West Ham could have unleashed 17 y/o sensation instead of signing Phillips

After winning the Europa Conference League last season, West Ham United were expected to be challenging for Europa League spots by the end of the current campaign.

At the moment, the London-based club currently find themselves residing in seventh-place, just two points behind Manchester United.

This is a massive upheaval in form as, last season, despite winning a European trophy, The Hammers only survived relegation to the Championship by six points.

In order to try and cement their Premier League status during the 2023/24 season, David Moyes sanctioned a massive overhaul of his squad, which included selling academy graduate, Declan Rice to Arsenal for a fee worth around £105m.

This massive injection of money allowed West Ham to spend around £117m to bolster their team. The summer transfer window included the likes of Mohamed Kudus and James Ward-Prowse joining the club for fees worth over £30m.

However, after the season got started following the end of the summer transfer window, it felt as if something was missing from Moyes' squad.

That is despite Ward-Prowse proving that his transfer fee of £30m was an absolute steal. The former Southampton man has managed to contribute to a total of 15 goals across all competitions thus far.

West Ham midfielder James Ward-Prowse

Despite the midfielder exceeding what was expected of him following last season's 16 goal contributions for Southampton, the centre of West Ham's team seemed to lack stability and needed somebody to come in and help Edson Alvarez with the defensive-midfield duties.

So, in the January transfer window, Moyes struck a deal with Manchester City and gained the services of Kalvin Phillips on loan until the end of the season.

How Kalvin Phillips has performed at his new club

Despite Phillips' addition being a statement signing for the Hammers, his move to the London-based club has left a lot to be desired so far.

During his debut for the club, he was taken off in the 68th minute after making an error which allowed Bournemouth to capitalise and score their only goal of the game.

His second game for West Ham came against Manchester United, where he was only brought on in the 72nd minute. Despite coming on late into the second half, Phillips was once again at fault when he lost the ball in the centre of the park as Alejandro Garnacho eventually scored.

These errors that the defensive-midfielder has made could've potentially been avoided if Moyes had decided to entrust academy graduate, Lewis Orford.

The youngster signed his first professional deal with West Ham last February and has been in stellar form for the U21s this season but hasn't been seen in the first-team picture. Instead, a move for Phillips in January was preferred. He may well come good but those valuable minutes could have been handed to Orford.

Who is Lewis Orford?

Orford is a defensive midfielder who has been with West Ham since the age of five. The youngster's talents have been likened to that of Rice by The Guardian with his range of passing also being 'beyond his years.'

In a feature, writer John Brewin said: 'His height reminds of Rice and Carrick though he exhibits a greater turn of pace than either, with a range of passing beyond his years that has made him the Hammers’ U18 playmaker.'

The talented midfielder was also included in West Ham's first-team when they played against FCSB in the group stage of the Europa Conference League and has already been in the matchday squad on three occasions this term.

As the transfer of Phillips is yet to make a noticeable difference to West Ham's results, it could've been worthwhile for the club to have given the playing time to an academy player such as Orford instead.

As per Transfermarkt, Orford has played a total of 19 games this season for West Ham's youth setup and has contributed to eight goals. Perhaps not as defensive-minded as Phillips, it's clear he can play a pivotal part, notably in the final third.

Indeed, an extended run in the first team could've been highly beneficial for the youngsters' development and would've allowed Moyes to mould Orford into the player he desires.

Crystal Palace struck gold with “superb” gem who’s now worth 650% more

In recent years, Crystal Palace have developed an excellent transfer strategy that allows them to pick up bargains every window.

However, they have also proven to be successful at developing those talents into top players, which will now be the task of new boss Oliver Glasner.

Marc Guehi and Eberechi Eze are two examples of their brilliant recruitment, and they are hoping Daniel Munoz and Adam Wharton will continue this run.

That said, there’s one player that stands out who has seen their market value increase since joining the club.

What Palace paid for Michael Olise

Prior to his move to Palace, Michael Olise was playing his football for Reading in the Championship, the club he made his professional debut at, which was in a 3-0 defeat to Leeds United in 2019.

However, it would be two seasons later that he really started to show his class and immense quality, as over his first two campaigns, the winger made 23 appearances in the second division, picking up just one assist.

That said, during the 2020/21 he announced himself as one of the most exciting talents in England, boasting an incredible record of seven goals and 12 assists in 37 starts, playing as both an attacking midfielder and a winger.

The following summer, Patrick Vieira decided to splash £8m on the left-footed ace, in what has proved to be one of the best steals in recent Premier League history.

Michael Olise’s market value in 2024

Since arriving at the Eagles, Olise has continued to develop as a player, and despite the step up to the Premier League often being overwhelming, the now-22-year-old wasn’t fazed one bit.

The number seven had his minutes managed in the first season, starting just 12 games but playing 26 matches in the league, with a record of two goals and five assists.

Last season, his creativity really began to flourish, as he picked up 11 assists and played in all but one game in the top flight. Unfortunately, injuries have ruined this campaign for Olise, missing 13 games, but he’s started to develop his goal-scoring ability, netting six goals and providing three assists in just eight starts.

One game this season that sums up what Olise’s all about was against Brentford at home when the Eagles won 3-1, and the table below highlights why he’s now valued 650% more than what he cost the club, with recent reports indicating that he could fetch a fee of roughly £60m this summer.

The fact that Olise has added goals to his game now makes him “superb,” as per Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, while also putting him among the elite wingers who can both create and find the back of the net themselves.

The France U21 gem can also be a threat via his dribbling or his passing, which makes him extremely unpredictable and difficult to stop. His work rate is also unbelievable, and he is willing to get stuck in for his side, which just makes him even more valuable.

Michael Olise

The signing of Olise will go down as one of the bargains of the past decade, especially if he continues to live up to his potential, and Palace will hope that they can unearth plenty more Olise-like talents in the future.

Marizanne Kapp four-for sets up series win for South Africa

Lizelle Lee, Sune Luus and Mignon du Preez combine to chase down the small target easily

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Jan-2020Marizanne Kapp’s four-for first restricted New Zealand women to a below-par total of 115, and then Lizelle Lee, Sune Luus and Mignon du Preez combined to chase down the target within 24 overs in the second ODI as South Africa sealed the three-match series in Auckland.Opting to bat first, New Zealand were jolted by fast bowler Kapp’s early strikes, as they lost their openers inside the first five overs for just 12 runs. Suzie Bates, at No. 3, fought with a 60-ball 38 to lead a recovery but received little or no support from the other end as the New Zealand procession continued.Sophie Devine and Katie Perkins fell short of their creases, departing for 9 and 0 respectively, following which a brief 47-run resistance between Bates and Katey Martin followed. After the partnership was broken by Dane van Niekerk, Ayabonga Khaka hurt the hosts further with a double-strike in the 24th over to remove Bates and Amelia Kerr. Kapp returned to dismiss Leigh Kasperek and Jess Kerr to finish with four wickets and leave New Zealand at 108 for 9. The last-wicket pair could add only seven more runs to the total as Masabata Klaas had Hayley Jensen caught behind. In reply, Devine dismissed opener Laura Wolvaardt for a duck but Lee continued her fine form with a 43-ball 38, with Luus at the other end, as South Africa cruised towards the target. Du Preez joined Luus after Lee’s dismissal as the pair put up an unbroken 60-run stand and secured an easy win for the visitors.

Progress: Reporter shares key update on Mathias Kvistgaarden Celtic move

Earlier this week, Celtic completed their first signing of the January transfer window with a £3m deal for Rapid Vienna winger Nicolas Kuhn, but Brendan Rodgers doesn't intend to stop there. Before the deadline, the Hoops boss also wants to add a left-back and a striker to his squad.

One candidate for the latter position is Bologna's Sydney van Hooijdonk, son of the former Celtic man Pierre, and one newspaper in Italy has even predicted that he'll make the move to Parkhead in the second half of the window.

Another is Brondby's Mathias Kvistgaarden. It's been nearly a week now since we learned that Celtic were in talks with the Danish club over a transfer, and it seems as if there's been an encouraging development in their pursuit.

Celtic take step towards Kvistgaarden deal

According to Football Insider reporter Pete O'Rourke, Celtic are "making progress" on a deal for Kvistgaarden. If the Scottish Premiership leaders receive "encouragement" from Brondby, they could launch an offer.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers looks on.

Meanwhile, the proposed move for Van Hooijdonk "has hit a stumbling block", because it's believed it would take at least £8m for Bologna to sell him – a fee that's "too steep" for Celtic in the mid-season market. Crucially, Kvistgaarden is expected to be available "on more favourable terms".

"Crazy" Kvistgaarden has edge over Van Hooijdonk

21-year-old Kvistgaarden has been with Brondby since 2018, racking up 81 appearances for the club, but this is the year where he's really come alive. He scored six goals and provided three assists in his last six league games at the back end of 2022/23, a "crazy" run of form in the words of talent scout Jacek Kulig, and he's carried that momentum into the current campaign with 14 direct goal contributions (seven goals, seven assists) in 21 appearances.

The youngster ranks second in the league for assists and fourth for overall goal contributions. If he keeps this up, be it at Brondby or at Celtic, it surely won't be long before he graduates from Denmark's Under-21s (for whom he's played 16 games) to the senior team.

Celtic could repeat O'Riley blinder with swoop for £1.6k-p/w "hero"

The Hoops have been credited with an interest in the Championship centre-forward.

ByDan Emery Jan 20, 2024

In light of his exploits this term, you'd expect him to arrive in Glasgow full of confidence and in peak condition, but the same can't be said for Van Hooijdonk. The Dutchman has found himself down the pecking order at Bologna, starting just two of his side's 20 league games and watching 10 matches as an unused substitute.

Given that Celtic's joint-top scorer is a midfielder in Matt O'Riley (10 goals), and Kyogo Furuhashi is the only one of their forwards to score more than seven goals this season, they need somebody who can make an instant impact in whatever capacity as they battle for the title with Rangers. There will be pressure on the new face to swiftly boost Rodgers' firepower, and Kvistgaarden looks better-placed to live up to that task. As such, it may not be the worst thing that Van Hooijdonk is out of their price range.

Harvey Elliott U-turn? Liverpool star's future takes fresh twist amid RB Leipzig transfer links

Harvey Elliott is reportedly more likely to stay at Liverpool this summer despite seemingly being on the brink of an RB Leipzig transfer.

Elliott looked set to leave LiverpoolAgreed personal terms with RB LeizpigCould stay at Anfield after allFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

According to The Daily Mail, Elliott could remain at Liverpool, until January at the very least, as none of his suitors have put any significant offers on the table for the £40 million-rated ($54m) player. Head coach Arne Slot does not have a huge amount of attacking depth, so the 22-year-old could stay after all.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Elliott admitted he may have to leave Liverpool this summer if their new signings "blocked his path" to the first-team. Just last week, the England Under-21 international reportedly agreed personal terms with Leipzig as an Anfield exit beckoned. But with days left of the transfer window, the German side, Crystal Palace, and Brighton have not tempted Liverpool to part ways with the youngster.

DID YOU KNOW?

The attacking midfielder, whose Liverpool contract runs until 2027, has scored 15 goals and added 21 assists in 149 games for the Reds so far. This season, he came off the bench in second-half stoppage time in his team's 3-2 win at Newcastle United on Monday, but that is his sole outing so far.

Getty Images SportWHAT NEXT?

Elliott, who has also played in central midfield and on both wings for Liverpool, is running out of time to seal a permanent exit or loan move. The transfer window shuts on September 1, so he does not have long to get his ducks in a row.

Garnacho is a Blue! Chelsea complete £40m signing of Argentina international winger from Man Utd

Chelsea have completed the signing of Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United.

Chelsea sign GarnachoWinger joins Blues for £40mGarnacho had been exiled by AmorimFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Garnacho has signed a seven-year contract with the Blues after the two Premier League clubs agreed a deal worth a fixed £40 million fee ($54m) with a 10 per cent sell-on clause, Goal understands. The 21-year-old has become Chelsea’s latest new arrival following the earlier signings of Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens and Jorrel Hato, while Estevao, Dario Essugo, Mamadou Sarr and Kendry Paez all joined following pre-existing agreements.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Garnacho had been linked with Chelsea for some time after being told – alongside Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia – that he was not part of United manager Ruben Amorim’s plans for the 2025-26 season.

WHAT GARNACHO SAID

Speaking to Chelsea's official club website, Garnacho said of his move: "It’s an incredible moment for my family and I to join this great club. I can’t wait to get started.

"I watched the Club World Cup and to join the world champions is special – we’re the best team in the world! It’s amazing to be here and I’m very happy."

DID YOU KNOW?

Emerging through United’s youth academy, Garnacho made his senior debut for the club in a 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the Premier League in April 2022. He then became a regular in the United first team, helping the Red Devils win the Carabao Cup in 2022-23 and the FA Cup in 2023-24 under Erik ten Hag’s stewardship. However Garnacho endured a difficult relationship with current United boss Amorim, with the winger being omitted – alongside Rashford – from the matchday squad which faced rivals Manchester City in the derby in December 2024. And Garnacho would later express his frustration at only being used as a 71st-minute substitute in United's 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final in May.

Spurs eyeing up Eriksen 2.0 with move for a "diamond" talent

da luck: The festive period has been relievingly sunny at Tottenham Hotspur, with Ange Postecoglou's side putting the misery of a five-match winless run in the Premier League behind them.

da doce: Now, with numerous key players imminently returning from lengthy layoffs, there is genuine cause for optimism and a real belief that Spurs can construct a purple patch that will take them to the business end of the 2023/24 campaign with it all to play for.

Ange Postecoglou and Daniel Levy.

The January transfer window marks a crucial point, however, and while the defence is being prioritised, Postecoglou appears to be lining up a bid for an exciting midfield prospect.

Spurs transfer news – Gabriel Misehouy

According to a report from Tottenham Hotspur News, the London club is in the hunt to add to their impressive youth ranks by signing Ajax teenager Gabriel Misehouy, who is out of contract with the Dutch Eredivisie side in June.

Yet to make his senior debut, Misehouy has taken great strides in his development for Ajax's development side this year and scouts have relayed to Postecoglou that he is well-suited for the Spurs project.

Santiago Gimenez to Spurs: Where Tottenham's last 11 Eredivisie signings are now

Tottenham have signed some notable duds from Dutch shores over the last 20 years.

ByMatt Dawson Dec 18, 2023

It's unlikely that Tottenham would move to sign the youngster this month and will instead take advantage of his contract situation, welcoming him to the fold in the summer.

Gabriel Misehouy's style of play

Described as a "diamond" of a player by his family, Misehouy has been profiled by the Guardian in their 'Next Generation 2022' list, described as a versatile No. 10 and confident – even thriving – when pressured.

While he has yet to receive a senior debut in his homeland, the 18-year-old has been in fine fettle this season and sat Ajax's Eredivisie outing against FC Twente on the bench, notably scoring six goals and supplying three assists from only nine starts in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie – the second tier of Dutch football.

It's worth noting that Misehouy picked up a knock earlier in the year and missed nine matches in what appears to have inhibited his chances of an ascent to the top level, but with a goal and an assist in his previous outing there is little doubt that he is knocking on John van 't Schip's door.

Should Spurs succeed with a swoop for the 5 foot 8 dynamo, then Postecoglou could even get his mitts on the next version of Christian Eriksen, with the former White Hart Lane stalwart signing from Ajax for £11.5m in 2013, when he was 21.

christian-eriksen-tottenham-hotspur-transfer-postecoglou-pochettino-bale-james-maddison

At the height of his game in London, Eriksen, certainly similar positionally to Misehhouy, was heralded as a "magician" by teammate Dele Alli (whose thoughts were no doubt reflected throughout the squad) and chalked up 305 appearances, posting 69 goals and 90 assists as he established himself as one of the Premier League's finest playmakers.

Now playing for Manchester United, the 31-year-old Dane still ranks among the top 12% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists and the top 15% for progressive passes per 90, as per FBref, but at Tottenham, his prowess was on a different level.

A dexterous string-puller, Eriksen is not a like-for-like attacking midfielder when comparing him to Misehouy, but by signing another young Ajax 10 and moulding them into a Premier League-calibre star, the Postecoglou project could be solidified and propelled to new heights in the years to come.

Batty extends Surrey deal to embark on 24th season

Rikki Clarke also signs on for extra year at age of 38

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Oct-2019Gareth Batty will embark on a 24th season of first-class cricket next year, after agreeing a one-year extension to his contract at Surrey that will keep him at the club at least until the eve of his 43rd birthday.Batty, who turned 42 on Sunday, claimed 48 wickets in all formats in 2019, including 26 at 26.07 in eight County Championship fixtures, the second-most of any England-qualified spinner, behind Jack Leach. His season included a remarkable display against Warwickshire at Edgbaston in May, where his ten wickets in the match included a hat-trick as he finished with a career-best 8 for 64 in the second innings. After beginning his career at Yorkshire in 1997, Batty played for Surrey for four seasons before moving to Worcestershire in 2002, then returned to The Oval in 2010.In 2016, at the age of 39, he was unexpectedly recalled by England for the Test series in Bangladesh and India, where he made his first Test appearances for more than 11 years.Batty will be joined once again in Surrey’s ranks by his fellow old boy, Rikki Clarke, 38, who has also extended his stay by another year. Coincidentally, the pair made their England Test debuts in the same fixture 16 years ago, against Bangladesh at Dhaka in October 2003.Despite Surrey’s disappointing season, Clarke enjoyed another prolific campaign with the ball, claiming 43 wickets at 23.97, including a best of 7 for 74 against Hampshire at The Oval.Gus Atkinson, a 21-year-old seamer who has yet to make his first-team debut, also signed a one-year extension for the club.

Aston Villa eyeing £40m Barkley partner who can be "one of the best"

Aston Villa have not yet completed their first signing of the summer but it's clear that Ross Barkley will be plying his trade at Villa Park next season, with Fabrizio Romano confirming the deal's on the cusp of completion.

Barkley made 24 appearances for Dean Smith's Villa during the 2020/21 campaign, on loan from Chelsea, scoring three times and placing one assist, but failed to really nail down a spot and departed at the end of the term.

Since, the 30-year-old has aged like fine wine, producing a cultured and resurgent campaign with Luton Town over the past year, with Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson even claiming he was "not far off Player of the Season" for his efforts in the Premier League.

Ross Barkley on loan at Aston Villa

Unai Emery and Monchi have made a shrewd move here, and they look keen to swiftly repeat the trick with another former loanee.

Aston Villa lining up another former loan star

According to TEAMtalk, Aston Villa have been put on alert after AS Roma transfer-listed Tammy Abraham for £40m, with the Serie A side scrambling to meet financial rules and revamp their squad under Daniele De Rossi, who succeeded Jose Mourinho in January.

Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United are both named as suitors for a player who has proven himself a top-class goalscorer in the past, blighted this season by a ruinous ACL injury.

Tammy Abraham on loan at Aston Villa

Villa will hope their past affinity with the England international holds sway in the proceedings to come, though whether any interested parties would meet the above-mentioned price tag is questionable.

Why Tammy Abraham would thrive with Ross Barkley

Abraham might have only played eight times this season, starting twice and scoring once, but he's certainly enjoyed success in Italy, winning the Europa Conference League in his first season after scoring 27 goals in all competitions. Having enjoyed such fine feats, Abraham was predicted to become "one of the best in the world" by Roma skipper Lorenzo Pellegrini.

Indeed, Abraham remarked that Mourinho had turned him into a "monster", bagging nine times in the Conference League and demonstrating his dynamic style in the league, averaging one key pass and dribble and 5.2 successful duels per game, as per Sofascore.

He'd previously spent a few seasons as Chelsea's talisman before completing his £34m switch to Italy's metropolis, but the first understanding of his prolific skill set emerged during his short-term stint at Villa Park, where his youthful exuberance fired the Lions back into the Premier League.

Languishing in the Championship for the second year, Abraham's contribution proved pivotal, scoring 26 goals from 40 Championship matches. With such an impressive track record across multiple nations, both domestically and in European competition, it's no surprise that Abraham has been dubbed a "goal machine" by ex-Manchester City striker Stephen Elliott.

By providing Villa Park with a goalscorer capable of rivalling Ollie Watkins – and one with such pedigree on the continent – Emery could score a real win, especially when considering the partnership that could be forged with Barkley.

As per FBref, the England international ranks among the top 11% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 16% for shot-creating actions and the top 1% for successful take-ons per 90, and it is this assortment of skills that would make such an impact off the shadow of the imposing No. 9.

Indeed, Barkley's robust output and athletic prowess makes for a unique weapon, driving forward and beating opponents to unleash strikes and creative support both.

Given his creativity and willingness to advance into the danger area with such constancy, Abraham could find the perfect ammunition to rediscover his scoring touch back in his homeland.

Of course, Emery already yields one of the Premier League's finest forwards in Watkins, but then, the dynamic Three Lions star could make excellent use of a strike partner cut from a more traditional mould.
