KL Rahul: 'Time to transform our white-ball cricket'

“I’d rather have a longer run as a successful captain and leader, than start off with something big and then go downwards”

KL Rahul believes his captaincy growth will be “slow and steady”•BCCI

The past week has been bittersweet for KL Rahul. He became the joint-highest paid player in IPL history when Lucknow Supergiants signed him for INR 17 crore, but also captained India to the wrong end of a 3-0 sweep, away in South Africa. His own contributions in series were scores of 12, 55 and 9.The defeat prompted Rahul to say that it was time for India to alter things in how they play white-ball cricket, while describing the team as a work in progress.”There were massive learnings,” Rahul told . “We are at a stage right now where we have World Cups as the focus. We are working towards certain things. We are working towards getting better as a team and learning.”I feel like we’ve played some really good cricket over the last four or five years, but it is also time for a little bit of… for us to get better and transform our white-ball cricket. And that’s been the chat. I don’t use that an excuse for not winning, but we are a work in progress as a team.”Related

In a sense, the South Africa tour was a first for Rahul on a number of fronts. He had never captained a team in List A cricket previously and outside of Punjab Kings in the IPL, he had captained in only a solitary first-class game across formats, when he led India A against England Lions in January 2019. At the end of the South Africa tour, he had led India in a Test match, and in three ODIs.”For me, it was my first time as leading. It was great, actually – there is so much you learn from losses and losses make you so much stronger than starting off with victories,” Rahul said.Rahul likened his captaincy journey to his Test career: “slow and steady.” He started off in the middle order on the Australia tour of 2014-15, but it wasn’t until 2016-17 that he nailed down a permanent spot. Then between 2018-2020, he hit another rough patch and found himself out, before concussion ruled Mayank Agarwal out of the first England Test earlier in the year. This opened the doors for Rahul’s return to the Test side at a time when he thought a comeback was unlikely. Until then, he had been pencilled in as a middle-order batting option. He ended the series with 315 runs in four Tests, second-most for India on tour, and hasn’t looked back since.”My career has always been that way: I have always got things slowly,” he said. “I have always had to start with a punch or a hit. It happened with me with my Test career. It happened with how my journey as a cricketer has gone – it has always been a slow and steady thing. So I am quite confident my captaincy also will be similar.”With Virat Kohli having resigned from Test captaincy, India are on the lookout for a new full-time captain. There is Rohit Sharma and, of course, Rahul, while some believe Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant could also be in contention. That tricky decision is for the selectors to make, but Rahul, now a veteran of 43 Tests, is quietly confident in his abilities.”I am quite confident in my leadership skills and I know that I can bring the best out of the players and I know I can do the job for the team, for the country, for my franchise,” he said. “I am not someone who judges myself based on the results. There are certain boxes that I need to tick as a leader and if I am doing all of those things and if my team is happy with how I am leading them, that’s the most important thing.”And that’s what matters to me. And I know eventually the results will follow as well and the success will stay there for longer. I’d rather have a longer run as a successful captain and leader than start off with something big and then go downwards. Fingers crossed. Hopefully, the best is yet to come.”

Chelsea interested in late move to sign "top-class" £34m Liverpool player

da dobrowin: Chelsea are thought to be interested in signing a £34m Liverpool player with weeks remaining of the transfer window.

Chelsea transfer news

da realsbet: The Blues have been one of the busiest sides in the summer transfer window, keeping up the trend of arrival after arrival under Todd Boehly. But it remains to be seen whether the American's scattergun technique bares its fruit following significant failure throughout his ownership so far.

With another new manager in the form of Enzo Maresca tasked with turning a sinking ship back towards success, those in London find themselves back at the start of their project for a third time.

Fabrizio Romano: Chelsea clearly tell club they want to sign £100m+ forward

The Blues are adamant they’ll move.

ByEmilio Galantini Aug 17, 2024

They're unlikely to be done with their summer spending just yet either. According to recent reports, deals that will see Joao Felix return to Stamford Bridge on a permanent basis and Conor Gallagher head in the opposite direction to Atletico Madrid are closing in on completion. It looked as though Gallagher would be forced to settle with staying put at Stamford Bridge, but Felix's emergence has seemingly put things back on course.

What's more, the Blues could then turn their attention towards a defensive reinforcement. According to Paul Joyce of The Times, Chelsea are now interested in signing Joe Gomez, who was left out of Liverpool's squad to face Ipswich Town on Saturday as he continues to assess his Anfield future. Reports elsewhere have claimed that Liverpool want up to £34m for Gomez's services.

A Champions League and Premier League winner, Gomez could be an impressive coup for those at Stamford Bridge, given that the deal would also weaken rivals Liverpool.

Of course, it remains to be seen whether the Reds would even allow the defender to complete such a move this month, but it's one that Chelsea should certainly explore.

"Top-class" Gomez's versatility could be key

Even without considering the substantial experience that he would bring to a young Chelsea side, it's worth noting that Gomez's versatility would likely prove to be his most important asset. The England international can play centre-back, right-back, left-back and even featured in central midfield for the first and only time as Liverpool scrambled for options last season. Suddenly, Chelsea would have three players in one to provide crucial depth.

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez

Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was full of praise for his defender last season, saying via Sky Sports: "People forget how important Joey was in the best years that we had. I do not know how many games he played in the year when we became champion and the year when we won the Champions League but it was a lot. Rightly so, because he is a top-class player."

Amid the chaos within Chelsea's backline, Gomez would bring assured calm, whether that's as a full-back or central defender in the forthcoming campaign, should he complete a summer switch to Stamford Bridge.

England head coach Chris Silverwood will miss the fourth Test in Sydney after being forced to isolate for 10 days due to a family member becoming the seventh Covid-19 case within the touring party.Covid cases started to emerge in the England camp on December 27, the second day of the Boxing Day Test, with play delayed by half an hour when the squad underwent rapid testing which cleared them to play. The seven cases are three support staff and four family members. No players have tested positive.Graham Thorpe, one of England’s assistant coaches, will take on Silverwood’s duties for the SCG Test which is due to start on January 5.The squad will undergo another round of PCR tests on Thursday. Both England and Australia are due to fly to Sydney via a charter flight on Friday morning. They will then stay in a hotel that has been booked exclusively for their use.Related

The MCG Test was able to continue after the initial positive cases in the touring group due to Victoria’s looser definition of close contacts which meant only negative results were needed. The New South Wales government has now also amended its close contact definition and has promised it will ensure the Test goes ahead even if more cases emerge in the squads. On Thursday, New South Wales recorded 12,226 Covid-19 cases having passed 11,000 the previous day. After Sydney, the series is set to conclude in Hobart with a day-night Test by which time Silverwood will have completed his isolation.Despite the outbreak in the England squad, Cricket Australia has remained confident that the series can continue.”We’ve seen through the last 18 months [we can get games on],” CA chief executive Nick Hockley said earlier this week. “I have to say I am so proud of the work of everybody involved, in particular thank the players but also the governments and health departments across the country. Pole position: Everton lead race to sign "outrageous" £150k-a-week player

da bet7k: Everton are in pole position to complete the loan signing of an "outrageous" player during the summer transfer window, according to a fresh report.

Everton transfer news

da wazamba: Sean Dyche continues to eye up new signings ahead of the upcoming Premier League season, with a number of important faces already brought in since the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

Jake O'Brien is Everton's most expensive addition of the summer to date, coming in from Lyon as a highly-rated young centre-back, and he could forge an exciting long-term defensive partnership with Jarrad Branthwaite once James Tarkowksi's best days are behind him. Iliman Ndiaye has also arrived from Marseille, in what is an exciting move, while Jesper Lindstrom has arrived on loan from Napoli for the season, amid other arrivals, too.

That's not to say that the Blues' summer transfer business is done there, however, and AC Milan winger Samuel Chukwueze has been linked with a move to Goodison Park, being considered an exciting attacking option who can provide service for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, assuming he stays put beyond the current window.

Everton are also thought to be battling to sign Colombia and Palmeiras midfielder Richard Rios, seeing him as an alternative to Kalvin Phillips, who looks set to once again leave Manchester City on loan this summer.

Everton lead race to sign "outrageous" player

According to Football Insider, Everton are leading the race to sign Phillips on loan from City ahead of the 2024/25 season, with the 28-year-old not having a future at the Etihad.

The Toffees are ahead of Aston Villa in the queue and are pushing hard to sign him "to replace Amadou Onana after his £50million move to Villa Park".

West Ham midfielder Kalvin Phillips

This is a very encouraging update from an Everton perspective, even though there may be some trepidation about Phillips, given the manner in which his career has dipped in recent years.

Granted, he has never convinced in a City shirt, with Pep Guardiola seemingly not rating him highly enough, but he has shown what he is capable of in the past, especially for England and Leeds United, being called "superb" by Xavi. At 28, the midfielder is still far from an ageing player, and if Dyche could manage to get the best out of him, the Blues could suddenly have a magnificent signing on their hands.

Former Everton hero John Stones certainly rates his £150,000-a-week club and international colleague highly, saying he has an "outrageous" range of passing, which is something not many would associate as his greatest asset.

Imagine him & DCL: Everton can land their own Nico Williams

He is available for transfer after 1 season at his current club

ByJoe Nuttall Aug 4, 2024

The fact that Phillips would be coming in on a free transfer takes away a lot of risk for the Merseysiders, allowing him to move on next summer if he fails to shine, but should he excel during his stint at Goodison Park, they could then look to snap him up on a permanent basis, getting several strong years out of him.

Last chance for South Africa to stay alive as they come up against formidable England

To put themselves in a comfortable position, they need a big win against red-hot England – so they have a better NRR than Australia

Firdose Moonda05-Nov-2021

South Africa have lost their last five T20Is against England•AFP/Getty Images

Big pictureThere are no quarterfinals at this T20 World Cup but South Africa have found themselves in one anyway – in a win-or-go-home match against England. If the latter happens, many will see it as a case of same-old-South-Africa when in fact, they’ve done better than expected so far.Though South Africa came into the T20 World Cup on the back of three successive series wins, two of those were against teams that needed to qualify for the Super 12 and the third was against West Indies. There was also an avalanche of administrative turmoil. Then, they lost their opening match to Australia and risked complete implosion after a Cricket South Africa board directive that instructed the team to take the knee ahead of their remaining games instead of continuing with their three-pronged approach of different gestures. Quinton de Kock initially refused to comply with the instruction and sat out South Africa’s second game but has since u-turned. Instead of derailing South Africa, the issue brought them closer. They’ve gone on to win their last three matches and though de Kock hasn’t contributed many runs, they are finding those elsewhere, albeit slowly. That will have to change against the big-hitters that are England. With a style of play that is uncompromisingly clinical, England have polished off three small targets quickly – their 56-run chase against West Indies inside nine overs is the best example – and defended well on the only occasion they were made to do that, against Sri Lanka. Even with their most successful seamer, Tymal Mills, ruled out of the tournament due to injury, they remain among the favourites to win and this match gives them an opportunity to sample a new bowling combination ahead of the real knockouts next week.England are all but guaranteed a place in the last four but will want to avoid facing Pakistan in the semi-finals by ensuring they finish on top of this group. That gives them a major incentive to push for victory, although losing by a close enough margin to ensure their net run rate doesn’t dip below the second-place finisher will also do.South Africa will also have an eye on net run rate, more so once they know the outcome of Australia’s match against West Indies. An Australian victory will put them on the same number of points as England, so not only will South Africa need to beat England, but they will have to have a better net run rate than Australia. If Australia lose, the equation is simpler for South Africa – just win – but that will not be straightforward. England are in red-hot form and have won their last five T20Is against South Africa.Form guideEngland WWWWW (last five completed matches, most recent first)
South AfricaWWWLWIn the spotlightChris Jordan is England’s leading T20I wicket-taker and a trusted lieutenant to Eoin Morgan, offering advice to the rest of the bowling attack throughout the innings. He was expensive in South Africa and India last winter but has conceded only 5.25 runs an over during this World Cup and his importance at the back end of an innings will be emphasised by the absence of the injured Mills, England’s other specialist death bowler.Chris Jordan is among the key bowlers for England•Getty Images

Anrich Nortje has been South Africa’s most successful bowler of the tournament so far, with eight wickets at 8.75, an average only bettered by four other bowlers, all of whom have fewer wickets than him. Nortje’s pace, aggression and accuracy has stood out and he now has the opportunity to make a big statement in South Africa’s biggest match.Team newsMark Wood, who is yet to feature due to an ankle problem, is the likely replacement for Mills if he gets through training on Friday, though Morgan stressed England would be “patient” with his return. David Willey, Tom Curran and Reece Topley are the alternatives if Wood is not risked.England: (possible) 1 Jason Roy, 2 Jos Buttler (wk), 3 Dawid Malan, 4 Jonny Bairstow, 5 Liam Livingstone, 6 Eoin Morgan (capt), 7 Moeen Ali, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Chris Jordan, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Mark WoodSouth Africa will consider the option of three specialist spinners but left-arm spinner Bjorn Fortuin has not played a match in the tournament so far. It’s more likely South Africa will be unchanged.South Africa: (possible) 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Reeza Hendricks, 3 Temba Bavuma (capt), 4 Aiden Markram, 5 Rassie van der Dussen, 6 David Miller, 7 Dwaine Pretorius, 8 Kagiso Rabada, 9 Keshav Maharaj, 10 Anrich Nortje, 11 Tabraiz ShamsiPitch and conditionsWhile Sharjah was talked up as being the most difficult batting venue ahead of the tournament, it has proved quite the opposite. Despite its low bounce, in the Super 12s, Sharjah has had the highest scoring rate per over of 7.63 and the most sixes hit. The smaller boundaries have meant that in six Super 12 matches, Sharjah averages 10.5 sixes per game while Dubai and Abu Dhabi are at 8.8 and 7.4 respectively. The match will take place on the same pitch as the New Zealand-Namibia game, and is expected to similarly slow. There’ll also be dew to contend with, as early as midway through the first innings, which will be a first for South Africa, who have had day games to date.Stats and triviaEngland have won their last five T20Is against South Africa.South Africa’s top five have the fourth lowest strike rate in the Super 12s – 107.52 – behind Scotland, Bangladesh and Namibia. England’s top five have the highest – 137.10.Quotes”I certainly don’t think it’s a wicket where you can take a lot of confidence away from batting quite a period of time on it – I don’t think many of the guys felt ‘in’ regardless of how they batted. But being in that fight for the game is going to be extremely important if the wicket stays the same.”
“It has been labeled as a quarterfinal for us. It’s a must-win game. I think that’s the main point. Irrespective of where Australia is within the group, we want to win that game, and we’ll be striving to do so. What’s happening with Australia, West Indies, I guess what helps us is that their game happens before our game, so we’ll kind of get a better sense or understanding as to how we need to approach the England game. If Australia win, then it’s going to come down to net run rate. We’ll have an opportunity, I guess, somewhere along our game to control our net run rate or alter our approach.”

– Eu joguei pouco aqui no Brasil, construí minha carreira lá fora praticamente.

Report: Everton pushing ahead in efforts to sign "amazing" £40k-a-week ace

da bet nacional: Everton are planning a new approach for an "amazing" Premier League player in the coming days, according to a new transfer update.

Everton transfer news

da aviator aposta: The Blues have been backed to sign plenty of players in the summer transfer window, having already completed some effective pieces of business. Iliman Ndiaye has come in from Marseille, while Aston Villa midfielder Tim Iroegbunam has also completed a move to Goodison Park.

In terms of other potential new signings, Leeds United winger Wilfried Gnonto has been mentioned as a strong target for Everton, with the Italian someone who could dovetail nicely with Jesper Lindstrom, who has joined on loan from Napoli until the end of the season.

Wilfried Gnonto

Lyon and Republic of Ireland centre-back Jake O'Brien is another target reportedly close to joining the Merseysiders. The 23-year-old is an impressive young defender who started 27 matches in Ligue 1 last term, scoring four goals and registering two assists for good measure.

Another target is believed to be Juventus striker Arkadiusz Milik, who has proven himself at the top level for a sustained period of time, scoring 17 goals in 73 caps for Poland. At 30, he isn't getting younger, but he has shown what a force he can be in front of goal and could give Sean Dyche the extra firepower that he craves.

Everton plan new approach for "amazing" ace

According to a new update from CaughtOffside, Everton are now planning a fresh approach for Chelsea striker Armando Broja this summer.

This report also states that the Albania international is "still waiting to see if AC Milan make a move in the final part of the transfer window", adding that "Brentford could also look to do business for him".

Broja arguably hasn't quite reached his potential as a footballer considering how highly rated he has been since a young age, with former Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino saying of him last season:

"The potential is amazing. We’re talking about one of the young strikers in England and in Europe with [the] most potential. But the problem now is he needs to push himself, and we’re going to try to help him to realise that never it is enough."

The Albanian has been around for some time, but it is easy to forget how young the £40,000-a-week Broja still is at 22, and there is no doubt that he is a hugely talented player with an eye for goal, having netted 16 times in 35 appearances for Chelsea's Under-18s during his teenage years, and also finding the net five times for his country to date.

Dyche already has an upgrade on £50k-p/w Everton star who could be sold

The Toffees are still looking to offload numerous first-team players.

ByEthan Lamb Jul 27, 2024

With Dominic Calvert-Lewin's Everton future up in the air amid interest from other clubs, the Chelsea attacker could be an intriguing replacement for the Englishman, coming in as a player who is still raw, but someone who is capable of finding further levels in the coming years.
