Robson does it the English way

Nothing about Sam Robon’s batting against seam bowling even hints at coming from Australia at all. His pointy back elbow makes him look like an accountant from Somerset

Jarrod Kimber at Headingley21-Jun-2014Sam Robson struggles outside off stump. That is the general consensus. The cricket elite, twitterers and taxi drivers have spoken. Cricket gospel is written and evangelized by them. But don’t all batsmen since the beginning of overarm bowling have a problem just outside off stump in the corridor of uncertainty? Or whatever people call it now. Then there is the length, which is rarely described much more than just back of a length. It is the magic spot that Test bowlers from around the world hit.You cannot drive it. You cannot pull it. You cannot cut it. It is just close and uncomfortable, like Hessian underwear, or that creepy bloke from the pub._____The ball is left outside off stump with the assurance of a man who knows spiritually where his off stump is at all times. In his sleep, or during an attack by giant moody birds. His straight bat comes down so safely that an edge would seem like a rude shock. Runs do not flow, they often barely trickle. But every ball faced takes up more time. Bowlers tire as the ball loses colour, shape and hardness. That is how Nick Compton plays. Today Compton used none of those skills out on a cricket ground, but was instead on a bus to Nottingham taking photos of people playing cards and a selfie of himself in sunglasses. It was Sam Robson who used them._____Robson leaves the ball well. His bat is straight. He covers the off stump. He rocks onto his front foot. Yet, in his first Test he went out twice to fairly standard deliveries. The first time was after just a few balls. It seemed like Sri Lanka had either done their homework on Robson, or just bowled fractionally outside off stump as you would with the new ball to practically any human being. The second innings at Lord’s was longer. But Sri Lanka refused to leave his awkward spot alone. If they went straight, he clipped it on the leg side and scored easily. Outside off stump he scored once. An edge past slips. There was no push to point’s left hand, or dabs short of cover, no forcing, or opening the face, he just went nowhere.Eventually he ran into Shaminda Eranga, who bowled the best spell of the Test and tortured Robson outside off stump. It was the two outswingers and one straight ball combination that had Robson dragging a ball back onto his stumps. Enough was seen. You did not need to be the Sri Lankan video analyst to suggest he had a broken technique._____It is hard to clean bowl Sam Robson. Early in his innings he protects his off stump like a grumpy old man with a shotgun protecting his youngest daughter’s virginity. A middle-stump guard quickly becomes more of an off stump with an early trigger shuffle. It gives him more balls at his strength on his pads than most batsmen would get.For all the talk about his weaknesses, he does have scoring zones. He can cut, in county cricket they talk of pull shots and overpitching will result in him driving. But it is that awkward line on that awkward length that people talked about the most. His biggest problem with this zone is not a weakness, but dryness.Robson does not score when the ball is there. Virtually at all. He does not hit boundaries to put pressure on the bowler. As a top order churner, he does not have to. But he also does not find singles. He cannot get off strike. He is just a slow moving target protecting his weak spot. His first 50 balls today in this area had Robson scoring four runs from the seamers. Against Eranga in that time, it was one run off his first 30 balls there. That is five overs of a bowler bowling in the exact zone of trouble without the batsman getting off strike more than once. Now exchange the name of Eranga for Steyn, Harris or Boult. Would anyone want to give them 30 balls at you without getting off strike? Would many be able to? In first-class cricket you can sit on a bowler for a while. In Test cricket, the bowlers will sit on you.Analysts the world over will mine every single aspect of Robson’s strong willed, disciplined, nuggety, patient hundred today. He might have made 127, but his metadata score will be far higher. The video packages will show ball after ball of him not getting off strike. Plans will be hatched, attacks will be prepared and pitch maps will be emailed.Robson will patiently try to outlive them. That is his most impressive trait. Patience. It could be used against him, but he certainly will not run out of it anytime soon. You can only imagine the stick he received as a young guy playing the patience game in Sydney grade cricket while hummer driving bankers from Paddington and bearded brickies from Blacktown abused him for never playing a shot.Nothing about his batting against seam bowling even hints at coming from Australia at all. His pointy back elbow makes him look like an accountant from Somerset. His fidgeting with his front pad is straight out of Millfield School. And the squat bounce at the crease is often seen at places that sound like Thurrock, Frieth and Whitestaunton. Until he moves out of the crease against spin, his batting is as English as Gooch’s back lift, Grace’s belly or Atherton being caught down the leg side._____The ball was full and wide, Robson chased it and drove it efficiently and inelegantly into the covers. He ran hard, and easily made his second run, and then looked for a third. Having scored his 100th run, he did not throw the bat up, abandon a potential run, take his helmet off, kiss any logos, jump or even show any acknowledgement to the crowd. He looked for a third.Sam Robson may make a lot of Test runs, but he will have to work harder and longer than most to make them. He will always be looking for a third.

Pakistan bowlers stifle Ireland in rain-hit match

Nida Dar stands up with bat, ball and in the field to underpin her side’s victory

Valkerie Baynes19-Jul-2022An excellent combined Pakistan bowling effort through the middle overs stifled Ireland and sealed victory by 13 runs in their rain-hit T20I, which was reduced to 14 overs per side at Bready.Player of the Match Nida Dar set Pakistan up with a quick-fire 26 off 15 balls after Muneeba Ali had compiled a 24-ball 29 either side of an interruption after the rain that had delayed the start returned five overs in.Dar was also instrumental in containing Ireland after the hosts had enjoyed a promising four-over powerplay, as she, Tuba Hassan and Fatima Sana took one wicket apiece.Sana and Anam Amin were miserly over the last two overs which saw three run outs and an lbw in favour of Sana as Ireland’s task of chasing down the 23 runs still needed proved insurmountable. That came down largely to Hassan, Sana and Amin putting the clamp on Ireland through the middle overs after top-scorer Gaby Lewis and Rebecca Stokell reached 34 without loss after four overs.Hassan broke through when she bowled Stokell for 19 with one that skidded onto off stump. Lewis and Orla Prendergast managed just nine runs off the ensuing three overs before Dar had Prendergast caught by Iram Javed off a top edge behind point.Hassan and Amin combined to run out Laura Delaney, attempting a second after she had driven Amin to sweeper cover, Hassan firing the ball back into the bowler to great effect and Amin conceded just four runs off the over.Lewis had started brightly with 15 off just seven balls including back-to-back fours, pulled and swept off Amin in just the second over of Ireland’s reply. She dealt Kainat Imtiaz similar treatment through the off side in the seventh to reach 32 off 20 deliveries but from there the going got tougher.Lewis eventually fell for 47 off 41, run out in the final over, cutting Sana towards Dar, who collected and threw back to Sana at the batter’s end as Lewis came back for a second run.Two dot balls from Sana followed before she trapped Mary Waldron lbw and then Arlene Kelly was run out by yet another sharp throw in from Dar to the keeper.Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat, resuming on 34 for 1 after Ava Canning bowled Iram Javed on the first legitimate ball of the match, having sent down a leg-side wide to begin with.Delaney bowled Ali shortly after the restart with a full, straight delivery that pegged back off stump as Ali tried to swipe across the line to make it 43 for 2. Delaney struck again in her next over, bowling Bismah Maroof with one that skidded on and clattered into middle and off for 13.Dar and Ayesha Naseem put on 40 runs for the fourth wicket in the next four overs, Naseem striking Delaney for six over long off and Dar launching Jane Maguire over the midwicket fence. But Maguire accounted for both within moments of Dar’s m, bowling her with a slower ball before she had Naseem caught by Kelly at long on two balls later to finish with 2 for 14 from three overs.Ireland next face Australia on Thursday after their first match ended in a resounding nine-wicket win to the visitors.Delaney, the Ireland captain, said her side would “look to push the boundaries in the middle period” going forward.”Bitterly disappointing,” she said of the loss to Pakistan. “This is the challenge playing against some of the best sides in the world, you’re going to go out and you’re going to play good cricket and you’re still going to be beaten.”So we’ll go back, we’ll regroup again tomorrow with training. We play against Australia then on Thursday which we know again will be a really good contest but we’re just happy to be playing good cricket against competitive sides.”

"Big step" – Arteta shares "positive news" out of Arsenal after Edu blow

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has shared some much-needed “positive news” out of London Colney, following a regrettable last few days which saw the north Londoners lose influential director Edu Gaspar and fall behind in the Premier League title race.

Arsenal prepare for first game since Edu announcement

Arteta’s side travel to the San Siro this evening for a pivotal Champions League clash against Serie A champions Inter Milan, and a win would seriously lift the spirits of supporters right now.

Sky Sports: Arsenal set sights on signing "exciting" player after Edu exit

He’s got a growing reputation.

ByEmilio Galantini Nov 6, 2024

A damning 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United at St. James’ Park handed Arsenal their second loss of the campaign and Eddie Howe’s first win since mid-September – a result which saw Liverpool gain a seven-point advantage over them at the top of the pile.

Even though it is still very early doors, this gap will still be difficult for Arteta’s side to overcome, especially considering Liverpool look near-unbeatable under new manager Arne Slot.

Arsenal were dealt more bad news on Monday when journalist Sami Mokbel revealed that Edu was set to leave his post as sporting director. The Brazilian brings an end to his five-year stay at the Emirates after playing a key role in Arsenal’s development, having worked in tandem with Arteta to transform the club back into an elite English side.

Edu oversaw the signings of key men like Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice, William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes to name a few, whilst also helping Arsenal in the managerial recruitment process to appoint Arteta as manager.

It is believed Edu is poised to link up with Greek tycoon Evangelos Marinakis, where he could take on a chief executive role in the day-to-day running of clubs under his ownership, like Nottingham Forest, Olympiacos and Rio Ave in Portugal.

There are suggestions that Arsenal chief Jason Ayto is a real candidate to replace Edu, with The Mirror journalist John Cross calling him an “obvious choice” for the role. Whoever the Kroenkes decide upon, it needs to be the right decision, and could prove pivotal to Arsenal’s long-term future.

Arteta shares "positive news" out of Arsenal ahead of Inter Milan

In the wake of a fair bit of bad news recently, Arteta has now shared a “positive” Arsenal update on Odegaard’s fitness.

The Norway star has been sidelined with ankle ligament damage since September, but he’s now on the verge of a return and back in full training with the squad, which will come as much-needed relief for Arsenal who are now set to welcome their captain back to the field very soon.

“The positive news is it’s great to have Martin back,” said Arteta in his pre-match press conference.

“He’s trained with us for the first time, a full session today. He felt good, it’s a bit earlier than we expected, but he wanted to be with the team, so we’ll decide tomorrow whether we use him, but at least it’s a big step that he’s travelled with us and is part of the team.”

The 25-year-old’s presence will be key in the title race and Europe, with Arsenal seriously missing Odegaard’s creativity in his absence. A return against Inter would be a spectacular sight, but if not, his Premier League return surely isn’t too far away now.

Zak Chappell agrees switch to Derbyshire from Nottinghamshire

Fast bowler Zak Chappell will join Derbyshire at the end of the season after the expiry of his contract with Nottinghamshire.Chappell, 25, came through at Leicestershire and was in high demand when he moved to Trent Bridge at the end of 2018. But he only managed 18 appearances for Notts across all three formats in four seasons with the club, twice going out on loan to Gloucestershire. He featured in Nottinghamshire’s Royal London Cup opener on Tuesday and will remain available for selection until the end of the summer.”Zak is an incredibly skilled bowler and a great addition to our attack for all formats,” Derbyshire’s head of cricket, Mickey Arthur, said. “He probably hasn’t played the amount of cricket he’s wanted to in recent years, but he’s kept developing and worked hard on his game, now he has the chance to show what he can do as part of our bowling unit.”Signing Zak is a big move for the club, as it gives us even more competition and quality within our ranks for the 2023 season and beyond.”Chappell claimed his best first-class bowling figures of 6 for 44 with Leicestershire in 2018, but has not played consistently since then. He has taken nine Championship wickets at 37.77 this season, but enjoyed more success in the Blast with 11 wickets and an economy of 7.70.Chappell said: “When I heard of Derbyshire’s interest, I jumped at the chance to come and work with a top-class coaching unit in Mickey Arthur and Ajmal Shahzad.”Last season, I played a good amount across all formats and I feel I’m at a point now where I need to be playing top-level cricket week in, week out and signing for Derbyshire gives me the chance to do that.”Derbyshire have an ambitious project with plenty of quality in the squad. You can see the direction Mickey wants to take the club in and that really attracted me.”Nottinghamshire’s head coach Peter Moores said that injuries and competition for places had limited Chappell’s chances at Trent Bridge.”Our bowling attack has certainly been competitive to break into for this past couple of years and that, combined with picking up some injuries at key times, has limited Zak’s opportunities to play first-team cricket,” Moores said. “He wants to be playing regularly across all formats. Hopefully this move gives him an opportunity to do that, and it keeps him close to his roots in the East Midlands, so we completely understand and respect his decision.”His attitude around the group has been positive throughout his time at Trent Bridge. He trains hard, has gone about his periods of injury rehab professionally and has handled his decision to leave in a respectful and positive way.”There’s lots to play for and plenty we can still achieve during the remainder of the season – and I know Zak will be giving it everything. Once we get to the end of September, it will be a case of thanking him for his efforts and wishing him well for the next part of his career.”

Conte and Napoli planning January bid for "extraordinary" Arsenal player

Serie A giants Napoli and Antonio Conte are now planning a January bid for an “extraordinary” Arsenal player, who could well be tempted by a mid-season move.

Players linked with January exits from Arsenal

It has been a difficult start to the season for Mikel Arteta, who was tipped to guide the Gunners to their first Premier League title in 21 years.

Last week, Arsenal lost influential sporting director Edu Gaspar, who will no longer play a pivotal role in growing Arsenal as a club after announcing his departure. This comes amid their troubles on the field, with Arsenal failing to win a single league game since their 3-1 victory over Southampton in early October.

The north Londoners are now nine points behind league leaders Liverpool as their chase for a first domestic crown in decades looks to be unravelling already, but despite this, there are still reports that Arteta could look to offload personnel in the winter.

Left-back Kieran Tierney is widely expected to depart Arsenal after falling out of favour under Arteta, with the Scotsman not playing for them since the club’s Community Shield win over Man City in 2023.

Meanwhile, it is also believed that Arsenal have been contemplating the sale of Takehiro Tomiyasu in January. The £100,000-per-week Japan international has suffered from serious injury problems since pre-season, with Tomiyasu playing just six minutes all campaign due to a recurring knee issue.

“We don’t know that [how long he will be out for],” said Arteta on Tomiyasu last month.

“It doesn’t look like, hopefully, a long period, but we have to see when he comes back how he reacts to the load and to the impact on the pitch as well.

“But we really need him, he has been incredible, his work rate, the amount of hours he has put in to get back. He did it and he was in great shape – and now he has got something else again. But, we are all behind him. He needs our support, and hopefully he will be fine.”

As well as Tomiyasu and Tierney, there are suggestions that defender Jakub Kiwior is expected to depart N5 next year.

Napoli planning January bid to sign Jakub Kiwior from Arsenal

According to Italian news outlet TUTTOmercatoWEB, Napoli are thinking about making a loan bid for Kiwior in January as Conte’s side scour the market for new central defensive reinforcements.

They’re also admirers of Radu Dragusin from Tottenham, but Arsenal’s fringe defender could be far more attainable in their eyes due to the Poland international being further down Arteta’s pecking order.

The loan bid could include an option to buy or an obligation based on certain conditions, which would hand Kiwior the opportunity to make a permanent Serie A return in the summer, who has received high praise from international teammate Robert Lewandowski in the past.

“He has great potential,” said Lewandowski in 2022 when asked about Kiwior.

“During the warm-up of the game with the Netherlands, I thought: ‘Who is this guy?’ Then, during the match, I saw that he is extraordinary.”

Argentine legend explains why Cristiano Ronaldo has 'always been better' than Lionel Messi – but admits CR7 'went too far' with GOAT claim

Argentine icon Hugo Gatti has explained why Cristiano Ronaldo has “always been better” than Lionel Messi but will never be considered the GOAT.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Portuguese superstar Ronaldo recently told when assessing his own standing among the all-time greats: “Taste is one thing, saying this, that or that, whether you prefer Messi, Pele or [Diego] Maradona, I hear it and I respect it but to say that Cristiano isn't complete is a lie. I'm the most complete. I don't see anyone better than me and I tell you that with all my heart.”

    WHAT HUGO GATTI SAID

Legendary goalkeeper Gatti believes CR7 has gone too far in that assessment, telling : "It is public knowledge that, for me, there is not, nor was there, nor will there be anyone like Pele. Pele is unrivalled, he was something else. Cristiano was very good in recent times, but he is not close to Pele, nor are Maradona and Messi close to Pele.

“But what he says holds weight because he has been a champion of everything, a goalscorer and has played in the most important clubs in the world. It suits him well, he has more ego than me, but no, he is not the best in history. After that, for me, there are [Johan] Cruyff, Maradona, Ronaldinho and [Alfredo] Di Stefano.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ronaldo has five Ballons d’Or to his name, compared to Messi’s eight, but has claimed major honours at Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus while still starring for Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr at 40 years of age. Messi his currently with Inter Miami in MLS, having previously enjoyed spells at Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.

    DID YOU KNOW?

Gatti added: “In recent times, Cristiano was more important than Messi. He played for bigger clubs, he was a bigger scorer, he always takes a risk. You have to say ‘I am the best player in history’, I have not heard Messi or Maradona say that. And he says it to you. It doesn’t sound bad to him. I love Cristiano very much, but there was no one like Pele and there will never be one. Pele was better than Maradona, Cristiano, Messi, Ronaldinho, Cruyff together.”

Celtic now ready to agree huge salary increase to convince defender to stay

da spicy bet: Celtic are now ready to offer a major wage increase to one of their key men in a bid to convince them to sign a new contract in Scotland, it has been claimed.

Celtic unlikely candidates for Champions League qualification

da dobrowin: Following a 7-1 thrashing by Borussia Dortmund in their second Champions League outing of the season, Celtic looked rank outsiders to qualify for the knockout stages of the new-look Champions League.

However, the Scottish Premiership champions have turned it around since, drawing with Europa League champions Atalanta before pulling off a famous 3-1 win over German side RB Leipzig in their most recent outing.

Goals from Nicolas Kuhn and Reo Hatate helped the Bhoys come from a goal down in front of a raucous Celtic Park to claim all three points, and move to seven from four games.

Currently in one of the knockout qualification spots, Brendan Rodgers’ side face games against Club Brugge, Dinamo Zagreb, Young Boys and Aston Villa in their final four games, likely needing three wins from those to cement an automatic qualification spot and two for a spot in the knockout qualification round.

It continues what has been a strong start to the season domestically, with Celtic yet to lose this season and sitting joint top of the Scottish Premiership with Aberdeen, who they drew 2-2 with last month before thrashing them 6-0 in the Scottish League Cup. Now, there is more good news for the Bhoys.

Celtic make contract breakthrough

That comes as reports claim that Celtic have made a breakthrough in talks over a new contract for defender Alistair Johnston, which will see him pick up a hefty pay rise.

The defender, who Pat Nevin described as “spectacular” in their win over RB Leipzig, has become one of the first names on Rodgers’ teamsheet following his move in January 2023, and though he is under contract until 2027 as things stand, his form is set to be rewarded with a new deal in a bid to ward off potential interest from abroad.

As per the Daily Record, Celtic and the defender are “close to agreeing a new contract”, which “will hand the 26-year-old a significant increase in salary” as well as increasing the length of his stay. It is added that talks have advanced “significantly”, with Johnston’s agent having flown to Scotland to finalise the deal.

However, there is less good news for the contract of fellow defender Greg Taylor, who is set to become a free agent as things stand at the end of the campaign. Speaking earlier in the season, Rodgers revealed tying him down to a new contract was a “priority”, however the report adds that “there has been nothing agreed with the Scotland international”, which will likely be Celtic’s next focus.
