Cummins on collapse: Australia batters 'overplayed' and 'went away from their methods'

Chappell on the sweep shots: Australia panicked and did something not natural

Australia captain Pat Cummins has admitted his batting group overplayed their hand in the second innings in Delhi as they took their proactive mindset to the extreme in an extraordinary batting collapse that cost them the second Test in less than a session.Australia were 65 for 1 in the first over of the third day with a lead of 66 before losing 9 for 48 in 110 balls to be bowled out for just 113 well before lunch on the third day.Related

India cruised to victory with just four wickets down to take a 2-0 series lead in the series. The stunning collapse comes just a week after they were bowled out for 91 in the third innings in Nagpur to lose that match by an innings and 132 runs.Cummins had asked his batters to be brave and proactive in the immediate aftermath of the Nagpur defeat but admitted his team may have gone too far the other way in Delhi, with six of the dismissals coming via attempted sweeps or reverse-sweeps in a frantic 90-minute period against Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin who claimed all 10 wickets between them for the innings.”Nagpur maybe [we] underplayed it, we probably overplayed it here at times in the second innings,” Cummins said. “You’ve got to find a way to try and put pressure back on the bowlers. They’re really, really good bowlers, especially in these conditions. Probably just at times maybe just overplayed it.”I thought they bowled really well. It’s not easy out there. But perhaps some guys went away from their methods.”Each batter has their own way to go about it. I don’t think there’s any one size fits all rule. Unfortunately, quite a few of us got out with kind of cross-batted shots which might not be our preferred method.”Cheteshwar Pujara, who guided India home in his 100th Test match, noted on that he had put the sweep shot away on the Delhi surface having fallen trying to sweep in Nagpur.”If you look at this pitch, it’s not an ideal shot to play because there’s no bounce,” Pujara said.Steven Smith was out lbw after missing a sweep•Getty Images

“I think it’s the initial phase when you are just walking into bat, you find it a little difficult, you need to get used to the pace of the pitch, some balls spun, some balls are going straight on. So you just need to figure out the way to tackle that. But once you play about 30-40 balls, then it’s a good pitch to bat on. And then once the ball gets older, I think we have seen that throughout the game when the ball is hard it’s slightly difficult. Once the ball gets softer, it gets easier to bat on.”Cummins admitted his team had let a golden opportunity slip to get back into the series having had India 139 for 7 on day two, leading by 124 in the first innings thanks to Nathan Lyon’s superb five-wicket haul, only to lose before tea the following day in an extraordinary turn of events.”I’d say just more disappointment, knowing that over here these opportunities don’t come up all the time,” Cummins said. “Especially being relatively in front of the game, feeling like that game was there for the taking.”Will Cameron Green, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood be fit for Indore?Australia chose to train in the immediate aftermath of the Nagpur loss last week holding an optional centre-wicket practice on what would have been day five at the VCA Stadium. They are unlikely to follow suit in Delhi. But they have nine days to fill between the loss and the start of the third Test in Indore.Cummins revealed there will be a lot of soul-searching for Australia’s batters in particular. But there may also be some changes made to the squad.”We’ve got a bit of time. We’ll have a good think. Have a look at different things,” Cummins said. “I think over the next day or two we’ll look at any changes in the squad as well. Mitchell Swepson has gone home, he’s a chance of coming back. Hopefully Cam Green is available, [Josh] Hazlewood, [Mitchell] Starc, we’ll manage that.”We’ll assess it over the next couple of days. [We’ve] probably got enough time to have a bit of a break, a bit of a refresh, and still plenty of time to roll up the sleeves before the next one.”Green, Starc and Hazlewood are all expected to be fully fit for Indore while Swepson should be available to return to India after flying home for the birth of his first child. But there are still some concerns over David Warner after he was subbed out of the game with a concussion following a blow to the head in the first innings. He has also suffered a hairline fracture in his left elbow from another blow in the same innings.”Davey is still a bit sore and sorry,” Cummins said. “So we’ll manage and see how he goes over the next few days. He came to the ground today for a fair while which is good. But we’ll kind of assess him over the next little bit.”Todd Murphy bowled with some side soreness in the fourth innings but managed to deliver 6.4 overs and collect the wicket of Virat Kohli.

Moreeng believes van Niekerk 'will be ready' for T20 World Cup

Having recovered from a long-term ankle injury, she has met all of CSA’s fitness requirements except the 2km time trial

Dane van Niekerk remains in contention for South Africa’s T20 World Cup squad and will undergo a final fitness test on January 27 in a bid to prove her eligibility for selection.Since recovering from the broken ankle she sustained last January, which kept her out of the 50-over World Cup and the Commonwealth Games, van Niekerk has played at the Hundred and the WBBL, but has not played international cricket as she works to meet the fitness standard set by Cricket South Africa (CSA). She has been left out of the squad for the tri-series against India and West Indies, which starts on Thursday, but coach Hilton Moreeng is optimistic she will lead the team at the World Cup next month.Related

Lee: 'You're dropping me because of the way I look'

Dane van Niekerk left out of SA tri-series squad

“We believe she’ll be ready,” Moreeng said. “That’s why she has been given all the opportunity to make sure she is ready, so she can get through the fitness test and make sure she is part of the group. She was part of the camp and she trained with us. She is working hard to make sure she is in that squad.”ESPNcricinfo understands that van Niekerk’s fitness has improved drastically from where it was even before the injury, with one insider saying she is “the fittest she has been in five years.” She has lost 10kg since last year’s Hundred and has met all her markers except the 2km time trial. Female cricketers in South Africa are required to complete the run in 9 minutes and 30 seconds, while male cricketers must complete the distance in 8 minutes and 30 seconds. All players who hope to play for the national side must now meet this criteria, as well as pass a body composition test, although this is a rule that was only implemented in the last few years as CSA sought to be stricter on fitness.Last year, van Niekerk’s team-mate Lizelle Lee was dropped from the national team for failing her body composition test after her weight was deemed over the standard set for her. Lee retired in the aftermath and explained how she felt victimised and body-shamed at the time, as well as questioned why the standard was not more individualised.Sisanda Magala, the men’s white-ball bowler, asked the same question when he was left out of the national squad for failing to make his running times. He told The Cricket Monthly that he hoped his performances, as the leading bowler in the domestic one-day competition made up for the 12 seconds he fell short by on the running trial, but they did not. He has since passed the test and was, on Tuesday, named in South Africa’s ODI squad to play England later this month.Van Niekerk has lost 10kg since last year’s Hundred and has met all her markers except the 2km time trial•ICC via Getty

Considering Lee and Magala’s cases, Moreeng was asked if the rigid application of the standards was fair, and said he believed their uniformity made them so. “We believe they are fair. Every member of the squad knows what is required, even at the domestic level. It’s where we are as a team and as a country, it’s the direction we are moving to. It’s to make sure each and every player, as far as the minimum standards are concerned, meets them,” he said. “It’s criteria that have been designed and given to players all around the country. It’s one of those that tests your strength and aerobic side of things to make sure players will be able to deal with whatever demands the game gives them on a daily basis. It’s all to make sure the player has the best possible time to perform.”But Moreeng conceded that even without passing the running test, van Niekerk remained crucial to South Africa’s chances of success. “She is a quality cricketer,” he said. “Any environment will be blessed to have her.”And those close to van Niekerk say she is fully committed to doing everything she can to ensure she passes the test and is in South Africa’s squad and sees playing at this World Cup as the fulfillment of a dream.South Africa have set themselves a goal of qualifying for the final of their home World Cup, after reaching the semi-finals in 2014 and 2020.

Worth less than Dike: West Brom hit gold selling star who had "great value"

da dobrowin: Despite picking up a gigantic 11 draws from 21 Championship contests so far this season, Carlos Corberan’s West Bromwich Albion are still very much in the conversation for promotion.

da bwin: The Baggies’ 2-1 loss to Watford last weekend was amazingly their first defeat in 13 games, as Tom Cleverley’s Hornets just about got the better of the stern away side through a Vakoun Bayo brace.

Corberan will want his troops to immediately bounce back when Bristol City travel to the Hawthorns this coming Sunday, but will know this clash will be yet another contest that Daryl Dike won’t be deemed fit for as his nightmare in the West Midlands goes on.

Dike's continued injury issues

Dike hasn’t donned a Baggies strip since going down with an unfortunate Achilles tendon injury versus Ipswich Town back in February, with the American well-known to those in the treatment room at this point.

Staggeringly, the ex-Barnsley man has been absent for a colossal 117 games due to recurring injury troubles since making a bumper £7m move a reality.

Thankfully, Corberan has been able to rely on the likes of Josh Maja and Karlan Grant to fire in the goals this season whilst Dike remains sidelined, with Maja boasting ten goals on his own in the Championship whilst Grant has an ever-growing five next to his name.

The Spaniard will be glad that this duo in question have found their shooting boots, having had to wave goodbye to Brandon Thomas-Asante this summer after he switched allegiances to Coventry City.

But, that sale doesn’t hurt as much now when you consider Thomas-Asante’s ongoing struggles with the Sky Blues.

Thomas-Asante's time at West Brom

The ex-Salford City attacker was a top performer for West Brom on his day, with the 25-year-old wearing the tag of being the club’s top scorer last season in the second tier when powering home 11 strikes.

In total, Thomas-Asante would score 21 times for Corberan’s men across 78 games, which would pique the interest of fellow Championship side Coventry this summer on their hunt for some fresh blood up top.

In the end, Thomas-Asante would live up to then West Brom manager Steve Bruce’s glowing words after his arrival at the club in 2022, who stated that the striker would be of “great value” as a “young” and “hungry” option to call upon.

But, although Bruce was ultimately justified in dishing out these compliments, the Ghanaian has since gone on to look goal-shy in his new surroundings, whilst Corberan and Co simply just get on with business with Maja and Grant to call upon.

Worryingly for the 25-year-old, he has only been able to find the back of the net once from 20 clashes in the league this season, with that solitary strike coming all the way back in October versus Blackburn Rovers.

To pile on the misery even more, Thomas-Asante – as per Transfermarkt – has a lesser transfer value than the aforementioned Dike, with the ex-West Brom man only worth £2.4m when contrasted next to his injury-prone counterpart’s slightly higher £2.6m price tag.

Dike will pray that he can make a miraculous recovery from injury soon to become a key part of Corberan’s side again, but Thomas-Asante – on the contrary – will worry that his game-time at Coventry will only lessen now with Frank Lampard in charge.

Whilst it could’ve been a sale that damaged the Baggies severely, the promotion chasers show no visible scars from the departure now, as another playoff finish continues to be eyed up.

Solomon upgrade: Leeds exploring deal to sign "complete" star

da winzada777: Leeds United have dropped down to second in the Championship table after Sheffield United picked up a point in their clash with West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.

da blaze casino: The Whites are now one point behind the Blades and have a superior goal difference to Chris Wilder’s side, which means that they are in a good position to retake the number one spot in the division in the coming weeks.

Burnley’s draw with Middlesbrough on Friday night provided the West Yorkshire outfit with an opportunity to move back into the automatic promotion places, which they took with a 2-0 win over Derby County at Elland Road on Saturday.

Joe Rodon and Max Wober both scored in the first half of the match to secure all three points for the hosts, in a difficult game against a team that came with a clear game plan to frustrate Leeds.

Daniel Farke’s side will be hoping to continue to pick up results like that, even when teams come to frustrate them, so that they can avoid the lottery of the play-offs this time around.

The German head coach could look to dip into the market in the January transfer window to bolster his squad ahead of their push for promotion in the second half of the season, subsequently signing an upgrade on Manor Solomon…

Manor Solomon's performances for Leeds this season

Farke swooped to sign the Israel international on a season-long loan from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window, and the attacker has had a mixed start to life in West Yorkshire.

The former Fulham star was selected to start on the left wing against Derby on Saturday and ended the match with zero shots on target and zero ‘big chances’ created for the Whites.

He has only scored two goals for Leeds and both of those strikes were close range finishes in the dramatic 4-3 win over Swansea at the end of last month.

The 25-year-old forward has, so far, failed to offer a regular threat as either a scorer or a creator of goals for Leeds on the left flank this season.

Since his assist for Mateo Joseph on his debut against Hull, Solomon has registered two goals and zero assists in 11 Championship appearances for the club.

As you can see in the table above, the Spurs loanee has created as many goals for the opposition, with his error that led to a goal against Burnley, as he has for Leeds in the second tier.

Simply, Solomon has not provided regular quality at the top end of the pitch, failing to record a goal or an assist in ten of his 12 league outings, and that is why they could look towards the transfer window to sign a replacement.

Leeds United eyeing MLS starlet

According to the Mirror’s Ryan Taylor, Real Salt Lake forward Diego Luna has emerged as a target for Leeds United ahead of the upcoming transfer window, which officially opens for business next month.

The reporter claims that Farke and his recruitment team are exploring a potential swoop for the American youngster, although he adds that there is ‘nothing to suggest’ that a deal is imminent for the Championship side.

Taylor also reveals that there is competition from other clubs across Europe and this means that the Whites could have to move quickly to secure his services, to avoid another team coming in to beat them to the left winger’s signature.

The article from the Mirror claims that Leeds have been keeping tabs on his development and tracking his performances in the MLS for many months, which shows that this interest has been bubbling away in the background for a long time.

Luna, who won the MLS Young Player of the Year award for 2024, has a contract through to December 2026 and the report states that Real Salt Lake will demand a fee of more than £3m for his services.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

It remains to be seen whether or not Leeds will be able to seal a deal for the impressive young forward in the January transfer window.

Why Leeds should sign Diego Luna

Firstly, the MLS Young Player of the Year is only 21 and this means that he could come in as a talented prospect with the potential to improve and develop over the years to come.

Luna could, therefore, come in to make an instant impact whilst also having the scope to grow in value under Farke’s coaching, whilst also potentially having the ability to develop into a Premier League level player.

The USA international, who was hailed as a “complete” attacker by writer Jon Arnold, also caught the eye with his contributions as both a scorer and a creator of goals in the MLS throughout 2024, which shows that he can already make an impact at first-team level.

Luna, who scored 13 goals in 43 USL Championship games for El Paso, ended the year with nine goals and eight assists in 36 appearances in all competitions for the American side.

As you can see in the table above, the right-footed left winger, who can also play as an attacking midfielder, provided a regular threat as a scorer and a creator.

His return of eight assists from 12 ‘big chances’ suggests that his teammates let him down at times with their wasteful finishing, whilst eight goals from 6.67 xG speaks to his effectiveness in front of goal.

He averaged a goal or a ‘big chance’ created every 1.65 matches in the MLS, whilst Solomon is currently averaging a goal or a ‘big chance’ created every three appearances in the Championship for Leeds.

Leeds United have been linked with an interest in the impressive centre-forward.

ByDan Emery Dec 6, 2024

Therefore, Luna – who is four years younger than the Spurs loanee – has the potential to come in and be a big upgrade on Solomon by providing more quality as both a goalscorer and a creator from a left wing position in the second half of the season, whuch is why Leeds should sign him.

'We enjoy confrontation as a group' – Elgar's South Africa brace for 'feisty' tour of Australia

The ‘bold and brash’ players in the opposition camp will ‘bring out the best’ in his side, South Africa captain says

Firdose Moonda01-Dec-2022

“Bring it,” is South Africa’s message to Australia as they head Down Under in search of a fourth, successive away series win against the opponents. It’s been more than four years since they last played each other, in the series that became known for the sandpaper-gate scandal but also ranks as one of South Africa’s biggest successes in the last decade. It was the first time they claimed a series win against Australia at home since readmission. The residue from that series litters the entrance hall to this one and there’s every expectation that the action will take place as much off the field as on it.Related

South Africa quicks' lack of game-time remains a concern

“Because we are playing in their home conditions, it’s going to be pretty feisty,” Dean Elgar, South Africa’s Test captain, said ahead of their departure on Thursday. “The individuals they have within their squad are pretty brash and bold – in your face kind of characters and that can work in our favour. I think that plays into our hands. We enjoy that confrontation as a group and we manage it pretty well. We’ve got calm heads around that. If they want to be in your face, it’s fine. I definitely don’t shy away from that and I will be encouraging the players not to shy away from that, because I think that’s when South Africans bring out their best.”Elgar’s team, however, is not in the same state as Faf du Plessis’ was in 2018. Although they presently sit second on the World Test Championship (WTC) table, they are closer to the 2019 outfit that toured India with an interim team director at the helm, who was being sent on his first international assignment to one of the most difficult places to play Tests, and an impending administrative crisis looming. This 2022 side also has a temporary coach, who will make his debut. He too is taking South Africa to a tough place and there’s no indication of when permanent appointments will be made. But there is one difference. Elgar revealed that he requested Malibongwe Maketa to take over from Mark Boucher and that he and Enoch Nkwe (the team director from 2019 who is now director of cricket) are on the same page.”Mali is one of the coaches I asked our director (Nkwe) to try and get in to be interim. I’m glad I got that one right,” Elgar said. “It’s nice to have a DOC that has got cricket at heart and is backing his leadership that needs to be backed. Mali understands his role, which is going to be a supportive role, and he understands me as a cricketer, as a person and as a leader. Mali comes with quite a lot of experience. He has been around the block as long as I can remember.”Maketa worked as head coach for the Warriors franchise in South Africa’s domestic circuit from 2015 to 2017, as Ottis Gibson’s assistant for the national side between 2017 and 2019, and most recently as the South African A coach. He was also on the tour in England earlier this year and has worked with most of the squad members in some capacity over the last decade. He is one of the few consistent presences on the South African scene, which Elgar thinks they need more than anything as the Test team evolves.”The environment has changed drastically (since 2019) but in a good way. We’ve tried to keep our core players so the consistency has always been pretty stable. We have evolved immensely and really played good cricket in the Test arena but we are still trying to push for the consistency factor which is going to be key going into a big series,” he said.Arguably, this is the biggest test for South Africa for at least the next three years. It’s their last three-Test series until they host Australia in 2026, a must-win if they are to reach the WTC final and their first in Australia over the festive period since 2008. That means no-one in the current squad has played a Test at the MCG or the SCG or soaked in the atmosphere of such an occasion.”Growing up as a kid, you’d always wake up for these Boxing Day Test matches Down Under and you don’t mind losing a few hours’ sleep,” Elgar said. “Now we’ve got 16 players who are going to experience it first-hand. It’s a childhood dream of mine to experience this. Playing a Boxing Day and a New Year’s Test in Australia – I don’t think you get bigger than that.”

86% duels lost: Rodgers must drop Celtic player who was worse than Hatate

da marjack bet: Celtic moved to three points clear of the Scottish Premiership table on Saturday after they secured an emphatic 4-1 victory over Hearts away from Parkhead.

da gbg bet: The Hoops took advantage of Aberdeen’s 2-1 defeat to St Mirren to go clear at the top after being level on points with the Dons for the entire season so far, but sitting above them on goal difference.

Brendan Rodgers’ side now have a gap between them and second and will be hoping to extend that in the coming weeks to provide them with a healthy cushion to potentially rotate the squad and rest players for other competitions.

The Scottish giants struggled at times in the first half against Hearts, however, as the home side pushed to score the opening goal and tested Kasper Schmeichel with a few early efforts.

Celtic’s Danish colossus was equal to everything, though, and that allowed the Hoops to push on in the second half and secure all three points, thanks to goals from Kyogo Furuhashi, Nicolas Kuhn, and Adam Idah (x2).

It was a very impressive second half display and one that included a number of superb performances across the park from several players.

Celtic's top performers against Hearts

The man who opened the scoring, Kyogo, was a constant threat at the top end of the pitch with his movement in behind to create chances for himself.

He scored the first goal, rifling in after the ball dropped kindly to him, and had four shots on target in total, also missing two ‘big chances’, which shows that he was constantly testing Craig Gordon.

Cameron Carter-Vickers returned to the team at centre-back and produced a dominant display for the Hoops, as he won seven of his eight duels and made six clearances.

Kuhn, of course, was another player who excelled. As well as his thumping strike into the top corner, the German winger created one ‘big chance’ and completed all three of his attempted dribbles on the right flank, in another terrific showing in the Premiership.

As you can see in the table above, several other players also starred in various statistics, with Callum McGregor’s creativity and Auston Trusty’s defensive intelligence on show.

However, there were also some players for Celtic who struggled at times and did not showcase the best of their abilities in the win over Hearts on Saturday.

One Hoops whiz who did not give the best account of himself was central midfielder Reo Hatate, who started alongside the captain and Arne Engels.

Reo Hatate's performance against Hearts

The Japan international played the full 90 minutes of the 4-1 win and was unable to get in on the act with a goal or an assist to show for his efforts in the match.

He was involved, in part, in the third goal from Idah. It was his failed attempt to dribbled past a defender that, fortunately, allowed Paulo Bernardo to slip the Ireland international through on goal on the edge of the box.

The 27-year-old did, however, create one ‘big chance’ in that match and was not rewarded with an assist, which suggests that he was unfortunate not to record a goal involvement.

His work out of possession left a lot to be desired, though, as the central midfielder lost five of his six ground duels and both of his aerial contests, which shows that the Hearts players found it far too easy to get the better of him in physical battles.

As you can see in the table above, creating high-quality opportunities for his teammates and not being rewarded with assists has become a theme for the midfielder, who has lost the majority of his duels in the division.

Hatate, despite being dominated by the Hearts players in his individual battles, was not the worst performer on the pitch for the Hoops, though, as Arne Engles was even worse in the middle of the park.

Why Rodgers must drop Arne Engels

The summer signing from Augsburg, who played twice for Belgium during the international break, has struggled for form in recent matches for the Hoops.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Rodgers must, now, finally bin the Belgian youngster from the starting XI to take him away from the spotlight and allow him to rest and come back with the motivation to win his place in the team back.

The 21-year-old lightweight started the 2-0 win over Kilmarnock before the break and struggled in that game, with one duel won and zero chances created in 63 minutes on the pitch.

Engels needed to bounce back with an improved display against Hearts from the start and was unable to do so, as the former Bundesliga starlet failed to impress for the second match running.

Meanwhile, Paulo Bernardo came off the bench and won 100% (2/2) of his duels, created a ‘big chance’, and provided an assist against the Jam Tarts.

As you can see in the table above, Engels offered very little to the team in and out of possession throughout the game, with zero chances created and zero tackles and interceptions.

He was also a lightweight in midfield, losing 86% of his duels, and these statistics show that it is time for Rodgers to drop him down to the bench for the clash with Club Brugge on Wednesday night, as he was easily beaten by defenders in battles and did little to help the team in the final third.

Hatate was, at least, able to create a ‘big chance’ for the team and was partially involved in Idah’s goal, and that is why Engels should be dropped ahead of the Japanese gem, with Bernardo given a chance to impress from the start after his strong cameo.
