Newcastle United are set to speak with the agents of a £60m-rated player who’s one of the best ball-playing defenders in world football, according to a new transfer rumour.

It’s all go at St James’ Park at the moment, with plenty of drama surrounding the relationship between manager Eddie Howe and sporting director Paul Mitchell. The pair have reportedly failed to see eye to eye since the latter arrived from Monaco in the summer, following a frustrating transfer window.

It remains to be seen whether the duo can patch up their differences and enjoy a good working relationship, but if things continue the way they are, it is difficult to see both men remaining in their respective roles for much longer. Howe finds himself under an element of pressure after a slightly disappointing start to the season, with Newcastle’s points tally masking some poor performances, but he appears to be safe in his job for the time being.

In terms of potential transfers, Lille striker Jonathan David has been strongly linked with a move to the Magpies, as they look for a long-term replacement for Callum Wilson, as well as hope to ease the burden on the slightly injury-prone Alexander Isak. Talks with the 24-year-old Canada international are even being planned, in what could be a brilliant piece of business.

Burnley youngster Luca Koleosho has also been mentioned as a possible target for the Magpies, having enjoyed a promising start to the season for the Clarets, scoring twice in five Championship appearances.

According to Caught Offside, Newcastle are among a host of clubs keen on completing the signing of RB Leipzig centre-back Castello Lukeba. He is rated at £60m by the Bundesliga club, with the Magpies’ Premier League rivals Aston Villa also thought to be in the mix to snap up the 21-year-old. Manchester City, Chelsea and Real Madrid are mentioned, too, summing up how highly-rated the Frenchman is.

Lukeba could be a signing of serious intent by Newcastle, at a time when they have missed out on Marc Guehi and need a top-quality centre-back to come in. The 21-year-old is such an exciting talent, with former Lyon captain Leo Dubois saying of him: “He’s a young player, though there’s a lot of maturity in his game. He’s a great listener, he’s hungry to learn. He’s a player that’s showing his qualities, I’m happy for him.”

Lukeba is in the 90th percentile when it comes to pass completion rate among centre-backs (vs others in top five leagues), and the 96th for successful take-ons, not to mention being in the 63rd for progressive passes, showing that he isn’t just playing it safe at the back, instead looking to pick holes in the opposition press. These are elite-level ball-playing numbers.

Despite only signing for the Blues last summer, one of the many names that seem to be on the chopping block at Chelsea this summer, is French defender, Axel Disasi.

Since the arrival of new manager, Enzo Maresca, the importance of on-ball qualities in defense has risen, and therefore it is believed Disasi could be further down the pecking order, than defensive peers such as Wesley Fofana and Levi Colwill.

Disasi – who has caught the eye of Newcastle United – made 44 appearances for Chelsea last season in all competitions, scoring three goals, and contributing to ten clean sheets in his 3,690 minutes played, although the belief is that he could now be shown the door.

In turn, the Blues could look to acquire a suitable upgrade…

According to reports from TEAMtalk, Chelsea could make a move to sign Liverpool defender, Joe Gomez, before the end of the summer window. The Merseysiders are reportedly keen to sell the England international, and are willing to accept an appropriate bid.

The reports claim Maresca has made it clear to the club chiefs that he wants defensive reinforcements in the centre-back position, with Gomez being high on their shortlist.

Gomez made 51 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool last season, providing three assists, and contributing to 14 clean sheets in his 3,133 minutes played. He also played a variety of positions, making 25 appearances at right-back, 19 appearances at left-back, five in central defence, and even two as a defensive midfielder.

Gomez vs Disasi comparison

Like Gomez, Disasi did have to fill in at right-back a few times last season, due to the injuries of Reece James and Malo Gusto. The 26-year-old made eight appearances at right-back, and due to James's injury issues, any defensive acquisition would need to have that same versatility shown by Disasi, something Gomez has in abundance.

Back in 2018, Troy Deeney described the £85k-per-week star as a "beast" of a player, claiming he could be England's centre-half for the next 15 years. Since then, it hasn't quite worked out that way for Gomez, only making 15 appearances for England, and not nailing down a starting spot for the Three Lions.

However, you can see the value in Gomez as a player, putting up good defensive action numbers, and being able to do so in a variety of positions. He doubled Disasi's tackle numbers, averaging 2.37 per 90, and nearly doubled his interceptions too, with 1.09 per 90.

Whilst Disasi averages more passes attempted than Gomez, and a higher pass completion percentage, this could be down to two factors. One being Gomez featuring more as a fullback last season, getting fewer touches and build up involvement than the central defenders, or secondly, due to the more progressive nature of his passes (higher risk).

Gomez averages 0.99 more progressive passes than Disasi per 90, 0.19 more passes into the final third, and 0.93 more progressive carries. This would be important for Maresca's system, having the ability to progress play through the lines, whether that's through passing or carrying.

As such, the Liverpool man could represent the perfect upgrade in the backline, while also allowing Maresca to finally show Disasi the door.

Com a contratação de Vítor Pereira, o Timão se tornou o sétimo time da Série A do Brasileirão a ter um treinador estrangeiro, e a lista ainda pode aumentar com Botafogo e Santos. Na visão do meia, a nacionalidade não importa, e sim a metodologia e filosofia de trabalho. Ele ainda elogiou Jorge Jesus e Abel Ferreira, técnicos que conseguiram sucesso no Brasil.

Perguntado se conhecia o estilo ou a formação preferida do novo treinador, Willian esclareceu que espera entender melhor a maneira de pensar de Vítor Pereira quando ele chegar, durante os treinos e jogos.

– Sinceramente, não sabemos a forma como ele quer que a equipe jogue. Não teve essa conversa. Veremos isso quando ele chegar, durante os treinamentos, entender aquilo que ele quer, a formação que deseja jogar. Independente disso, nós jogadores temos que estar preparados para todas as situações e a maneira que ele for colocar a gente para jogar. Temos que estar preparado para isso.

Com vasta experiência no futebol europeu, Willian avaliou que Vítor Pereira encontrará nas dependência tanto do CT Joaquim Grava como na Neo Química Arena, uma estrutura “padrão europeia”.

– O Corinthians tem uma estrutura muito boa para receber qualquer profissional que venha de fora. O Corinthians tem um CT que muitos clubes na Europa não tem. A fase de adaptação dele, pode ser que tenha um pouco de dificuldades, porque nunca viveu aqui nem trabalhou no Brasil. Creio que ele vai conseguir se adaptar, e nós vamos procurar ajudá-lo ao máximo -concluiu o camisa 10 do Timão.
