Ipswich struck gold on sensational star whose value has soared 650%

da fazobetai: Ipswich Town were given the impossible task of playing Liverpool and Manchester City in their first two games of the Premier League season this year, and while they held their own for a while, both contests unsurprisingly ended in defeat.

da pinnacle: However, their last three matches have all ended in draws, and while Kieran McKenna will want to start picking up wins, the early signs are encouraging, and so far, the business conducted in the summer appears to be paying off.

The Tractor Boys made a serious effort to upgrade following their promotion and now boast several players who are more than comfortable in the top flight.

However, there is one member of the team who’s been with the club for a while now and has seen his valuation explode.

Ipswich's best signings

Due to the number of players the club bought over the summer, arguments could probably be made for any of them to be the ‘best’, but in terms of impacting the team and, therefore, results, three stand out to us.

The first is, unsurprisingly, Sammie Szmodics, who joined from Championship side Blackburn Rovers for just £9m plus add-ons and while he’s only scored one goal so far, he was simply unreal last season.

In his 48 appearances for Rovers, the 28-year-old dynamo scored 33 goals and provided four assists, equating to a goal involvement once every 1.29 games, so if he can replicate just some of that form this season, McKenna should have a real threat on his hands.

Likewise, Jack Clarke, who joined from Sunderland for £15m plus add-ons last month, was sensational for Sunderland last season, racking up 15 goals and four assists in just 42 appearances while getting the fans off their seats at the same time.

The last standout transfer for us isn’t an outfield player. Instead, it’s Kosovan goalkeeper Arijanet Muric, who joined from Burnley for a fee of around £10m plus add-ons in July after being relegated with Burnley last season.

Now, some might raise their eyebrows at the idea of signing a keeper who was recently relegated, but Muric only started playing for the Clarets part way through last season, and as Ipswich fans will now attest to, he is a quality player.

For example, despite playing against City in his first game of the season and seriously struggling, the 25-year-old currently ranks sixth for post-shot expected goals minus goals allowed, which means that he has conceded fewer goals than he would have been expected to, thanks to his shot-stopping.

In all, the Tractor Boys conducted some brilliant business in the summer, although they have a player in the squad who’s been with them for quite some time and has seen his valuation balloon.

Leif Davis' valuation in 2024

Yes, the player in question is talented left-back Leif Davies, who joined Ipswich from Leeds United in July 2022 for a fee believed to be as low as £1m.

In the years since, it would be an understatement to say that the Newcastle-born ace has more than justified his minuscule fee, as he’s helped the club win promotion first to the Championship and then to the Premier League.

In his first season in East Anglia, the 24-year-old “animal,” as former manager Scott Parker dubbed him, scored three goals and provided 14 assists in just 46 games, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 2.70 games, primarily at left-back.

He did even better the following year, scoring two goals and providing 21 assists in just 44 appearances, equating to a goal involvement on average every 1.91 games and proving crucial in the club’s promotion.

Unsurprisingly, with two seasons as good as those, the Englishman has seen his valuation soar. According to Transfermarkt, he is now worth €9m, which converts to around £7.5m, or a whopping 650% increase on the fee the club paid two years ago.

Ultimately, Ipswich completed some brilliant business this year, but they have been doing so for longer than that, and the rise of Davis is a perfect example.

Worth as much as Alisson: Liverpool star’s value has risen 261% since exit

da marjack bet: Jurgen Klopp established something of a dynasty at Anfield, building Liverpool up against superior financial powers to enjoy a period of illustrious success that transcended expectations.

da bet vitoria: Quite simply, no one foresaw what was coming when the German arrived, picking up a unit that had fallen by the wayside under Brendan Rodgers and had – one brilliant Luis Suarez-fuelled season aside – toiled for several painful years.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp

He built his team with shrewd signings, welcoming promising players and convincing them that they were elite-level stars. He transformed the Merseyside outfit from wall to wall.

While many young talents went from strength to strength under Klopp’s wing, not everyone managed to enter the Anfield ascendancy, with Taiwo Awoniyi a shining example of a talented prospect to failed to make the grade but has still forged an impressive career for himself.

Why Liverpool sold Taiwo Awoniyi

Liverpool actually signed Awoniyi, who is now 27 years old, when he was in the maiden phase of his career, plucking him from the Imperial Soccer Academy in Nigeria in 2015 for a £400k fee.

The promising forward never made an appearance for the Reds but he did enjoy spells across a range of clubs – though never in England as he failed to earn a work permit. In a cruel irony, he was granted one in May 2021, months before he would leave the club forever.

Awoniyi’s nomadic journey came to an end when Union Berlin decided to buy him for around £6.5m in 2021. He’d scored five goals from 21 matches as a loanee at the German club the year before, but went from strength to strength as a permanent star, bagging 20 goals from 43 matches in all competitions in 2021/22 – thus earning the attention of Liverpool’s new Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest, who pounced.

Taiwo Awoniyi's rise at Forest

Awoniyi completed a club-record £17.5m transfer from Union Berlin to Nottingham Forest in August 2022, shortly after the club’s promotion from the Championship.

His exploits in Germany had convinced the Premier League new boys that he had what it took to keep them afloat in the top flight, and they were right, with Awoniyi finishing the campaign as Forest’s top scorer, netting ten times in the division despite only starting 17 matches. Clinical.

The £50k-per-week talent is a powerful player but one of energy and mobile athleticism too. He plays in an advanced forward role but drops deep and makes intelligent bursts to stretch lines and help enhance the fluency of his team.

Described as a “monster of an athlete” by journalist David Hundeyin, there’s no question that Awoniyi is one of the most effective hulking strikers in English football right now, with sinewy strength and an imposing focal presence that made a telling, and accurate, comment on his capacity to succeed in the Premier League when he first arrived in Nottingham.

Awoniyi also bears a technical quality and soundness that will have been nurtured during his time in the Liverpool academy. Albeit, he spent most of his time on Liverpool’s books out on loan across the continent and will have been directed toward building himself up for a possible role in Klopp’s senior squad.

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 12% of forwards across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for pass completion achieved per 90 (78.2%).

Let’s also not forget that it was the hulking forward’s goal that condemned Liverpool to a dismal defeat at the City Ground, notching the winner in the Premier League clash in 2022 and sending the full-throated Forest crowd into a frenzy. After the game, pundit Jamie Carragher condemned Liverpool’s “awful” display at a point near the nadir of Klopp’s sweeping reign.

It’s a measure of how well he has done to establish himself as a reliable marksman and earn a sense of closure on his failed attempt to break into the Reds’ senior squad – though it was the closure that Klopp and co would rather he failed to achieve.

The past couple of years might have been laden with injuries, but Forest fans got a taste of Awoniyi’s ability during their first term in the top flight under Steve Cooper. He also contributed effectively to the Tricky Trees’ defensive efforts.

Awoniyi's market value in 2024

This year, it’s not been the smoothest of starts, with his lack of action last year leaving him second in the pecking order to veteran goalscorer Chris Wood, who, in fairness, has been excellent of late, bagging three from five this season and scoring 15 goals from 24 matches in total under Nuno Espirito Santo.

He’s still valued at £23m though, as per Transfermarkt, which is a credit to his ability to turn on the potency when unleashed. Moreover, that figure stands as a 261% rise from the £6.5m fee that Liverpool collected for his sale and is also the current Transfermarkt value of Alisson Becker.

This is quite a thing. Alisson is only 31 years old (32 in less than a week) and has been Liverpool’s number one throughout the recent era of success, signing from AS Roma for £68m, a record deal for a shot-stopper, and is regarded as “the best goalkeeper in the world” by Klopp.

It’s simply a testament to Awoniyi’s rise and indeed the interest in his name. This summer, outfits such as West Ham United were found sniffing around for the Nigeria international’s signature.

Klopp praised the striker’s “sensational development”, and it’s not likely that there are any hard feelings even if Awoniyi did inflict misery on the Anfield side at one point after leaving.

The fact that he’s worth as much as Alisson even though his Premier League journey has been punctuated with injuries is a mark of his character and quality.

Maxwell to Kohli on run-out: 'I just can't bat with you. You run too fast'

ESPNcricinfo experts Ian Bishop and Daniel Vettori debate on the value of a quick single in T20s

Nagraj Gollapudi and Shiva Jayaraman05-May-20222:34

Ian Bishop and Daniel Vettori discuss whether quick singles have a place in T20s

The Royal Challengers Bangalore batting pair of Virat Kohli and Glenn Maxwell have been involved in two run-outs in IPL 2022. On both occasions, Kohli had called for a quick single, which proved fatal for him and his partner. Both run-outs have once again reopened the debate around the value of a quick single in T20 cricket. On Wednesday, in the ninth over of the match against Chennai Super Kings, Kohli tapped the ball in front of square on the offside and set off with his head down for a tight run. Maxwell, hesitant in his initial few steps, failed to make the crease and walked back disappointed having played just three balls in which he made three runs. On April 16, against Delhi Capitals, Kohli had similarly set off for a single, having dropped the ball to short point. Maxwell, having noted Lalit Yadav was closing in swiftly at point, refused his partner’s call, which forced Kohli to turn back, but he was beaten by a direct hit. While the probability of two batters being involved in more than one run-out is not unprecedented, Maxwell hinted to Kohli that he was not a big fan of taking quick singles. “I just can’t bat with you. You run too fast. You run too fast,” Maxwell told Kohli during the de-briefing session after the team’s 13-run win over Super Kings, a clip of which was put on Royal Challengers’ website on Thursday. “And you get ones and twos, and I don’t.”Related

Ian Bishop: 'Concerned that many types of bowlers are getting Virat Kohli out'

How Lomror and Patidar defied CSK's spin strangle

ESPNcricinfo experts Ian Bishop and Daniel Vettori called Kohli’s call for a single on Wednesday a “poor” decision. According to Bishop, there is place for singles in T20s, but he felt Kohli’s call was purely a “misjudgement”.”It looked doubtful,” Bishop said on ESPNcricinfo’s T20 Time Out, after Royal Challengers’ innings.”Kohli is very quick and he knows Maxwell is also generally quick between the wickets and it’s just a misjudgement. I have no problem with the quick single. Because when you have got, let’s say two powerful boundary-hitting teams, all things being equal on a good surface, they are going to go toe for toe against the best.Virat Kohli and Glenn Maxwell were involved in a run out•BCCI

“Sometimes, the things I have seen in the tournament, that has defined the winning margin is not necessarily the single – a single is part of it – but the number of balls scored off, not necessarily the boundaries. It’s the balls that you scored off in between boundaries. There’s a defining place of it but running is part of the judgement – you judge poorly, you get run out. But I think the single is still a defining part of these contests.”Vettori agreed partly with Bishop but said he has never been a fan of tight singles. “Just tap it to cover and run is not good judgement. We should assess each run-out on individual basis, on their merit because it’s just poor run,” Vettori said. “He [Kohli] was in a rush to get off strike because obviously, he wanted to keep turning over the singles and then Maxwell, who is as quick as anyone, just couldn’t get there in the end. So what it does is, it means we don’t get to see Maxwell bat, we don’t get to see Maxwell put pressure on their spinners. All that for the sake of a quick single can’t be worth it.”As per ESPNcricinfo’s logs, Kohli has been involved 40 times in run-outs in T20s, of which he has been out on 15 occasions.Importantly, Kohli and Maxwell pace their innings in different ways. That was probably the broader point Maxwell was trying to make when he said he doesn’t get his runs off ones and twos.Maxwell scores 62.04% of his runs through boundaries in T20 cricket as compared to Kohli’s 54.3%. Of the 74 batters who’ve scored 5000-plus T20 runs, Maxwell ranks 22nd in terms of runs scored through boundaries, while Kohli ranks 58th. Overall, though, both Kohli and Maxwell are among the safest runners between wickets in T20 cricket. While Kohli is involved in a run-out every 120 runs he runs, Maxwell’s involvement is once every 138 runs. Among 30 batters with 3000-plus all-run runs, Maxwell ranks fourth, and Kohli is seventh. These rankings are arrived at by dividing all runs scored by the number of times the batter has been involved in run-outs. So higher the ranking, the less risky they are in their running.Vettori, who has previously coached Royal Challengers, felt subcontinent batters often prefer dashing for a tight single.”You see a lot of, particularly subcontinent batsmen, who just drop and run and then they get turned away, rather than I suppose other batsmen who may expect the first call from the batsman striking.”When you are intuitive with each other and understand your ability to run between the wickets together, then that makes sense. But sometimes, when it comes to these franchise leagues, you may have to take a step back and understand that not everyone is on the same wavelength when it comes to running. And Maxwell and Kohli may be a poor example of that because they’ve played together for over a year now, they may have some understanding.”Summing up the run-out, Bishop called it a “poor run”. “You can’t get a run-out of a run that’s not there unless a guy misreads.”

Mohammad Abbas dices Somerset as Hampshire hit their straps in innings win

Abbas and James Fuller share seven wickets to set up emphatic result inside three days

ECB Reporters Network09-Apr-2022

Mohammad Abbas claimed six in the match•Getty Images

Mohammad Abbas claimed four wickets as LV= Insurance County Championship hopefuls Hampshire thumped Somerset by an innings and 113 runs inside three days. James Fuller had torn through the top order with a trio of quickfire wickets in a brutal morning spell, before Pakistan international Abbas dispatched the middle-order for figures of 4 for 22.Hampshire missed out on only a single batting bonus point to claim 23 points as they secured only their second innings victory over Somerset – who received a single point from the match after being bowled out for 180 and 135 – since 1957.Hampshire have only won two Championships in their history – in 1961 and 1973 – with the closest they’ve come to red-ball silverware since upping sticks to the Ageas Bowl a second-placed finish under the late Shane Warne’s captaincy in 2005.The famed commentator and journalist John Arlott wrote that the ’61 team was “deep in run-making power, soundly equipped at all points of attack and in which every man was worth his place – a true Championship side”. Those words look like they could equally be applied to their modern counterparts, at least on the early evidence of three perfect days.A menacing bowling attack, led by the highly experienced Test duo of Abbas and Kyle Abbott coupled with a batting line-up which feasibly has centuries down to No. 10, gives the county their best chance of a title in many a generation.”From the very first ball we dominated the game,” Hampshire’s captain, James Vince, said. “I’m not sure there is [an area to improve]. I left at lunch on day one and I believe we lost our lines and lengths for a bit but quickly rectified it to bowl them out for 180. You aren’t going to get every ball in the match right but I think we dominated every session.”It is an outstanding start and gives us an extra day off to prepare for the Oval. It is a great confidence booster. It is only early doors but if we can get close to replicating that performance then after the first chunk of the season, we’ll be sitting pretty.”Realistically they knew 10 wickets would likely be enough to taste victory on day three, but a solid opening hour between Ben Green and Tom Lammonby suggested a tough day’s graft was in order. The opening pair put on 50 in considered style, on a pitch proved placid by Hampshire’s 428, before Fuller entered the attack to take three wickets in 22 balls.Green was bowled through the gate, skipper Tom Abell was trapped in front trying to work to the leg side and Lammonby turned a short ball behind – having twice looked uncomfortable against bouncers.Abbott returned for his second spell of the day, only to be flayed for 12 runs in an over by Lewis Goldsworthy, before starting the next over with a James Hildreth boundary. The South African therefore celebrated with a predictable send-off when he pegged the first-innings half-century maker’s off stump back.Post-lunch, Hampshire ran rampant and with little restraint. Abbas was Somerset’s main punisher as Steven Davies edged to second slip to the first ball on resumption, Roelof van der Merwe was castled attempting to drive and Peter Siddle steered into the cordon.Keith Barker had Goldsworthy squared up and deflecting to first slip before the left-arm seamer turned catcher at short third man as Ned Leonard aimed an impatient slog at Liam Dawson’s spin.Abbas returned again to send Marchant de Lange’s off stump for a tumble and secure the victory at 2.40pm – the first side in the country to win in 2022.”It is very disappointing,” Abell said. “Coming here we were in a pretty optimistic mood, particularly with how pre-season had gone. We expect more from ourselves, particularly with the bat where we haven’t given a good account of ourselves. They are a world-class attack and we didn’t have the answers. The most disappointing thing is that we haven’t shown enough backbone or fight.”Somerset’s performance must be put in some context. Seven players were already made unavailable before travelling to Southampton, then George Bartlett succumbed to a shoulder injury the day before the game and Jack Brooks woke up with an illness.Their inexperience showed in the bowling of Ned Leonard and Kasey Aldridge, 19 and 21 respectively, with some quick, exciting stuff beset by an understandable lack of consistency. The batting also largely struggled against the trio of Abbas, Abbott and Barker. The good news is the majority of their absentees are set to return against Essex next week, including Craig Overton, Jack Leach and Jack Davey – who featured for the Second XI against Cornwall on Saturday.

Falta de atenção? Corinthians sofre o quarto 'gol-relâmpago' sob o comando de Vítor Pereira

-O primeiro gol do adversário hoje condicionou o jogo.

Fewer touches than Alisson: Slot must immediately drop Liverpool’s 6/10 ace

However, the Reds produced a magnificent display, putting right the wrongs of the weekend’s performance which saw the club fall to a shock 1-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League at Anfield.

Numerous players produced some much-improved performances, helping the club get off to the perfect start for the new European campaign in 2024/25.

However, despite the duo’s respective displays, one first-team member produced yet another dismal showing, with Slot needing to take action upon the club’s return to Premier League football this weekend.

The player who Slot needs to drop immediately

Diogo Jota was lucky to retain his starting spot after his showing against Forest last weekend, which saw him be replaced on the hour mark by fellow forward Darwin Núñez.

However, he started the victory last night, but once again failed to impress, being replaced after 68 minutes – once again by Uruguayan forward Nunez.

The Portuguese international registered two shots during the victory, but also managed to squander both of his efforts, which were both deemed as big chances.

He also only managed 23 touches, which was even fewer than teammate Alisson (27) achieved in the sticks – further showcasing his lack of impact. That makes for even more grim reading when considering that Alisson only actually had one save to make, with much of the play having been dominated by the visitors.

Equally, Jota also lost possession eight times, whilst also only managing to win 13% of the duels he entered – often coming out on the wrong side of the battles with the opposition defenders.

Jota was subsequently handed a 6/10 match rating by the Liverpool Echo journalist Paul Gorst, an indication as to how poor the forward was during the European outing.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot-1

There’s no denying the 27-year-old is a talent who has excellent qualities in the final third, but he’s desperately struggled to make any form of positive impact on Slot’s side.

Given his lack of form, Slot needs to take him out of the firing line, immediately replacing him for the league meeting against Bournemouth at Anfield this Saturday.

Heather Knight: England have 'parked' Ashes disappointment ahead of World Cup

Relaxation in Queenstown helps squad to overcome quarantine ahead of tournament

Heather Knight, England’s captain, believes her squad has successfully “parked” the disappointment of the recent Ashes loss, and is ready to embrace the ebbs and flows of the forthcoming World Cup in New Zealand, where they will be defending the title they won on home soil in 2017.The England players emerged from their mandatory quarantine period three days ahead of schedule, and are due to face Bangladesh and South Africa in a pair of warm-up matches in Lincoln next week, ahead of their rematch with Australia in their tournament opener in Hamilton on Saturday. And though England’s last ODI meetings with Australia did not go to plan, as they were routed 3-0 in the decisive leg of the multi-format Ashes series, Knight believes that a few days of golf and mountain-climbing in their picturesque base of Queenstown has helped to reinvigorate the players and set them up for a very different sort of challenge in the coming weeks.”When you have to do most things outdoors, the place you want to be is one of the most stunning, beautiful places in Queenstown,” Knight said. “A few of us managed to take on Ben Lomond, which was a lot of fun, climbing for the views of Queenstown.”There’s been a lot of golf, a lot of just going to cafes, and just enjoying what Queenstown has to offer. It’s been a chance to just switch off, do a few outdoorsy things away from cricket, gather our headspace, and try and refocus following the Ashes.”

The spectre of Covid continues to linger over the tournament, with the ICC taking the unusual step of sanctioning nine-a-side fixtures in the event of significant outbreaks, and have also permitted the use of female back-room staff as substitute fielders.”It’s created a few jokes among the female staff – we’ve got the doctor and the manager down to have a net tomorrow,” Knight added.”It’s probably unlikely it will be a Covid-free World Cup, but that is the hope. With the rules around close contacts, there’s a scenario where it might happen, so people are desperate to get the tournament on if something goes badly wrong with Covid. It’s not an ideal situation and hopefully it never happens.”More immediately, England’s most pressing concern is to firm up their opening partnership, given Lauren Winfield-Hill’s struggles to make the most of her renewed opportunities, five years on from her role in the 2017 World Cup win. For the final ODI in Australia, England’s nailed-on opener, Tammy Beaumont, was partnered by Emma Lamb, but Lamb’s second-ball duck on debut has left the team management no clearer about the right course to take.”It’s pretty obvious we haven’t quite nailed that spot yet,” Knight said. “It’s never ideal, not being totally sure on your batting line-up leading into a World Cup, but that’s the position we’ve been in. The warm-up games will be a chance, for whoever we decide to go with, to try and cement their spot and really get some form going into the tournament.”Related

Although England enter the tournament as defending champions, it is Australia who will be runaway favourites for the title this time around, following their dominant displays in recent years. They have lost just twice in 33 completed ODIs since that last event, including a world-record run of 26 consecutive wins, from the start of 2018 through to India’s two-wicket win in Mackay last September.Knight, however, believes that England’s dramatic run to the title in 2017 will still hold them in good stead, not least because they had to overcome adversity at several key moments of that campaign – including an opening-match loss to India in Derby, and two agonisingly close finishes against Australia and South Africa, prior to their nerve-shredding fightback in the final, against India at Lord’s.”Australia are going to go in as favourites, but [2017] should give us a lot of experience of what it takes to be successful in these events,” Knight said. “Sometimes it’s just about getting over the line, and I think that’s what we did so well in 2017. We just were able to win those games that were really tight. We were able to keep our composure in the big moments, and deal with all the off-field stuff that comes with the World Cup.”It was one of the best five-six weeks of my life, for sure,” she added. “It was an amazing competition and we remember how imperfect it was as well. Because we won the competition, you look back and think it was all plain sailing, and it completely wasn’t.”It’s a nice reminder to look back, because we’re going to have to ride the highs and the lows, and that’s almost the brilliance of being in a World Cup. The different countries you have to face, the travel, the ebbs and flows of the tournament, and trying to peek towards the back end of the group stages. I’m so excited to get going again.”
