No Son or Dele: Building Spurs’ perfect 21st Century footballer

da bet7k: Tottenham Hotspur have enjoyed plenty of top talents over the years, but it's not been enough to glean silverware for quite some time, with the wait for a major honour stretching 16 interminable years.

da lvbet: Since triumphing against Chelsea in the 2008 League Cup final, Tottenham have gone through eight permanent managers, qualified for six Champions League campaigns and reached four cup competition finals, but alas…

Still, Spurs have had some scintillating players on the books and are at the beginning of what looks like an exciting resurgence under Ange Postecoglou, who has picked the club up after a dreadful 2022/23 campaign and charted a course for success in the Premier League, battling for top four.

    Ange Postecoglou

Postecoglou boasts a team of myriad qualities, but we wondered what the perfect Tottenham player might actually look like, harnessing the finest attributes of the finest players of the 21st Century.

Interestingly, this superhuman Spurs sensation would not actually call upon skills from phenoms such as Dele Alli or current club captain Heung-min Son.

    Here they are…

    1 Brain: Mousa Dembele

    Former Tottenham midfielder Mousa Dembele.

Spurs have had some brainy boys in their ranks over the years, and there are a couple lower down this list that would be in with a shout for the most erudite Lilywhites over the years, but Mousa Dembele might just be the cream of the crop in this regard.

Described as a "genius" by Mauricio Pochettino, Dembele read the game like a scholar perusing a library, with his distribution, marking, pressing, counter-pressing, vision, command, understanding, spatial awareness… need I go on? Maybe not, the picture's clear.

The former Belgium international might not have been the most goal-efficient midfielder in the Premier League but he was the engine to charge a Tottenham team under Pochettino's wing that boasted flair, firepower and steel, but none wove the threads of the team together and held it in unity like Dembele. The very embodiment of the all-encompassing, all-seeing midfield machine.

    2 Head: Michael Dawson

    Former Tottenham captain Michael Dawson

Something of a stalwart, Michael Dawson was an absolute rock for Tottenham throughout the 2010/11 season, handed opportunities following injuries to players such as Jonathan Woodgate and Ledley King, amassing 324 fixtures before joining Hull City in 2014.

Since WhoScored started recording statistics in 2009/10, Dawson won an average of 3.5 aerial duels per game throughout the duration of his professional career – for reference, Cristian Romero averages 2.5 per fixture throughout his career.

    3 Pace: Kyle Walker

    Kyle Walker playing for Tottenham

Last season, Kyle Walker clocked up the fastest speed in the Premier League at 37.31km/h, despite spending the lion's share of the campaign as a 32-year-old.

The Manchester City right-back departed Spurs back in 2017, joining Pep Guardiola's side in a world-record (for a defender) £53m deal.

He might have left the London club way back when but he chalked up 229 appearances for the Lilywhites and has some of the most blistering pace the Premier League has seen.

    4 Vision: Luka Modric

    Luka Modric for Tottenham.

Luka Modric could probably stake a claim for a number of facets to sculpt the finest footballer in the land, such is the complete brilliance of his skill set.

The 2018 Ballon d'Or winner is one of the finest midfielders of his generation and while he's now 38 years old, remains an important member of a hungry Real Madrid team.

He joined Los Blancos from Tottenham for £30m way back in 2012, but not before cementing himself as one of the finest passers in the Premier League, with his technical quality leading iconic Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson to claim that he "could play in any team."

    5 Strength: Sandro

    Sandro for Tottenham

When Tottenham plucked Sandro away from his Brazilian homeland back in 2010, manager Harry Redknapp described him as a "strong and aggressive" player, and while he didn't live up to the hype – largely due to an unfortunate anterior cruciate ligament rupture when he was 23 – this was certainly an apt remark.

Lean, mean and a scythe-kicking martial artist, Sandro was a tough nut and you wouldn't mess with him when he was in his groove.

    6 Right foot: Harry Kane

    Harry Kane scores for Tottenham.

Obviously, it's Harry Kane for this one. The Three Lions captain is one of the best centre-forwards that England has ever seen, and he left Tottenham as the club's record scorer with 280 strikes from 435 appearances.

After a career of service down at N17, the 30-year-old completed an initial £82m transfer to the German giants following Spurs' dismal 2022/23 campaign, where he scored 30 Premier League goals.

He's a brilliant goalscorer, but he's an even better footballer.

    7 Left foot: Gareth Bale

    Gareth Bale celebrates for Tottenham.

The perfect player to complete the perfect Tottenham footballer. Gareth Bale started his Lilywhites journey as a left-back after signing from Southampton as an 18-year-old in 2007, joining for a £7m fee, but he would go on to cement a legacy as one of the game's greatest ballers of modern times.

Deserved? Absolutely. And while Bale's got pace for days and underrated power to rival most strongmen in the Premier League, it's his left foot that has fired him into an iconic position, scoring from right wing during 2012/13 and thus earning a world record £85m transfer to Real Madrid.

Gary Neville said that that goal against Liverpool in the Champions League final "may be the best goal I've ever seen", and it really was that good.

Despite enjoying the entirety of his silver-laden success after leaving Tottenham, the now-retired Welshman is one of the greatest to pull on that white shirt.

    Coronavirus outbreak: County cricket latest

We keep track of how counties are dealing with delays to the start of the English season

DerbyshirePlayers and the majority of non-playing staff have been furloughed. “We have a highly-valued network of staff across the club and this programme will allow us to protect jobs and plan for long-term sustainability,” said chief executive Ryan Duckett.”We will continue to proactively prepare for a return to cricket once it is safe to do so and I would like to thank all players, staff, supporters and stakeholders for their ongoing support and understanding.”Australia pair Sean Abbott and Ben McDermott will not now be contracted for 2020, with their signings deferred by a year.Head coach Dave Houghton is currently with his family in Zimbabwe.DurhamPlayers and staff have been placed on furlough, though the club will top up salaries to ensure everyone receives full pay.CEO Tim Bostock thinks that bigger counties are more likely to suffer significantly as a result of the crisis due to the fact a lower percentage of their income comes from the ECB, with events, conferences and hotels all contributing significantly in a typical year.”They’ve got businesses that rely on income outside of ECB regular monthly funding – particularly I can think of Lancashire, Warwickshire and Yorkshire, the Ageas Bowl,” Bostock told talkSPORT. “They’ve done the right thing, they’ve diversified so that they can survive without ECB income, but what that has meant is… that has fallen off the edge of a cliff through no fault of their own. That is a major challenge.”A club like Durham – a larger percentage of our income comes from the guaranteed ECB income as a result of the new television deal, and therefore we are much less exposed. I can confidently say that what’s coming in is more than what’s going out.”Bostock told the it was unlikely that Cameron Bancroft would join the club this year, but said that he would be given “first option” as their overseas player in 2021.EssexThe club’s playing staff and the majority of non-playing staff have been placed on furlough leave “until further notice”. Chief executive Derek Bowden said: “By utilising the coronavirus job retention scheme, we are able to preserve and protect jobs at The Cloudfm County Ground during a financially damaging period.”The signing of Australia seamer Peter Siddle, who was due back at Chelmsford for a third season running, has also been deferred until 2021.Alastair Cook has said that he would prefer there not to be a County Championship this season if the alternative is a less “meaningful” reduced campaign. Bowden has suggested a series of regional first-class competitions could be played instead.Players have been proactive in supporting the NHS, preparing thousands of hot meals for staff across hospitals in Essex and London, and releasing a charity music video.A sign on the gates at Sophia Gardens•Getty Images

GlamorganPlayers, coaches, and the majority of staff have been placed on furlough leave at least until the end of May, and senior staff have taken a 25% pay cut.Chief executive Hugh Morris said: “This is not a decision that the club have taken lightly, but it’s a necessary one to help preserve the jobs of all the staff at Glamorgan. We are incredibly grateful to all members of staff for recognising the challenges to the finances of the club and willingly engaging in the measures taken to help protect the future of Glamorgan.”Marnus Labuschagne said he was “very disappointed that I can’t be over there playing for Glamorgan”, but his deal is yet to be officially cancelled.GloucestershireCheteshwar Pujara’s stint at the club is off following the delay to the start of the season, while Qais Ahmad and AJ Tye’s deals have also been cancelled. The club confirmed in a statement that it had “significantly reduced the number of staff and players actively working” and that “sizeable savings” for April and May had been made.”Our financial projections show that, even on the worst case scenario of no cricket at all this season, the club should be able to break even this year and be ready to face the future in a strong financial position when this crisis has passed,” the statement said.HampshireThe signing of Australia spinner Nathan Lyon for the majority of the Championship campaign has been shelved, although Hampshire hope to still have Shaheen Afridi for the Vitality Blast.”There’s a lot of unknowns around Pakistan touring and he’s obviously an integral part of their setup,” director of cricket, Giles White, said. “So, we’ll just have to see what the tournament looks like and the positioning in the calendar before we can see whether it’s possible to have him with us.”KentPlaying staff have been placed on furlough leave, effective from April 9, with the situation to be reviewed regularly from the start of May. Non-playing staff were furloughed on April 6. Players’ salaries will not be topped up by the club. Captain Sam Billings remains non-furloughed to support the club’s efforts in the community, but has taken a temporary 20% pay cut in line with the rest of the squad.Director of cricket Paul Downton said: “This outcome has not been reached lightly and I want to thank all of our players who are standing shoulder to shoulder with their colleagues during the pandemic. We will continue to monitor this situation closely.”Executive directors have voluntarily agreed to a short-term pay cut of 20% and are in talks with local council to discuss terms of a loan repayment, among other measures.”We feel these are exceptional circumstances,” chief executive Simon Storey told ESPNcricinfo. “We will find a way through this for Kent.”New Zealand seamer Matt Henry’s contract with the club has been terminated.LancashireThe club confirmed on April 7 that it does not intend to furlough playing staff. “None of [the club’s training regime] would be available to the players if they were to be furloughed, and it is our intention not to do so, whilst keeping the situation under review,” said Paul Allott, the director of cricket.”Ultimately, we have to ensure they are as ready as they can be for a cricket season to commence and we will continue to work towards that objective over the coming weeks and months. All of the measures that the club is adopting and implementing are fully endorsed and appreciated by the PCA.”However, deals for overseas players BJ Watling, Glenn Maxwell and James Faulkner have been cancelled for 2020.Chief executive Daniel Gidney has issued a statement to members, signalling his intention to keep hold of staff where possible.”We’re carrying that large staff payroll – when the turnover drops off like that and the phone just stops ringing, that has a catastrophic short-term effect on any organisation,” Gidney said. “We have some difficult measures to make, we have some cost-cutting to do, but we’re doing everything we can to protect our biggest asset which is our staff.”Chairman David Hodgkiss has died aged 71 after contracting the virus. A club statement said: “He was much loved by everyone at Lancashire Cricket Club and respected throughout the cricketing world. Our sincere condolences and thoughts and prayers are with his family.”The club will offer 5000 tickets for a T20 Blast game to NHS staff as “a gesture of support for their ongoing heroic efforts”.County groundsmen will have plenty of time to prepare their pitches for the summer•Getty Images

LeicestershireThe majority of the club’s staff, including players and coaches, have been placed on furlough leave for an initial three-week period until the end of April. “This has not been an easy decision to make, but I would like to thank all of our staff who have worked incredibly hard and acted professionally to perform their roles during a period of such uncertainty,” said chair Mehmooda Duke.MiddlesexAll of the club’s players, and the majority of coaches, admin and support staff, have been furloughed until further notice. Those with salaries above £27,500 have also agreed to take a 17% pay cut, initially until the end of May. Senior management have agreed 20% pay cuts.”We are operating in unprecedented times,” chief executive, Richard Goatley, said. “We have to make difficult decisions that not only protect the future of Middlesex Cricket but the jobs of our employees.”For all staff to agree voluntarily to a significant salary reduction for the next two months is testament to how invested they are in Middlesex Cricket and committed to helping the Club through this crisis. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone across the Club for their understanding in these difficult times.”Peter Handscomb, who was due to captain the side, admitted his contract is “on hold”. Head coach Stuart Law is in the UK.NorthamptonshireNorthants’ professional playing and support staff have been furloughed with players agreeing to take a pay cut consistent with other non-playing staff at the club. The agreement will initially run through April and May, with the situation being monitored during that time.Chief Executive Ray Payne said: “We see this as a positive move that will help ensure longevity across the club in these unprecedented times. One thing that has always been at the forefront of our minds has been a ‘one club’ approach and thankfully everyone at the club has shared the vision of being in this together.”It is going to hit us hard but we can survive this. Had this been five years ago we wouldn’t have got through it. But since then we’ve managed our debt, we’ve got a good business model for a small club and I think in terms of the ECB looking at all the counties, we’re probably one of the few they’re not too worried about.”Alex Wakely’s benefit year was pushed back to 2021. “We’d put a lot of work into it and most of my events were ready to go and we were in a really good place,” he told the . “But ultimately regardless of anything, I wouldn’t have felt comfortable doing it.”NottinghamshireDane Paterson’s attempts to join the club as a Kolpak player have been put on hold by the pandemic. The club has been active in supporting the local community, including helping provide hot meals to homeless, sheltered and vulnerable individuals and providing memorabilia donations to raise money for a Nottingham charitable fundraiser.Somerset67 of the club’s 76 employees have been furloughed.Chief executive Gordon Hollins said: “By taking advantage of the government’s coronavirus job retention scheme, we are able to preserve jobs at the Cooper Associates County Ground during such a difficult financial period for the club. It also ensures that we will be in a strong position to face the opportunities and challenges that will lie ahead once we have overcome this pandemic.”Vernon Philander’s two-year Kolpak contract has been cancelled.A sign at Taunton warns fans to stay away•Getty Images

Work is continuing on the redevelopment project at The Oval.Head coach Michael di Venuto and seamer Morne Morkel are currently in Australia, Hashim Amla and Dan Moriarty are in South Africa, and Nico Reifer is in Barbados. “if and when we get the thumbs up to start playing cricket, we’ll get them back over here,” Alec Stewart, director of cricket, told a members’ forum.SussexThe club has furloughed the majority of its non-playing staff, plus all players and coaches. Chief executive Rob Andrew said: “The board of Sussex Cricket, with the support of the executive leadership team, are making decisions in the best interests of everyone’s health and in order to protect everyone’s jobs when we do return to normality.”Head coach Jason Gillespie is currently in Australia with his family. David Wiese and Stiaan van Zyl are in South Africa.WarwickshirePlaying and non-playing staff have been furloughed, with the club guaranteeing 100% of players’ salaries. Edgbaston will become a coronavirus testing centre for NHS staff.”We’re all in the firing line,” Paul Farbrace, sport director, told ESPNcricinfo. “I genuinely worry about the state of the game, and whether we can build on what was a fantastic year for English cricket.”Stuart Cain is set to be appointed as the club’s new CEO.WorcestershirePlaying and non-playing staff furloughed with the club offering players a guaranteed 90% of their wages.A club statement on April 6 said that provisional work had indicated the crisis could have a cost of over £1.1m, “which for a club that in 2019 made a statutory loss of £89.3k and has £4.3 million of debt is substantial”.Chairman Fanos Hira told BBC Hereford and Worcester that the club’s “lean structure” will be helpful during the crisis. “We’re the only county that doesn’t have a six-figure paid CEO,” he said. “We don’t have a director of cricket either, probably on similar pay, so we are a lean structure.”In the past where it has probably been disadvantageous to counties with non-Test match grounds, now we’re not reliant on the vast amounts of hospitality income or big functions that occur in these vast venues. So, in many respects, although the impact on us is great, for many other counties with higher fixed costs that impact could be a lot greater. Perhaps it’s an advantage to us during this period of enormous uncertainty.”Players and staff ran nearly 1,000 kilometres in a week between them as part of the ‘Rapids Relay’ to raise over £14,000 for the Acorns Children’s Hospice Trust.YorkshirePlaying and coaching staff have been placed on furlough leave, and have been asked to take wage cuts of up to 20% from June 1.”What you have to remember is that we have got absolutely no income coming in whatsoever aside from a little bit through the online shop. But monies are still going out,” said chief executive Mark Arthur.”We’ve reduced our overheads as best we can, with the final part of that being these salary deductions. Combined with the furlough scheme, it does mean we are not haemorrhaging day-to-day cash.”R Ashwin, Keshav Maharaj and Nicholas Pooran’s contracts have been cancelled.

Rodgers must boldly drop 5/10 Celtic star to win the title

da esport bet: Celtic took another step in the right direction to another Scottish Premiership title as they travelled away to Dundee to secure a 2-1 win on Sunday.

da bet sport: The Hoops needed to record a positive result after their rivals had won earlier in the day, and they stepped up to claim all three points on their travels.

Brendan Rodgers opted to bring James Forrest, who FFC urged the manager to start, into the starting XI on the flank over Hyun-jun Yang and Luis Palma, and it was a bold call that paid off for the box.

The Scottish forward scored both of Celtic's goals to put them 2-0 ahead in the match, before Dundee's consolation goal, which speaks to his importance to the win on the day.

    Celtic winger James Forrest.

It may now take another bold call from the Northern Irish tactician, who returned to Parkhead for a second spell at the club last summer, to win the league title ahead of Rangers this season.

After an underwhelming display in the middle of the park against Dundee, Rodgers must boldly drop captain Callum McGregor to the bench to give his side the best chance of landing the trophy.

    Callum McGregor's performance against Dundee

The Scotland international made his first league start after returning from an Achilles injury, which kept him out for three league matches, and failed to show that he deserves to keep his place in the XI.

McGregor played the opening 62 minutes of the game before being taken off and failed to make much of an impression with his lack of quality in and out of possession.

Glasgow World's Ben Banks handed the skipper a match rating of 5/10 – the lowest out of the starting group – and described some of his movements as 'laboured'.

He only completed 82% of his attempted passes – 13% lower than Matt O'Riley's 95% – and ended the match without a single chance created for his teammates, along with a 20% long pass accuracy.

    Callum McGregor

The Scottish whiz also lost possession 11 times from 55 touches of the ball, which shows that he gave the opposition a chance to get back on the ball at times.

McGregor recorded a Sofascore rating of 6.7 for his display against Dundee, which is significantly lower than his seasonal average of 7.32, which speaks to how below par he was in comparison to his usual self.

Callum McGregor's Premiership season in numbers

The experienced midfielder was recently named in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year, along with O'Riley, Cameron Carter-Vickers, and Liam Scales, for his impressive exploits in the top-flight this season.

Prior to his recent Achilles injury, the Scotland international had been in fantastic form in the Premiership with his sublime play in possession for the Hoops.

McGregor ranks third within the squad for accurate passes per game (64.3) and joint-fifth for key passes per match (1.5), which illustrates his control and creativity in the middle of the park.

He is typically a metronome in midfield for the Scottish giants, which is shown by him topping the chart for passes made per game within the midfield group, with his ability to find a teammate with his passes at an exceptional 92% success rate.

As you can see in the table above, the 30-year-old star was miles away from being at his best against Dundee, with significantly worse statistics than usual in possession of the ball.

If the Achilles injury has caused his performance levels to drop then Celtic cannot afford to be sentimental or hopeful that his performances will turn around when Rangers are breathing down their neck.

The Gers are only three points adrift in second place and travel across to Parkhead for an all-Glasgow clash on the 11th of May, after the Hoops play Hearts next weekend.

    Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor.

Therefore, Tomoki Iwata should be unleashed from the start ahead of the captain as his performances this season have been impressive at the base of the Bhoys midfield.

Why Tomoki Iwata should start for Celtic

The Japanese gem should start at the base of the midfield as McGregor's performances since his return from injury do not suggest that he is the man to look to, unless his form suddenly improves, to lead the team to the title.

That is not a huge criticism of the Scotland international, as the injury has clearly had an effect on his displays, but it is a bold call that the manager may have to make as his sluggishness – as evidenced by his dip in form – could cost them in the title run-in.

Iwata has taken his chance when it has come this season and showcased his ability to dictate games in the middle of the park for the Scottish giants.

    Tomoki Iwata

The upcoming clash with Rangers is a potential title decider, given how close the two teams are in the table, and the 27-year-old metronome was trusted to start the game at Ibrox.

He won five of his eight ground duels throughout the match, as the 27-year-old star stepped up to the mark from a physical perspective, whilst McGregor – making his comeback from injury – was brought on with Celtic winning 2-1 and the Hoops lost the 25 minutes he was on the pitch 2-1 to end the game 3-3.

It may, therefore, benefit the Bhoys to start Iwata when the Gers come to Parkhead in May, if McGregor continues to look rusty after his Achilles issue.

As you can see in the table above, the Japanese maestro has the quality on the ball to replace the captain in terms of his metronomic play in the middle of the park.

His 90% pass accuracy shows that he rarely gives possession away to opposition teams, which means that Rodgers' side can control the game by not making unforced turnovers to give sides a chance to get back into matches.

This makes him an ideal replacement for the skipper, who only completed 82% of his passes against Dundee whilst Iwata completed 95% (21/22) of his off the bench.

That is why the manager must boldly drop the Scotsman to start the 27-year-old as it could be crucial in Celtic's bid to win the title ahead of Rangers, particularly with the upcoming game between the two teams.

Tamim Iqbal hits record-breaking 158 as Bangladesh win a thriller

Zimbabwe fought back bravely, with Tiripano scoring a fifty, but in the end it wasn’t enough

      The Report by Liam Brickhill03-Mar-2020

Tamim Iqbal walks off after breaking his own record for highest ODI score for a Bangladesh batsman•BCB

Bangladesh survived a thrilling late rally from Zimbabwe’s lower order to secure a four-run win in an epic finish in Sylhet. After Tamim Iqbal’s record-breaking 158 had boosted Bangladesh to 322 for 8, Zimbabwe appeared out of the hunt when they slipped to 225 for 7 in the 42nd over. But Donald Tiripano and Tinotenda Mutombodzi launched a rousing counter-attack with an eighth wicket stand that brought 80 runs in just 7.3 overs. Tiripano struck five enormous sixes, including two in the final over, but he needed to hit another one off the final ball to secure the fairytale finish. It was not to be, Al-Amin Hossain holding his nerve at the last to seal the series for Bangladesh.Mutombodzi and Tiripano’s partnership was a new record for the eighth wicket in ODIs in Bangladesh, and was all the more remarkable given the situation in which it arose. When Sikandar Raza sliced Mashrafe Mortaza to third man to fall for 66, Zimbabwe’s last frontline batsman was back in the dugout and the required rate was well over 12 an over. Tiripano’s career strike-rate in ODIs before this knock was a shade over 56, and he is more known for his stodge than his flair. Mutombodzi’s career strike-rate was barely any better. It seemed that the match would fizzle out when the asking rate peaked above 15 with five overs to go, but Zimbabwe would not go quietly into the night this time and Tiripano sparked an incredible fightback. With Mutombodzi trailing in his wake, 16 runs flowed from the 46th over and 20 from the 47th, the fifty stand being raised in just 4.4 overs.Suddenly, Bangladesh were the team under pressure, but Shafiul Islam and Hossain then found their range with the yorker to set up a grandstand finish: 20 runs required from the last six balls. After a single and a wide, Zimbabwe once again appeared buried when Mutombodzi holed out to long-on. But Tiripano surged once more with back-to-back sixes, the second of which took him to a maiden ODI fifty. With Zimbabwe hunting six from the last two balls, Hossain was very fortunate to get away with a bouncer that cleared Tiripano’s head by some distance, leaving Zimbabwe needing a miracle from the last ball. In a breathless finish, Hossain held his nerve as Tiripano could only manage a toe-ended single down to long-off.Things could have been very different had Zimbabwe’s top order held things together, and that was the difference between the two sides: Zimbabwe scored 49 in the Powerplay, losing two wickets, but Bangladesh cruised to 65 in the same period and Tamim Iqbal batted all the way through to the 46th over to set up their innings.Iqbal spanked 20 fours and three sixes in his knock, which marked a career-best effort for him, and also a record high individual score for Bangladesh in this format. His approach this afternoon stood in contrast to the first ODI. On Sunday, he took his time to settle and struck just one boundary in the first ten. Today, he burst out of the blocks in vintage style, putting Zimbabwe’s seam attack to the sword with 10 rasping fours on either side of the wicket inside the Powerplay. His aggression meant that the early run-outs of Liton Das and Najmul Hossain Shanto barely put a dent in Bangladesh. Indeed, Iqbal’s calling was perhaps his only flaw, and there was more than one moment of indecision in his third wicket stand with Mushfiqur Rahim. But Zimbabwe were not able to capitalise on them and the partnership had reached 87 before Rahim holed out to long-on.Iqbal shifted through the gears throughout his knock: his first fifty came in just 42 deliveries, his second took 64 as Zimbabwe’s spinners wrested back a modicum of control in the middle of the innings, but then he went on the charge once again to motor from 100 to 150 in just 27 balls. Along the way, he became the first Bangladesh batsman to go past 7,000 runs in ODIs and with his third six he broke his own record for the highest score by a Bangladesh batsman in ODIs.To their credit Zimbabwe’s seamers struck a couple of blows of their own to ensure that Bangladesh couldn’t run completely rampant at the death, but on current form it seemed 322 was already well out of their reach. And when they wobbled early on, it seemed this match would follow the same script as the first ODI.Tinashe Kamunhukamwe managed to keep Zimbabwe in touching distance with his first ODI fifty, and an 81-run stand between Raza and Wesley Madhevere revived hopes once more. Both batsmen reached fifties of their own – Madhevere’s being his very first in internationals, coming in his second game – but when they fell in quick succession Zimbabwe once again appeared sunk.Tiripano and Mutombodzi had other ideas. While a fairytale finish was denied to them at the last, Zimbabwe can at least hold their heads high while Bangladesh will go into their third game with the comfort of an unassailable series lead.
