Can Scorchers deal with Ashes exodus?

A closer look at how Perth Scorchers, Brisbane Heat, Adelaide Strikers and Hobart Hurricanes have built up to the 2017-18 season of the BBL

Alex Malcolm17-Dec-20171:42

The Perth Scorchers tell us why they’re so good

Perth Scorchers

What you need to knowLast year’s champions, and the league’s most successful franchise with three titles from six editions, have a very similar squad to last season. But Justin Langer’s group faces some challenges on a number of fronts. Firstly, the top order has been compromised by national service for the first half of the tournament at least. Shaun Marsh, Cameron Bancroft and Mitchell Marsh would all ordinarily occupy roles in the top six and Bancroft would likely keep wicket due to the long-term injury to Sam Whiteman, who also filled an important opening role in the final last season.Ian Bell hasn’t returned and the Scorchers will need to experiment around their veteran opener Michael Klinger. Josh Inglis will take the gloves and has the talent and temperament to open but he is set to be shifted around the order depending on the needs of the side. England International David Willey is a viable option while the Test matches are still going. He opened the batting to great effect in the Scorchers’ practice match at Optus Stadium against the England Lions and has had great success in the role for Northants prior to moving to Yorkshire. He will also form part of a formidable attack if all are fit and firing. But question marks surround the fitness of Nathan Coulter-Nile and Jason Behrendorff, who opened the bowling together in Australia’s last T20I. Coulter-Nile is edging closer to a return from a hot spot in his back but Behrendorff is still resting a similar injury and his return date is unknown.Key playerKlinger remains the key man for the Scorchers. Their attack, no matter the composition, will always be able to blow away top orders, particularly at the WACA. But Klinger’s skill and adaptability on all surfaces, both setting totals and chasing, is pivotal to the Scorchers’ ability to compile winning scores.ChancesThe Scorchers are likely to be right there at the business end again. They have never finished worse than third and have made the final in five out of six seasons. They are so hard to beat at the WACA and should find enough away wins to qualify for the knockouts. They have the experience and the talent to go back-to-back.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Brisbane Heat

What you need to knowThe Heat were the surprise packet of last year’s tournament and went within a Super Over of playing the final. Brendon McCullum is a proven winner and he is sure to sprinkle some of his magic over the Heat again after winning the Bangladesh Premier League only a week ago playing for the Rangpur Riders alongside Chris Gayle.McCullum is in good nick as well, coming off 78 in the semi-final and 51 not out in the final. He and Chris Lynn form the backbone of the batting. Lynn appears healthy after forgoing first-class cricket to rehabilitate his long-term shoulder injury. He is learning to throw with his opposite arm to reduce risk of further damage. The danger for the Heat is that if the “Bash Brothers” misfire on the same night, the batting depth isn’t quite as potent as some of the other line-ups.There has been a shift in philosophy from a bowling perspective. Coach Daniel Vettori clearly sees value in legspin at the Gabba and in the BBL in general, adding the young Pakistan wristspinner Shadab Khan to the roster alongside the highly regarded Queensland youngster Mitchell Swepson. They have also signed the experienced Test legspinner Yasir Shah as a replacement player for Shadab, who is likely to be called up to Pakistan’s limited-overs squads for their January tour of New Zealand.Key playerInstinctively it would be Lynn who holds the key to the Heat’s chances but McCullum‘s value goes beyond just his power-hitting. His leadership and tactical nous are two intangibles for this team as they were when he led New Zealand in international cricket. He has an incredible knack of getting the very best out of his players and his group as a collective. He reads the game as well as, if not better than, any other captain in the tournament. Good captaincy in T20 cricket can have a greater impact than in almost any other format although more luck is probably required than the longer forms of the game.ChancesThe Heat have won the tournament previously, coming from fourth to beat the Scorchers at the WACA in the 2012-13 final. But outside of last year’s semi-final heartbreak they have not had a major impact in the other four editions. On paper the squad does not look as strong as others, but McCullum and Vettori bring experience in getting their teams to punch above their weight.Getty Images

Adelaide Strikers

What you need to knowJason Gillespie and the Strikers management have opted for a complete overhaul of their squad and the result is they have a lot of young talent but not a lot of experience. They have lost their two highest run-scorers from last season in Ben Dunk and Brad Hodge, and signed Jonathan Wells (Hurricanes) and the South African Colin Ingram in their place. The bulk of the run-scoring will need to be done by the South Australian trio of Travis Head, Jake Weatherald and Alex Carey. Weatherald and Carey provided a lethal combination for the Redbacks in the JLT One-Day Cup, Australia’s domestic 50-over competition, but the BBL is a different beast. Carey is not as experienced in T20 batting but has the talent to be a replacement for Dunk.Peter Siddle brings some experience with the ball, while the speed of Billy Stanlake and the smarts of Ben Laughlin and Michael Neser give the Strikers the basis of a good attack at the Adelaide Oval. The Afghanistan wristspinner Rashid Khan could be an X-factor. Adil Rashid and Ish Sodhi have both bowled well previously for the Strikers. Rashid and the young West Australian legspinner Liam O’Connor will have roles to play.Key playerWeatherald needs to have a tournament like Ben Dunk did last season and he’s capable of doing it. He is powerful stroke-maker off both feet but also has developed his batting craft in all formats. The left-hander has been in red-hot form in domestic cricket this season and a big tournament would not only give the Strikers a chance, but also put him right in the frame to play for Australia.ChancesOn paper the Strikers look like one of the weaker squads in the BBL mainly due to inexperience rather than lack of talent. The BBL winners in previous seasons have proven that experience counts for a great deal in the big moments. They will need some of their young talent to step up to avoid this season being a development year.Getty Images

Hobart Hurricanes

What you need to knowThe Hurricanes have not made the BBL final since the 2013-14 season but Tasmanian cricket has made some big changes during the winter, one of which was to acquire Gary Kirsten as the new coach. The Hurricanes have assembled a unique squad that has produced some impressive results during the warm-up matches. The loss of Tim Paine to Test-match duty forced a late trade with the Renegades for wicketkeeper Matthew Wade. But Paine’s dual role as an opener also requires filling. The addition of Alex Doolan has almost gone unnoticed given his relatively poor T20 record, but he enters the tournament in good form having put together two quick-fire 50-plus opening stands with D’Arcy Short in the practice matches.George Bailey, Matthew Wade, Ben McDermott and Daniel Christian look like a solid and versatile middle-order combination. They appear to be thin on power-hitting in the lower order, but what they lack in pyrotechnics with the bat they more than make up for with electric pace with the ball.Tymal Mills, Jofra Archer and Aaron Summers can all crank it up to above 140kph and they made a mess of the Stars top order in the last practice match. Cameron Boyce’s legspin, Clive Rose’s left-arm orthodox and Short’s left-arm wristspin also give the attack good variety.Key playerD’Arcy Short turned heads last season with a couple of scintillating displays out of the blue. He could be a match-winner for the Hurricanes. He is an unorthodox left-hander who stays leg-side of the ball and hits powerfully through and over the off side and he’s an excellent player against pace and short-pitched bowling. But with some maturity has come some craft and he now knows how to slip up and down the gears depending on the situation. His left-arm wristspin is also a handy asset for George Bailey.ChancesNot many will look at the Hurricanes on paper and see a tournament contender but on evidence of their performances in the practice matches they look a force to be reckoned with after handling the Sixers and Stars with ease. The only weak spot is batting depth but their attack could win games on their own. They will be a great team to watch this tournament.

David Willey to retire from international cricket after World Cup

Left-arm seamer to focus on franchises opportunities after missing out on ECB contract

Matt Roller01-Nov-2023David Willey has announced that he will retire from international cricket at the age of 33 after England’s final match at the World Cup in India, following the ECB’s decision not to offer him a central contract for the 2023-24 cycle.Willey is among the few England players who have enhanced their reputation over the last four weeks in India, taking five wickets at 27.20 and hitting 42 runs from the lower order in his three appearances since he came into the side for their heavy defeat to South Africa in Mumbai. But he was “not best pleased”, in the words of Rob Key, to be the only member of their World Cup squad who did not feature in the list of 26 central contracts announced in Bangalore last week. Even with a T20 World Cup on the horizon next June, he has decided to quit international cricket for good.”I never wanted this day to come,” Willey wrote in a post on his Instagram page. “From a young boy, I’ve only ever dreamed of playing cricket for England. So, with careful thought and consideration, it is with great regret that I feel the time has come for me to retire from all forms of international cricket at the end of the World Cup.”I have worn the shirt with immense pride and given my absolute everything to the badge on my chest. I’ve been very lucky to be a part of such an incredible white ball team with some of the best players in the world. I’ve made some special memories and great friends along the way and been through some very difficult times.”To my wife, two children, mum and dad, I wouldn’t have been able to follow my dreams without your sacrifice and unwavering support throughout. Thank you for sharing the special memories and picking up the pieces when I’ve fallen apart – I’m eternally grateful.”Related

Willey said that he will continue to give “my everything and more” in England’s final three group games against Australia, Netherlands and Pakistan. “I feel I still have a lot more to give on and off the field while I am still playing my best cricket, and my decision has nothing to do with our performance during the World Cup,” he said. The timing of Willey’s decision is not helpful for England as they look to finish a miserable World Cup campaign on a high following five defeats in their first six games. “There’s no hiding from it,” Mark Wood told the BBC on Wednesday. “We have got to try and stick together as a team and in these last three games, try and get some sort of positive outcome.”Willey will continue to play short-form cricket at home and around the world. He captained Northamptonshire in the T20 Blast last year and represented Welsh Fire in the Hundred, and is due to play for Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in the ILT20 in January. He may also be retained by Royal Challengers Bangalore ahead of next year’s IPL.”Being completely honest, knowing and being able to plan a calendar year with all the cricket that’s going on will be helpful,” Willey told England’s social media channels. “It’s difficult, never knowing whether you’re involved. Spending some time with the family will be top of my list and I look forward to the opportunities that are ahead.”Willey made his England debut in a no-result against Ireland in Malahide in May 2015, shortly after their group-stage elimination World Cup, and became a regular member of their white-ball squads as part of their rebuild under Eoin Morgan, Trevor Bayliss and Andrew Strauss. He has so far claimed 94 wickets in 70 ODIs, and a further 51 in 43 T20Is, the last of which came at Canberra in October 2022.David Willey was part of the England squad that won the 2022 T20 World Cup•Getty ImagesHe was part of the side that finished second at the 2016 World T20, taking 3 for 20 in England’s last-gasp defeat to West Indies in the final, and was named in their provisional squad for the 2019 World Cup, but was brutally dropped at the last minute to accommodate Jofra Archer’s selection.Willey assumed that marked the end of his international career, but was recalled for an ODI series against Ireland in 2020 and was their second-highest wicket-taker in the format between World Cups. He was also an unused squad member at both the 2021 and 2022 T20 World Cups.He was left out at the start of the ongoing 50-over World Cup, but has impressed since coming into the side, most recently dismissing Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav while taking 3 for 45 in Sunday’s defeat against India. “I’m sure everybody who knows me does not doubt that, whatever my involvement in the remainder of this campaign, I will give my everything and more,” he said. “That’s the only way I know.”Key said in a statement: “Playing over 100 white-ball games for your country is a massive achievement and something David can be immensely proud of. He has given everything he has to England, every time he’s taken to the field, and I’d like to thank him for all that he’s done over many years. I wish him all the very best for the future.”

Amorim must now axe 5/10 Man Utd dud who lost the ball every 3 touches

On the balance of play, a 1-1 draw was a fair final outcome on Sunday evening as Manchester United and Arsenal both had their moments in the Premier League contest.

The visitors were ultimately punished in the first half for their lack of bite when Bruno Fernandes beautifully put away a free-kick in added-on time, whilst Declan Rice made sure the Red Devils would rue their own missed opportunities in the second 45 minutes when the ex-West Ham United titan powered home an equaliser.

Ruben Amorim would have lots of positives to hang onto at the full-time whistle despite the points being shared, with Fernandes sticking out once more as an obvious top performer for his underachieving team.

Man United's best performers vs Arsenal

Fernandes once again lit up Old Trafford with a terrific attacking display, with the free-kick effort sailing past David Raya for his sixth strike of the unfolding Premier League season.

With seven assists also next to his name, it’s clear that the 30-year-old is a key individual that Amorim relies on, especially when Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund are misfiring.

Whilst both Zirkzee and Hojlund failed to impress once more in an attacking capacity – the latter notably messing up a huge late chance to win the game as he was tackled by Rice – the likes of Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot very much did impress.

Indeed, the Moroccan wing-back notching up three key passes come full-time, whilst his left-sided counterpart would create one big chance himself away from valiantly defending.

But, whilst there were glimmers of hope on display to suggest United can push up the league away from an unsatisfactory 14th spot, there were other stale performances on show as this experienced Red Devils head struggled to ever get going against the Gunners.

Man United's worst performer against Arsenal

Fernandes has definitely cemented himself as a regular starter, but it’s his attacking midfield teammate Christian Eriksen who will worry for his spot in Amorim’s XIs moving forward, having put in a rather forgettable performance against Mikel Arteta’s opponents.

Indeed, the number 14 failed to attempt a single dribble all match as a timid performer partnering the classy Fernandes, alongside also never testing Raya with a single effort on goal. To make matter worse, he also had fewer touches than Andre Onana (53).

It was a weak display from the ageing Dane in every department, with seven of his 25 passes going astray, leading to possession being given up 11 times, once every three touches.

Moreover, it could be argued that his inability to get stuck in – which saw him just one duel all game – cost his team dear when Rice struck home his fierce effort, with Eriksen the closest man to the England international but doing very little to stop him levelling proceedings.

He could find his starting spot taken up by someone fresher in games to come consequently, with Gary Neville calling for the United squad to be “ripped up” in the near future, and Eriksen is just one face who might well be moved on as his contract expires this summer.

Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst handed out a poor 5/10 rating to Eriksen after the game, stating that he did “very little” when the ball was at his feet, which is in-keeping with his lacklustre season to date with just one assist coming his way in the league.

Whilst certain individuals continue to show they deserve to stick it out for the foreseeable at Old Trafford, others look very close to the exit door, with Eriksen very much deep now in that unwanted group.

Royals trade Padikkal for Super Giants' Avesh in straight swap

This will be the third franchise in the IPL for either player, and comes after Super Giants traded Romario Shepherd to Mumbai Indians

Avesh Khan is in the India squad for the T20I series against Australia•BCCI

Fast bowler Avesh Khan is set to make a move to Rajasthan Royals from Lucknow Super Giants, who will acquire top-order batter Devdutt Padikkal in a straight trade swap ahead of IPL 2024. ESPNcricinfo has learned that the franchises and players agreed on the trade in the past week with the BCCI set to put a stamp on the swap this week.Avesh, who is part of the India squad for the T20I series against Australia starting Thursday, was bought by Super Giants in the mega auction in 2022 for INR 10 crore (US$ 1.2 million approx.). Royals, meanwhile paid INR 7.75 crore (US$ 945,000 approx.) for Padikkal. Both the players were retained by the respective franchises this year.Despite bright starts to their IPL careers, both players had a lean time of it in 2023.Related

It was especially disappointing for Padikkal, who, despite playing every match for his team in 2022 (17) and 11 games in 2023, struggled to fulfil the top-order role Royals had assigned to him. In 28 matches in these two seasons, Padikkal scored 637 runs at an average of 23.59 and a strike rate of 125.88 with just three half-centuries. Overall, Padikkal has scored 2768 runs in 92 IPL games at 33.34 with 17 fifties and three centuries striking at 133.52.Super Giants will be the third franchise for Padikkal, who started his IPL journey with his hometown franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore where he spent two seasons (2020 and 21).For Avesh, too, Royals will be the third franchise after he debuted at Delhi Capitals: in 2021, he was the second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 24 wickets at 18.75. After Capitals released him ahead of the mega auction, Super Giants bid fiercely to buy Avesh in a four-way bidding war. He finished the 2022 season as Super Giants’ highest wicket-taker, helping them make the playoffs in their inaugural IPL season. However, on the slow and underprepared pitches in Lucknow, Avesh struggled in 2023. Failing to finish his full quota of four overs in five of the nine games he played, Avesh finished the 2023 season with just eight wickets at 35.37, going at an economy of 9.75.Avesh, who turns 27 in December, will be hungry to reclaim his confidence at Royals, whose Indian fast-bowling pack includes Prasidh Krishna, Navdeep Saini, Kuldeep Sen, Sandeep Sharma and KM Asif.”Avesh has proved his mettle in recent years to be one of the top Indian pacers in the country,” Kumar Sangakkara, Royals’ director of cricket, said in a statement. “He has the ability to both swing and seam the ball, and is an effective asset at both the start of the innings and towards the end. He has a lot of variations in his armour which will be extremely valuable in the different conditions that we play in across the country. He will prove to be a valuable addition to our pace-bowling department and we are looking forward to having him contribute to the team’s successes.”This is only the second trade ahead of the 2024 season so far after Super Giants traded Romario Shepherd to Mumbai Indians earlier this month. IPL has set a November 26 deadline for the franchises to announce their retention lists. The player auction for the 2024 season will take place in Dubai on December 19.

Man Utd had Roy Keane 2.0, now Goldbridge thinks he’s a “waste of time”

Manchester United have been in disarray for some time now, struggling to find any consistency, suffering from poor recruitment strategy and leaving the fans with a sour taste in their mouths.

The Red Devils currently sit 15th in the Premier League after 25 games played, just 12 points off of 18th place Ipswich and 15 points off of fourth place Manchester City.

Ruben Amorim’s side are averaging 53.6% possession (sixth highest in the division), taking 13.4 shots per game (12th highest in the division) and are conceding 11.4 shots against them per game (seventh fewest in the division).

When things really aren’t going your way, you sometimes need the big characters in the dressing room to step up, lead the team, lead by example and get you out of a bad spot. The main issue with this, is Man Utd don’t seem to have many of these characters at the club anymore.

Roy Keane's record Manchester United

Roy Keane, perhaps one of the biggest types of this character, made 479 appearances for Manchester United, scoring 51 goals, providing 41 assists and totalling 40,275 minutes played.

First Impressions

In this time, Keane captained a historic United side to the famous treble, winning the Premier League, the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League in 1998/99.

Whilst the Irishman was hot-headed, his teammates clearly respected him, giving their all on the pitch, being led by Keane, with many regarding the United legend as the “best captain they have ever seen”.

Manchester United did sign a midfielder who was compared to Keane in the 2022/23 campaign, with Teddy Sheringham comparing the two players, but since having a brilliant first season at the club, his rapid demise has been clear for all to see.

Man Utd's new Roy Keane

Casemiro was signed for a fee of around £60m plus £10m in add-ons from Real Madrid in 2022 and has made 108 appearances for the Red Devils since joining the club, scoring 15 goals, providing nine assists and totalling 8,020 minutes played.

In his first campaign at Old Trafford, the experienced Brazilian was hugely influential – notably scoring in the club’s Carabao Cup triumph – with Sheringham highlighting the likeness between him and the talismanic Keane:

You can see in Casemiro’s three years at the club, the gradual decline in all areas. The only metric Casemiro ranks higher in this season than either of his previous two seasons is tackles per 90, and that is with far fewer minutes played, slightly skewing the data.

It has gotten to the point where Casemiro’s legs are seemingly gone, the United system is becoming more and more reliant on ground covering and physical qualities, and content creator Mark Goldbridge has now labelled the Brazilian a “total waste of time”, following the defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

Manchester United clearly need to get rid of players before they can buy, and not only getting the right profile but also the right mentality of players will be key if the Red Devils want to have any chance of returning to the top.

Casemiro may have indicated his desire to see out his contract – which runs out in 2026 – yet Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co need to do all they can to shift the £350k-per-week star from the wage bill.

Ackermann keeps Foxes in the hunt in promotion face-off against Sussex

Leicestershire build solid foundation after being set 499 to win at Hove

ECB Reporters Network12-Sep-2023

Colin Ackermann scored a double-century at Hove last season•Getty Images

An unbeaten century from Colin Ackermann kept Leicestershire in the hunt for an unlikely victory that would reignite their promotion challenge in the LV= Insurance County Championship. Ackermann was 103 not out at stumps on day three at Hove with his side on 221 for 3 and requiring a further 278 to beat Sussex. The Hove pitch has certainly flattened out after 20 wickets fell in the first four sessions and Leicestershire were scuttled for 108 in their first innings. But it would still be a considerable achievement were the Foxes to deny Sussex a win that would kick-start their own promotion bid. The new ball, due after 16 overs on the final day, will be crucial in shaping the outcome.Leicestershire will take encouragement from the fact that they chased 389 to beat Yorkshire at the start of the season while Sussex know all too well how much Ackermann loves batting at the 1st Central County Ground, where he made an unbeaten 277 last season. They had declared their second innings on 344 for 9 in the over after lunch – setting a target of 499 – and soon made inroads into the Leicestershire top order.Indian left-armer Jaydev Unadkat pinned Sol Budinger in the fifth over and Ari Karvelas had skipper Lewis Hill smartly taken low down at third slip by Tom Clark in the eighth over to leave the Foxes on 16 for 2. But Rishi Patel and Ackermann joined forces to put on 92 in 21 overs with few alarms. Sussex skipper Cheteshwar Pujara had employed his fifth bowler by the 15th over and four overs before tea offspinner Jack Carson settled into a long, occasionally probing but so far unproductive spell from the Sea End.By then Karvelas had made a crucial breakthrough when Patel miscued a drive to mid-off and Pujara took a good tumbling catch but that was the last success Sussex enjoyed in the day as Pakistan left-hander Umar Amin joined Ackermann in a stand so far worth 113.Ackermann, who is joining Durham at the end of the season, reached his third hundred of the summer with a single off James Coles and so far he has faced 155 balls, hitting 16 fours. Before the close Henry Crocombe was bowling short to four fielders stationed within 20 yards of each other short on the leg side but Amin relished the battle, reaching his first fifty for the county he has joined for the last four Championship games of the season.Ackermann, meanwhile, needs another 48 runs to reach 1000 runs for the season – Patel having got to the milestone when he top scored with 48 in Leicestershire’s first innings.Earlier, Sussex added 90 runs before their declaration and with time on their side there was never any need to take undue risks before setting such a massive target.James Coles reached his fourth fifty of the season with a six over long-on off Rehan Ahmed, adding 58 with Fynn Hudson-Prentice before becoming one of two victims for the persevering Tom Scriven, who finished with 4 for 55 and took up the slack with Matt Salisbury, who took five wickets in Sussex’s first innings, unable to bowl because of a hamstring injury. He trapped Coles and Jack Carson with late inswing while Hudson-Prentice was held at second slip by Ackermann off Scott Currie. Sussex declared when Karvelas was run out off the fifth ball of the afternoon session.

Both clubs have struggled in the Premier League this season, making the FA Cup a welcome distraction and a real chance to save their campaign with silverware.

Man Utd v Leicester City team news Man Utd

The Red Devils were without Jonny Evans, Mason Mount and Luke Shaw last time out, and none of the trio look likely to feature at Old Trafford on Friday. A first appearance for January signing Patrick Dorgu could be one to keep an eye on, though.

United were also handed a new serious injury concern to Lisandro Martinez, who was stretched off against Crystal Palace and looks set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Leicester City

Long-term absentees at Leicester City are Issahaku Fatawu, Ricardo Pereira, Nathaniel Opoku and Wilfred Ndidi, however, Ndidi has been back in training and van Nistelrooy has confirmed the Nigerian will return to the squad against Man Utd.

When asked about any more injuries, van Nistelrooy said: “There are two or three with light injuries who will be assessed.”

Where to watch Man Utd v Leicester City on TV

For viewers in the UK, the game will be shown live on ITV1, STV, ITVX and STV Player on Friday 7 February with kick-off at 8pm (GMT).

In the USA, the match will be streamed on ESPN+, and in Canada, live on TV with channel Sportsnet.

Man Utd v Leicester City referee and is there VAR?

Interestingly, the FA has decided this season that VAR will only be introduced from the fifth round of the FA Cup onwards, meaning fans won’t have to worry about it on Friday evening.

The man whose decision will be final is referee Michael Salisbury. He will be assisted by Matthew Wilkes and Steven Meredith, with Thomas Bramall as the fourth official.

Salisbury has taken charge of four games for both clubs, and as can be seen, the Red Devils enjoy having the 40-year-old as the man in the middle with a 100% win ratio.

Things haven’t exactly gone to plan for van Nistelrooy at the King Power Stadium so far, with the Foxes coming into the cup encounter off the back of a heavy 4-0 defeat to Everton.

The highlight of 2025 was certainly the 2-1 win at Tottenham which took them out of the relegation zone, however, they are now back in the bottom three and in real danger of an immediate return to the Championship.

Man Utd v Leicester City head-to-head

This will be just the fourth time these two sides have faced off against each other in the FA Cup. The first two meetings were back in 1963 and 1976, both won by the Red Devils.

The last FA Cup clash was in 2021 at the quarter-final stages, where Leicester ran out 3-1 winners thanks to two goals from Kelechi Iheanacho and one from Youri Tielemans. Overall, though, Manchester United have more wins against Leicester throughout history.
