Less touches than Raya: Arsenal must look to bench 5/10 star after Brighton

Arsenal dropped their first points of the new Premier League season in bizarre circumstances as the Gunners drew 1-1 with Brighton at the Emirates Stadium.

Mikel Arteta's men looked good value for a first-half advantage at the break, Kai Havertz darting onto Bukayo Saka's through ball and lobbing the ball over the goalkeeper.

Sadly, the game changed in the second half when Declan Rice was sent off in controversial circumstances.

It was a moment in the game that totally changed the momentum. At one stage, the Seagulls were enjoying 81% of the ball over a five-minute period and left north London with a point thanks to Joao Pedro's neat finish from close range.

Still, Arsenal could have won the game. Havertz had a wonderful opportunity in the second half but was denied by Bart Verbruggen before the German turned provider, whipping the ball into Saka who couldn't quite get his feet in the right order and he was denied by the Brighton goalkeeper again.

In all, the Premier League title challengers did well to pick up a point but they will be ruing that incident with Rice in the second half.

Why Rice was sent off

In the first half, the club's record signing was given a booking for a strong challenge. Rice slid in, won none of the ball and was rightfully given a caution.

Whether he was rightfully given a second yellow, however, is up for debate.

The former West Ham man had a coming together with Joel Veltman on the left-hand side of the pitch and in Brighton's desperation to take the set play quickly from deep within their own half, Rice stopped them from doing so.

Veltman kicked out, Rice nudged the ball away and chaos ensued. By the letter of the law, the £105m man was rightfully sent off. What will specifically frustrate the Gunners is the lack of consistency.

In the opening 45 minutes Pedro also kicked the ball away, and at a far greater distance than Rice. Was he cautioned? No, he wasn't.

So, once all was said and done, Arsenal were forced to finish the clash with ten men and Rice will now miss a vital away clash against Tottenham after the international break.

Who is set to replace Rice against Spurs

This red is a bitter pill to swallow for those of an Arsenal persuasion. Away at Spurs, Rice would be vital but he won't be available. Nor will Mikel Merino.

Cruelly, he was injured in his very first full training session with the squad. Gabriel reportedly landed him on which caused a shoulder injury that will disrupt the Spaniard's first few weeks in the capital.

As a result, it's likely Jorginho will come into the team and partner Thomas Partey. However, once Rice is back and Merino is up to full speed, the Ghanaian simply has to be dropped to the bench.

His performance against Brighton, although not abysmal, showcased why. In truth, Partey hasn't started the season awfully either. He did, after all, score that important goal against Aston Villa a week ago.

The trouble is that his lack of athleticism hurts this Arsenal side, as does his lacklustre giveaways of possession.

Against Brighton he played some nice passes, notably into Saka on the right-hand side but in tight spaces inside their own half, he found it difficult to evade Brighton's press and was guilty of ceding possession.

Partey did so on seven occasions throughout the match, once every 5.5 touches of the ball. From a player in his position, you would surely expect better. Handed a 5/10 match rating by GOAL's Charles Watts, the reporter summed up his display aptly: "Struggled in possession. Made some good recovery tackles, but was slack with the ball at times."

That was summed up by a pass success rate of 76%. It's not great at all but it was a tally that ended up being the third-best on Arsenal's team. That's a rather alarming statistic for a side that love to keep possession.

To make matters worse, the 31-year-old only won three of his eight duels. On that evidence, it's no surprise Merino has been brought in. He won more duels than any other player in Europe's top five leagues in 2023/24.

So, while Partey will have to stick around for the trip to Tottenham in a fortnight, barring a remarkable display there, he must be taken out of the side long-term.

Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal back in Bangladesh Test squad for South Africa tour

Fazle Mahmud and Mohammad Naim dropped from Test squad; Khaled Ahmed in ODI squad

Mohammad Isam03-Mar-2022Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal have returned to Bangladesh’s Test squad for the forthcoming series against South Africa. Tamim missed the Test leg of the New Zealand tour due to multiple thumb injuries while Shakib skipped the trip for personal reasons.Shakib’s comeback into the Test fold comes after BCB president Nazmul Hasan had said that the 34-year-old would tour South Africa even though he had initially planned to skip Test cricket for six months.”Now that he is not going to the IPL, I don’t see any reason why he shouldn’t play the Test series in South Africa,” Hassan had said last Monday.” So forget about it. This is no longer in my mind. The IPL was preventing him from playing [the two Test series], but now he will play [both series].”However, Fazle Mahmud and Mohammad Naim have been dropped from the Test squad. Fazle had previously earned his place in the side on the back of chart-topping numbers in domestic first-class cricket while Naim was a left-field pick as he is more of a T20 specialist. Naim had made his debut in the second Test in Christchurch, but didn’t make much of an impression.Bangladesh stuck with the ODI squad that recently beat Afghanistan 2-0 at home. He’s available: Chelsea plot raid for "beast" who’s better than Disasi

Despite only signing for the Blues last summer, one of the many names that seem to be on the chopping block at Chelsea this summer, is French defender, Axel Disasi.

Since the arrival of new manager, Enzo Maresca, the importance of on-ball qualities in defense has risen, and therefore it is believed Disasi could be further down the pecking order, than defensive peers such as Wesley Fofana and Levi Colwill.

Disasi – who has caught the eye of Newcastle United – made 44 appearances for Chelsea last season in all competitions, scoring three goals, and contributing to ten clean sheets in his 3,690 minutes played, although the belief is that he could now be shown the door.

In turn, the Blues could look to acquire a suitable upgrade…

Chelsea transfer news

According to reports from TEAMtalk, Chelsea could make a move to sign Liverpool defender, Joe Gomez, before the end of the summer window. The Merseysiders are reportedly keen to sell the England international, and are willing to accept an appropriate bid.

The reports claim Maresca has made it clear to the club chiefs that he wants defensive reinforcements in the centre-back position, with Gomez being high on their shortlist.

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez

Gomez made 51 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool last season, providing three assists, and contributing to 14 clean sheets in his 3,133 minutes played. He also played a variety of positions, making 25 appearances at right-back, 19 appearances at left-back, five in central defence, and even two as a defensive midfielder.

Gomez vs Disasi comparison

Like Gomez, Disasi did have to fill in at right-back a few times last season, due to the injuries of Reece James and Malo Gusto. The 26-year-old made eight appearances at right-back, and due to James's injury issues, any defensive acquisition would need to have that same versatility shown by Disasi, something Gomez has in abundance.

Back in 2018, Troy Deeney described the £85k-per-week star as a "beast" of a player, claiming he could be England's centre-half for the next 15 years. Since then, it hasn't quite worked out that way for Gomez, only making 15 appearances for England, and not nailing down a starting spot for the Three Lions.

However, you can see the value in Gomez as a player, putting up good defensive action numbers, and being able to do so in a variety of positions. He doubled Disasi's tackle numbers, averaging 2.37 per 90, and nearly doubled his interceptions too, with 1.09 per 90.

Joe Gomez in action against Manchester City

Whilst Disasi averages more passes attempted than Gomez, and a higher pass completion percentage, this could be down to two factors. One being Gomez featuring more as a fullback last season, getting fewer touches and build up involvement than the central defenders, or secondly, due to the more progressive nature of his passes (higher risk).

Gomez averages 0.99 more progressive passes than Disasi per 90, 0.19 more passes into the final third, and 0.93 more progressive carries. This would be important for Maresca's system, having the ability to progress play through the lines, whether that's through passing or carrying.

As such, the Liverpool man could represent the perfect upgrade in the backline, while also allowing Maresca to finally show Disasi the door.

Heather Knight: England have 'parked' Ashes disappointment ahead of World Cup

Relaxation in Queenstown helps squad to overcome quarantine ahead of tournament

Andrew Miller25-Feb-2022

Heather Knight hits the nets in Queenstown•Getty Images

Heather Knight, England’s captain, believes her squad has successfully “parked” the disappointment of the recent Ashes loss, and is ready to embrace the ebbs and flows of the forthcoming World Cup in New Zealand, where they will be defending the title they won on home soil in 2017.The England players emerged from their mandatory quarantine period three days ahead of schedule, and are due to face Bangladesh and South Africa in a pair of warm-up matches in Lincoln next week, ahead of their rematch with Australia in their tournament opener in Hamilton on Saturday. And though England’s last ODI meetings with Australia did not go to plan, as they were routed 3-0 in the decisive leg of the multi-format Ashes series, Knight believes that a few days of golf and mountain-climbing in their picturesque base of Queenstown has helped to reinvigorate the players and set them up for a very different sort of challenge in the coming weeks.”When you have to do most things outdoors, the place you want to be is one of the most stunning, beautiful places in Queenstown,” Knight said. “A few of us managed to take on Ben Lomond, which was a lot of fun, climbing for the views of Queenstown.”There’s been a lot of golf, a lot of just going to cafes, and just enjoying what Queenstown has to offer. It’s been a chance to just switch off, do a few outdoorsy things away from cricket, gather our headspace, and try and refocus following the Ashes.”

The spectre of Covid continues to linger over the tournament, with the ICC taking the unusual step of sanctioning nine-a-side fixtures in the event of significant outbreaks, and have also permitted the use of female back-room staff as substitute fielders.”It’s created a few jokes among the female staff – we’ve got the doctor and the manager down to have a net tomorrow,” Knight added.”It’s probably unlikely it will be a Covid-free World Cup, but that is the hope. With the rules around close contacts, there’s a scenario where it might happen, so people are desperate to get the tournament on if something goes badly wrong with Covid. It’s not an ideal situation and hopefully it never happens.”More immediately, England’s most pressing concern is to firm up their opening partnership, given Lauren Winfield-Hill’s struggles to make the most of her renewed opportunities, five years on from her role in the 2017 World Cup win. For the final ODI in Australia, England’s nailed-on opener, Tammy Beaumont, was partnered by Emma Lamb, but Lamb’s second-ball duck on debut has left the team management no clearer about the right course to take.”It’s pretty obvious we haven’t quite nailed that spot yet,” Knight said. “It’s never ideal, not being totally sure on your batting line-up leading into a World Cup, but that’s the position we’ve been in. The warm-up games will be a chance, for whoever we decide to go with, to try and cement their spot and really get some form going into the tournament.”Related

England's batting a concern heading into ODI World Cup

Knight admits 'mentally fatigued' England lacked motivation with Ashes gone

Although England enter the tournament as defending champions, it is Australia who will be runaway favourites for the title this time around, following their dominant displays in recent years. They have lost just twice in 33 completed ODIs since that last event, including a world-record run of 26 consecutive wins, from the start of 2018 through to India’s two-wicket win in Mackay last September.Knight, however, believes that England’s dramatic run to the title in 2017 will still hold them in good stead, not least because they had to overcome adversity at several key moments of that campaign – including an opening-match loss to India in Derby, and two agonisingly close finishes against Australia and South Africa, prior to their nerve-shredding fightback in the final, against India at Lord’s.”Australia are going to go in as favourites, but [2017] should give us a lot of experience of what it takes to be successful in these events,” Knight said. “Sometimes it’s just about getting over the line, and I think that’s what we did so well in 2017. We just were able to win those games that were really tight. We were able to keep our composure in the big moments, and deal with all the off-field stuff that comes with the World Cup.”It was one of the best five-six weeks of my life, for sure,” she added. “It was an amazing competition and we remember how imperfect it was as well. Because we won the competition, you look back and think it was all plain sailing, and it completely wasn’t.”It’s a nice reminder to look back, because we’re going to have to ride the highs and the lows, and that’s almost the brilliance of being in a World Cup. The different countries you have to face, the travel, the ebbs and flows of the tournament, and trying to peek towards the back end of the group stages. I’m so excited to get going again.”

Lyon excited about bowling partnership with Swepson

Nathan Lyon is excited about the prospect of forming a spin partnership with Mitchell Swepson, but the weather forecast and recent history at the SCG may count against it happening this week against England in the fourth Ashes Test. With the Ashes secured and England providing weak opposition there is a school of thought that the upcoming Test is a prime opportunity to blood Swepson, the Queensland legspinner, ahead of Australia’s overseas campaigns in Pakistan and Sri Lanka later in the year. The emergence of Cameron Green as a viable option for a third quick, having had a major impact with the ball this series, would allow Australia to field a balanced attack. But showers are forecast throughout the contest while the SCG has not been a happy hunting ground for spinners of late.Lyon bagged a 10-wicket match haul against New Zealand in 2019-2020 but averages 40.94 on the ground while over the last decade spinners have averaged 48.17 – the third highest of all Australia’s men’s Test venues. However, Swepson is as ready as he’ll ever be for his chance at Test cricket. With all three of Australia’s World Test Championship away series in the current cycle on the subcontinent, he could have a big say in how the side builds on their Ashes success.”I think Swepo has been Queensland’s best player for a number of years,” Lyon said. “Obviously I’m a big fan of spin bowlers so probably watch him a lot closer than what I watch Marnus [Labuschagne] or Uzzie [Khawaja]. He’s been around our group for a long period of time now and when he gets his opportunity, no doubt he will take it and run.”I’m excited about our relationship, our friendship is fantastic already, but really excited about the opportunity to bowl in tandem with Swepo whenever that may come, whether that’s here in a couple of days or in Hobart or in Pakistan.””I love bowling in partnership with spinners for sure. I’ve done it a lot in subcontinent conditions so if the opportunity does come to play two spinners I know we’ll really enjoy building that partnership. We’ve been doing it in the nets but it’s a lot different.”Usman Khawaja is likely to replace Travis Head in Sydney•Getty Images

Lyon did not believe a dodgy forecast (not entirely unusual for a Sydney Test) had to spell the end of Swepson’s hopes although it strengthens the likelihood that Australia will retain their usual balance. Josh Hazlewood is expected to train fully on Monday as he continues his recovery from the side strain he picked up in Brisbane and it could yet be that Scott Boland does not retain his place despite the 6 for 7 he claimed in Melbourne.”It seems to be every time we put stumps in the ground here it brings the rain which is unfortunate,” Lyon said. “Does it become a bit challenging for spinners? Yeah, it can if the ball gets wet, but we are pretty lucky these days with the quality of the groundskeepers who make the surface pretty dry and the ground drains pretty quickly.”Swepson will only be selected if he is genuinely part of Australia’s best attack to win the match with World Test Championship points available and the hunger to take the series with a whitewash to extend England’s barren streak in Australia that dates back to 2010-11.”There’s no more dead rubbers – and I’ve never considered them when you wear a baggy green – firstly because there’s the World Test Championship and we want to go 5-0 up,” Lyon said. “If the conditions suit then we pick the best team to win that Test to make sure we keep moving forward. The Ashes for me is the pinnacle but I’d love to be part of a Test Championship final to state our case for the No. 1 team in the world.”Australia’s squad will be bolstered on Monday by Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis who were driving up from Melbourne on Sunday – to avoid the risk of a commercial flight – having been added to as cover following Travis Head’s positive Covid-19 result which has ruled him out. Usman Khawaja is expected to come into the XI.Marcus Harris is also driving himself to Sydney having not joined the team’s charter flight as an extra precaution after he dined with Head. Nic Maddinson will remain in Melbourne for now but continues to be a stand-by player. All Australian squad members, staff and families returned negative results in the latest round of testing. This will again be the traditional Pink Test at the SCG which has become a central part of the Australian cricket calendar to raise funds for the Jane McGrath foundation. But Glenn McGrath will be unable to take part in the lead-up activities and at least the first two days having tested positive for Covid-19. It is hoped he may be able to attend by day three on January 7 which is the official Jane McGrath Day.

Carey's century trumped by Renshaw as Queensland slay South Australia

Renshaw hammered 156 from 109 balls after Gurinder Sandhu’s hat-trick had restricted the home side

AAP28-Nov-2021Ashes hopeful Alex Carey blasted a century for South Australia in a timely return to batting form but it wasn’t enough to prevent a six-wicket loss to Queensland in their one-day clash at Adelaide Oval.Carey top-scored for his side with 101 from 93 balls and combined with Henry Hunt (61) for a record-breaking 159-run opening stand before Gurinder Sandhu’s second career hat-trick helped Queensland bowl out the hosts for 274.Matt Renshaw, who is part of the Australia A squad, anchored the Bulls’ run chase with a career-best unbeaten 156 from 109 balls and received good support from Max Bryant (68), with the pair putting on 177 for the fourth wicket. It was Queensland’s second win from four matches in the one-day competition this season, while South Australia are struggling with a 1-3 record. In the mix to replace former captain Tim Paine as Australia’s Test gloveman at the Gabba next month, Carey had failed to reach double figures in any of his previous six innings for the Redbacks this season. He made a patient start to his innings before blasting his second 50 in just 30 balls, charging to his second one-day century of the season. He smashed a huge slog-sweep six off Marnus Labuschagne but was eventually bowled by the part-time legspinner when attempting to cut a delivery that wasn’t quite as short as he had expected.Queensland quick Sandhu finished with 4 for 44 from his nine overs, with Matt Kuhnemann also impressing as the final six South Australia wickets fell in the space of just 15 balls.Like Carey, Travis Head was hoping to impress national selectors, but he was dropped twice before his luck ran out on 29, caught by Mark Steketee off Kuhnemann.Queensland’s run chase began slowly and they were in trouble early when Test squad members Usman Khawaja and Labuschagne fell cheaply. Labuschagne departed in stunning fashion when he was run out by Hunt’s direct hit from a tough angle. But Renshaw’s composed knock steered the Bulls home. Featuring 15 fours and five sixes, his century came from 91 balls with his third fifty taking just 16 deliveries as he plundered Wes Agar.

Club president says Liverpool tried & failed to sign his star before Chiesa

Whilst they did manage to get deals over the loan to sign Federico Chiesa and Giorgi Mamardashvili, Liverpool were also reportedly in talks to sign another winger before their deal collapsed.

Liverpool transfer news

Aside from two late additions, Liverpool endured a quiet first transfer window under Arne Slot with their biggest moment the Martin Zubimendi saga. For a moment, it looked as though the Spaniard was on his way to provide the Reds with the solution at the base of their midfield once and for all, only to stay put at Real Sociedad.

Martin Zubimendi

Those at Anfield then decided that it was Zubimemdi or no one in midfield, opting instead to solve future problems with the addition of an Alisson replacement in Mamardashvili and a right-winger to compete or perhaps replace Mohamed Salah next summer in Chiesa.

After putting pen to paper at the club, Chiesa revealed his delight, telling Liverpool's official website: “I’m so happy to be a Liverpool player. When Richard Hughes called me and he said, ‘Do you want to join Liverpool?’ – and the coach called me – I said yes immediately because I know the history of this club, I know what it represents to the fans. So, I’m so happy and I can’t wait to get started.”

Liverpool must regret selling a star with more PL goals than Salah in 23/24

He’s starred away from Anfield over the last few years.

ByEthan Lamb Sep 5, 2024

As it turns out, however, there was another attacking option before they turned to the Italian. According to Pumas president Luis Raul Gonzalez Perez, as relayed by LFC Transfer Room, Liverpool were in talks to sign Cesar Huertas before the deal fell through. The Reds reportedly planned to loan the winger to Sunderland, only for the Black Cats to fail in their side of the negotiations.

Having been in such advanced talks to sign the 23-year-old that they were already planning his loan move, Huertas may well be one to watch when the January transfer window swings open in the new year.

Liverpool don't need Huertas after Chiesa

Whilst at 23 years old, Huertas would be someone for years to come, Liverpool's best depth comes on the left-hand side, which the addition of Chiesa only added to given his versatility. Alongside Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo and Chiesa, the chances of Huertas breaking into Slot's side were slim to none.

The saving grace could have been the fact that Huertas can play on the right-hand side amid doubts over Salah's long-term future. As a player who managed 12 goals and nine assists in the last campaign, the Mexican may well be one of few players in good stead to step in and complete the near-impossible task of replacing the Egyptian.

Now, that task looks likely to go the way of Chiesa, especially if Salah does depart at the end of his current contract next summer as will be the case if nothing changes in the coming months.
