chinelle Henry and Aaliyah Alleyne were both trapped plumb in front playing from the crease to straight balls from Sutherland.King continued on from where she left off on Thursday, causing West Indies batters all sorts of problems with her immaculate control. She had Rashada Williams dropped at slip by Mooney after inducing the edge with a beautiful legbreak but later trapped Shabika Gajnabi at the crease with one that skidded on straight.Captain Healy strangely opted not to continue with the destructive duo of Sutherland and King despite the pair having claimed five wickets between them, following six last Thursday, and pulled them from the attack with West Indies teetering at 80 for 7. With Gardner unavailable because of her thumb injury, Healy opted to give Georgia Wareham and McGrath a bowl instead, the latter having not bowled since the second T20I in Sydney.Wareham did pick up Williams for 25 when she skied a slog straight up in the air to leave the visitors 84 for 8. But Cherry-Ann Fraser provided some plucky resistance striking a huge six off Wareham over deep midwicket that bounced off the concourse and out of the ground on to Lakeside Drive. Karishma Ramharack struck a blow lofting McGrath over cover to find the rope but fell trying to repeat the dose holing out to Wareham, who had been placed there shortly after. Fraser was the last to fall, chipping McGrath to mid-off.The chase was a straightforward affair with Healy and Litchfield barely taking a risk while finding the boundary at will with some lovely drives and flicks. West Indies helped the Australian duo with some woeful ground fielding. Both openers fell trying to accelerate proceedings. Perry and Mooney took no such risks to see Australia home.

United suffered a disappointing defeat in the Europa League final to Tottenham on Wednesday night, leaving Garnacho frustrated with his lack of playing time. The young winger only came on in the 71st minute, which prompted a social media reaction and fueled speculation about his future at the club. Gabby Agbonlahor has now weighed in, suggesting Garnacho should seek a move away from Old Trafford after the Argentinian's brother fired a thinly-veiled shot at Red Devils manager Ruben Amorim.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Garnacho's frustration comes at a time of uncertainty for United. Without Champions League football next season, United face financial challenges and potential player sales. The club's underwhelming performance in the Europa League final has added to the pressure on Amorim and questions are being asked about his ability to rebuild the team. This environment could make it difficult for Garnacho to thrive and get the opportunities he desires and former Aston Villa striker Agbonlahor admitted he would be looking to leave Old Trafford if he was in the youngster's shoes.

  • WHAT AGBONLAHOR SAID

Speaking on talkSPORT, Agbonlahor said: "Garnacho last night, by the way, not happy. He only played 19 minutes. It's on social media. In a press conference afterwards. Is he the guy you want to keep on side or do you need that attitude out of Manchester United? No, I don't blame him. And if I'm Garnacho this morning, I'm on the phone to my agent even last night. Get me out of here."

WHAT NEXT FOR GARNACHO AND MAN UTD?

Garnacho will likely discuss his options with his agent in the coming weeks. United will need to address his concerns and decide whether they can offer him the playing time he desires, while manager Amorim will need to focus on rebuilding the squad without the financial boost of Champions League football and decisions will need to be made on player sales.

As you can see in the table above, all three of those players have been average, or poor, in front of goal considering the quality of chances that the team have created for them.

They have all, also, failed to hit double figures for goals in the division by this point, with Salah sitting on a whopping 18 goals ahead of anyone else in the squad.

Their respective struggles at the top end of the pitch this season may be why Liverpool have been linked with a move for Argentine forward Julian Alvarez.

The latest on Liverpool's interest in Julian Alvarez

Former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown has revealed that Liverpool have “looked” at the former Manchester City number nine ahead of the summer transfer window.

alvarez-atletico-madrid

Speaking to Football Insider, the scout explained that the Reds want to bolster their options at the top end of the pitch but the Atletico Madrid man may not be a viable option.

Brown said: “I’ve heard talk about a potential move to Liverpool, but just a year after he left City I’m not convinced that one’s likely to happen. I think he’s one they’ve looked at to see whether he might be an option, but it’s not gone any further.

“He’s settled and happy where he is at the moment, I don’t think he’s looking to move. Plus, Atletico Madrid are not going to want to sell, it would have to be a huge deal.”

Atletico Madrid'sJulianAlvarezscores a penalty during the penalty shootout wich is later disallowed after a VAR review

He added: “Liverpool do want to strengthen up front, but they’ll have to look elsewhere.”

These comments suggest that Michael Edwards will not be able to strike a deal for the 2022 World Cup winner when the summer transfer window opens, which is a shame when you consider the kind of quality that he could provide at Anfield.

How Julian Alvarez could improve Liverpool's team

The 25-year-old sensation’s performances for Atletico Madrid across all competitions this season suggest that he has the ability to come in and solve Slot’s problems in the number nine position.

Alvarez, who scored 17 goals for Manchester City in the 2022/23 campaign, has racked up 23 goals and five assists in 44 appearances in all competitions for the Spanish giants this term.

He has proven himself to be a ruthless forward who can make a big impact in the final third in both LaLiga and the Champions League for Diego Simeone’s side, thanks to his lethal finishing when chances come his way.

As you can see in the table above, Alvarez has outperformed his xG, by some distance, across both competitions and rarely passed up a ‘big chance’ to find the back of the net.

These statistics suggest that the Argentina international is the kind of centre-forward that Slot has been missing from his Liverpool squad in the Premier League in the current campaign.

The Dutch manager, however, may have his own version of Alvarez brewing at Anfield in the form of young marksman Jayden Danns, who is currently out on loan at Sunderland.

Why Jayden Danns could make the breakthrough at Liverpool

The England U18 international signed for the Championship side on loan in the January transfer window but has yet to make an appearance for the Black Cats due to a back issue.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

Danns, despite not having any estimated return date yet, is expected to play a part in their promotion push before the end of the season, though, and that could give him an opportunity to impress Slot before pre-season.

Liverpool forward Jayden Danns

The 19-year-old starlet has, already, shown plenty of promise at youth and senior level in his career so far, however, as he has made nine appearances for Liverpool’s first-team.

Danns has scored three goals in his nine matches for the senior side, scoring two goals against Southampton and one against Accrington Stanley.

As you can see in the clip above, the teenage sensation showed fantastic movement and composure in front of goal to score an excellent goal against the Saints last term.

Danns was once described as “unplayable” by U23 scout Antonio Mango and analyst Ben Mattinson claimed that the striker is “a better finisher than (Darwin) Nunez”, which shows that he has caught the eye of unbiased onlookers.

As you can see in the table above, the Liverpool youngster has already shown a clinical and ruthless edge at academy level with his goalscoring exploits in the U18 Premier League and the FA Youth Cup.

It is now down to him to show that he can translate those performances over to the senior versions of those competitions, in the Premier League and the Champions League specifically.

Jayden Danns scores for Liverpool.

His return of three goals in two FA Cup matches for the first-team is a promising sign and shows that he does have the ability to make an impact against senior teams, with his aforementioned goal against Southampton showcasing his composure and quality in front of goal.

It is now down to him to return from injury and enjoy a strong end to the campaign with Sunderland to prove to Slot that he is ready to return to Anfield to compete for a place in the squad next season.

Slot can bin Nunez & Jota by unleashing Liverpool star who's barely played

Liverpool can move on from Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota by unleashing this star.

ByDan Emery Mar 23, 2025

If he can do that then Edwards can forget all about Alvarez and the club’s unlikely pursuit of the Atletico star as Liverpool could have their own version of the clinical number nine in Danns, who seemingly has the potential to be the consistent scorer that the Reds have lacked in that position this season.

BPL week two: All-round Nawaz propels unbeaten Khulna; Sylhet remain winless

Oman’s Bilal Khan turned out to be Chattogram’s unlikely hero, even as Barishal’s Shoaib Mailk abruptly left the BPL

Mohammad Isam31-Jan-2024While table-toppers Khulna followed up two wins from the last week with two more in this one, Chattogram Challengers were in good form too, having now won three matches in a row to sit just below Khulna. Rangpur Riders also bounced back from a defeat at the start of the week with two important wins.Led by Anamul Haque – and with a heavy West Indies contingent – Khulna beat Rangpur by 28 runs before thumping Durdanto Dhaka by ten wickets in a 131-run chase, which they completed with more than five overs to spare. Allrounder Mohammad Nawaz starred for Khulna in both games. While he smashed 55 off 34 balls and took two wickets against Rangpur, he took 3 for 15 against Dhaka. Apart from Nawaz, Khulna have also been boosted by the consistency of Anamul and Evin Lewis.Related

Chattogram, meanwhile, also won both games this week. While they just inched past Fortune Barishal by ten runs while defending 193, they dominated Sylhet by chasing down 138 with eight wickets and 14 balls in the bank. Finalists last season, that was Sylhet’s fifth loss in a row. Either side of losing to Chattogram, they also suffered heavy defeats to Comilla Victorians and Barishal. The injured Mashrafe Mortaza might have been part of the reason for Sylhet’s poor run, as he played for and captained the side despite not bowling regularly. Mashrafe has since decided to take a break from the tournament to focus on his political work. He had earlier admitted that it was “not ideal” that he was still in the side. The change of venue from Mirpur in the first week to Sylhet in the second might have been a factor in there being a majority of wins for sides batting first – all eight games in Mirpur were won by the chasing side – as dew apparently became less of an issue at the picturesque Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.Babar Azam has two half-centuries in the BPL so far this season•Raton Gomes/BCB

Meanwhile, there was a nagging off-field debate surrounding Barishal’s Pakistan allrounder Shoaib Malik. In the previous week, Barishal owner Mizanur Rahman wasn’t pleased with Malik bowling as many as three no-balls in an over against Khulna, claiming “that’s where we lost that match”, as Khulna chased down 188 rather comfortably.Soon after, on January 26, Mailk abruptly left the BPL after playing only three games, although as per Mizanur, Malik’s contract ran “till February 14”. That led to rumours about a rift within the team, though Malik later said that it was not the case.

Batter of the week

Rangpur’s Babar Azam struck his second fifty of this season’s BPL when he made 62 off 46 balls in a match-winning effort against Dhaka. He followed it up with a better-than-a-run-a-ball 37 against Comilla, again Rangpur’s highest score in their eight-run win. While Babar doesn’t entirely dominate bowling attacks with a flurry of boundaries, he remains steady while building crucial partnerships. For instance, against Dhaka he added 50 with Nurul Hasan after Rangpur had lost two wickets in the powerplay, before having a union of 55 for the second wicket with Fazle Mahmud against Comilla.

Bowler of the week

Someone in the top six of the all-time ODI bowling averages with a minimum of 50 wickets slipped into the BPL without notice. Bilal Khan hails from Oman – he is one of their stars. And the left-arm quick has been effective for Chattogram too, picking up eight wickets at 18.25 to currently top the bowling charts in the BPL. That included a haul of 3 of 24 against Sylhet, for which he was given the Player-of-the-Match award.

Liverpool's 2025 summer transfer priorities: Reunite Florian Wirtz with Jeremie Frimpong at Anfield as soon as possible – but ditch Darwin Nunez

The Reds may have romped to the 2024-25 Premier League title, but it's already clear that they're going to be very busy in the market

Liverpool boss Arne Slot did something truly remarkable last season. He made replacing the iconic Jurgen Klopp look easy, as the former Feyenoord coach led the Reds to Premier League glory. Perhaps even more impressively, he did so with just one new player in Federico Chiesa – and even then, the Dutchman barely used the Italian attacker.

It's, therefore, exciting to think what Slot might achieve with a significantly strengthened squad because it's already clear that Richard Hughes & Co. mean business this summer. After last year's infuriating inactivity (even in terms of tying Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold down to new contracts), the Reds are now seemingly intent on doing as much business as possible before the end of June.

Indeed, a deal for Jeremie Frimpong has already been completed, which has really taken the edge off Alexander-Arnold's departure for Real Madrid, and it seems that more world-class reinforcements are on the way.

GOAL runs through all of the areas the champions still need to strengthen, and who's likely to make way for the new arrivals…

Getty Images SportWrap up Wirtz deal ASAP!

Dominik Szoboszlai played a key part in Liverpool's 2024-25 title triumph, with his relentless running proving integral to Slot's pressing game. The Hungary international also stepped up in massive wins over Manchester City and Newcastle in February. However, 16 direct goal involvements was considered a slightly underwhelming return for a player who was regularly deployed just behind Liverpool's front three.

Consequently, the club's fans went into meltdown when it suddenly emerged that Liverpool were leading the race to sign Florian Wirtz, arguably the most exciting and effective No.10 in the game today.

Once it emerged that the Germany international was open to leaving Bayer Leverkusen, the natural assumption was that he would join Bayern Munich, who have always revelled in hoovering up all of the Bundesliga's top young talent. Wirtz, though, apparently has his heart set on a move to Merseyside, and Leverkusen are obviously far more open to selling their most valuable asset to Liverpool rather than the team that dethroned them as champions of Germany.

Bayer are understandably playing hardball, holding out for a fee in the region of £125 million ($170m), but, according to the latest reports, a British-record deal is close to being agreed. Until the official confirmation arrives, though, Liverpool fans won't rest easy, particularly as former Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso has just taken over at Real Madrid.

Wirtz wouldn't just be a statement signing; he'd be a game-changer, and likely to be worth every single penny. After all, the Germany international has only just turned 22 while only Salah (36) has racked up more assists than Wirtz (33) in Europe's 'Big Five' leagues over the past two years. Just imagine the damage they could do together in the Premier League – particularly with Frimpong supporting them!

AdvertisementGetty Images SportLine up a Robertson replacement

It was fantastic to see Andy Robertson collect the second Premier League winners' medal he so richly deserved, as it should remove any question mark over his status as one of the competition's best-ever left-backs. However, there's simply no getting away from the fact that the 2024-25 campaign underlined that Robertson is in decline, which is perfectly understandable for a 31-year-old.

Playing full-throttle football for so many seasons was always going to catch up with him eventually, as underlined by a solitary assist in 33 Premier League appearances. Even more worryingly, Robertson was, at times, a liability from a defensive perspective, most notably in Liverpool's two games against Fulham, when he was made to look very bad indeed by Antonee Robinson, a player long touted as his Anfield heir.

Hughes, though, has another successor in mind, namely Milos Kerkez, and signing the Bournemouth ace certainly makes an awful lot of sense. The Hungary international is still only 21 years of age (Robinson is 27) and showed this season that he can provide the kind of penetration down the left flank that was once Robertson's forte.

Kerkez has previously been linked with Manchester City, so he won't come cheap – Bournemouth are believed to be demanding approximately £45m ($61m) – but the word is that he, too, is desperate to join Liverpool, meaning Slot should have a Robertson replacement sooner rather than later.

GettySign a striker

Liverpool need to sign a striker this summer because, right now, they don't have one they can rely on. It really is as simple as that, because Diogo Jota can't stay fit, while Darwin Nunez can't convert open goals.

How much an interested party would be willing to pay for the Portuguese is unclear at this stage, given his injury record. Remarkable as it may seem, though, there are apparently a few clubs willing to pay a reasonable sum of money for Nunez. It's been claimed that Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone believes himself capable of getting the best out of the painfully unpredictable Uruguayan and Liverpool would certainly be open to sending Nunez to the Metropolitano if it would help to convince the Rojiblancos to let Julian Alvarez move in the opposite direction.

At this particular point in time, though, it seems far more likely that a Saudi Arabian club would be willing to pay over the odds for Nunez, given there was already interest in doing so during the January transfer window. Wherever Nunez goes (and he will depart this summer), the money raised from his sale will undoubtedly be put towards acquiring a promising young centre-forward.

With Champions League-qualified Newcastle having priced Liverpool (and pretty much everyone else) out of the running for Alexander Isak, and Arsenal seemingly closing in on Benjamin Sesko, Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike is looking like the preferred candidate to lead the attack next season – although it is worth noting that the Reds are going to face stiff competition for the Frenchman's services from Chelsea. Again, the fee could well be prohibitive but given the scarcity of No.9s on the market right now, it might be a price worth paying from Liverpool's perspective.

However, it will be well worth keeping an eye on any developments surrounding Victor Osimhen. The Nigeria international no longer seems to be on the radar of Europe's elite and appears to be edging towards the Saudi Pro League, but the buy-out clause in his Napoli contract is €75m (£63m/$84m) – which actually seems pretty reasonable for such a proven and well-rounded goal-scorer…

Getty Images SportSort out Konate's future

Ibrahima Konate represents quite the conundrum for Liverpool. The France international clearly has it in him to become a truly world-class defender; he's big, strong, quick and his centre-back partnership with Virgil van Dijk was arguably the best in the Premier League last season.

However, Konate's Anfield future is far from certain for two reasons: firstly, he's worryingly error-prone; secondly, and far more importantly, he's got just one year left on his contract.

Konate may not be anywhere near as valuable as Alexander-Arnold, but Liverpool would still be loath to lose the 26-year-old for nothing at the end of next season. Hughes & Co., thus, have a big decision to make on Konate.

If it looks like he is even considering following in Alexander-Arnold's footsteps by running down his contract in order to secure a move to Real Madrid (or maybe even Paris Saint-Germain), Liverpool should cash in on Konate immediately. It would hardly be the ideal outcome, of course. It's not like the Reds are well-stacked in the centre of defence as it is, with Jarell Quansah having gone backwards over the past year and the frustratingly brittle Joe Gomez only just back from a season-ending injury.

We're also still waiting for the long-awaited arrival of a young, left-side centre-back to eventually take over from Van Dijk. Indeed, Liverpool really need to strengthen the heart of their defence this summer – even if they keep Konate.
