Arsenal: Arteta could boldly drop "exceptional" Gunners maestro alongside Raya

Arsenal are back in action this evening, as Mikel Arteta’s side look to right their wrongs in the Champions League against Sevilla.

The Gunners face a trip to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium in their third fixture of Group B, and will hope to hunt down RC Lens who currently top the group after beating Arteta’s side last time out.

The loss to Lens broke Arsenal’s undefeated start to the 2023/24 campaign, with the north Londoners poised for another challenge in Europe this evening.

What is the latest Arsenal team news?

Not only will the Gunners hope to turn their form around in the Champions League, but also in general, after being held to a 2-2 draw against Chelsea in the Premier League in their most recent fixture.

It was a dull performance by the north Londoners' standards at Stamford Bridge, calling for an improved showing in Seville tonight in order to take back control in the group.

Against Chelsea, goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was absent from the squad due to the birth of his child, however, the Englishman is set to return to the fold as confirmed by Arteta during his pre-match press conference.

The 25-year-old could even find himself with a role greater than being on the bench, after David Raya’s questionable performance against the Blues raised questions over the rotation of Arsenal’s shot-stoppers.

The Spaniard recorded one error that led to a shot, as well as being criticised for his positioning for Mykhailo Mudryk’s goal that gave the hosts the lead in the second half.

Raya was described as having a “terrible time” by journalist Joe Prince-Wright during the London derby, however he wasn’t the only player from the favoured XI to have a poor outing at Stamford Bridge.

Should Martin Odegaard start against Sevilla?

Usually Arsenal’s saviour, captain Martin Odegaard was far from his best against the Blues, as highlighted by his mere 36 touches and losing possession 11 times in midfield.

Once lauded as “exceptional” by Pep Guardiola, the Norwegian maintained a pass completion rate of just 80% against the Blues, and failed to record a single shot to tell the tale of his anonymous display in west London.

In form that’s unusual for the £240k-per-week ace, Odegaard was also far from impressive against Lens last time out in the Champions League, somewhat decreasing his claim to a spot in the starting XI against Sevilla.

martin-odegaard-arsenal-Henrikh-Mykhitaryan-as-roma-transfer-arteta-edu

Against the French outfit, the midfielder was again a backseat passenger for Arsenal, recording only 49 touches and losing possession nine times, raising the question of whether rotation could inspire him to rediscover his form.

Arteta isn’t short of personnel that could thrive if he made the bold decision to drop Odegaard this evening, with the likes of Emile Smith-Rowe and Fabio Vieira queuing for the chance to showcase their skills in the starting lineup.

It would be a critically bold move for Arteta to drop his captain, however, Odegaard’s performances of late have been questionable, and most commonly the key to unlocking past form is healthy competition.

Arsenal need a win tonight, and the Spaniard has several decisions to make with reference to his squad choices after the mediocre performance against Chelsea last weekend.

Wait for Real Madrid! – Xabi Alonso told he should reject Liverpool's offer to replace Jurgen Klopp and aim to succeed Carlo Ancelotti instead

Xabi Alonso has been advised to wait for Real Madrid vacancy and reject Liverpool's offer to replace Jurgen Klopp.

  • Klopp to leave Liverpool in the summer
  • Alonso approached to replace German
  • Ex-chief says he should choose Madrid
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Alonso finds himself at the centre of a managerial tug-of-war as he navigates his next career move. With Klopp set to depart Liverpool at the end of the season, Alonso has emerged as a frontrunner to take over the reins at Anfield.

His successful stint at Bayer Leverkusen has catapulted him into the spotlight of top European clubs. Leading Leverkusen to the top of the Bundesliga has not only garnered attention from Liverpool but also from Bayern Munich, who are in search of a new manager as well as Thomas Tuchel's tenure will also end in June.

    WHAT REINER CALMUND SAID

Former Leverkusen chief Reiner Calmund believes Alonso should resist the urge to rush back to Anfield, keep his focus on continuing his learning curve at BayArena and instead wait for Carlo Ancelotti's departure from Real Madrid.

When asked should Alonso leave for Liverpool, he told : "I don't think Alonso would do that. Of course this is a good option. Alonso won the Champions League with Liverpool and he won the championship three times with Bayern. There is no doubt that these are extremely interesting employers. We also have to wait and see what happens at Real Madrid, whether Ancelotti might quit sooner. As his agent, I wouldn't necessarily advise him to go to Liverpool as Klopp's successor. I would recommend that he stay in Leverkusen for another year or two and then maybe replace Ancelotti."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Calmund further insisted that Alonso would stay at Leverkusen next season, adding: "There is a lot of writing going on. You shouldn't believe everything. I don't want to be the dream dancer here, but I firmly assume that Alonso will be the coach at Leverkusen next season. He won everything as a player, including the Champions League with Real Madrid. Ancelotti has extended his contract with Los Blancos. There is no danger at the moment."

    WHAT NEXT?

While the allure of returning to a former club like Liverpool is strong, seasoned voices are advocating for a more measured approach, urging Alonso to consider his long-term career trajectory rather than succumbing to immediate temptations. As the managerial merry-go-round continues to spin, Alonso finds himself at a crossroads. However, in the short term, he remains committed to Leverkusen who are on a dream run of 35 unbeaten games and are leading the Bundesliga title charge. His next assignment is against Wolfsburg on Sunday evening.

Rayner answers Hampshire's spin crisis

Ollie Rayner has a chance to discover some form after losing his Middlesex place to Ravi Patel

George Dobell19-Jun-2018Ollie Rayner has joined Hampshire from Middlesex on a short-term loan deal.Hampshire are currently without leg-spinner Mason Crane (who has suffered a recurrence of back pain as he recovers from a stress
fracture), off-spinner Brad Taylor (who has an ankle injury) and will shortly lose left-arm spinner, Liam Dawson, to England Lions duty.Off-spinner Rayner – good enough to claim 50 Championship wickets when Middlesex won the Championship in 2016 and win a place in the Lions side – will therefore provide spin-bowling cover for the upcoming Championship matches against Yorkshire (starting on Wednesday) and Lancashire (starting on Monday). It shows, however, that Rayner has dropped out of the Middlesex first team for the moment. After a trying start to the season – Rayner has
claimed four wickets in five Championship matches for Middlesex this season at an average of 64.50 – he has lost his place to the left-arm
spinner, Ravi Patel. The loan deal lasts a month but Middlesex can recall him at any time if their needs change.”It’s great that Angus Fraser and Middlesex have allowed him to come to us and he’ll play a part in the next couple of Championship games,”
Giles White, the Hamphiire director of cricket, said. “He’s a good bowler and has done well for Middlesex over the years. He bats and
catches well at second slip too so it’s a good fit for us.”Hampshire are currently in seventh position in Division One in need of a victory or two to lift them away from relegation fears. Middlesex
are seventh in Division Two and struggling to sustain the promotion challenge that most anticipated. Both sides have just the one
Championship victory so far this season.”I’m obviously disappointed to not be featuring in the forthcoming round of Championship matches for Middlesex,” Rayner said. “However
when one door closes, another one opens, and I’ve now got a great opportunity to go and play some first eleven cricket with Hampshire.””As with a lot of loan agreements this is a win-win situation for both Middlesex and Ollie,” the club’s Director of Cricket, Angus Fraser,
said. “Having chosen to pick Ravi Patel ahead of Ollie this week, Ollie was extremely keen to play some first-class cricket, and
Hampshire’s predicament has allowed this to happen.”Should Middlesex’s situation change we have the right to recall Ollie to the club.”

India rise to No. 1 in ODI rankings

South Africa have moved down a spot, to No. 2, after losing the ongoing ODI series against India

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Feb-2018After winning their first bilateral series in South Africa, India have climbed to the top of the ODI rankings for the third time in six months. India overtook South Africa – who will finish the ongoing series ranked second – after beating them by 73 runs in the fourth ODI in Port Elizabeth. India are also the top-ranked Test team.India had become the No. 1 ODI side after taking a 2-0 lead in the series, but had to win four of six matches to retain that ranking after the series. If India win the final ODI, they will finish with 123 rankings points, and South Africa with 117. South Africa had to either tie or win the ODI series against India to stay at the top of the rankings.India’s series win means England could move past South Africa, to No. 2, if they beat New Zealand 5-0 in the upcoming ODI series. Afghanistan, meanwhile, have also climbed past Zimbabwe to No. 10 on the ODI rankings after winning the third ODI in Sharjah on Tuesday, but will have to win the series to retain that position.

The Richarlison replacement at Spurs who’s scoring once every 37 mins on loan

da supremo: Tottenham losing Harry Kane could have seen Spurs completely collapse, especially with a new manager at the helm in Ange Postecoglou who had zero Premier League experience as a head coach before taking on the job.

da betway: Yet, fast forward to ten games into the new top-flight campaign, Postecoglou's appointment has been a stroke of genius with the likes of Heung-min Son stepping up to the mark more than ever to fill in for their former star man leaving for Bayern Munich.

Still unbeaten with eight wins and two draws in the league, the South Korean forward's importance has intensified for Spurs – scoring eight times in these ten flawless matches, Kane's move to Bavaria pushed now to one side.

But, the high-flying morth Londoners would be threadbare in attack if Son was to pull up with a long-term injury.

Richarlison is another option as is new summer signing Alejo Veliz, yet Spurs could have a gem in their ranks who has been with the club since 2017 and could eventually displace both the Brazilian and Argentinian as the preferred back-up option.

Richarlison's numbers this season

An unsettled figure at Spurs under previous Tottenham head coach Antonio Conte – with the Italian routinely "scolding" the ex-Everton man after he asked for more game-time per an interview with talkSPORT – the 26-year-old has been granted his wish now under new boss Postecoglou to start more matches.

It doesn't mean the goals have followed suit, however, the Brazilian attacker only netting two goals so far for Spurs in all competitions.

Tottenham striker Richarlison.

His overall performances haven't been anything to write home about either, a 64-minute spell last time out against Crystal Palace saw Spurs' number nine trudge off disappointed with his own display at Selhurst Park – only winning two of ten ground duels on the night via Sofascore, alongside his only shot being dragged wide.

Costing Tottenham a sizeable £60m when arriving from Everton, his five goals and seven assists in total so far for Spurs do not justify this transfer fee from 46 games played.

It could leave Postecoglou searching for other players within his group to play up top, with 21-year-old Dublin-born striker Troy Parrott tipped for greatness.

Spurs' future Richarlison replacement

Scoring one goal every 37 minutes currently out on loan in the Netherlands, Parrott is certainly one to watch from a Tottenham perspective if Richarlison continues to misfire.

A journeyman in terms of the number of clubs he's starred with on loan – Excelsior Rotterdam is his current home, with the Irishman also featuring in the EFL with Milton Keynes Dons, Millwall and more – he'll hope and pray that his time to break into the Spurs first time mould comes soon.

Postecoglou will be keeping tabs on his player whilst he's an Excelsior loanee for sure, especially with Parrott's current goalscoring exploits in the Dutch first division.

He has three goals from seven appearances for his new Rotterdam-based outfit, often scoring late on as an impact substitute.

It would only take the Spurs prodigy 18 minutes against Pec Zwolle to score, the 21-year-old left unmarked from a free-kick to fire home in an unfortunate 4-2 loss.

Tottenham could do with more bodies in attack, and in Parrott, they have an energetic, clinical goalscorer who could be more than ready for a first-team berth over Richarlison if he continues to shine at senior level on loan.

Approach made: Brighton present offer to sign £16m left-footed midfielder

da bwin: After a sensational campaign last time out, which ended with Europa League qualification, Brighton & Hove Albion have picked up where they left off this season, already defeating both Manchester United and Newcastle United during the current Premier League campaign.

da heads bet: Their strong start to the season comes despite the departures of both Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister, who swapped Brighton for Chelsea and Liverpool respectively during the summer transfer window. As ever, Roberto De Zerbi's side have been unphased by the exits, simply filling the gaps and continuing their unexpected rise.

Things could get even better in January, too, with reports suggesting that the Seagulls have made an approach to sign another South American gem when the winter transfer window swings open.

What's the latest Brighton transfer news?

During the summer transfer window, Brighton spent a reported €101m (£88m) on reinforcements, welcoming the likes of Joao Pedro and Bart Verbruggen, who have both played their part already this season.

It could be argued that they never really replaced Caicedo, though, perhaps giving themselves something to think about in January, especially with games coming thick and fast now that they have European commitments to balance alongside Premier League action.

With that said, according to reports in Spain, via Caught Offside, Brighton have presented an offer to Boca Juniors for Ezequiel Fernandez. The Argentine club have reportedly placed a £16m price-tag on the defensive midfielder, potentially giving De Zerbi and co plenty to think about.

If Fernandez did make the move, he would be following in the footsteps of fellow South Americans Mac Allister, Caicedo, and Julio Enciso, just to name a few who have enjoyed great success at The Amex. So, when January comes around, it will be interesting to see whether Brighton push ahead and continue their transfer trend, replacing Caicedo in the process.

Who is Ezequiel Fernandez?

At just 21 years of age, Fernandez, who can play as a holding or central midfielder, is already playing an impressive role for Boca Juniors, making 32 appearances in all competitions last season, reportedly attracting the interest of Brighton as a result.

Earning high praise, journalist Tim Vickery wrote for ESPN about Fernandez back in May:

"There are similarities between Enzo and Ezequiel Fernandez (even if no direct relation). Enzo's career gained momentum with a loan spell, so did Ezequiel's, who spent last year at Tigre.

"Both are central midfielders. Ezequiel, who turns 21 next month, is left-footed and bristling with quality. In an interview with TyC Sports in Argentina, World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister recently suggested that Brighton snap him up.

"Ezequiel might need careful handling. The youngster is still raw and erratic, and after the arrival of new coach Jorge Almiron he has spent much of his time as a second-half substitute. But the potential is undeniable, and this year's Libertadores is an excellent opportunity to cast an eye on the development of a fascinating talent."

With that said, it will be interesting to see whether Brighton have discovered another key player, should they push on and secure the signature of Fernandez in the January transfer window. The Seagulls are certainly in need of a defensive midfielder.

Aston Villa ready talks to sign £18m forward and may use Malen in swap deal

Aston Villa are planning talks to complete the signing of a “fantastic” player with a huge future, with Donyell Malen potentially part of the deal.

Aston Villa want Douglas Luiz reunion

The Villans continue to work hard on new signings ahead of the upcoming Premier League season, as they look to push on and get back into the Champions League.

Arguably the most intriguing current Villa-related transfer story has seen them linked with a move for former midfielder Douglas Luiz, with the Brazilian seemingly allowed to leave Juventus this summer.

Luiz was a popular figure during his first stint at Villa Park, bagging 46 goal contributions in 204 appearances from the middle of the park, and Unai Emery described him as a “very important” figure. For that reason, he could love the idea of bringing him back to the club this summer.

Elsewhere, Barcelona forward Ferran Torres has been linked with a move to Villa before next season gets started, with the Spaniard not a key man at the Camp Nou. He has Premier League experience from his time at Manchester City, and he could add much-needed firepower, potentially even replacing Ollie Watkins at the heart of Emery’s attack.

Aston Villa ready talks for "fantastic" £18m forward

According to a new report from Aksam [via Sport Witness], Aston Villa are interested in signing Besiktas star Semih Kilicsoy this summer, with talks planned over a possible move to the club. The likes of Newcastle United and Leeds United have also been mentioned as suitors for the 19-year-old recently, who could be on the move for around £18m.

It is also claimed that Malen could head in the opposite direction as part of a swap deal, with the Dutchman falling out of favour at Villa Park.

Kilicsoy is a player with a big future in the game, having already achieved plenty at the age of 19, becoming an important figure for Besiktas.

The young centre forward has 16 goals in 85 appearances at senior level for his current side – he netted an impressive 42 times in 64 outings for the Under-19s – and football talent scout Jacek Kulig has described him as “fantastic” in the past.

While Kilicsoy isn’t yet the finished article, given his tender years, he could be a great squad signing for Villa from the off, before maturing into more of a star figure as the years pass.

Big McGinn upgrade: Aston Villa make contact to sign £138k-p/w "engine"

Aston Villa are set to target a new midfielder this summer

    ByJoe Nuttall Jul 9, 2025

If the Villans were able to sign him and a more experienced striker this summer, it will stand them in good stead moving forward, especially if Watkins moves on to pastures new.

"Sold to Chelsea" – Journalist claims Boehly has already agreed signing

Chelsea may have already agreed a signing ahead of January with the west Londoners looking like they've closed in on a target.

Pochettino angry after latest Chelsea loss

Just when supporters thought Chelsea may have been turning a corner, manager Mauricio Pochettino watched on from the sidelines as his side succumbed to a 4-1 hammering at Newcastle. Goals from Alexander Isak, Jamaal Lascelles, Joelinton and Anthony Gordon gifted Eddie Howe's side an afternoon to remember at St. James' Park with Chelsea sent crashing right back down to Earth after a previously solid run of form.

The Blues appear to still have a lot of work to do before they're considered among the Premier League's elite sides once again, with Pochettino lambasting his "soft" team after the game.

"Even if Newcastle weren't great, it was an easy win for them to prepare for the Champions League. We had to show that it's going to be difficult for them to play, to win the game and to beat us," said Pochettino on Chelsea's loss to Newcastle.

"But it was really easy in the way that we conceded and the way that we were so soft in every single challenge.

"That's what makes me angry and disappointed. We talk about being a young team and we have to learn, but I think these type of games make me very, very, very, very, very angry because it's about showing your personality and character. OK, we are young as a team, but we cannot lose this type of opportunity to show our best."

Off the field, chairman Todd Boehly and his co-directors are said to be getting busy as they attempt to strengthen Pochettino's options with more signings.

    Chelsea reportedly agree Moscardo deal

According to a report by Brazilian journalist Neto, via Vessoni, Corinthians starlet Gabriel Moscardo is on his way to Chelsea after the two clubs agreed a fee of around £23 million. The 18-year-old is seen as a rising star in Brazil, and it will be interesting to see if this report comes to any fruition and backed by sources closer to home in the next few days.

Moscardo is a midfielder with "eye-catching" dribbling ability, with members of the media saying as much about the teenage talent.

"Studious off the pitch, Moscardo seems to have a high footballing IQ on it, too," wrote GOAL journalist Krishan Davis on the teenager.

    Gabriel Moscardo for Santos.

"As a defensive midfielder, he is predictably astute at reading the game, he passes precisely and he presses and battles tirelessly – a result of his youth but also testament to his stamina.

"His ball-carrying ability is particularly eye-catching, as he is able to progress play with the ball at his feet without discarding his defensive duties. That is undoubtedly an attribute that has led to him catching the eye of Europe's elite."

However, while he is a player of incredible potential, it remains to be seen whether Chelsea view him as one to compete for first team chances or more as one for the future.

Leeds: Whites had mare over 2023 exit with more G/A than Summerville this year

Leeds United endured a dismal 2022/23 campaign as they were relegated from the Premier League after three seasons at the top level.

The Whites were promoted under Marcelo Bielsa in 2020 and enjoyed two seasons of survival before eventually going down under a combination of Jesse Marsch, Javi Gracia, and Sam Allardyce.

They are now back in the Championship and are looking to return to the top-flight at the first time of asking, with German head coach Daniel Farke at the helm.

    Leeds boss Daniel Farke.

Leeds brought the former Norwich City and Borussia Monchengladbach boss in to bolster their chances of promotion and he has enjoyed a strong start to life in Yorkshire, with five wins and two defeats in 11 league outings.

A drop down to the second tier has afforded a number of players the opportunity to regain form and confidence at a lower level and one ace who could have benefitted from that was central midfielder Mateusz Klich, who left the club in January.

The Poland international moved on at the start of the year and former Whites boss Marsch seemingly had a mare with his decision to part ways with the talented gem, as he has more goals and assists than some of the club's current attackers – like Crysencio Summerville – this year.

How much did Leeds sell Klich for?

Leeds did not receive a single penny in return for Klich as they opted to release him from his contract, despite having 18 months left to run on his deal at the time.

Marsch stated that it was a mutual decision as the club allowed the central midfielder to move on from the then-Premier League side for £0 after he had made 14 top-flight appearances during the first half of the campaign.

The veteran maestro was then able to complete a transfer to D.C. United, who were managed by Wayne Rooney at the time of the move, on a free transfer in January.

How many goals did Klich score for Leeds?

He racked up 24 goals in 195 appearances for the Whites in all competitions during his time in England, which began after a switch from FC Twente ahead of the 2017/18 campaign.

The 33-year-old dynamo spent time on loan with FC Utrecht in his first season with Leeds before making his breakthrough as a regular under Bielsa the following term.

Klich exploded onto the scene with a phenomenal 2018/19 campaign as the club fell just shy of the play-off final. He contributed with ten goals and eight assists in 46 Championship starts from a midfield position.

The Polish whiz only missed two 'big chances' and created nine of them for his teammates, which shows that he was ruthless in front of goal and had the quality to provide his fellow attackers with excellent opportunities at the top end of the pitch.

He followed that up with six goals and five assists in 45 league starts throughout the 2019/20 season as Bielsa led the side to a Championship title and promotion to the Premier League. Klich only recorded five assists in spite of ending the campaign with ten 'big chances' created, which suggests that his teammates let him down in the final third.

The former Twente ace was then able to make the step up to the top-flight as he chipped in with four goals and five assists in 28 starts in his first year at that level.

After 18 more months in the Premier League with Leeds, Klich moved on from England with 24 goals and 21 assists in his 195 appearances.

How has Klich performed for D.C. United?

The 33-year-old gem has enjoyed a fantastic year in the MLS since his switch to America in January, with a string of impressive performances in midfield.

Klich has hit the ground running for D.C. United and has proved himself to be a consistent attacking threat from the middle of the park.

The veteran wizard has contributed with four goals and seven assists in 32 MLS outings throughout 2023, which shows that the talented ace is getting back to the impressive form that he displayed under Bielsa earlier in his Leeds career.

He has only missed one 'big chance' and has showcased his terrific creativity with 2.5 key passes per game, as per Sofascore, and no Leeds player has managed more per match this term.

How many goals has Summerville scored this year?

Meanwhile, Summerville has scored three goals for Leeds over the course of 2023, whilst playing in the Premier League and the Championship.

He racked up one goal and one assist in 19 appearances in all competitions from January until the end of the 2022/23 campaign as the Dutch ace struggled to find consistency at the top level.

    Leeds forward Crysencio Summerville.

The 21-year-old wizard has contributed with two goals and two assists in nine outings so far this season under Farke, which mean that he has produced three goals and three assists in 28 matches in total this year.

This is five fewer goal contributions than Klich, who plays in a central midfield role, has managed in 2023, despite playing out on the wing.

Summerville is not the only Leeds attacker with fewer goals and assists than the Poland international in that time, though, as Italian winger Wilfried Gnonto has three goal and five assists in 28 games in all competitions for Leeds this year.

Was it a mistake to move Klich on?

These statistics suggest that Marsch had a mare by allowing Klich, who Rooney hailed as a "leader", to move on from the club on a free transfer in January as the talented maestro could have been a big player at Championship level this season.

His form in the MLS suggests that the 33-year-old technician still has the quality to make a big impact at the top end of the pitch from a midfield position, with goals, assists, and key passes.

He has been able to outperform exciting attackers like Summerville and Gnonto throughout 2023 and it is a shame that Farke did not get the opportunity to work with the former Eredivisie star at Elland Road this term.
