Ajinkya Rahane: Draw at SCG 'as good as winning a Test match'

Praises Pant, Ashwin, and Vihari for chipping in ‘for the team’s cause’ amid raft of injury concerns

Sidharth Monga11-Jan-2021To Ajinkya Rahane, who remains unbeaten as India’s Test captain thanks to the amazing rearguard to bat out 131 overs in the fourth innings of the SCG Test, the draw is as good as a win. India had to fight great odds as they started with an already depleted side but then Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant, Hanuma Vihari and Ravichandran Ashwin sustained injuries during the Test.”For me this is as good as winning a Test match,” Rahane said. “When you come abroad and play a match like this, it was really special. Credit to [Hanuma] Vihari, [R] Ashwin, the way he batted, [Cheteshwar] Pujara, Rohit [Sharma] at the start and also Rishabh [Pant]. I think everyone chipped in for the team’s cause but credit to those two guys who batted almost two-and-a-half house till the end.”In the end, with five wickets still in hand, the match might not have reached the thrilling crescendo some of the great Tests do, but Rahane said the afterglow of this draw will be bright. “I am extremely proud of the way we played and I think the whole nation would be proud of us with the way we have played after Adelaide,” Rahane said. “Melbourne and today, these were different games, we made a good
comeback with a win.”If we have to talk about today, Australia was dominating in the first innings but from 200 for 2, they were all out for 330. Credit goes to our bowling unit for taking the last eight wickets in 130-odd runs. Obviously they batted well in the second innings but I think today will end up being one of the most memorable days in Indian cricket. Perhaps we cannot get the magnitude of today’s achievement right away but possibly after the series we will realise it.Rahane: ‘Perhaps we cannot get the magnitude of today’s achievement right away but possibly after the series we will realise it’•Getty Images

“It was a special day for me as a captain. I believe that we cannot really control the result but it’s imperative to fight till the end. That’s the main thing I’ve learnt in cricket, to keep fighting till the end. This Test match was almost similar. That’s why the result is as good as a win for us. When we play overseas and save such a match, it’s a special feeling and I am proud of everyone, the players and the management.”One of the moves Rahane made as captain was to promote Pant ahead of Vihari to partner with Pujara. Rahane said it put a right-left combination and also split two batsmen who rely more on defence. “About Rishabh’s batting number, we discussed and had that strategy and that paid off but credit to him,” Rahane said. “Going out there at No. 5 – the captain or the team management can make strategies – but in the end it’s up to that individual to actually go out there and deliver for your team and Rishabh did that for us. The way he counter-attacked, the way he actually managed his innings throughout the day was really good to see.”About his character, we know that he can actually win games for us from any situation. We have that belief in any him. I think he is improving day by day as a cricketer, which is a very good sign.”Vihari, who batted at No. 6 because of the move, ended up injuring his hamstring but batted out 161 balls to see India through to safety. “We knew Vihari was batting well throughout the last three Test matches,” Rahane said. “Unfortunately he couldn’t get those big scores. Today, we all saw a special knock. I thought his knock was more special than his hundred. The way he batted after getting injured, to show that motivation, that hunger, to hang in there for your team was really good and that’s what we want from each and every individual.”To show that character on the field, because it’s all about what the team wants. Credit to him, the way he handled himself. There was pressure, yes, but the way he managed his batting, his injury, it was really special to see.”

Canada defeated Venezuela in a penalty shootout Friday evening, advancing to the Copa America semifinals next week.

An early first half strike from Jacob Shaffelburg set the tone. The Nashville SC winger fired home from close-range just 14-minutes into the match – the only effort bagged between the two teams through the first hour.

In the 65th minute, however, Venezuela's all-time leading scorer Salomon Rondon launched a lobbed effort over the head of Canada goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau from nearly 40-yards away from the net to level the contest.

Ending regulation at a 1-1 draw, the match went on to penalty kicks, where Canada's Ismael Kone scored the winning spot-kick in a 4-3 shootout victory.

    THE MVP

    Jacob Shaffelburg:

The Nashville SC winger was absolutely electric all evening, proving to be a menace in both the final-third and tracking back defensively. Add his goal to the mix, and it's a proper Man of the Match performance.

He may have only logged 60 minutes, but it was a really impressive showing from the 24-year-old, who continues to look like key part of Les Rouges under Jesse Marsch.

    THE BIG LOSER

    Maxime Crepeau:

An absolute goalkeeping howler from the Portland Timbers goalkeeper in the second half. One has to question his judgement in the moment, as he was bafflingly far off of his goal-line.

Moments like that define matches, and for someone as experienced as Crepeau, he should know better in that situation. His naive moment allowed Venezuela back into the match, taking the game to penalties.

Redemption may have arrived in the shootout, where Crepeau made two saves, but it should never have gotten that far to begin with.

Najmul Hossain Shanto's fifty sets up Rajshahi's emphatic win

The captain’s burst in the powerplay anchored a six-wicket win against Gemcon Khulna, while Gazi Group Chattogram thrashed Beximco Dhaka

Mohammad Isam26-Nov-2020
Minister Group Rajshahi made it two wins out of two with their six-wicket win over Gemcon Khulna. Their captain Najmul Hossain Shanto’s burst in the powerplay, which saw him hitting his first half-century of the Bangabandhu T20 Cup, clinched the game for Rajshahi.Shanto struck three sixes and six fours in his 34-ball 55, as he added 47 runs for the second wicket with Rony Talukdar, who struck a six and three fours in his 26. Shanto fell in the 11th over, lbw to legspinner Rishad Hossain, but Mohammad Ashraful and Fazle Mahmud took them towards the target, before Nurul Hasan got them home with 2.4 overs to spare.Rishad took two wickets while Al-Amin Hossain, who bowled just two overs, and Shahidul Islam took one wicket each.Khulna made 146 for 6 after a late boost of runs from Ariful Haque, the hero of their opening-day win over Fortune Barishal. Ariful slammed two sixes in the penultimate over, in which young pace bowler Mukidul Islam went for 17 runs after bowling three wide balls at the start of the over. Ariful and Shahidul Islam added 42 runs for the unbroken seventh wicket, which spruced up Khulna’s innings that was mostly lackluster.Opener Imrul Kayes was the first to go, caught at short fine-leg after mistiming a sweep off Mahedi Hasan. Shakib Al Hasan, too, got caught playing across the line against Mukidul, at deep square-leg in the fifth over. The Khulna innings unravelled further when Anamul Haque, having made 26 with three fours and a six, was run out in the eighth over. Jahurul Islam and captain Mahmudullah fell in the next two overs respectively, as they slipped to 51 for five in the tenth over. Young left-hander Shamim Hossain revived the innings somewhat, with a 25-ball 35 that had three fours and two sixes. He fell to Ebadot Hossain’s bouncer shortly after hitting his second six, leaving Ariful to play out the last 4.5 overs with the tail.
Gazi Group Chattogram blew Beximco Dhaka away by nine wickets, after bowling them out for a paltry 88. Chattogram reached the target in 10.5 overs, making it one of the biggest wins in Mirpur in terms of balls remaining. Chattogram’s big win will worry the rest of the field in a tournament where the five teams have very little room to make changes to their rosters.Chattogram’s decision to bowl first was vindicated when left-arm quick Shoriful Islam had his Under-19 teammate Tanzid Hasan in the second over, caught at slip with a fine away-going delivery. It followed an infuriating period for Sabbir Rahman, who struggled for nine balls before skying Shoriful in the covers for a duck. But Dhaka had worse luck when their captain Mushfiqur Rahim, uncharacteristically, gave Soumya an easy grab at slip after his attempted reverse-sweep, off the first ball he faced, went awry.Mohammad Naim and Akbar Ali provided a brief respite with their 44-run fourth wicket stand but Mosaddek Hossain bowled both of them in the space of three deliveries. Chattogram hardly gave them an inch afterwards, bowling them out for 88 in 16.2 overs.
Apart from Shoriful and Mosaddek’s miserly figures, Mustafizur Rahman and Taijul Islam also took two wickets each while Nahidul Islam, who took the prized wicket of Mushfiqur, and Soumya Sarkar got one each.
Soumya and Liton played a range of attractive strokes, including lofted straight drives and punches through cover. They reached 51 in the Powerplay, before taking them to 79, when Liton got out for 34. Soumya remained unbeaten on 44 off 29 balls with four boundaries and two sixes.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Following a top 2022/23 season, Rashford's form over the last season has fallen off a cliff as he failed to lift Manchester United's faltering offensive line and managed just eight goals in all competitions. PSG have shown interest in the winger as they look forward to a life post Kylian Mbappe's departure.

As per talkSPORT, PSG have reignited their interest in Rashford after losing hope of signing Napoli star Victor Osimhen. Manager Luis Enrique would also rather sign a winger rather than a striker, as he would prefer to trust the likes of Goncalo Ramos and Randal Kolo Muani to perform centrally.

The Red Devils are ready to let the 26-year-old winger go with new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe open to a sale in a bid to raise funds for further signings for the 20-time Premier League winners. United are not desperate to offload Rashford but would not stand in his way if a big money offer does arrive this summer.

Haider and Sharafu lead UAE to historic series win against Bangladesh

It is UAE’s second T20I series win against a Full Member team, having beaten Ireland 2-1 in 2021

Mohammad Isam21-May-2025Alishan Sharafu’s composed half-century under pressure and Haider Ali’s splendid spell of 3 for 7 led UAE to a historic series win against Bangladesh in Sharjah. The hosts chased down 163 with seven wickets in hand to clinch the series 2-1, having already beaten the visitors by two wickets on Monday. It is UAE’s second T20I series win against a Full Member team, having beaten Ireland by the same margin in 2021.Left-arm spinner Haider led the charge to reduce Bangladesh to 84 for 8, before they recovered to reach 162 for 9. Bangladesh, however, couldn’t quite use the momentum with the ball, as Sharafu, only 22, struck his eighth half-century in T20Is to anchor the chase. He struck five fours and three sixes in his unbeaten 47-ball 68 as the chase went down to the last over. He added 87 runs for the unbroken fourth-wicket stand with Asif Khan, who damaged Bangladesh with five sixes in his unbeaten 26-ball 41.

Zohaib steps up on Waseem’s off day

UAE didn’t quite get their chase off to the best of starts, though. After consecutive fifties in the first two games, captain Muhammad Waseem fell early in for 9 this time. Shoriful Islam got him to drive at a slightly wide one, edging to Tanzid Hasan at slip. Muhammad Zohaib then struck Hasan Mahmud for consecutive sixes in the fifth over, both times hitting through the line, one over long-on, and the other through extra cover.Sharafu got his big-hitting going with a top-edged six off Tanzim Hasan in the seventh over, before Rishad Hossain cleaned up Zohaib for 29 with one that spun back into the left-hand batter. Rahul Chopra was the next to go just after the halfway mark, heaving at a slower bouncer from Tanzim to midwicket for 13.

Sharafu aces the chase

Sharafu didn’t get bothered by UAE being three down and the equation reading 84 required off 56. He ramped Tanzim for a six over deep third two balls after Chopra’s wicket. He pinged the same bowler in his next over for a four through point, but then UAE were kept quiet for about 16 deliveries that left UAE to get 53 to win from 30.Alishan Sharafu led UAE’s chase under pressure•Emirates Cricket Board

Sharafu then hammered Rishad down the ground at the start of the 16th over, with Tanzid parrying the catch at long-off for a six. Asif, always on the prowl for big hits, also smacked Rishad for consecutive sixes in the same over to make it a 19-run over. It brought the required run rate down from 10.60 to 8.50 and 34 to get from the last four.Sharafu finished the next over with a cracking four through the covers and Asif smashed Mahmud over midwicket next ball to bring it close to a run-a-ball equation. With 14 to win from 12, Asif clubbed two more sixes in the penultimate over off Tanzim on the off side before Sharafu aptly struck the winning runs next over, a blistering cover drive off Mahmud.

Haider weaves his magic

Waseem used four different bowlers to bowl the first four overs after winning the toss, and the fourth of those did the trick. Haider struck with his first ball, trapping the Bangladesh captain Litton Das lbw for 14. Litton missed his sweep after going across too far that exposed his middle and leg stumps, but he was disappointed on being given out.Towhid Hridoy was also given out lbw two balls later, as he charged down and missed the ball, which struck the front pad. The raised finger caused pandemonium in the UAE side, with Haider jumping all over the place.Haider finished with a double-wicket maiden, before removing Mahedi Hasan, who was trying to cut against a delivery that came back to hit the top of leg stump. Haider remained accurate in his next two overs too, giving him magical figures in just his third T20I.Asif Khan does the snake gesture as Alishan Sharafu looks on after hitting the winning runs•Emirates Cricket Board

UAE hunt for more wickets

Tanzid batted exactly the opposite to how his team-mates had been going about it. He started with a couple of big hits in the first over, he lofted Matiullah Khan for his second six in the third over, before hammering Dhruv Parashar for consecutive sixes in the fifth over after Bangladesh had lost three wickets. Tanzid sweetly timed two more fours off Akif Raja before the seamer bowled him with the around-the-wicket angle in the seventh over. Both Parashar and Raja supported Haider, as did Matiullah after the halfway mark. Matiullah, who was expensive in the first two games, removed Shamim Hossain and Rishad in the space of four balls. Saghir Khan then had Tanzim caught at long-on, as Bangladesh were in risk of getting bowled out for less than 100.

Jaker scrapes a recovery

Jaker struck a couple of sixes to get Bangladesh past the 100-run mark, all the while needing the physio’s attention due to exhaustion. Mahmud struck Matiullah for his first six in the 18th over, before Jaker struck his third six, a blast down the ground in the penultimate over. Jaker, however, fell next ball, slicing Saghir to deep backward point for an easy catch. No. 11 Shoriful then deposited Saghir over the midwicket fence and Bangladesh had started to put up a respectable total.Waseem’s decision to bowl the last over backfired, as he went for 23 runs in five balls. He was taken off the attack for bowling too many high full-tosses. Sharafu had to complete the over, as his only delivery went for three runs.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

In their 2-1 Copa America loss to Panama, USMNT star Tim Weah was sent off 19 minutes into the match for striking an opposition player in the head. The egregious foul put the U.S. at a massive disadvantage and has put them in a win-or-go-home position heading into the third match of their Group Stage.

CONMEBOL has since suspended the winger an extra match, too, meaning Weah will be our for the quarterfinals if the U.S. qualify as well.

    WHAT WEAH SAID

"I'm good, just a little bit down obviously with the circumstances. I think putting the team in that situation [down to 10 men] was never my intention. I think I'm getting painted to be a violent person – which I'm not – and I think that hurts a lot," Weah aid. "Seeing my brothers kind of have to go a different route to get to our main goal, it really hurts a lot, but the objective stays the same.

"We have a lot of goals set as a team, and I believe in the guys, they're going to get to that final (Copa America) and I'm just here to push them, do the same thing I was doing before, give that energy for the team, make sure the vibes are right, keep everyone smiling. I think that's the most important and I wish them the best, I'm gonna be with them through everything, supporting them and making sure they keep their heads on their shoulders.

"I'm just happy to be in the situation with my brothers and obviously it's a difficult one but being around this team, being around our staff, this group has always pushed me to be my best. This is my muse, this is my escape from the world – I enjoy being here and I'm just going to do my best to make sure I'm here present for the team and am intentional with the way I support the guys – I think that's the most important. I just pray they get the job done, obviously."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

With the loss against Panama, the USMNT cannot falter against Uruguay on matchday three. They will need to defeat their opposition, or earn a draw and rely on a result from Panama vs Bolivia to go in their favor, as well.

Without Weah available, here is how the USMNT can advance to the Copa America knockout stage.

Defeat Uruguay AND… Defeat Uruguay AND… Draw Uruguay AND…
Have a higher goal-differential than Panama, assuming they defeat Bolivia. Bolivia defeat OR draw Panama. Bolivia win OR draw vs Panama.

Brazil player ratings vs USMNT: Rodrygo shines but Dorival gets tactics wrong in Copa America warmup draw

Real Madrid's Rodrygo turned in an attacking clinic to cover up a tepid Selecao showing

Rodrygo showed just how effective he can be, but Brazil were otherwise unconvincing in a 1-1 draw with the USMNT in a Copa America warmup friendly.

The Real Madrid star bagged the Selecao's only goal, rather masking the loose performance around him – best encapsulated by the lack of incisive attacking edge when Endrick sat on the bench.

The USMNT had the best chance early on, Yunus Musah cranking a shot off the bar inside five minutes. Rodrygo opened the scoring, firing into the bottom corner after a defensive collapse from the hosts.

But the USMNT responded, with Christian Pulisic smashing a free-kick into the bottom corner. Brazil created more after the break. Rodrygo put an acrobatic bicycle kick wide. Endrick almost scored within seconds of entering the fray after surging through on goal. Pulisic could have made it 2-1, but fired right at the keeper from 10 yards out.

Rodrygo came close again soon after, beating his man before being denied by a fine reaction stop from Turner. And despite waves of pressure, the USMNT managed to keep Brazil at arm's length, the visitors settling for a slightly disappointing tie in their final Copa America warmup effort.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Alisson (7/10):

Made some impressive saves throughout. Wrong footed on the US goal, though.

    Danilo (5/10):

Given the runaround by Pulisic for the most part. He looked old.

    Marquinhos (6/10):

Gave up the free kick that led up to the hosts' equaliser. Solid against Ricardo Pepi otherwise.

    Lucas Beraldo (7/10):

Put in a few decent tackles and held his ground well. An impressive performance at the back.

    Wendell (7/10):

Kept Tim Weah quiet for long stretches, and wasn't afraid to get stuck in. Covered for Vinicius well, too.

    Midfield

    Bruno Guimaraes (5/10):

Not always his usual solid self at the base of midfield. Subbed after an hour.

    Lucas Paqueta (5/10):

Struggled to get involved, and didn't squeeze gaps in the middle defensively, either.

    Joao Gomes (4/10):

Picked up an early booking, didn't really get involved. Subbed at half time.

  • Getty

    Attack

    Raphinha (5/10):

Ran at Antonee Robinson, but tried to force it a bit too often. Ineffective, all said.

    Rodrygo (8/10):

Took his goal wonderfully – he's an underrated finisher. Almost followed it with a bicycle kick, and was narrowly denied by Matt Turner, too. A terrific performance.

    Vinicius Jr (6/10):

Moved into central areas often in the first few minutes, but sat on the touchline thereafter. Never quite got in the game and lacked his usual clinical edge.

  • Getty Images

    Subs & Manager

    Douglas Luiz (6/10):

Clean in central areas. Did enough to suggest he deserves to start.

    Endrick (7/10):

Almost scored within seconds of coming on. Had a few more good looks on goal. Should certainly start.

    Savio (6/10):

Tried to make things happen, but didn't have much space to do so.

    Andreas Pereira (6/10):

Not involved much, a few poor deliveries aside.

    Gabriel Martinelli (N/A):

No time to make an impact.

    Dorival Jr (6/10):

Went with a Vinicius-Rodrygo-Raphinha front three, leaving Endrick on the bench. It wasn't necessarily the best decision, as the Selecao were far better when the teenager came on. Has yet to convince at the helm.

Marcus Stoinis picks up side injury, could be a doubt for second ODI

Australia have Cameron Green and Moises Henriques as back-up options in their squad

Andrew McGlashan27-Nov-2020Cameron Green could be a step closer to his international debut after Marcus Stoinis pulled up with a side injury during Australia’s opening ODI against India at the SCG on Friday.Stoinis left the field two balls into his seventh over and had a scan in the evening with a Cricket Australia spokesman saying it showed a “low grade side strain” which will be “managed accordingly.” The quick turnaround between matches – the second game is on Sunday – would seem to make it unlikely he will be available for it.Stoinis, who made a first-ball duck in Australia’s huge total of 374, has a history with side injuries having also suffered one at the 2019 World Cup.Green, the Western Australia allrounder, who has also been named in the Test squad, was picked largely on the back of his first-class record, with his List A numbers being more modest.”Fingers crossed [Stoinis] is okay, if he’s not someone has to come in and probably someone who has to bowl overs so perhaps Cameron,” Steven Smith said. “He’s started really well in the Shield season, he’s a bright talent.”I faced him for a couple of balls in the nets this afternoon before the game, it’s the first time I’ve seen him bowl and he bowls a heavy ball. He looks an impressive talent and if he gets the opportunity hopefully he can take it with both hands.”Ahead of the series, Australia coach Justin Langer had said Green would play in the ODI side only if he was able to be a full part of the bowling attack. And though Green returned to action with the ball for the first time in a year during the last two rounds of the Sheffield Shield, his role was limited to four-over spells.Another option Australia have in their squad is Moises Henriques, who was recalled for the first time since 2017, and is also a like-for-like replacement for Stoinis. Other names would be Sean Abbott as a pace-bowling allrounder or Ashton Agar which would provide another frontline spinner.
