White: Will be 'surprised' if Boult is not in New Zealand's 2023 World Cup squad

Outgoing NZC chief says while the priority will be given to contracted players, conversations with Boult have been “very positive”

ESPNcricinfo staff11-May-2023Days after Trent Boult expressed his desire to feature in the 2023 ODI World Cup, New Zealand Cricket’s outgoing chief executive officer David White has said he will be “surprised” if the left-arm quick does not represent New Zealand in the tournament later this year.Boult was released from his central contract last August at his own request in order to spend more time with his family and increase his availability for franchise leagues around the world. However, White, who had taken NZC’s charge in 2012, said that centrally contracted players would be at the front of the selection queue.”We have made it very clear that priority is given to centrally-contracted players,” White told New Zealand radio station this week. “That was the case during the summer. It is very important for the integrity of the competition and of the contracting model that we give priority to our centrally-contracted players.”Related

  • Boult still has a 'big desire' to play ODI World Cup in India

White revealed that NZC had kept the communication open with Boult, hinting the seamer was likely to be on the flight to India for the World Cup.”In saying that, we’ve had a lot of conversations with Trent over the last few weeks and months,” White said. “I’d be very surprised if he wasn’t representing New Zealand in the World Cup, and we’re having very positive conversations with him.”Boult has not played international cricket since New Zealand’s T20 World Cup semi-final defeat to Pakistan in November 2022 and has not played a Test match in nearly a yearIn February, New Zealand’s coach Gary Stead said he had spoken to Boult ahead of the two-Test series at home against England and explained why he would not be in contention despite injuries to Matt Henry and Kyle Jamieson at the time. Even then, Stead had left Boult optimistic for future New Zealand assignments.”It does not mean we have ruled Trent out from anything in the future,” Stead had said. “There will be ongoing discussion and we’re not sure what the landscape of the cricket world will look like in six months. It might change again.”Boult, who is currently playing in the IPL for Rajasthan Royals, told ESPNcricinfo in a recent chat that he remains hopeful about playing another ODI World Cup, a desire which took seed as soon as New Zealand lost the 2019 World Cup in a heart-breaking finish. “I remember after the 2019 final, I said to Kane [Williamson] that we’ve got to be there again, come 2023 in India. One hundred percent, I’ve got that desire to be out there.”

‘Representing country still the pinnacle’

T20 leagues like the IPL offer big money and a better work-life balance, which force players to reconsider their career paths. Along with Boult, New Zealand allrounder James Neeesham too had declined a central contract, while Colin de Grandhomme retired from international cricket. But White felt a lot of present-day cricketers still preferred representing their country over playing in franchise cricket.”I think that the players still say that Test cricket and representing their country is still the pinnacle,” he said. “[With] the majority of the players, that is certainly the case. It would be fair to say that a lot of the players that are going into leagues are former [internationals], or [are] towards the end of their career. So I am not so concerned about that.”The really positive thing about cricket compared to a lot of other sports is that it’s being bankrolled primarily by India, which is now the most populated country in the world. There are huge resources and a lot of revenue, which is good for cricket. So it’s just important that New Zealand Cricket ensures that we stay relevant. That way we influence the international game at the ICC level, and we can compete at the highest level.”I think over the next year or two, there’ll be a little bit more certainty about where that goes. But the international game is strong. I think we are very well-positioned, and I’m very proud of what we have achieved over my tenure.”

Maharaj in danger of missing ODI World Cup with Achilles injury

Keshav Maharaj is in danger of missing the 2023 ODI World Cup after rupturing his left Achilles tendon while celebrating a wicket. South Africa’s lead spinner is looking at a minimum of six months out of the game and may not be able to make it to India in October when the iCC tournament is due to begin.Maharaj suffered the injury on Saturday when he took off on a run to celebrate the dismissal of West Indies’ Kyle Mayers in the second Test match in Johannesburg. He pulled up almost immediately and needed to be stretchered off the field and to a hospital. Scans taken there revealed significant damage and he is now on crutches, with a moon boot on his left leg.Maharaj has only played 27 ODIs since his debut in 2017. He has a much bigger role within the Test side as their hold-up bowler. His exploits include a taking a nine-for in Sri Lanka and given the upcoming World Cup is taking place in similar conditions, he might have had a reasonable chance of participating. In the short-term, Maharaj will not be able to join Middlesex, having signed on to play for them in the English County Championship and the T20 Blast later this year. He will turn his attention to rehab instead, much like Keegan Petersen, another long-term absentee as a result of a freakish on-field injury.South Africa waited until Maharaj was back at the Wanderers to celebrate their 284-run victory over West Indies, their final game of this World Test Championship cycle. Their next red-ball assignment is not until December 2023 against India.

Forget Kyogo: Celtic star showed why his value has soared by 100% already

da apostebet: Not even the bitterly cold conditions away at Dingwall can stop this red-hot Celtic side right now, with the Scottish champions powering to a 4-1 win over Ross County to extend their mammoth lead at the Premiership summit.

da marjack bet: January is still in its infancy, yet Brendan Rodgers’ men already look to have two hands on the title, with Saturday’s triumph ensuring the Hoops now rest 18 points above bitter rivals Rangers, following the Ibrox side’s draw away to Dundee in midweek.

Celtic managerBrendanRodgerscelebrates after winning the League Cup

It must be said, however, that it wasn’t quite plain-sailing for the Parkhead outfit against Don Cowie’s side, with Jordan White having cancelled out Kyogo Furuhashi’s opener from the spot, following a clumsy challenge from Alistair Johnston.

To their credit, as they always do, the league leaders rallied to put the game to bed late on, with Kyogo grabbing his second of the game on the 81st-minute mark, prior to Arne Engels and Luke McCowan rubbing further salt into home wounds in stoppage time.

Evidently far from a perfect performance, yet Rodgers – who was without the likes of Nicolas Kuhn and Daizen Maeda – will no doubt have been impressed by at least a handful of his star men, including Kyogo.

Kyogo's game in numbers vs Ross County

It would be foolish not to focus in on Celtic’s two-goal hero, with the Japanese marksman looking razor-sharp in something of a new role, having operated off the focal point of Adam Idah in attack.

Seemingly given the licence to drift and drop deep to get involved in the play, the 29-year-old – who has only averaged 13.7 touches per game in the league this season – chalked up 53 touches this time around, as per Sofascore, with Rodgers finding a novel solution to fill the void of Kuhn and Maeda.

Having gone close to getting off the mark initially, only to see his close-range effort denied by the impressive Jordan Amissah, the former Vissel Kobe man then took his chance just before the break, after pouncing on Johnston’s whipped cross in expert fashion.

Celtic’s number eight was again the beneficiary of a perfect delivery late on after meeting Engels’ cross to header home, with that taking his total tally to 85 goals in 162 games for the club to date.

While the transfer rumour mill continues to swirl – amid that bizarre talk of a move to Atlanta United – hopefully, Kyogo will be staying put beyond the February deadline.

Meanwhile, the in-demand striker wasn’t alone in catching the eye on Saturday afternoon, with club-record signing, Engels, also pulling the strings in the centre of the park.

Engels showed why his value has soared

Tasked with replacing Matt O’Riley upon his £11m arrival from Club Brugge, the Belgian playmaker has certainly risen to the challenge in recent months, with his performance away at Dingwall having been particularly influential.

Market Movers

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

Indeed, as stated above, the 21-year-old produced a delightful, reverse pass to pick out Kyogo to make it 2-1, while then showing real character to convert from the penalty spot at the second attempt, after initially being denied by the charging Amissah.

Engels – who now has six goals to his name in a Celtic shirt – was also a real creative outlet throughout the 90 minutes after registering five key passes in total from his 104 touches, having also enjoyed a solid 86% pass accuracy rate.

With Kyogo vacating the space out wide, the youngster also regularly drifted into that right channel in order to make his mark, having attempted 11 crosses in total. It was, in truth, an all-action display from the man in the middle.

It is for no reason then that Engels seemingly boasts a soaring market value, with CIES Football Observatory deeming him to be worth as much as €26m (£22m), thus marking a rise of 100% in relation to his initial £11m fee.

Not that Rodgers and co will be looking to cash in so soon into his stay in Glasgow, yet that remarkable rise indicates that perhaps Celtic have actually struck a bargain, even after forking out so heavily.

Tottenham in pole position to sign "complete" £25m centre-back in January

Tottenham Hotspur are now seen as the major contenders to sign a “complete” centre-back in January, with Ange Postecoglou’s side entering pole position to acquire his services as we quickly move towards the winter window.

Spurs target new central defender for Postecoglou amid injury crisis

Spurs links to new central defenders carry on emerging at a very consistent rate ahead of January, coming as the Lilywhites contend without Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Ben Davies, who are all sidelined due to injury.

£41m centre-back now open to leaving club after Tottenham express interest

Spurs need new defensive options.

Postecoglou has just Radu Dragusin and a makeshift Archie Gray as his centre-back pairing right now, and this has reportedly motivated technical director Johan Lange to dip into the market for reinforcements mid-season.

A number of astute defensive options have been linked via the media in the build up to next month, with Feyenoord’s David Hancko, RC Lens starlet Abdukodir Khusanov, Getafe mainstay Omar Alderete and Inter Milan defender Yann Bisseck all mentioned as potential targets.

Hancko is open to leaving Feyenoord amid Spurs’ interest, while it is believed Postecoglou’s side have made an approach for Khusanov, as Lens instruct super-agent Jorge Mendes to find him a new club.

There are some suggestions that Tottenham have held talks over a move for Alderete already, but this is yet to gain traction in the national media, even if the Paraguay international is available for a very doable £13 million – the value of his release clause.

Meanwhile, CaughtOffside believe that Spurs are considering January bid for Bisseck, who has impressed for Serie A champions Inter since signing for the Nerazzurri from Aarhus.

That being said, the German may not come cheap when taking into account the fact he signed a new deal last month.

Tottenham in pole position to sign Leeds defender Pascal Struijk

Alongside Bissek, another report from CaughtOffside has tipped the north Londoners to make a potential move for Leeds United stalwart Pascal Struijk.

The 25-year-old is a crucial figurehead at the heart of Daniel Farke’s backline as the Whites push for Premier League promotion again this season, which has earned him admiring glances from Spurs, Wolves and Brighton.

However, Tottenham are the team in pole position to sign Struijk right now, with Postecoglou’s side viewed as favourites to secure his signature over both Wolves and the Seagulls. Leeds will want around £25 million to sell the defender in January, but that price could be worth considering.

Journalist Suleyman Ozturk, speaking to Voetbal Zone, urged Spurs to make a move for Struijk as far back as last year – claiming he is the “best” defender in England’s second tier and a “complete” player.

“He is a complete and mature defender,” said Ozturk in November 2023. “Now that Micky van de Ven has been injured, I would like to give Ange Postecoglou some advice: Struijk can easily join the defence of Tottenham Hotspur.

“That boy really plays at too low a level. I can well imagine that a big club will come for him in January. He really is the best defender in the Championship at the moment.

“I think he will make that step, because getting into the Dutch selection from the second level is difficult. I really think he’s great.”

Jason Roy smashes PSL-record 145* to keep Gladiators' hopes alive

Earlier, Babar’s ton helped Zalmi post their highest score of 240

Danyal Rasool08-Mar-2023It all descended into a fog of boundaries, and nothing seemed to make sense. The upshot of 483 runs, 54 fours and 21 sixes was that Quetta Gladiators move one step closer to mounting an astonishing comeback and booking a place in the last four for the first time since 2019. Babar Azam’s eighth T20 century saw Peshawar Zalmi post their highest score, setting Gladiators 241 to win. But Jason Roy set to the task like a man possessed, blitzing an unbeaten 145 off 63 balls to ultimately canter to victory with ten balls to spare. It broke Colin Ingram’s record for the highest individual score in PSL history, and the third-highest T20 chase of all time. More importantly, it keeps Gladiators alive in the PSL this season, one win away from likely qualification.Gladiators looked punch-drunk when the first innings ended after a haphazard bowling and fielding performance, combined with a masterclass from Babar and Saim Ayub looked to have broken their spirits. But they came out having a go on a surface not even the most accomplished power-hitters could have dreamt of preparing, and immediately got off to a flyer. Martin Guptill’s brief cameo – 21 off eight – set the tone, but Roy was only just getting warmed up.Fresh off a stint with his national side in Bangladesh, he picked up in Rawalpindi where he’d left off in Mirpur. A blow-by-blow account of the frenzy wouldn’t quite do justice to the fluid, liquid nature of the innings, one six morphing into the next, one over blending into the other. For Zalmi’s bowlers, it began to look like a fever dream as one big over followed another, and the bowlers took turns to front up and cop a hiding. Each of the first eight overs saw at least two boundaries scored, and by this time, Gladiators had got themselves to 118 for one, having knocked off half the target with 12 overs still to spare.ESPNcricinfo LtdThere were supporting acts from the other end, but Roy demanded attention, and gobbled up all of it. Will Smeed and Mohammad Hafeez were adept in their own right, denying Zalmi breathing room at the other end as the asking rate steadily came down. After a pair of relatively quiet overs around the halfway mark, any hopes Zalmi harboured of making inroads were blown away around the 16th over, when six successive balls straddling two overs went for boundaries, effectively sealing Zalmi’s fate. Mohammed Hafeez, who has battled personal trauma over the last 24 hours, was magnificently composed, his 18-ball 41 one of the finest T20 cameos of this season. But ultimately, it had to be Roy who would have the last laugh. It was a caressed drive over mid-off that went all the way for the final six of a manic game that overwhelmed a dazed Zalmi, meaning their route through to the playoffs suddenly leaves them with no margin for error. All of that will ultimately swallow up what was a phenomenal batting performance from Zalmi themselves, particularly their openers. After Ayub was dropped by Naseem Shah early off Hasnain, the two blasted their way through the powerplay, amassing 67 in six overs. But they carried on as if the fielding restrictions hadn’t been eased, and Gladiators had no response to the onslaught coming their way.By the 10th over, the 100-partnership had been reached, and both players had scored half-centuries. But on the day, Babar wasn’t simply accumulating, he was matching Ayub’s strike rate toe-to-toe. They brought up only the second 150-run stand in PSL history – Babar was involved in the first one, too, with Sharjeel Khan at Karachi Kings – and when Ayub fell for a 34-ball 74, Zalmi had pushed past 160.There was a slight deceleration as Babar approached three figures, but once he got there, he let out a yelp of delight. The shackles were off the innings once more, against a Gladiators side who were dropping catches and committing misfields like they were going out of style. Thirty-three runs came off the last two overs as Zalmi piled on the misery, and by the halfway stage, they looked to have sealed their spot in the last four, as well as Gladiators’ fate.Roy, and a majestic Gladiators, had other ideas.

Wolves targeting "phenomenal" PL star who can finally replace Kilman

Wolverhampton Wanderers will be hoping that their form can pick up across the second half of the season, in order for them to avoid relegation. A poor start to the campaign has left them reeling in 17th place in the Premier League.

However, new manager Vitor Periera has overseen three out of four positive results, specifically two wins and a draw, in the top flight to start his tenure. The Old Gold must improve things defensively, given they have conceded 45 goals this term in the Premier League, more than any other side.

Thus, it might not be a sunrise they are looking to recruit one Premier League defender to bolster their backline.

Wolves target Premier League defender

The player in question here is Brighton and Hove Albion defender Adam Webster. It has been a tough season for the centre-back down on the South Coast, and he could be in line to depart the AMEX Stadium this winter.

According to a report from Molineux News, the West Midlands club could make a move for the Englishman before the window slams shut in February. The report explains that Webster ‘is a player Wolves like and have done for a while’, suggesting they could make a move for him in the next couple of weeks.

In terms of a price for Webster, nothing was specified by Procter in this report. However, it does not seem like it would be too costly of a deal to get over the line, given the 30-year-old is valued at £10m by Transfermarkt.

Why Webster would be a good signing

Sadly, it has been a really tough season for Brighton defender Webster in the 2024/25 campaign. He has been ravaged with injuries, missing a total of 13 games and 81 days with a thigh issue.

With that in mind, it is perhaps unsurprising that he has played just seven games for Fabian Hurzeler’s side this term across all competitions.

Only four of those appearances have been starts, with one coming in the Premier League and three in the EFL Cup. That included a game against Crawley Town, in which he scored and was captain.

Indeed, the defender could end up being the long-term replacement for Max Kilman, who left Molineux over the summer for West Ham United.

He cost the Hammers £40m, but that was not money that the Old Gold reinvested at centre-back in the previous transfer window.

Max Kilman for Wolves

Kilman was fantastic for the Midlands outfit during his time at the club. He made 151 appearances in total, captaining the club in his final season. He also managed to score three goals and grab three assists along the way.

As far as a replacement for the Hammers defender goes, Webster could be the man Wolves are looking for. Their defensive statistics from 2023/24 on FBref are similar, and he is arguably an upgrade on the ball.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The Brighton star averaged 6.3 progressive passes per game last season, compared to 3.08 for Kilman, backing up previous claims from pundit Jamie Carragher, who said that Webster’s “passing out from the back, with both feet, is better than any other English central defender”.

Focussing on their defensive stats, the similarities are there to see. Both players read the game well and are aerially dominant. Webster averaged 4.96 ball recoveries and won 2.6 aerial duels per game last season. Comparatively, the former Wolves skipper averaged 4.66 ball recoveries and won 2.26 aerial duels per game.

As the stats suggest, Webster is a “phenomenal” player. At least, that is what football analyst and host of The Overlap: The Breakdown, H, described him as. He would be able to replace the leadership and the defensive quality that Kilman brought to Molineux.

Webster could be an excellent option for the Old Gold as they continue their fight against relegation.

Wagner out of second Test against Sri Lanka; Bracewell called up

Neil Wagner has been ruled out of the second Test against Sri Lanka with a bulging disc in his back and a torn right hamstring. The recovery time for the injuries is around six weeks.Wagner had left the field late in the third session on day three of the ongoing Test in Christchurch, feeling serious discomfort in his back and leg. He failed a fitness Test before play on day four on Sunday but will be available to bat if required. In December, Wagner signed a deal with Yorkshire to play the first ten games of the County Championship season, though now appears unlikely to be fit for their opening fixture against Leicestershire on April 6.New Zealand, meanwhile, have called up seamer Doug Bracewell into the squad.”We all know how much playing Test cricket for New Zealand means to Neil and we are all disappointed to see him side-lined like this,” New Zealand coach Gary Stead said. “The fact he was still hoping to play on, carrying these injuries shows you just how determined he is to try and give his all for the team.”Doug is a skilful bowler who has been in strong form for the Central Stags across formats this season. We believe his skills will complement the rest of the bowlers we have in the group going into the next Test.”Bracewell, 32, had last played a Test in 2016. In addition to the three fast bowlers still playing the first Test – Tim Southee, Matt Henry, and Blair Tickner – New Zealand also have right-armer Scott Kuggeleijn in the squad. Where Kuggeleijn only made his Test debut last month, Bracewell brings substantially more experience, having played 27 Tests where he has bagged 72 wickets. Will Young, who is part of the Test squad, will be released to play in the next round of the Plunket Shield. He will return before the second Test starts on Friday.”We think it’s important for Will to keep getting cricket under his belt,” Stead said. “With the timing of this round and the next Test we thought it was a good opportunity to get him on the park and have time in first-class match conditions.”

    WHAT HAPPENED?

United suffered yet another setback in what has been a dismal season on Tuesday, with Anthony Elanga’s early strike proving enough for Forest to secure a deserved victory at the City Ground. The result left United languishing in 13th place in the Premier League, further increasing scrutiny on Amorim’s tenure.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Tuesday’s loss marked United’s 13th league defeat of the season, putting them just one short of their worst-ever tally in a single Premier League campaign (14). This has put Amorim's tactical blueprint under the spotlight, and the Portuguese manager believes that he might be on borrowed time at Old Trafford.

  • WHAT AMORIM SAID

"In Manchester United, you don't have the time," Amorim said to reporters after the game. "I will not have the time. We have to get it right fast.

"In here, the pressure is too big sometimes. We start the game suffering a goal and put Nottingham in the place they want to be — defending with lots of men — then they have really fast players to make transitions. Even with that, we controlled the game quite well, especially in the second half. We push forward but again, in the final third, we were not good enough."

  • Getty Images Sport

    WHAT NEXT FOR MAN UTD?

Amorim will need to find quick solutions to address the team’s ongoing struggles, as the season threatens to spiral even further out of control. Moreover, the pressure is unlikely to ease as United prepare for a massive derby clash against Manchester City at Old Trafford this weekend.

Alisson (dores na coxa direita), Miranda (lesão no ligamento colateral medial do joelho esquerdo) e Caio (cirurgia no joelho direito permaneceram no Reffis.
