Assim, a provável escalação do Palmeiras conta com Jaílson; Marcos Rocha, Luan, Kuscevic e Victor Luis; Danilo, Danilo Barbosa e Scarpa; Rony, Luiz Adriano e Breno Lopes.

O Maior Campeão Nacional vai a campo às 20h (horário oficial de Brasília) deste domingo no Allianz Parque contra o Tricolor Baiano em busca de mais uma vitória para engatar no Campeonato Brasileiro.

Liverpool boss reveals how Jarell Quansah reacted to brutal half-time hooking against Ipswich with young defender undertaking extra training session

Liverpool's Jarell Quansah was taken off at half-time against Ipswich by Arne Slot, who revealed how the defender reacted to the brutal substitution.

Quansah subbed off at half-timeStruggled in first-half against IpswichSlot reveals how Quansah reacted to hookingGetty Images SportWHAT HAPPENED?

Quansah made his way into Liverpool's senior squad under Jurgen Klopp less than a year ago and the centre-back's stocks have quickly risen as he has become a key squad member at the start of this season despite only being 21 years old. He even got the nod to start in Liverpool's Premier League opener against Ipswich Town ahead of Ibrahima Konate. However, after a gruelling first half, Slot decided to hook the 21-year-old as he struggled against Liam Delap.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Slot has now revealed that he held talks with Quansah thrice after the match to ensure the young defender was not losing confidence due to the substitution. The new Dutch manager also revealed that Quansah asked to train at the club's facilities on Sunday, the day after the clash, as he was determined to work on and iron out his mistakes.

Getty Images SportWHAT SLOT SAID

Speaking to the media, Slot said: "In a way you would expect a player to react. I spoke to him immediately after the game and again on Sunday, the day after. At the end of that conversation, he asked if he could train on Sunday.

"Normally he should have done recovery (sessions) that day but he asked to train. On Tuesday, he picked up a bit of an injury so could not train on Wednesday so let's see if he can train today. He reacted in the way every player should.

"I don't think there should be that much into it. What I said was he did not lose every duel. But he lost one or two important ones. What has been told to me is that I said he lost every duel which he did not do. I said to the team, it was not about Jarell.

"We as a team did not do well. At that time, the only threat from Ipswich was [Liam] Delap and he won one or two important duels. I was trying to get that strength out of their team by bringing in Ibou [Konate]."

Slot mentioned that the 21-year-old had picked up a slight niggle in training in the middle of the week and the England defender could be unavailable for selection on Sunday, August 25 when they face Brentford.

Tottenham have sat down to discuss signing £26m ace likened to Gibbs-White

Tottenham have "sat down at the table" to discuss signing a £26 million player who's been called "similar" to Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White.

Spurs targeting new midfielder and attacker this summer

As reported by reliable media sources, like football.london correspondent Alasdair Gold, Spurs are targeting a new number six and attacker for Ange Postecoglou this summer.

Ange personally identifies £51m forward as perfect signing for Tottenham

The Australian think he’d fit in “seamlessly”.

ByEmilio Galantini Apr 18, 2024

Specific names are already being shortlisted ahead of the next transfer window, and there have been many mentioned this week alone. RB Leipzig ace Dani Olmo has played his way onto Tottenham's transfer agenda, among others, as the north Londoners seek more threatening options.

Tottenham have an option to make Timo Werner's signing permanent for around £15 million, but while the German has got off to a good start overall, some have expressed doubt over his ability to chip in significantly long-term.

"I’m sorry, he misses so many good chances. And those chances that he missed, they can change games. Technically, he’s one of the worst players in the Premier League. I’m going to say that, because I honestly believe that," said pundit Jay Bothroyd to Optus Sport in a harsh assessment of Werner.

“He doesn’t cross the ball well, he hits it as hard as he can across the face of the goal all the time. He never picks anybody out. His finishing’s poor. His passing’s poor.

“And yes, you can say that he’s effective. But then I’m saying, okay, he’s an athlete. In this day and age, I look at him and I say he’s effective because of his athleticism. As he gets older and he loses that athleticism, how effective is he going to be then?”

Fabrizio Romano also says Tottenham want a player who can add more goals and assists to Postecoglou's side, and one astute option could be Genoa's Albert Gudmundsson.

The Iceland international has bagged 13 goals and three assists in 30 Serie A starts under Albert Gilardino this term, leading to reported interest from N17.

Tottenham sit down to discuss signing Albert Gudmundsson

According to a report from Italy this week, specifically newspaper Tuttosport, Tottenham have "sat down at the table" to discuss signing Gudmundsson this summer, and so have Inter Milan.

However, they could be better placed to seal a move for the attacking midfielder than Inter, as agent Oscar Damiani told FCInterNews that Italian clubs most likely won't reach the potential £26 million asking price for Gudmundsson.

Called "similar" to Forest star Gibbs-White by Football Transfers, the 26-year-old has also been likened to Liverpool star Mohamed Salah by teammate Kevin Strootman.

“He reminds me of Salah when he was at Roma, in that every now and then he disappears. Much like Salah then, he would have four or five chances per match and only score at most one," said Strootman.

“They used to say that if Salah was more clinical, he would be playing for Liverpool, and that is exactly what happened. All joking aside, Gudmundsson is a devastating player and also an exemplary professional.”

O’Neil ditches Ait-Nouri in predicted Wolves lineup vs Burnley

Wolverhampton Wanderers failed to bounce back from their FA Cup quarter-final defeat a few weeks ago as they played Aston Villa on the weekend.

With every point crucial in their bid to secure a top-half Premier League finish, the Old Gold suffered a 2-0 defeat which hinders their recent progress.

Of course, Gary O’Neil has suffered his fair share of injury blows recently, with Matheus Cunha, Pedro Neto and Hwang Hee-Chan all missing from his frontline, while centre-back Craig Dawson has been a big absence from his defence.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil celebrates a Premier League win.

They have a chance to redeem themselves following the weekend loss, hosting Burnley in the top flight on Tuesday evening.

Several players could come back into the side ahead of the clash, but O’Neil will likely just make a couple of changes to his starting XI.

With this in mind, here's a look at the 11 players who could be unleashed in the lineup against Vincent Kompany’s men on Tuesday, where three important points are at stake.

1 GK – Jose Sa

Jose Sa

The Portuguese shot-stopper will make his 13th consecutive Premier League appearance against Burnley, hoping to keep just his fifth clean sheet of the season.

He last failed to concede a goal in the top flight during a 1-0 win over Sheffield United back in February and O’Neil will be hoping this changes on Tuesday evening.

2 CB – Santiago Bueno

Dawson suffered an injury against Fulham at the start of March and has been ruled out since, breaking up O’Neil’s regular three-man defence.

The groin injury meant Dawson has missed the previous three matches. There won't be a need to rush him back against Burnley, meaning Bueno will keep his place in the lineup.

He didn’t have the best of games against Villa, winning just two of his six contested duels, but he did complete 90% of his passes along with taking 56 touches during the match, and he will be raring to go against Burnley.

3 CB – Max Kilman

Max Kilman

The Wolves captain received his sixth top flight booking of the season against Villa on the weekend, while he won zero ground duels, but the defender finished with a 90% pass success rate while dominating aerially, winning four of his six aerial duels.

He will remain in the side, hoping to recover from a below-par outing to shine against Burnley tomorrow.

4 CB – Toti Gomes

Toti

The Portuguese centre-back is perhaps one of the most improved players in the squad. Last season, he made only 17 appearances in the league. This season? Toti has already featured 26 times, impressing under O’Neil.

Against Villa, he won seven of his 11 ground duels, showcasing his brute strength in one-on-one battles, and he will be hoping to shine once again on Tuesday.

5 RM – Nelson Semedo

The former Barcelona defender has been used in a more advanced role recently, but this has yet to pay off. Across 28 Premier League games this season, Semedo has registered just one assist.

During the game against Villa, he delivered just one accurate cross from four attempts and made one key pass, hardly the stats of a player who O’Neil trusted to contribute to going forward.

With a lack of options available to him, Semedo will start against Burnley.

6 CM – Tommy Doyle

Tommy Doyle

The on-loan Manchester City gem has impressed in spells for Wolves. Due to his current injury woes, O’Neil has given him more opportunities, with the youngster starting the previous three league matches.

With Neto and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde missing tomorrow’s clash, Doyle will retain his spot in the starting XI.

7 CM – Joao Gomes

Wolves have a diamond in their side with the talented young Brazilian, who won his first cap for his country during the recent international break.

A 92% pass success rate against Villa indicated that he controlled proceedings from the heart of the midfield, while winning 12 of his 19 total duels shows he was keen on getting involved in the dirty work throughout the contest.

O’Neil will once again unleash him in the middle of the pitch alongside Doyle, with the hope that the pair can cause some damage.

8 LM – Hugo Bueno

Against Villa, Rayan Ait-Nouri completed just 13 passes and took 33 touches, failing to really get involved during the match, which could see O’Neil unleash Bueno in the starting XI.

The youngster has yet to start a Premier League match in 2024, but the tie against Burnley could be the perfect opportunity for him to finally play 90 minutes in the top flight.

9 AM – Pablo Sarabia

The Spanish veteran has been in solid form throughout the 2023/24 campaign, making 22 appearances in the league, scoring three goals, and grabbing six assists in the process.

O’Neil has tended to utilise his skills as an attacking midfielder recently due to injuries, which is a position that Sarabia will keep against Burnley.

The 19th-placed side in the division have conceded 65 goals so far this term, suggesting Sarabia may have an ideal chance to add to his tally.

10 AM – Mario Lemina

Lemina has been used as an attacking midfielder recently, adapting well to the change. During the Villa match, he took three shots throughout the game while succeeding with two of his three dribble attempts.

He missed a big chance along with making one key pass and there is no doubt the more advanced role suits his game.

Australia rout India to win third World Cup

Australia missed Steve Waugh, Shane Warne and Jason Gillespie only in spirit as they routed India by 125 runs

Australia missed Steve Waugh, Shane Warne and Jason Gillespie only in spirit as they routed India by 125 runs to win the World Cup for a historic third time. The mischievous smile rarely left Ricky Ponting’s boyish face as he led from the front, playing the innings of his life for an unbeaten 140 that powered Australia to 359/2 from 50 overs. In the face of great pressure chasing 360, India were given fleeting glimpses of hope by Virender Sehwag (82) and the rain, but succumbed to 234 all out in 39.2 overs.Without losing a single game on their way, Australia stamped their authority on world cricket. The mantle rested easily on Steve Waugh’s shoulders, and Ponting can now tell the world that he has lived up to every expectation Australian fans would have had.For the Indians a much cherished dream came crashing down to earth at the Wanderers. With no player having experience of being in a final as big as this, their bowlers appeared nervous and jerky after their captain gave them first use of the conditions. Zaheer Khan, charged up, oozed nervous energy as he charged in and delivered a 15-run over to get the game under way, accompanied by a few kind words to Adam Gilchrist. The best time to have a cheeky word with aggressive Australian batsmen is when they are walking back to the pavilion, not when they’ve just played and missed. Showing the stomach for a big fight, Gilchrist proceeded to tear the Indian bowling apart. He telegraphed his intentions early on, crashing the first ball of the third over, delivered by Zaheer Khan, to the long-off fence. From then on, there was no stopping him. Srinath, in particular, was treated severely, walloped for five fours and a six before he was taken off the attack. At the other end, Hayden was circumspect, getting his eye in and playing second fiddle. After Gilchrist had piled misery on the experienced Srinath and raw Zaheer Khan alike, Ganguly was forced to turn to his only spinner in just the 10th over.It paid dividends soon enough. Having slowed a touch after reaching his half-century off just 40 balls, Gilchrist attempted to heave Harbhajan over midwicket. With two fielders in the deep, there was little margin for error. The extra bounce from Harbhajan ensured that Gilchrist was beaten; the top edge swirling high towards midwicket where Sehwag held on to a well-judged catch.India had their first breakthrough, with Gilchrist gone for 57 (48 balls, 8 fours, 1 six) in the 14th over. While he would have been disappointed at falling against the run of play, he could take heart from the fact that he put Australia right on top with his contribution in a better-than-run-a-ball 105-run partnership for the first wicket. As is so often the case in one-dayers, one wicket paved the way for another. The fall of Gilchrist slowed things down considerably and not a single boundary was struck in the 5.5 over spell it took for the second Aussie wicket to fall.Extracting big turn from the damp spots on the wicket, Harbhajan got a ball to turn square from outside the leg and Hayden (37, 54 balls, 5 fours) could only manage a faint edge to wicketkeeper Rahul Dravid. Australia were 125/2, one ball shy of the 20-over mark.India savoured their twin strikes, and it was a good thing they did, for they was little else to celebrate on the day. What Gilchrist and Hayden did, Ponting and Damien Martyn did better. They batted India out of the game with a belligerent 234-run partnership in 30.1 overs that powered Australia to a mammoth 359/2, the highest-ever score in a World Cup final. The bowling was well short of even being tidy – they conceded as many as 37 extras – and paid the price. You can’t help but feel for Srinath, who might well have played his last one-dayer for India. After all, who wants to end a career with the figures of 10-0-87-0 in a World Cup final? For the Indian seamers, who have done a sterling job all series, the final proved the moment when the law of averages caught up with them, along with a determined batting line-up.Using the launchpad afforded them by Gilchrist’s early burst, Ponting and Martyn took time to play themselves in. Once they did, there was no holding back. Australia’s captain showed the world exactly what he was capable of perpetrating, hitting eight sixes and four fours in a 121-ball 140. He unveiled an array of pull shots, sending his sixes sailing into the stands in the arc from midwicket to square leg.Martyn, while not playing the breathtaking shots that Ponting essayed, scored at a fast clip while every now and then unveiling the kind of delicate artistry that would have classicists purring with delight. A back-foot cover drive that sailed over the ropes showed a sense of timing that few in the world of cricket can match. With 88 off just 84 balls in a World Cup final, Martyn can be well pleased with his effort. At the end of the Ponting-Martyn assault, Australia had 359/2 in 50 overs.Drawing deep into the resources of a well of optimism and hope, Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag walked out to attempt to make this World Cup final the greatest ever by pulling off a sensational win.One can only imagine the pressure piled onto the shoulders of Tendulkar as he stared down the wicket to Glenn McGrath first up. After pulling him unconvincingly to the midwicket fence off the fourth ball, Tendulkar tried to repeat the shot off the very next ball. The extra bounce beat him and the resultant top edge bobbed straight up in the air for McGrath to catch in his follow-through.The Australians had the big wicket they wanted; Tendulkar was back in the pavilion and a mere four runs were on the board. For most Indian fans, hope took a beating as the man who scored 673 runs in this World Cup was back in the pavilion.Ganguly (24) did his best to keep up the run rate, but fell to the pace of Brett Lee in the 10th over. Just three balls later, Mohammad Kaif was back in the hut for a duck and India were reeling at 59/3.From there on India did their best to keep up the pace, but were flagging when the skies opened and rain poured down at the Wanderers, threatening yet another twist in the tale with India on 103/3 in 17 overs. Even this rate was possible only as Ponting turned to his slow bowlers, in order to get through the overs. Brad Hogg and Darren Lehmann were introduced early and Sehwag went after both. Three consecutive boundaries off Lehmann in the 14th over got the Indian fans in the ground on their feet.Hogg too got a taste of the action, going for a four over cover and a six over long on off the third and fourth balls of the 15th over. When play resumed with the threat of rain gone, Ponting went back to his strike bowlers and they delivered the goods. While Sehwag kept the hopes of Indian fans up with good clean hits, the asking rate kept climbing. The sheer volume of runs required meant that scoring at a run a ball did nothing to arrest the steady climb of the required run rate.Dravid, meanwhile, played foil to Sehwag, nudging singles and attempting to keep the scoreboard ticking over and the strike rotating. Ones and twos, however, were never going to be enough and soon Sehwag began to feel the pressure.Using his range of strokes, Sehwag thumped a couple of pulls, a slog-sweep and an extra-cover drive for three fours and six. Reaching 82 off just 81 balls, he probably had the Duckworth/Lewis target in mind as he attempted a suicidal run in the 24th over. Driving Bichel firmly to mid off, Sehwag set off for a single and was well short of his crease when Darren Lehmann’s throw nailed the stumps at the non-striker’s end. Sehwag’s 10 boundaries and three sixes brought much joy to Indian fans.Dravid (47) played a dogged hand and Yuvraj Singh made a brisk 24, but neither could do anything to stop Australia’s march.Wickets fell at regular intervals, shared almost equally between all the bowlers and India’s resistance was cut short on 234 in 39.2 overs. While Ganguly might rue his decision to bowl first, you can’t help but feel that Australia were simply too good on the day. And yes, on every other day they walked out to play cricket in their successful 2003 World Cup campaign.

Spurs messed up with their Eriksen 2.0 who’s now worth less than Hojbjerg

Tottenham Hotspur have been fantastic this season under Ange Postecoglou, with the club now in a great position to secure Champions League football.

The Lilywhites' recent 4-0 battering of Aston Villa put them just two points behind the Villans with a game in hand.

Tottenham players celebrating

In truth, the entire Spurs squad is filled with quality, which was only enhanced in the summer, with the midfield particularly strong.

However, there are a couple of players still in the squad who perhaps don't quite live up to that billing. Indeed, one midfielder is now worth even less than Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg having failed to meet his potential since being signed by Mauricio Pochettino.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s value in 2024

Danish star Hojbjerg has been a constant figure in the Tottenham midfield since his arrival from Southampton in 2020 for a bargain fee of £15m.

The midfielder has played all but five Premier League games in the past three seasons, racking up 174 appearances over his Spurs career so far, including 26 matches this campaign in the Premier League.

Pierre Hojbjerg.

However, out of those 26 outings, the 28-year-old has only started six times, with Postecoglou opting for a more athletic and technical midfield.

Nonetheless, Hojbjerg is still estimated to be worth £26m by CIES Football Observatory after cementing himself as a reliable Premier League-quality player for a top side, unlike a certain Spurs ace who has struggled to showcase his talent.

Spurs have already sold a homegrown Hojbjerg upgrade who's pure "bliss"

This former £10m sale would perform very nicely within Ange’s set-up.

ByAngus Sinclair Mar 1, 2024 Giovanni Lo Celso’s worth in 2024

In January 2020, Christian Eriksen left Spurs for a new challenge in Italy, joining Inter after playing at the club for seven seasons.

The Denmark international made over 300 appearances for the Lilywhites, scoring 69 goals and providing 90 assists across all competitions, firmly cementing himself as a club legend of the 2010s.

gabriel-misehouy-christian-eriksen-tottenham-opinion

With the creative mastermind leaving, Pochettino turned Giovani Lo Celso’s £15m loan deal into a permanent signing for £27.3m, with the view that the Argentine would be the perfect replacement for Eriksen.

Initially, the former PSG ace performed well in a midfield three, starting the first seven games of the 2020/21 season and finding the net four times in the Europa League group stages and Europa League qualification phases. However, his Tottenham dream hasn’t exactly gone to plan since, with the midfielder spending the last year and a half prior to this campaign on loan at Villareal.

This campaign, Lo Celso has failed to work his way into the team other than when James Maddison picked up an injury, but despite his value dropping, he does have four goal contributions in four starts to his name.

Sadly, the 27-year-old is now among the lowest-valued first-team players in the Spurs squad, which is a relatively fair reflection of his influence on the side.

The fact that Lo Celso was an unused substitute in the victory over Villa at the weekend further supports that, and it seems that he will have to settle for a backup role to Maddison if he is to stay at Tottenham.

Overall, it’s quite clear that Lo Celso’s time at Spurs has been somewhat of a disaster, with the club set to take a huge loss on the Argentine if he does leave in the near future.

'If you are too self-centred, you are looking for ways to get out' – Virat Kohli

One hundred thirty-four runs in five Tests.Stats that make Indian captain Virat Kohli cringe each time he thinks of the 2014 Test series in England. On Thursday, in an Instagram chat with former England captain Kevin Pietersen, Kohli said that tour was the lowest point in his career and it had come about because he was “too focused” on “doing well from a personal point” instead of putting the team first.”The lowest point in my career was the England tour in 2014 where that is one phase where I felt like, you know, when as a batsman you know you are going to get out in the morning when you wake up,” Kohli told Pietersen. “That was the time I felt like that: that there is no chance I am getting runs. And still to get out of bed and just get dressed for the game and to go out there and go through that, knowing that you will fail was something that ate me up. It just demolished me completely. And I promised myself I am never going to allow myself to feel like ever again in life.”Kohli now wants India’s young cricketers not to commit the same mistake. “And that happened, for all the younger guys listening, because I was too focused on doing well from a personal point of view. I wanted to get runs. I could never think of what does the team want me to do in this situation. I just got too engulfed with England tour – if I perform here, Test cricket, in my mind I’m going to feel established and all that crap on the outside, which is not important at all. It just ate me up. I just kept going into a downward spiral and I just couldn’t get out of it. Horrible.”Kohli said he was able to pick himself up and become the best all-format batsman in the world because he opened his mind and started focusing on what his team needed more than what he needed.Later, when Pietersen inquired about whether Kohli’s training routine ahead of a match day, he said it was just a mental thing and once again warned against being “self-centered.””With technique also, everything is mental. You have played in a time where you were walking and hitting fast bowlers. Coaches don’t teach you that. So it’s innovation. It’s staying one step ahead of the opponent. If you are thinking about how to win the game for your team, these things come to you.”If you are too personal in your approach, if you are too self-centered, you are just thinking about yourself, then you are just looking for ways to get out eventually because people are going to find you out. You are not getting out of your comfort zone because you don’t want to fail.”Kevin Pietersen and Virat Kohli catch up before the match•IDI via Getty Images

When and why did Kohli turn vegetarian?By the time Kohli returned for his next Test series in England, in 2018, he had not only improved his skill levels, he also decided to become a vegetarian. Pietersen, who had seen Kohli enjoy meat when they were team-mates at Royal Challengers Bangalore, was curious to know about the transformation.”I wasn’t a vegetarian till 2018,” Kohli said. “When we actually came to England, I left eating meat just before the Test series started.”Kohli went to talk about a medical condition that prompted him to become vegetarian. “In 2018 when we went to South Africa I got a cervical spine issue, while playing a Test match at Centurion…one of the discs in my cervical spine bulged out and it compressed a nerve which was running straight till the little finger of my right hand. So it gave me a tingling sensation, I could barely feel my little finger on the right hand. It was hurting like mad, I could hardly sleep at night. And then I got my tests done.”My stomach was too acidic, my body was creating too much uric acid, my body was too acidic. What was happening was, even though I was taking calcium, magnesium everything, one tablet was not sufficient for my body to function properly. So my stomach started pulling calcium from my bones, and my bones got weaker. That’s why I got this issue. That’s why I stopped eating meat completely in the middle of the England tour to cut down the uric acid and the acidity in my body.”The biggest difference that has made, Kohli said, was that it made recovery between matches quicker. “I’ve never felt better in my life, it felt amazing, it’s been two years, and the best decision of my life. I have never felt better waking up. I have never felt better when I have to recover after a game. If you make me play three games a week, which are intense, I am at 120% every game. I can recover within a day after a Test match and go on another Test match.”It’s so much better than being on meat. Being vegetarian now made me feel, honestly I felt like why didn’t I do it before? I should have done it two-three years earlier, to be honest. It’s completely changed everything – you start feeling better, you start thinking better, your body is lighter, you are more positive, you have energy to do more, so, overall it’s just been an amazing, amazing change.”Kohli’s most “fun” batting performanceKohli has played perhaps the greatest innings by an Indian batsman in T20Is – a half-century against Australia in the 2016 World T20. That was right after he played a starring role in that same tournament against Pakistan with politicians, actors, everyone including his idol Sachin Tendulkar watching from the stands. But when asked what was his most “fun innings”, Kohli picked out a lesser known classic.”It was against Kings XI in the IPL. It was I think, a 13… 14 over game or a 15 over game and I got a hundred in 12 overs. That was one of the days where I felt like Jeez, I’m just connecting everything and I just felt like I couldn’t get out. And I’ve never felt like that before. Just to be able to hit and not have that fear of getting out. It was amazing. So that has been my most fun innings.”
