No Son or Dele: Building Spurs’ perfect 21st Century footballer

da bet7k: Tottenham Hotspur have enjoyed plenty of top talents over the years, but it's not been enough to glean silverware for quite some time, with the wait for a major honour stretching 16 interminable years.

da lvbet: Since triumphing against Chelsea in the 2008 League Cup final, Tottenham have gone through eight permanent managers, qualified for six Champions League campaigns and reached four cup competition finals, but alas…

Still, Spurs have had some scintillating players on the books and are at the beginning of what looks like an exciting resurgence under Ange Postecoglou, who has picked the club up after a dreadful 2022/23 campaign and charted a course for success in the Premier League, battling for top four.

Ange Postecoglou

Postecoglou boasts a team of myriad qualities, but we wondered what the perfect Tottenham player might actually look like, harnessing the finest attributes of the finest players of the 21st Century.

Interestingly, this superhuman Spurs sensation would not actually call upon skills from phenoms such as Dele Alli or current club captain Heung-min Son.

Here they are…

1 Brain: Mousa Dembele

Former Tottenham midfielder Mousa Dembele.

Spurs have had some brainy boys in their ranks over the years, and there are a couple lower down this list that would be in with a shout for the most erudite Lilywhites over the years, but Mousa Dembele might just be the cream of the crop in this regard.

Described as a "genius" by Mauricio Pochettino, Dembele read the game like a scholar perusing a library, with his distribution, marking, pressing, counter-pressing, vision, command, understanding, spatial awareness… need I go on? Maybe not, the picture's clear.

The former Belgium international might not have been the most goal-efficient midfielder in the Premier League but he was the engine to charge a Tottenham team under Pochettino's wing that boasted flair, firepower and steel, but none wove the threads of the team together and held it in unity like Dembele. The very embodiment of the all-encompassing, all-seeing midfield machine.

2 Head: Michael Dawson

Former Tottenham captain Michael Dawson

Something of a stalwart, Michael Dawson was an absolute rock for Tottenham throughout the 2010/11 season, handed opportunities following injuries to players such as Jonathan Woodgate and Ledley King, amassing 324 fixtures before joining Hull City in 2014.

Since WhoScored started recording statistics in 2009/10, Dawson won an average of 3.5 aerial duels per game throughout the duration of his professional career – for reference, Cristian Romero averages 2.5 per fixture throughout his career.

3 Pace: Kyle Walker

Kyle Walker playing for Tottenham

Last season, Kyle Walker clocked up the fastest speed in the Premier League at 37.31km/h, despite spending the lion's share of the campaign as a 32-year-old.

The Manchester City right-back departed Spurs back in 2017, joining Pep Guardiola's side in a world-record (for a defender) £53m deal.

He might have left the London club way back when but he chalked up 229 appearances for the Lilywhites and has some of the most blistering pace the Premier League has seen.

4 Vision: Luka Modric

Luka Modric for Tottenham.

Luka Modric could probably stake a claim for a number of facets to sculpt the finest footballer in the land, such is the complete brilliance of his skill set.

The 2018 Ballon d'Or winner is one of the finest midfielders of his generation and while he's now 38 years old, remains an important member of a hungry Real Madrid team.

He joined Los Blancos from Tottenham for £30m way back in 2012, but not before cementing himself as one of the finest passers in the Premier League, with his technical quality leading iconic Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson to claim that he "could play in any team."

5 Strength: Sandro

Sandro for Tottenham

When Tottenham plucked Sandro away from his Brazilian homeland back in 2010, manager Harry Redknapp described him as a "strong and aggressive" player, and while he didn't live up to the hype – largely due to an unfortunate anterior cruciate ligament rupture when he was 23 – this was certainly an apt remark.

Lean, mean and a scythe-kicking martial artist, Sandro was a tough nut and you wouldn't mess with him when he was in his groove.

6 Right foot: Harry Kane

Harry Kane scores for Tottenham.

Obviously, it's Harry Kane for this one. The Three Lions captain is one of the best centre-forwards that England has ever seen, and he left Tottenham as the club's record scorer with 280 strikes from 435 appearances.

After a career of service down at N17, the 30-year-old completed an initial £82m transfer to the German giants following Spurs' dismal 2022/23 campaign, where he scored 30 Premier League goals.

He's a brilliant goalscorer, but he's an even better footballer.

7 Left foot: Gareth Bale

Gareth Bale celebrates for Tottenham.

The perfect player to complete the perfect Tottenham footballer. Gareth Bale started his Lilywhites journey as a left-back after signing from Southampton as an 18-year-old in 2007, joining for a £7m fee, but he would go on to cement a legacy as one of the game's greatest ballers of modern times.

Deserved? Absolutely. And while Bale's got pace for days and underrated power to rival most strongmen in the Premier League, it's his left foot that has fired him into an iconic position, scoring from right wing during 2012/13 and thus earning a world record £85m transfer to Real Madrid.

Gary Neville said that that goal against Liverpool in the Champions League final "may be the best goal I've ever seen", and it really was that good.

Despite enjoying the entirety of his silver-laden success after leaving Tottenham, the now-retired Welshman is one of the greatest to pull on that white shirt.

Tamim Iqbal hits record-breaking 158 as Bangladesh win a thriller

Zimbabwe fought back bravely, with Tiripano scoring a fifty, but in the end it wasn’t enough

The Report by Liam Brickhill03-Mar-2020

Tamim Iqbal walks off after breaking his own record for highest ODI score for a Bangladesh batsman•BCB

Bangladesh survived a thrilling late rally from Zimbabwe’s lower order to secure a four-run win in an epic finish in Sylhet. After Tamim Iqbal’s record-breaking 158 had boosted Bangladesh to 322 for 8, Zimbabwe appeared out of the hunt when they slipped to 225 for 7 in the 42nd over. But Donald Tiripano and Tinotenda Mutombodzi launched a rousing counter-attack with an eighth wicket stand that brought 80 runs in just 7.3 overs. Tiripano struck five enormous sixes, including two in the final over, but he needed to hit another one off the final ball to secure the fairytale finish. It was not to be, Al-Amin Hossain holding his nerve at the last to seal the series for Bangladesh.Mutombodzi and Tiripano’s partnership was a new record for the eighth wicket in ODIs in Bangladesh, and was all the more remarkable given the situation in which it arose. When Sikandar Raza sliced Mashrafe Mortaza to third man to fall for 66, Zimbabwe’s last frontline batsman was back in the dugout and the required rate was well over 12 an over. Tiripano’s career strike-rate in ODIs before this knock was a shade over 56, and he is more known for his stodge than his flair. Mutombodzi’s career strike-rate was barely any better. It seemed that the match would fizzle out when the asking rate peaked above 15 with five overs to go, but Zimbabwe would not go quietly into the night this time and Tiripano sparked an incredible fightback. With Mutombodzi trailing in his wake, 16 runs flowed from the 46th over and 20 from the 47th, the fifty stand being raised in just 4.4 overs.Suddenly, Bangladesh were the team under pressure, but Shafiul Islam and Hossain then found their range with the yorker to set up a grandstand finish: 20 runs required from the last six balls. After a single and a wide, Zimbabwe once again appeared buried when Mutombodzi holed out to long-on. But Tiripano surged once more with back-to-back sixes, the second of which took him to a maiden ODI fifty. With Zimbabwe hunting six from the last two balls, Hossain was very fortunate to get away with a bouncer that cleared Tiripano’s head by some distance, leaving Zimbabwe needing a miracle from the last ball. In a breathless finish, Hossain held his nerve as Tiripano could only manage a toe-ended single down to long-off.Things could have been very different had Zimbabwe’s top order held things together, and that was the difference between the two sides: Zimbabwe scored 49 in the Powerplay, losing two wickets, but Bangladesh cruised to 65 in the same period and Tamim Iqbal batted all the way through to the 46th over to set up their innings.Iqbal spanked 20 fours and three sixes in his knock, which marked a career-best effort for him, and also a record high individual score for Bangladesh in this format. His approach this afternoon stood in contrast to the first ODI. On Sunday, he took his time to settle and struck just one boundary in the first ten. Today, he burst out of the blocks in vintage style, putting Zimbabwe’s seam attack to the sword with 10 rasping fours on either side of the wicket inside the Powerplay. His aggression meant that the early run-outs of Liton Das and Najmul Hossain Shanto barely put a dent in Bangladesh. Indeed, Iqbal’s calling was perhaps his only flaw, and there was more than one moment of indecision in his third wicket stand with Mushfiqur Rahim. But Zimbabwe were not able to capitalise on them and the partnership had reached 87 before Rahim holed out to long-on.Iqbal shifted through the gears throughout his knock: his first fifty came in just 42 deliveries, his second took 64 as Zimbabwe’s spinners wrested back a modicum of control in the middle of the innings, but then he went on the charge once again to motor from 100 to 150 in just 27 balls. Along the way, he became the first Bangladesh batsman to go past 7,000 runs in ODIs and with his third six he broke his own record for the highest score by a Bangladesh batsman in ODIs.To their credit Zimbabwe’s seamers struck a couple of blows of their own to ensure that Bangladesh couldn’t run completely rampant at the death, but on current form it seemed 322 was already well out of their reach. And when they wobbled early on, it seemed this match would follow the same script as the first ODI.Tinashe Kamunhukamwe managed to keep Zimbabwe in touching distance with his first ODI fifty, and an 81-run stand between Raza and Wesley Madhevere revived hopes once more. Both batsmen reached fifties of their own – Madhevere’s being his very first in internationals, coming in his second game – but when they fell in quick succession Zimbabwe once again appeared sunk.Tiripano and Mutombodzi had other ideas. While a fairytale finish was denied to them at the last, Zimbabwe can at least hold their heads high while Bangladesh will go into their third game with the comfort of an unassailable series lead.

Paqueta misses out in 4 changes in predicted West Ham lineup vs Villa

da apostaganha: West Ham United's 5-0 win over Freiburg on Thursday was as good as any that Hammers fans have seen this season, but Sunday's Premier League clash against Aston Villa will be a wholly different contest.

da jogodeouro: Unai Emery's high-flying side have been breathtaking this season but suffered a 4-0 home defeat against Tottenham Hotspur one week ago, with John McGinn sent off.

While it feels like West Ham's campaign has been marked by inconsistency, David Moyes' team are into the Europa League quarter-finals and are currently seventh in the table, having finished 14th last term and sold Declan Rice to Arsenal for £105m in the summer.

After dispatching Freiburg, Sunday's hosts will be fuelled with fire and belief that they can impose another defeat on the Villans, with Moyes likely to make at least four changes following Thursday's emphatic victory.

1 GK – Alphonse Areola

West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.

Alphonse Areola has taken the starring spot between the sticks this season and has done so emphatically, with his command and shot-stopping prowess crucial for Moyes' side.

The fitness of Ollie Watkins, who was forced off against Ajax in midweek, is a big question heading into the fixture but Areola will be confident of stopping the visitors' offensive threat.

2 RB – Vladimir Coufal

West Ham defender Vladimir Coufal.

Having signed for West Ham for just £5m back in 2020, Vladimir Coufal has been incredibly important and has been one of the club's most underrated outlets this term.

As per Sofascore, the 31-year-old has supplied six assists in the Premier League this season, averaging two tackles, 2.7 clearances and 4.5 ball recoveries per game while succeeding with 53% of his ground duels.

3 CB – Kurt Zouma

Kurt Zouma for West Ham

Kurt Zouma was appointed West Ham captain at the start of the 2023/24 campaign but he hasn't played his best football this year, albeit scoring on his last Premier League appearance against Everton.

The Frenchman, aged 29, is an imposing presence in the backline and will need to harness his command and control if he is to emerge victorious against a fluid and dangerous Lions attack.

4 CB – Nayef Aguerd

Nayef Aguerd for West Ham.

West Ham's backline have already conceded 49 league goals this season and Nayef Aguerd is among those who need to perform well against Villa if he is to return to prominence in east London.

He missed out against Freiburg but could return to replace Konstantinos Mavropanos – the latter man notably netting an own goal against Burnley last weekend.

5 LB – Emerson Palmieri

Emerson West Ham

Emerson Palmieri was injured in the first leg against Freiburg and has missed West Ham's past two matches, but he is making good progress and could return to the line-up.

The Italy international – hailed for his "unbelievable" all-encompassing showings by Flynn Downes – has emerged as a key cog in the London Stadium side's system this season and no defender has made more tackles than his 78 in the Premier League.

6 CM – Edson Alvarez

Edson Alvarez.

Edson Alvarez had some big boots to fill in the West Ham engine room when signing from Ajax for £35m last August, and while he's not his predecessor, The Athletic's Roshane Thomas has remarked that he has been West Ham's "best summer signing."

As per FBref, the Mexico international ranks among the top 14% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for tackles, the top 20% for interceptions, the top 5% for blocks and the top 1% for clearances per 90.

Tough-tackling and tenacious, he will be key.

7 CM – Tomas Soucek

West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek

Tomas Soucek should retain his starting spot tomorrow, with Kalvin Phillips hardly proving himself a reliable starter in a Hammers shirt.

The centre-midfielder has been an important player throughout the Moyes era and has scored nine goals from 40 outings this season.

8 RW – Jarrod Bowen

Jarrod Bowen for West Ham

Naturally, Jarrod Bowen was on the scoresheet in midweek and now boasts a return of 18 goals and seven assists from 36 appearances in all competitions this season.

He's rather good, isn't he? And, moreover, he's back in his favoured role on the right wing.

9 AM – James Ward-Prowse

West Ham player James Ward-Prowse.

James Ward-Prowse was harangued for his effort against Burnley last weekend and he was hooked at half-time after taking just 23 touches and failing to contribute with a single defensive contribution besides winning an aerial duel.

Still, he was a wand of a delivery and his creativity could be key tomorrow, especially given that Lucas Paqueta is a doubt after picking up a knock against Freiburg.

10 LW – Mohammed Kudus

West Ham forward Mohammed Kudus.

Mohammed Kudus is a crowd-pleaser. After the Ghanaian showman's stunning first goal against Freiburg, collecting in his defensive half and beating his man, then another, then another, to finally slot past Noah Atubolu, one half-expected to see a bouquet chucked at his feet, or hear calls for an encore, as he perched on a stool and basked in the glory of a high-class goal.

In other words, he's darn good, and if West Ham are to produce a good display against Villa he will need to be on his a-game.

Why the FA Cup semis are played at Wembley as Palace and Forest book trips

da esoccer bet: With the FA Cup quarter-finals taking place this weekend, four clubs will book their places at Wembley for the semi-finals.

da 888casino: Wembley has hosted the last four every year since 2008, with stadiums like Old Trafford and Villa Park standing in during the famous ground’s rebuild at the turn of the century.

But why is Wembley Stadium not saved for the competition’s finale?

The answer is a rather boring one: money. In fact, it was decided back in 2003 – during the new stadium’s construction – that semi-finals would be staged under the famous arch to help pay for the new ground.

Wembley first hosted the semi-finals in the early 1990s, including derbies between Arsenal & Tottenham Hotspur and Sheffield United & Sheffield Wednesday.

The last season before Wembley was knocked down (1999/00) also saw two semi-finals in the capital, with Aston Villa and Chelsea prevailing before the Blues repeated the trick in the final.

Now something of an annual tradition, Wembley hosts a pair of semi-finals across one weekend each season, though it is not without its opposition.

Firstly, football purists will argue that Wembley should be saved for the showpiece event of the final, while there are occasionally geographical factors to consider, particularly when two northern sides are paired together.

This year’s draw meant that there would only be one London representative in the last four, with Crystal Palace taking that berth after seeing off Fulham in the only all-London quarter-final tie.

It seems unlikely things will change any time soon, given the semi-finals have been staged at Wembley for 18 seasons and counting, especially with the ground filling up with passionate supporters no matter who’s involved.

Rickelton's marathon 259, Verreynne century thump hapless Pakistan

SA’s quicks Rabada and Jansen then tore through a line-up already missing the injured Ayub

Pakistan’s horror day in Cape Town was complete after South Africa ripped through their top order to leave them staring down the barrel of a huge defeat. Having posted 615 thanks to a double-hundred from Ryan Rickelton and a century from Kyle Verreynne, South Africa’s quicks Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen tore through a Pakistan line-up already missing the injured Saim Ayub. So effectively, South Africa are six wickets away from making Pakistan bat again, with the visitors a mammoth 551 runs behind after day two.Having taken command before lunch, South Africa ground Pakistan into the dust in the afternoon. Rickelton ended up with 259, falling just short of Stephen Fleming’s 262 as the highest score at Newlands. Verreynne brought up his fourth Test hundred. Jansen, out of form with the bat all year in 2024, heralded the new year with a whirlwind half-century. Six fours and three sixes helped him get there in 42 balls. Thus, as many as 137 runs were added in the second session, with South Africa having surged to 566 for 7 by tea, already their highest score at home in four years.Pakistan gamely battled on, but their efforts never looked like bearing fruit on a wicket that had long since flattened, and batters that had long since settled. Much of the second session became a milestone-marking exercise. Verreynne continued with the belligerence that had lit up the first session, a boundary off Mohammad Abbas and a single off the next ball bringing up three figures. It brought Newlands to its feet once more; they may have sore legs from the frequency with which they had to do that.Salman Ali Agha struck next over to prise him out as Verreynne went for a slog sweep, but it did little to stymie South Africa’s momentum. With no scoreboard pressure, Jansen let his natural talent speak for itself, swinging freely and timing it beautifully. He took 11 balls to get off the mark, but once he did, there was no stopping him. Two fours and a six off Khurram Shahzad in two successive overs helped bring up the 50 partnership in 46 balls, while each of Rickelton and Jansen helped themselves to sixes off Salman.Kyle Verreynne got to his fourth Test hundred•AFP/Getty Images

Pakistan finally saw the back of Rickelton before tea was called. Having slapped Mir Hamza over his head for four, he top-edged the next ball to Abbas at long-on, who hung on to send him on his way, but not before he had nearly doubled his Test tally in one innings. In the morning, Rickelton had become the first South African in eight years to score a Test double hundred as South Africa tightened their grip on the Test. Pakistan began the session with some promise, taking the new ball immediately and striking within four overs, when Abbas tempted David Bedingham into a push outside off stump and induced an outside edge. It gave Pakistan a lift, but Rickelton merely carried on with the discipline that saw him go in overnight unbeaten on 176. He was cautious against the length deliveries and dismissive of everything else.Verreynne, meanwhile, was less discerning in his shot selection, a hook over deep backward square off Abbas revealing his intentions. It was a shot that defined the session for him; he picked up another two sixes off Jamal in the final over before lunch the same way. When Shan Masood put in three fielders close in at cover, he still found a way to pierce them through that region against Hamza, whose attempts to induce cover drives were successful, but just not in the way he had hoped. At the other end, Rickelton got to his double hundred with a punch through the off side, haring off halfway down the field in celebration. But the highlights all belonged to Verreynne, who greeted Salman with a reverse sweep for four off the second ball, and another one to finish the over off. Before the session was out, Verreynne had taken Jamal down by plundering 17 runs in an over.Kagiso Rabada got two early wickets with the new ball•Gallo Images

Pakistan finally did manage to bring the innings to a close after more than 140 overs under the hot Newlands sun, finishing, with pleasing symmetry, the way they started it. Abbas hit the top of off to knock back debutant Kwena Maphaka’s stumps, just like ball-tracking projected Abbas would have done off the innings’ first ball had Aiden Markram’s pad didn’t get in the way.But as soon as they started with the bat, they might almost have been left wishing South Africa’s innings didn’t end. Masood didn’t see out the first over, pushing at a Rabada delivery that nibbled away and took his outside edge along with it. Saud Shakeel fell in almost identical fashion as he uncharacteristically drove at Rabada, the same edge carrying to the same slip fielder, with David Bedingham making no mistake. In between, extra pace and bounce from Jansen forced Kamran Ghulam into an awkward position that culminated in his stumps being scattered behind him.So threatening was South Africa’s opening salvo and so listless were Pakistan’s batters that it felt the hosts might burrow deep into the tail this evening. But Babar Azam, opening in the absence of Ayub, dug in alongside Mohammad Rizwan, and South Africa’s replacement bowlers were not quite at Rabada and Jansen’s devastating level. It helped Pakistan that made sure they ended a day that had no redeeming features with the hope the next one may delay the inevitable a while longer.
