New Zealand Cricket turns down offer to tour Pakistan

New Zealand Cricket has turned down a request from the PCB to tour Pakistan later this year for a T20I series because of security concerns. New Zealand are set to travel to the UAE to play Pakistan for a full tour that is likely to comprise three Tests, three ODIs and as many T20Is in October-November, even though the fixtures are not announced yet. The PCB had hoped to convince New Zealand to play the T20I leg of the tour in Pakistan.”At the end of the day it came down to following the advisory and the security reports we’d obtained.” NZC chairman Greg Barclay told . “There’s no doubt they (Pakistan Cricket Board) are disappointed. I think they saw a tour by a country like New Zealand as being a great precedent for them to start to build an international programme back in Pakistan.”So they’re disappointed but they’re good guys, we get on really well with Pakistan, and I think they’re fully accepting of the decision that we’ve reached.”NZC had received a request to tour Pakistan earlier this year and was going to consult with security providers, the government, and the players.Since the terror attack on the Sri Lanka team bus in 2009, Pakistan have played most of their home games in the UAE. Zimbabwe broke the deadlock in May 2015 when they toured for a short limited-overs series, which was marred by a blast near the Gaddafi Stadium.A World XI side led by Faf du Plessis, comprising a number of current internationals toured the country for three T20Is in September 2017. In April this year, a depleted West Indies squad also toured Pakistan for three T20Is in as many days. In between, Lahore and Karachi have hosted a few PSL matches.New Zealand last toured Pakistan in 2003, just a year after a suicide bombing outside their team hotel in Karachi had cut their tour short.”I can’t comment on the decision process that the West Indies went through, perhaps some of the timings may have been different as well,” Barclay said of West Indies’ decision to tour. “I just know that we went through a very thorough process and I’m comfortable with the decision that we got to.”We’re very sympathetic to the plight they find themselves in, we’re a member of the ICC, we’re very aware that the ICC are trying to facilitate more international cricket in Pakistan and we’re very supportive of that.”Although they were given three months to analyse the situation, NZC had not sent any of their representatives to Pakistan to conduct any personal checks.

West Ham ‘determined’ to sell player ‘as soon as possible’ as three clubs line up

West Ham are now very eager to sell one surplus player at the earliest opportunity, alongside the likes of Niclas Füllkrug and James Ward-Prowse, who are both nailed on for the exit door.

Fullkrug and Ward-Prowse set to leave West Ham next month

The Hammers are bracing themselves for significant January departures, with both Fullkrug and Ward-Prowse appearing certain to leave the London Stadium when the transfer window reopens.

Fullkrug’s disastrous spell looks destined to conclude after barely 18 months, with the German international having managed just three goals across 29 appearances since his £27m arrival from Borussia Dortmund in August 2024 (GiveMeSport).

The 31-year-old striker has been given official permission to leave by West Ham, with his agency ROOF formally notified that he can seek a January move (Sky Sports Germany via Claret and Hugh).

Fullkrug himself is keen to leave the club for pastures new with a decision already made, and Fabrizio Romano has backed up reports that the ex-Bundesliga star is poised for his final few weeks at the club.

Ward-Prowse has suffered an equally dramatic fall from grace under Nuno Espírito Santo, having been completely frozen out since the Portuguese manager’s September appointment.

The 30-year-old England international enjoyed an excellent debut season following his £30m transfer from Southampton in 2023, registering seven goals and eleven assists under David Moyes, but his form collapsed under subsequent managers Julen Lopetegui and Graham Potter.

Nuno and West Ham have already instructed the midfielder and his agents to seek new clubs in January, with both Everton and Southampton reportedly expressing interest.

Former manager Moyes wants to reunite with Ward-Prowse at Everton, according to ExWHUemployee, as both the midfielder and Fullkrug prepare to pack their bags and leave Rush Green next month.

There are other candidates for the exit door too, including Guido Rodriguez.

West Ham 'determined' to sell Rodriguez 'as soon as possible'

According to reports from Spain this week, West Ham are preparing to cut their losses on Rodriguez, with three La Liga clubs expressing interest in the struggling Argentine midfielder.

Guido Rodriguez

Rodriguez has endured a lacklustre spell since arriving at the London Stadium following his impressive performances at Real Betis.

The 31-year-old has managed just four appearances across all competitions this season, failing to establish himself under Nuno, and his lack of playing time has made a January departure increasingly inevitable.

The Hammers are actively facilitating his exit, with West Ham ‘determined’ to offload Rodriguez ‘as soon as possible’.

The World Cup winner needs to improve his chances of featuring in Argentina’s 2026 squad for the USA tournament, making a return to familiar territory in Spain particularly attractive.

Real Sociedad have emerged as serious contenders for his signature, with Girona also monitoring the situation closely after making an inquiry.

Villarreal are the third option, with Rodriguez viewed as an ideal addition to complement existing midfielders Dani Parejo and Santi Comesana.

West Ham face announcing record £100m losses in their December accounts, so Rodriguez’s departure would be very financially beneficial considering he’d count as pure profit in the eyes of PSR.

Tottenham in contact for "world-class" £47m maestro alongside Gibbs-White

da betsul: Tottenham Hotspur have now made an approach to sign a “world-class” midfielder, who could be in line to join alongside Morgan Gibbs-White, according to a report.

Spurs' Gibbs-White pursuit takes twist

da gbg bet: It appeared as though Tottenham were very close to getting a deal for Gibbs-White over the line, having triggered the £60m release clause in his contract, but the saga has recently taken a twist.

Nottingham Forest have now reported Spurs to the Premier League, with the Tricky Trees threatening legal action, as they believe an illegal approach was made for the midfielder, which means the deal has stalled.

However, Fabrizio Romano has since provided a positive update on the situation, with the transfer expert saying: “Tottenham maintain their position. They are convinced about their behaviour. They want to proceed with the deal, they want to sign the player. Nottingham Forest are prepared to fight. So, let’s see what’s going to happen there.

“But, for sure, the Gibbs-White deal now has an issue to be solved between the two clubs. That’s going to be one to watch in the coming days and hours, with Tottenham still hopeful and confident to get the player.”

Not only are the Lilywhites vying to sign a new attacking midfielder, but they are also keen on a more defensive option, and a report from GiveMeSport has revealed Spurs have also made an approach to sign Bayern Munich’s Joao Palhinha.

Tottenham have made initial contact over a deal for Palhinha, who joined the German club from Fulham in a deal worth around £47m last summer, and Daniel Levy is prepared to launch a bid if it becomes apparent the Portuguese midfielder is available.

It may take a sizeable bid to tempt Bayern into a sale, however, and the 30-year-old’s wage demands are likely to be high, considering he rakes in £200k-a-week at the Allianz Arena when bonuses are triggered.

"World-class" Palhinha could be ideal Spurs signing

Tottenham struggled defensively for large parts of the 2024-25 campaign, shipping 65 goals in the Premier League, and the Portugal international could provide some stability in midfield, given that he is exceptional at winning back possession.

Jobe scores first goal for DortmundJude responds with goal against PachucaOpens up about friendly rivalry with JobeFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Bellingham found the net in Real Madrid’s 3-1 win over Pachuca at the Club World Cup, just a day after his younger brother Jobe scored for Borussia Dortmund in their 4-3 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns. With Madrid down to 10 men, Jude delivered a clutch strike to help seal the win and match his brother’s effort. Jobe had scored on his first start for Dortmund after signing from Sunderland earlier this month, finding the net in the 45th minute to put his side 3-1 up before half-time. It was a moment that sparked a bit of friendly sibling rivalry, and Jude has now responded.

Asked whether Jobe’s goal was on his mind during his own performance, Jude said to DAZN: "My brother’s goal yesterday on my mind? A little bit, I’ve gotta be honest. Everyone’s been caning me, saying he’s better than me. I had to do something today. We’re 1-1 now, we’ll see for the rest of the tournament (laughs).”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Bellingham brothers have made history by becoming the first siblings to score in the same edition of the Club World Cup. The performances from both have drawn lighthearted comparisons, with friends teasing Jude after Jobe’s goal. Now, both stars are level with a goal apiece as they head into their final group-stage matches.

GettyWHAT NEXT FOR THE BELLINGHAM BROTHERS?

Jude and Real Madrid face RB Salzburg on June 26 to close out their group stage, while Jobe and Dortmund take on Ulsan on June 25. Both brothers will be eyeing the knockout rounds, and potentially a once-in-a-lifetime clash on the world stage against each other.

'We want to play an expansive brand of cricket'

Coach Russell Domingo talks about South Africa’s recovery from the slump they fell into in 2015-16, and what he expects from the coming year

Firdose Moonda15-Jan-2017South Africa have now won three consecutive Test series and sit at No. 3 on the Test rankings. Has the tide turned completely after last summer?
It’s the start of a new era for this team after the trials and tribulations of the past year or so, but we are not the finished article. There is still room for improvement in every department. The next year is a big year for us. We’ve got our rankings back up but we’ve still got work to do. There’s no way we can be complacent after three series.Which areas, specifically, do you want to concentrate on?
Consistency with the bat. Dean Elgar has stepped up in this series with a hundred and two scores over fifty. Before that, there hasn’t been a hot streak amongst one our batters. We are slowly getting there. It’s about trying to get two or three hundreds per series per player. We also have a new bowling attack and we need to find the best balance in our bowling attack.

“South African cricket has got more challenges than most other nations in the world. In terms of finances, in terms of Kolpaks, in terms of the make-up of the team. Yet, we always tend to find ourselves in the top three more times than not, in all formats”

How would you like to see this Test team progress?
We want to play a positive brand of cricket. We want to play an expansive brand of cricket. It will be clichéd to say “fearless”. When opportunities arise, we want to seize the initiative and rather err on the positive than the conservative, and we want to continue to grow that. We are going to make mistakes. Someone is going to get caught on the boundary and you are all going to say, “What the hell is he doing, how can he play that shot?” But that’s cool. That’s the way we want to try and play our cricket. Are you happy with the way the openers have performed?
If you want to have a quality Test team, you need a quality opening partnership and we definitely seem to be moving that way at the moment. Stephen Cook and Dean have got a good thing going. They complement each other really well. They are both gutsy players. The way they played on the first morning here [at the Wanderers] was wonderful. They only put on 45, but it felt like a hundred because of the nature of the wicket. Are these the kinds of pitches you would like to see used for home series?

It depends on who you are playing against. If you are playing against Australia, who are historically not a great team on slower wickets, you might want to play more on coastal conditions. If you are playing a subcontinent team , you want to play them on these types of wickets. In six Tests this season, against Australia and Sri Lanka, Dean Elgar has made 469 runs, with two hundreds and two fifties•AFPAre you concerned about Temba Bavuma’s form?

When the team is winning there’s always going to be one batter that’s struggling for form. That’s just the nature of Test batting. Three Tests ago, Temba probably won the game with Quinton de Kock in Hobart, when he got that wonderful 70-odd and set the game up for us in tough conditions. A Test before that, he also got runs when we were 60 [81] for 5. It’s the nature of international cricket. You can’t have all six or all seven of your batters firing at the same time. When one batter is struggling, it’s important that the other guys contribute. The depth of the talent pool was under scrutiny, not only after injuries to bowlers last year but also because of the spate of Kolpak signings. Are you happy with the resources at your disposal?
South Africa are blessed in that we seem to produce really good cricketers. I have been speaking to the Under-19 coaches and there are some high-quality players in the U-19 side now, who, in a couple of years, can progress to the national side the way a Quinton de Kock or Kagiso Rabada did. We are very fortunate that we have a good schooling system that can produce the young players.Do you think there was an overreaction to the troubles of last summer?

I was saying to someone the other day, and I am not comparing, but South African cricket has got more challenges than most other nations in the world. That’s the truth. In terms of finances, in terms of Kolpaks, in terms of the make-up of the team. That’s just the way it is. Other teams maybe don’t have to deal with it. A team like England. Yet, we always tend to find ourselves in the top three more times than not, in all formats. There’s a lot to be appreciative of about the way South African cricket operates and the way the players go about their business. Not many teams face the sort of challenges we face. Maybe the public at times just expect you to be No. 1 at absolutely everything and it’s just not possible when old, mature, experienced, high-quality players leave and potentially talented players come into the team. The likes of Quinton de Kock, Temba Bavuma, Kagiso Rabada and Stephen Cook, to a certain degree, take a little bit of time before they get to that level. Some of those guys are now getting to that level and that’s why the team is performing better.

“There are some high-quality players in the U-19 side now, who, in a couple of years, can progress to the national side the way a Quinton de Kock or Kagiso Rabada did”

Did you think there was a chance you would lose your job?

I could go tomorrow. Nothing is certain. I by no means look too far ahead in my coaching career. I take it one series at a time. You never know what’s around the corner in coaching. I’ve always felt that the support that I’ve got from the players is the most important thing. If you’ve still got the support of the players, that’s all that matters. I’ve always felt I had that. It’s out of my control, what happens happens. We often talk about the players’ schedules and how packed those are, but coaches are also on the road for long periods of time. We’ve seen Australia give Darren Lehmann a break and split the responsibility. Would you also like some time off?

I am going home for two nights after this Test because if I didn’t go home for these two nights, I might only have had one or two nights until April 4, but when I get back here Tuesday, I am really excited by the group of players I am going to be working with. I am not going to be seeing Faf [du Plessis], JP [Duminy], Hashim [Amla], KG [Rabada]. There are going to be 13 completely new players in the T20 series. They will be so hungry and so desperate to make an impression for South African cricket. And that’s exciting for us. I’ve told our coaches, “Boys, we’ve got to have our A game here because it’s like first day of school for a lot of these guys.” They are so desperate to play for their country and it’s exciting for me to get to work with those types of players.

Explainer – Why the BCCI changed its stance on DRS

Higher frame rates for cameras and a safeguard to prevent operator error were the key improvements in technology that led to the BCCI agreeing to trial the system

Nagraj Gollapudi21-Oct-2016Despite winning the 2011 World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy with DRS in place, India had resisted using the system in bilateral series. On Wednesday the ICC general manager Geoff Allardice and a representative from Hawk-Eye, the ball-tracking technology provider, met top BCCI officials along with India coach Anil Kumble in Delhi.Allardice focused on the independent assessment of the technologies used in the DRS, which was carried out by engineers from the field-intelligence unit at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology [MIT]. The Hawk-Eye presentation explained how ball-tracking technology has been enhanced over the last couple of years. The upshot of the meeting was that two days later India agreed to use the DRS on a trial basis during the Test series against England. Here’s an explainer of what their concerns were and how they were allayed. Why did the BCCI not want the DRS?
The main reason was a mistrust of the ball-tracking technology used to adjudge lbws. The BCCI said the predicted path after the ball hit the pad was not reliable. How does ball-tracking work?
Three elements go into an lbw decision: where the ball pitched, the point of impact on the pad, and the predicted path towards the stumps. The accuracy of the predicted path of the ball depends on the number of images captured – the frame-rate – between the ball pitching and hitting the pad. What is the most significant change in the technology?
Cameras with a higher frame rate, and the ability to locate the point of impact on the pad more accurately. The Tests against England will be India’s second bilateral series with all aspects of the DRS•Getty ImagesHow fast are the frame rates now?
During the 2011 World Cup, the frame rate of Hawk-Eye’s cameras was 50 to 75 frames per second. Hawk-Eye’s ultra-motion cameras recorded images at a faster rate in 2013, and their current ball-tracking cameras record images at 340 frames per second. How will a higher frame rate help? It provides a lot more data and hence the calculation of the predicted path of the ball is more accurate. “The increased frame rate has allowed the accuracy of the prediction to tighten up significantly,” an official privy to Wednesday’s presentation said. “It means between the ball pitching and the ball hitting the pad there is more information available to go into building a prediction. That was something reinforced by the recent testing of the accuracy of a prediction, when compared to the accuracy of a ball that has not been intercepted.”Why did the BCCI have an issue with the location of the point of impact?
When judging the point where the ball hits the pad, a key factor is to make sure the ball has not changed path. The BCCI had said there was potential for operator error while identifying the point of impact. How was that issue solved?
Hawk-Eye created Ultra Edge to remove that problem. Ultra Edge is a sound based, edge-detection system can identify the point of impact more accurately. When there is a sound of ball hitting pad or bat, it can identify the frame in which the ball hits the pad. What if the operator misses the ball? How will they locate point of impact?
Hawk-Eye has added another safeguard to its system: data from every delivery is recorded and can be retrieved in case it’s needed to build a predicted path of the delivery.

A Yorkshire fantasy

Two successive Championships and a strong White Rose flavour to the national side and already they are wondering in the Broad Acres whether Yorkshire would beat England

Alan Gardner22-Sep-2015During the 2012 Olympics it became a popular exercise to work out where Yorkshire would be on the medal table if it were an independent country. For a good stretch of the Games they were ahead of Australia and, to general delight in the Broad Acres, the efforts of Jessica Ennis, Nicola Adams and the Brownlee brothers saw Yorkshire finish a very respectable (and entirely theoretical) 12th.That same summer, Jason Gillespie got started on the business of reviving Yorkshire cricket. Relegation in 2011 had provoked another famous Yorkshire characteristic: plain speaking. Colin Graves, the club’s chairman, called performances a “disgrace”, and although what followed was hardly the doldrums – a year in Division Two, during which they were unbeaten – it was easier to express pride in Yorkshire’s Olympians than their cricketers.Three years on and Yorkshire have celebrated back-to-back Championship titles for the first time since the 1960s, when God’s Own County seemingly had a divine right to the trophy. To the surprise of no one, Yorkshiremen all over the land are rather happy again. Their bubble may have been burst by defeat at Lord’s three days after retaining the pennant – thus allowing Yorkshire supporters the existential ambrosia of being able to crow and grumble at the same time – but by then the nationhood question had raised its flat-capped head once again.Essentially, could Yorkshire beat England?Club-versus-country arguments in English cricket have become less vociferous since the advent of central contracts but the rumblings were there at the start of the season, when six Yorkshire players were whisked off to the Caribbean just as the Championship began. To make matters worse, England only deigned to pick three of them against West Indies. In all, Yorkshire donated seven of their number to the national team over the summer but shrugged off such privations (eventually) to win the title with two and a half games to spare.Where would Yorkshire rank as a Test nation, asked the agents provocateur excitedly on Twitter. Joe Root had led the way with the bat as England regained the Ashes but what if he swapped his brilliant-whites for the White Rose and took guard against Jimmy and Broady? It is here we move back into the realms of the hypothetical. England would clearly have to allow the likes of Root, Jonny Bairstow and Adil Rashid to turn out for their county – you might say they began the process this summer by unceremoniously handing back Adam Lyth and Gary Ballance – but who would take their places? And where would the match be played? Headingley would only provide one of the two with home advantage, while Lord’s, the only place Yorkshire have lost over the last couple of years, seems the natural counterbalance. Perhaps the Midlands could host a series decider.England actually lined up against county opposition in recent years, generally avoiding embarrassment during drawn Ashes warm-up matches, against Warwickshire in 2009 and Essex in 2013. This would not be quite the same as making a few runs against Naqaash Tahir or struggling to dismiss Jaik Mickleburgh, however. Many feel that Ryan Sidebottom is still wily enough to perform in Tests and he would surely give Alastair Cook, who is regularly troubled by left-arm seam, a thorough working over. Rashid has not yet been trusted at that level, but given how often English batsmen have been befuddled by legspin over the years, he would have a decent chance of upstaging Moeen Ali.While the first-class stats of England’s Yorkshire replacements in the batting order* – Alex Hales, James Taylor and James Vince – stand up to scrutiny, the inclusion of all three in the Test side would perhaps best be described as experimental. And while Jos Buttler is the England incumbent behind the stumps, Jonny Bairstow’s 1071 Championship runs at an average of more than 100 suggests Yorkshire would have the form man.Yorkshire can rely on passionate support at Headingley, as Gary Ballance can testify•Getty ImagesShould James Hildreth get a mention? Who decided to drop Steven Finn? Could Yorkshire still field an overseas player? These are all imponderables that I am going to ask here before you do.It’s unfortunate, at least in the matter of petty parochial rivalries, that there is only one Lancastrian in the England XI – though Jimmy Anderson would happily wage a War of the Roses on his own. This selection also features a broad mix of north and south, which might produce an inclusive and harmonious environment that blends together the best aspects of the United Kingdom; or quite possibly see their weak regional bonds torn apart by the juggernaut belligerence of England’s largest county. Then again, as David Cameron alluded to in his surprisingly astute/gravely offensive (delete as preferred) comments about Yorkshire folk last week, membership of the White Rose is hardly a guarantee of unity. Both the Yorkshire committee and the ECB seem to have put the infighting behind them but the chances of the cricket not being overshadowed by a barney must be minimal during what many are already calling the hold-a-grudge match.Anyway, the lobbying for this fixture to replace the MCC-Champion County match at the start of the season begins here. The only thing that we can agree on is total disagreement. You can, of course, have your druthers below.*As selected on last week’s county blogEngland (probable) 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Alex Hales, 3 Ian Bell, 4 James Taylor, 5 James Vince, 6 Ben Stokes, 7 Jos Buttler, 8 Moeen Ali, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Mark Wood, 11 James AndersonYorkshire (probable) 1 Adam Lyth, 2 Alex Lees, 3 Gary Ballance, 4 Joe Root, 5 Andrew Gale (capt), 6 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 7 Adil Rashid, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Liam Plunkett, 10 Jack Brooks, 11 Ryan Sidebottom
