Tottenham now eyeing late move for "very strong" ace who Brighton bid for

Tottenham Hotspur are now eyeing a potential late move to sign another exciting talent for Ange Postecoglou in the dying hours of the January transfer window.

Tottenham trust in youth

Despite an awful Premier League campaign to date, one bright spark has been the young talent on show in north London.

Perhaps as much by necessity as by choice, Postecoglou has handed significant opportunities to summer arrivals Lucas Bergvall (19) and Archie Gray (18) alongside academy talents Will Lankshear and Mikey Moore when fit.

Tottenham also make £3m+ offer to sign "powerful" young winger after Danso

In addition to that, the club have placed their faith in young goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky this month after he arrived from Slavia Prague, while the signing of Wilson Odobert over the summer demonstrated further the north London side’s aims to sign talented youngsters rather than established stars going forwards.

To do this, they have used the Championship to good effect, with Lankshear joining Ashley Phillips and January addition Yang Min-hyeok on loan in England’s second tier, while both Gray and Odobert were signed from clubs currently in the Championship after impressing, in Gray’s case, a level below the Premier League.

Elsewhere, Luka Vuskovic is another young talent that Tottenham have lured to north London and he is currently enjoying a fine season on loan with Westerloo, before officially joining Tottenham from Croatian side Hajduk Split in the upcoming summer window.

Now, they are looking to continue that trend by plucking a young talent out of the Championship once more, with a potential 11th-hour bid to sign them now being mooted.

Tottenham want "very strong" Championship forward

That is according to a fresh report from The Boot Room, who report that Spurs have joined the race to sign exciting Sunderland winger Tom Watson, who is heading into the final 18 months of his contract at the Stadium of Light.

The 18-year-old forward has impressed in his first season of senior football, appearing 10 times for the Black Cats and grabbing two goals in that time, while he has earned the praise of manager Regis Le Bris.

“He works well. The system is well-designed for him. We can use him very quickly and play to his main strengths”, the Sunderland boss explained after he scored against Stoke in December.

“He’s powerful, he can dribble, he can move inside and outside and he scored. He’s very strong, a very good winger in this league.”

Brighton have already had a bid worth a reported £2m turned down to sign the teenager, who Sunderland are still hoping to tie to fresh terms. However, the report suggests that there is now added Premier League interest with Crystal Palace, Everton and Tottenham all keeping tabs on the winger.

Indeed, Spurs are eyeing a potential late move with the Lilywhites “looking to make more additions” before the transfer window closes.

It is claimed that “one option for an interested party could be to sign him and allow him to remain on loan at Sunderland until the summer”, something that Tottenham have already done to good effect with both Bergvall and Vuskovic in the past. Could they repeat the trick with Watson?

Dele’s journey at Tottenham began with immense promise, having joined the North London side for £5 million from MK Dons. During his early years, he played a pivotal role in Spurs' push for the title and Champions League campaigns, dazzling fans with his goals and flair.

However, injuries, dips in form, and struggles off the pitch eventually disrupted his trajectory. After falling out of favour, he made a move to Everton, hoping to reignite his career. Unfortunately, regular minutes proved hard to come by at Goodison Park, and his career continued to stall.

Despite no longer playing for the North London outfit, the 29-year-old was serenaded by chants of “We've wegot Dele Alli,” reminding everyone of the deep connection he still shares with the Spurs faithful. Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), he responded to the tribute by quoting a fan’s video of the chants, adding heart and tears in eyes emojis — a sign of his appreciation and emotional connection with the supporters.

Currently, Dele plies his trade in Italy with Serie A side Como. The team currently sits mid-table in the Italian top division, occupying 11th place as the season nears its conclusion.

Meanwhile, back in North London, Tottenham’s current crop of players are chasing European silverware. Under the guidance of Ange Postecoglou, the team earned a strong 3-1 win in the first leg of their semi-final against Bodo/Glimt. The performance was one of the few bright spots in what has otherwise been an inconsistent and disappointing domestic campaign. Securing a place in the Europa League final would offer a welcome silver lining for Spurs supporters, who are eager to see their club reclaim a prominent place among Europe’s elite.

Better than Nkunku: Man Utd plot move for £18m "future Ballon d’Or winner"

Having done a whip round and searched behind the sofa, cash-strapped Manchester United have seemingly cobbled together the funds to finally make the first senior signing of the Ruben Amorim era, with Lecce’s Patrick Dorgu all but confirmed as the latest arrival at Old Trafford.

Still just 20 – having only made his senior debut for the Italian side back in 2023 – the promising Dane is likely to be far from the finished article, albeit while offering a “super high potential” talent, as hailed by analyst Ben Mattinson, who can look to make an impact for years to come.

The key benefit of bringing in the £30m youngster from Serie A is his ability to feature on either flank in a wing-back role, as well as in a more advanced attacking berth, thus helping to plug the gap following the ‘loss’ of Antony to Real Betis, as well as Marcus Rashford’s continued exile.

Having reportedly grown “frustrated” by the club’s lack of transfer activity so far this month, Amorim will no doubt be thankful that at least one new face is set to arrive through the door, although as the manager of the self-proclaimed ‘worst Man United team in history’, the 40-year-old is in desperate need of further reinforcements if a proper rebuild is to truly begin.

Quite whether the funds are available to make such moves is another matter entirely, although that has reportedly not stopped United from keeping an eye on potential targets, as the deadline approaches.

Man Utd transfer latest

Amid the situation involving Rashford – and with Alejandro Garnacho’s future still up in the air following links to both Napoli and Chelsea – it would appear folly not to strengthen the forward line over the coming days, particularly amid the woes of Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund, who have scored just five Premier League goals between them.

Transfer Focus

With that in mind, speculation is rife that the Red Devils have made some admiring glances towards Blues star, Christopher Nkunku, with the hope of potentially making a late loan swoop for the in-demand Frenchman.

That said, INEOS may also be looking at one of Nkunku’s compatriots who could also re-energise the forward line, with Caught Offside claiming that United could be involved in a transfer tug-of-war with Liverpool for Lyon’s Rayan Cherki.

Rayan Cherki in action for Lyon

The report suggests that both top-flight clubs have enquired about signing the 21-year-old, most likely in the summer, albeit with the playmaker potentially available for as little as €22m (£18m) this month. The race is on.

How Cherki compares to Nkunku

For those not too familiar with Cherki’s work, this boy can certainly play, that’s for sure.

Long tipped to be the next Karim Benzema, amid that Lyon-France connection, the dazzling talent looks set to be a real star of both the present and future, having been lauded as a player with “Ballon d’Or potential” by man in the know, Mattinson. One expert has even gone further, tipping him to be “a future Ballon d’Or winner”.

Capable of operating on the flanks or in a central attacking midfield role, Cherki could represent the perfect option in one of Amorim’s two number ten berths, providing stern competition to the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo at Old Trafford.

In 24 games in all competitions this season, the France youth international boasts 13 goals and assists thus far, taking his total tally to 55 goal involvements in 165 games for his current side to date.

That recent record does include just three goals and three assists in 15 Ligue 1 games, although that return is far ahead of the under-used Nkunku, who has just two goals and one assist in 19 Premier League outings in 2024/25.

Equally, as shown in the table above, Cherki comes out on top in a string of attacking metrics across the last two league campaigns, offering a far more creative and dynamic outlet, as showcased by his superior record with regard to progressive passes and carries, successful take-ons (dribbles) and shot-creating actions.

Nkunku, as is indicated, is an elite goal scorer, but Cherki could represent the far more gifted all-rounder.

With doubts also there regarding Nkunku’s fitness woes, having missed the majority of last term with injury, plumping for the younger man on the cheap would be a wise approach, be it this month or the summer.

Described as a “generational talent” by journalist Andres Onrubia Ramos, Cherki – who United seemingly missed out on back in 2019 – could prove another exciting young addition for the INEOS regime and an even better signing than Nkunku to boot.

Liverpool now pushing for "outstanding" £30k-a-week Gravenberch alternative

Liverpool are believed to have made contact with a Premier League club over the availability of an “outstanding” player in January, according to journalist Rudy Galetti.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds continue to be linked with new signings, whether that be this month or the summer transfer window, and Napoli stars Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia have both been mentioned as options. The Nigerian is on loan at Galatasaray currently, but a permanent move away from the Serie A giants is on the cards for both players if they cannot find a way to extend their contracts.

Another report has claimed that Liverpool have submitted an offer for Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, having been backed to sign him in 2022, prior to him opting to join the La Liga giants instead.

Real Madrid's AurelienTchouameniin action with Pachuca's Bryan Gonzalez

The Reds are thought to be plotting a move for Bayern Munich ace Joshua Kimmich, too, with the German now into the final six months of his contract there. He is able to sign a pre-contract agreement elsewhere this month, but could seal a move away in the coming weeks, in order for his club to avoid losing him on a free transfer.

There are also players who could leave Liverpool in the near future, one of whom is youngster Ben Doak, with the winger out on loan at Middlesbrough this season. The club need to weigh up if they see him as a big part of their future or want to cash in on him.

Liverpool make contact with club over "outstanding" midfielder

According to Galetti on X, Liverpool have “asked” for fresh information on Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes, as have a number of other Premier League clubs.

The Reds may be well-stocked in midfield currently, but signing a true defence-minded option in that role could be ideal, giving the squad even more balance moving forward and offering an alternative to the smoothness of Ryan Gravenberch.

In the £30,000-a-month Gomes, Liverpool could have the perfect option there, with Danny Murphy lauding him and Mario Lemina’s relationship in the middle of the park last year: “The defensive work in central midfield is something that goes unnoticed sometimes, but you can’t win matches in the Premier League unless your midfielders do the hard yards and the dirty bits and they did it brilliantly. The pair of them, outstanding.”

At 23, Gomes is also a young player who should only continue to develop as he gets older, becoming even more mature and polished sitting in front of the defence.

All eyes are now on whether Postecoglou can resurrect Tottenham’s form with this influx of returning first-team stars, but if their form doesn’t pick up quickly, the 59-year-old will face more calls for his resignation.

According to some reports, Spurs are doing their due-diligence on possible managerial candidates for the future.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank would be a top target to replace Postecoglou (TEAMtalk), while the Italian media have reported that Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi has admirers within Tottenham as well.

Former Borussia Dortmund boss Edin Terzić, who guided the Bundesliga side to an unexpected Champions League final last term, is also thought to be among the potential contenders to succeed Postecoglou (TEAMtalk).

Another name who’s believed to be high on Spurs’ shortlist is Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola.

The Spaniard has marked himself out as a standout candidate amid his stellar job at the Vitality Stadium, leading the Cherries to seventh as they push for a Champions League place, which is all the more impressive considering their own injury problems right now.

Andoni Iraola stalls talks over new Bournemouth deal as Tottenham linger

As per The Boot Room and journalist Graeme Bailey, Spurs have been given some hope in regard to Iraola’s availability.

It is believed that Iraola has told Bournemouth he doesn’t wish to open new contract talks right now, coming as Tottenham express an interest in him as one of the possible names to succeed Postecoglou.

The north Londoners sniffing around Iraola is said to be privately worrying Bournemouth officials, even if they’re confident he’ll eventually stay, with Man City considering him to replace Pep Guardiola before the manager put pen to paper on a new deal.

Liverpool also apparently had Iraola on their list of candidates when they were hunting for Jürgen Klopp’s heir, so he is a tactician who’s very highly-rated by elite Premier League sides.

Former City defender Nedum Onuoha, speaking on the BBC’s Planet Premier League podcast, is among the pundits who’ve heralded Iraola’s “incredibly impressive” work on the south coast.

Slot endured a remarkable journey as Liverpool boss in his maiden season in England as the Reds became the English champions for a record equalling 20th time after beating Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 at Anfield last week. The Dutch manager is now looking forward to a well-deserved break in the summer, while clubs like Chelsea and Manchester City will head to the US to participate in the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup.

Slot cherished the idea that his players would get a break the entire summer before they prepare for their defending campaign next year. In comparison, the Blues and the City stars will see their holidays cut short due to participation in the new competition. The Dutchmen, however, wished Pep Guardiola and his team luck before they head to America next month.

WHAT ARNE SLOT SAID

Speaking to reporters, Slot said: "In this moment, eight out of ten people who work in this business – maybe even ten out of ten – will feel is it really necessary to have another tournament for these players that already had such a long season. I don't think it's healthy for players to only have maybe one week off, then go into the tournament, then have one week off and start the whole Premier League season again. That can never be good for the health of a player."

Guardiola had earlier criticised the packed schedule, which is taking a toll on the players' fitness, and Slot has now backed the Spanish coach's statement. The Reds boss added: "I think that is probably what most of us feel. Maybe when the tournament has been played or done well, we’ll all feel we would love to have been there, because what a great occasion. But now we have our opinion, and I think most people in football have the same opinion, pfft, another tournament. We have to wait and see what it means for the long-term for these teams, hardly having any days off."

'I preferred winning four-day games to T20'

Justin Kemp, who called time on a two-decade-long career at the end of the last season, looks back at his playing days

Interview by Firdose Moonda18-May-2016What prompted your decision to retire?

I just wasn’t playing much cricket for Cobras anymore, and this past season, when I was due to play quite a big role in the 20-over competition, I got pneumonia and it meant I only played in two of the matches. By the time I recovered, the season was over. For the franchise, it just doesn’t make sense to keep picking a 38-year-old anymore, and I knew I would have been keeping other guys out of the side. I had a long career and played for a long time, so I am happy with that decision. You’re leaving Cobras in something of a state of limbo. They didn’t win a trophy at all last season, which is rare for them. What’s going on?

The Cobras have a fantastic bunch of players and a lot of guys with international experience – Stiaan van Zyl, Dane Vilas and Dane Piedt. The challenge is keeping the team together and the guys grounded. Cape Town is such a cosmopolitan city and we live a really good life there, so it can be hard to have guys always on the same page. It can almost become a case of, if you win for a while, you take your foot off the gas. You forget that other teams improve, they come after you. So do you think if you moved the whole team to Bloemfontein, for example, where there is a bit less going on, it could spark some success?

() You said it!

“The challenge at Cobras keeping the team together and the guys grounded. Cape Town is such a cosmopolitan city and we live a really good life there, so it can be hard to have guys always on the same page”

On a serious note, this season has also seen the likes of Neil McKenzie and Jacques Rudolph call it a day. Do you think South African franchise cricket is at risk of losing too many experienced players?

It’s a fine line, because I am not sure you can have guys playing until they are 45. On the other side of that argument, senior players are very important in a team, but you need to make sure they are contributing. If they’re still enjoying it and adding value, then they must keep going but not at the expense of keeping a talented 24-year-old out of the team.Let’s go back to your childhood. Your grandfather and father were both first-class cricketers. Would you say the game was in your blood?

Absolutely. I grew up watching my grandfather and my father, and I knew I wanted to play. I was a boarder at Queens College from the age of five, and from then, I played cricket. I had a huge love for the game but it was only when I got picked for the South African Under-19 side that I believed I could actually do something with cricket and I tried to.You were part of the set-up for more than two decades. How much did things change in that time?

The professionalism got better. I think two or three seasons ago South Africa had its golden period with Graeme Smith’s team, and that was all a result of what was happening at lower levels. When I first started, there were very old-school philosophies about how as a youngster you were really a junior, you had to earn your stripes and prove yourself. Back then you needed to have two to three really good seasons before you could say you were knocking on the door of the national side. Now you might only need to have two or three good games. Things change.Especially in 20-over teams. You were one of the first T20 freelancers, so to speak. Tell me about about the ICL [Indian Cricket League].
We were given clear mandates that we would be playing some cricket and making some money. It was money I never dreamed of. Of course I thought it was a chance to get ahead. Sportsmen’s careers are short. We didn’t go there to murder anyone. The first season was not on as grand a scale as the IPL was. But it was a good bunch of guys. I do regret it in some ways. I stifled my career for two years, and I was probably in the best form then.Kemp on his way to his only one-day hundred, against India in Cape Town, 2006•Gianluigi Guercia/Getty Images Do you feel you maybe missed the real boom, which has come with the IPL now?
Maybe. But you know, I was never really a massive T20 player. I never really enjoyed it. Honestly, I preferred winning four-day games. Obviously with T20, there are the crowds and the atmosphere, but it all got a little lost on me.Are your career highlights mostly to do with longer-form cricket then?
Mostly. I played a fair amount of South Africa, and in most major events, which was obviously a highlight. But then I also spent five years on the county circuit. I had a year at Worcestershire and then some time at Kent, and that was a very special time for me, as well as the years I spent at the Titans and Cobras when we won a lot of trophies. The main highlight was batting all day with Jacques Rudolph to save a Test against Australia in Perth, especially because no one thought we could do it. And then a lot of four-day innings stand out. The hundred I scored for South Africa in the ODI against India is also up there but so is a hundred I scored for Kent at Lord’s. And the first four-day trophy I won with the Cobras. We went on to win about four in a row – that was really special. Sounds like you have many more batting memories than bowling ones?

I suppose so. Bowling-wise there were those times when I took five wickets but it’s the batting that stands out. Did you enjoy captaining?

Very much. I was in charge for a few seasons and I really felt that it came naturally to me. I didn’t get taken in by the stresses.

“The ICL was money I never dreamed of. The first season was not on as grand a scale as the IPL was. But it was a good bunch of guys. I do regret it in some ways. I stifled my career for two years, and I was probably in the best form then”

Who were same of your favourite team-mates?

I’m going to get into trouble here! Most recently, guys like Andrew Puttick, Rory Kleinveldt and Dane Vilas. We had a very good thing going at the Cobras. And then back in the day, I was quite close to Pierre de Bruyn and Martin van Jaarsveld. And Neil McKenzie was always my room-mate on tours. And the opponents you dreaded?
Australia. Domestically, I always tended to have some big battles with the Lions. Do you have any regrets that you did not go on to play more regularly?

I guess so. I wish I had played more games for South Africa, but I am happy with what I achieved. What do you think South African cricket needs to do to get back on track?
We need to make cricket decisions. I know there is a lot going on and I don’t want to get into politics, but to be a top international team, you need to make the right decisions. Some of the ways things are handled make me wonder. Whoever is in charge should take a long hard look at what is being done and why, and really take a deep look at things, and then the record may speak for itself. In his last Test, in Perth in 2005, Kemp batted for over three and a half hours with Jacques Rudolph to secure a draw•Getty Images What does life after cricket hold?

I have always been a huge fisherman. One of the first things I remember from growing up was that I had a fishing rod in my hand. We’re very lucky to live in Cape Town, which has one of the biggest tuna-fishing environments around. Along with a friend I bought a recreational fishing boat and we are trying to make a thing to take people out to catch their own fish. We’ve also bought a fishing shop where we sell equipment to long liners and trawlers and we’ve had that for two years. I put a lot of money into it and hopefully we will start seeing some returns soon.So its business, not cricket, in the near future.

Not entirely. I am currently at a club in Belfast called CIYMA. I was offered a job to join them for four months as a player-coach, and with the rand at more than 1:20 [to the pound], it helps. My wife can work remotely and my daughters are still young. They are two and five, so we are home-schooling them for this period and taking the opportunity to show them the United Kingdom. I am working with young cricketers, mostly 15-to-18 years old and I am quite impressed by the standard of cricket in Ireland. This came really out of the blue, completely unexpected, but I am enjoying coaching. Does this mean you may consider coaching in South Africa?

I’m not sure. It might be something I look into at a later stage.

Dream Trossard replacement: Arsenal chasing "mind-blowing" £50m phenom

After just over a month of constant rumours, speculation, and deals, transfer deadline day is finally here, but so far, Arsenal’s list of incomings is entirely blank.

Mikel Arteta’s side are still just about in the Premier League title race, flying in the Champions League and could even overturn their 2-0 deficit in the League Cup on Wednesday, but to give themselves the best chance of winning anything this year, they’ll surely need to make an addition to the squad before the window slams shut tonight.

Now, the North Londoners have been trying to strengthen their squad, with concrete links to players such as RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko and Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, but to little success.

Fortunately, with just a day remaining, recent reports have strongly linked the club with one of the most exciting up-and-coming attackers in European football, a youngster who’d be the perfect replacement for the ageing Leandro Trossard.

Arsenal chasing in-demand star

According to a recent report from Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, Arsenal are one of several clubs who remain incredibly keen on Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel.

Plettenberg has revealed that, as things stand, no club has been able to reach an agreement with the German behemoths regarding the French talent and that while the Gunners are “in talks” with them, there will be “no panic sale.”

One of the major stumbling blocks for the Red Devils appears to have been the fact that Bayern wanted them to sign the 19-year-old on a permanent deal or on loan with an obligation to buy, which could potentially be an issue for the North Londoners as well, especially as the offer they accepted from Tottenham Hotspur last week stood at around £50m.

Mathys Tel

It could be a complicated and potentially costly transfer to get over the line before the end of the day, but given Tel’s immense ability and potential, it is one well worth fighting for, especially as the club need to be thinking about a Trossard replacement.

Why Tel would be a dream Trossard replacement

So, the first thing to clear up is just why Arsenal would want to sign a replacement for Leandro Trossard this month, especially as it was only last season that he racked up a tally of 19 goal involvements in 46 games.

Well, it comes down to two things. The first is that while he was exceptional last year, this season has been a different story altogether, and while still reasonably impressive, a tally of five goals and six assists in 35 games isn’t really enough for a side gunning for the title.

The second reason is that, at 30 years old, the Waterschei-born winger is far closer to the end of his career than the start, and while footballers of today can play longer than they did in the past, research carried out by The Athletic revealed that wingers peak at around 26 and experience an incredibly sharp decline in their ability to take on defenders when they reach 30.

Moreover, with reports coming out last month that little to no progress was being made on a new contract for the former Brighton & Hove Albion ace, it makes sense to start looking for a young and exciting long-term replacement, which in this case would be Tel.

Now, it is true that the Frenchman hasn’t had the best of campaigns this year, but that is almost entirely down to the fact that Vincent Kompany has barely played him, as he’s made just four starts across 14 appearances, totalling 458 minutes.

However, when you look at how effective the Sarcelles-born dynamo was last season, the clamour from other sides to secure his signature becomes far easier to understand.

For example, in just 1406 minutes across 41 appearances, the “mind-blowing” talent, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, scored ten goals and provided six assists, meaning he maintained an average of a goal involvement every 87.87 minutes, which is an awe-inspiring rate of return.

Moreover, considering that he produced those numbers despite being just 18 at the start of the campaign, it really does feel like the sky is the limit for the Bayern ace.

Ultimately, with Trossard being on the wrong side of 30 and his rate of return declining this season, it’s time Arsenal signed a proper long-term replacement for him, and based on his sensational form last season, Tel appears to be the perfect candidate.
